  • DaVinci Resolve 17 is out and it has new HDR Controls that we'll be breaking down how they work, and how to use them for your own projects.

    Notes:
    There's lot about HDR to cover. The goal of this video was to teach how these controls work so you can use them on your own projects. While they are HDR controls, they can be used on non HDR projects and provide tremendous tonal control. Being able to easily manipulate the saturation of a tonal range while adjusting the exposure is incredible, you can achieve a similar result in the VS curves, but it just makes it so simple and flexible.
    I will note that I had two crashes while screen recording this. I decided to show one of them for transparency. I'm not entirely sure what caused the crash, but stability issues are to be expected when it's still in beta. You can always roll back to an older version, though when upgrading just like I say in the video always back up your database.

      DaVinci wide colour space, working directly on log without touching colour wheels and exporting in 709 or whatever you want.

    Good Morning Nathan,
    I wanted to ask you if you think the mini panel works well with 17 HDR wheels? And another question is if you are correcting/grading for HDR output would you start correcting in HRD wheels after setting your ranges or start with your primary L G G first then go into HDR wheels.
    Thanks for your help.

  • @kimkrohnberle
    @kimkrohnberle 3 роки тому

    Thank you for the tut. Besides the finer controls in the wheels window, is there an argument to use HDR setup and a wide gamut color space when delivering to rec709?

    All the new features, I believe colorists will appreciate this tool the most. Your explanation on the functionality of it seems to spot on, Nathan. Which is refreshing with such a new update. I just hope that people don't lose the fundamentals of using these tools as they would be designed for. Seems to me that this is more of a fine tuning tool where after the basics are all done, that secondaries would be where this tool would be used. Same with the Color Warp tool. You can go nuts using these tools, but getting a great base in the start is fundamentally a better workflow, especially when you have 1000 clips to do and very little time. Excellent video, this quick out of the gate though. I appreciate the time you are saving me .

      No problem Jim. For me I find these exercises helpful too. Helps me get a better understanding of how it works and where I can use it. For the warper, I'm still working out valid tests. I was thinking about an EBU color bar with a vectorscope to see how the hue of neighboring colors is impacted. Would like to hear your thoughts on what else I should try.

    Very informative breakdown. Thanks. Would you consider doing a video on a HDR workflow starting from a setup, through a grading to delivery process? That would be cool. Also, splitting it to the HDR-monitored and the SDR-monitored workflow would be awesome. Thanks.

    How can I export a Resolve 17 project that uses "DaVinci YRGB Color Managed" as Color science and "DaVinci Wide Gamut" as Resolve color management preset, to make it an HDR UA-cam video using AVC/H.264 or HEVC/H265?

  • @danielrheaume904

    Hi Nathan! Thanks for the great video! I am a bit confused on how the HDR wheels are different than just using the curve with bezier anchor points. Any insight on this?

    • @NathanCarterVids
      @NathanCarterVids  3 роки тому +1

      More granularity and overlap as well as tonal saturation control. You could theoretically achieve similar results on curves in most cases, but it's great to have as another option. I find myself using it a bunch to keep clouds under control and get bright areas looking just right by adjust the contrast of specific areas

      Ahh that's a window sizing issue I believe. When the monitor is too small, resolve does some automatic rearrangements to make everything fit.

      @@NathanCarterVids Thanks, that was my question also. Really well explained, just now I'm wondering at what point in a workflow you're going to be using them.
      Will you be using the log-wheels less now these are in Resolve? And another question, is it best now to use the Davinci Wide Gamut for new projects?
