    I see you're having problems with the mandrel / blank staying in the chuck .. I put a heavy duty rubber band on the jaws and I don't have any problems anymore .. keeps that pressure on the blank / mandrel ... just an idea. The jaws still will open when you twist 'em, and close again. The rubber band simply helps it stay closed.

      I had taken the rubber feet off to use on another wrapper. Fixed it with sticky backed sand paper.

    Ok I have a question. You’re talking about different densities in the cork. I recently picked up a bunch of acrylic blanks I’m sure you’re familiar with. How am I going to sand these if I want alternating cork and acrylic rings?. I’m waiting on my lathe so have time to figure it out before hand. Should I sand the acrylic rings down first to the correct diameter then build the grip because the cork sands much easier?

      That's the way I would do it. Even if you use a flat back plat for sand paper, you could still have small dips on the cork areas.
