I'm in the middle of a timing belt/water pump/idler R&R on my 95 Legacy. Mine has the old style tensioner, and my Aisin kit came with that style. Of all the parts removed from this engine, the tensioner looks to be nearly new. All idler bearings are a little noisy, and the belt is showing its age. Water pump is good, but an off brand that I am happy to replace.
I'll clamp down and keep that "old" tensioner if I ever have the need to piece together a timing belt swap in the future. Thanks for the heads up on the mounting plate, never knew such a thing was possible. But I guess it does make sense.

I have a 2.2 from I think a '97 legacy in my 98 Forester. It has what sounds like a rod knock but I wonder if it's the tensioner. I watched this through and it seems like maybe not but I figured I'd ask anyways if you have seen that before with that engine swap? 2.2 had approx 100k when it was swapped in and they do have a solid rep for running about forever. I need to do the timing belt this summer and am curious how to go about getting parts for my car given the swap. Great info - really glad I found your channel.

Yeah sometimes a bad timing belt tensioner can sound like rod knock, if the piston in the tensioner fails it allows the belt and pulley to bang around and can sound like rod knock. as for ordering parts I would get a timing kit for a Legacy 2.2, and with the engine being a swap I would pull the timing covers first to confirm what sort of tensioner you have.
