I refurbished a set of Fried studio 5 towers some time ago using parts express. Also the original manufacturer of tweeters Hiquiphon - lots of help from the proprietor transmission
My 1978 receiver doesn't have a sub out. I love that line. if it was a high end pioneer it probably didn't need one with over 200w a channel. lol 👍👌✌️🎶💯🥂
None of them sound like they have been particularly well designed (mostly for looks) if you want some well designed DIY speakers check out Troels Gravesen speakers. They are not only good looking but well designed.
@@DodgyBrothersEngineering Pretty sure at least some of them are but you are left with no clue with this video. I am aware of Troels just havent built any of his designs, he is a legend though.
@@PhillioDoede it's just things like scaling down the LX521's you can't just take a design that works and scale it down (although that is probably a bad example since it is open baffle and probably won't be as badly effected), but the one with the ribbon tweeter looks like the mids are distanced too far apart. I run a dipole RAAL ribbon, but my mid is as close as I can get it. I was running two mids previously but they were right next to each other. Not either side of the ribbon. At those frequencies I would almost bet money on there being canceling issues. Most of these in this video look better than some of the others I have seen in their other videos where you can see obvious diffraction issues occurring. I like the look of Troels designs because he gives you enough dimensions to give you repeatable results, plus he also puts a lot of effort into the electrical side of the speaker. If I was going to recommend a DIY speaker to anyone it would be one of his designs or a flat pack from GR Research where Danny has already been done the design work at length. I wouldn't try emulate any of these as they are probably best guesses (not that there is anything wrong with that we all have to start somewhere).
@@PhillioDoede the Vespers would be a fairly safe design to almost guess at. Because the tweeter is sealed you only need to make sure that the distance from the centre of the tweeter to any of the 4 edges are not equal (something you could do by eye) and just work out the cavity requirements for the main driver. Keep the tweeter on ear level and provided you get the crossover point right it would be pretty hard to go wrong. One of the really great things about that classic two way design is that you can very easily control the cavity volume by simply blocking off any of the cabinet space you don't need. The box is often way bigger than the volume required, so internal sizing is a breeze.
@@DodgyBrothersEngineering I get your points and I'm not really particularly interested in building any of these because most of them are novelty projects that people want to build for a variety of reasons but nothing anyone is going to go out of their way to replicate. The few designs that have some practical thought and design into them like the Vespers don't have any detailed information so who knows as to how good it is. I'll just build a CSS one of Madisound OEM kits or one of the vetted proven designs, ect. Point is these videos are pretty pointless and I fail to see who the target audience is. If Parts Express wants to promote the hobby this seems like it misses the mark and is missed opportunity. Out of curiosity do you have your designs published anywhere?
@@darkshadowford I agree with these guys! Your speakers are beautiful. I really hope that they sound as good as they look. And, they look like multi thousand dollar speakers. All the very best to you and yours, Kevin
It sure would've been nice to, even at/through limited resolution, hear a quick 30-45 second sample of each of these. That way, folks would at least be able hear 'ballpark' differences between them. Not knockin' the vid, just sayin
Unfortunately UA-cam is very strict on Copywrite laws with music. At the competition we did not us royalty free music. That is the reason we do have any audio clips of the entries.
Just the cabnet work is mind blowing. Especially the piano black.!!!!!!!!
Lots of man hours. Buffing and buffing.
Up down, Danielson
Thank you, it was tough
Parts Express - you should take the best of these speakers and make them into kits.
Some really cool stuff here. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Mini lx521👍 грамотно сделано
I totally love parts express.
And Dayton audio products.
Nice...but im more interested in how they sound / measure and total parts cost and availability.
The third to last pair, with the ribbon tweeter, looks legit.
Thanks!
Looks nice, though I wonder about that driver spacing if they play the same frequencies

amazing

I love the lacquer finish on the Vespers
are you joking?
@@alanrogs3990 looking back, yo are right. just like the rustic homemade look
@@JWapologist If it's a good sounding speaker then great but the sanding and finishing could use some work.
Awesome designs.
I like the Mavericks
mini linkwitz is cool, 1/40th must be by volume
@@@@ P.E. - Sorry, I must have missed something - What are the speakers at the 3:54 minute mark on the side with a 15-inch woofer and horn? - Thanks
Awesome

Are these designs available to follow anywhere? The Vespers look like a really nice high-end mid sized two way.

For a girl the pink speakers are uniq!
How is that 1/40th of the original size? That proportion isn't even close.
Was wondering the same thing. Looks more like 1/4 scale than 1/40th.

140th scale? That would mean the original speaker was the size of a large building.
I thought he said 1/40th....but even that doesn't make sense?? I think the scale is more like 1/4th, ie. quarter scale?
Actually, upon reflection, even 1/4th scale is wrong, I'm leaning toward 1/2 now!
The second guy can't spend $5k on speakers, but he can spend 50k on tools to make a pair.LOL
"Phenis"? Very unfortunate last name to have.
