  • G'day everybody, this is part 1 of what will be a multi-part series going through the hole process I went through to build the LINKWITZ LX521 speaker system for Paul.
    This series will also show all of the relevant information that went into putting Paul's Hi-Fi system together, including having a chat with Paul to get his thoughts on his new system after I have installed it in his home.
    This should be really interesting. I hope you enjoy all of the process that went into building these speakers and putting this system together for Paul.
    There is a little bit of housekeeping to take care of in this video. I talked about the new baffle being sent from Germany. This was sent by Dr Frank Brenner of Linkwitz free of charge to us. My apologies for not mentioning this in the voiceovers on the still pictures.
    Cheers, Shane.

    Now is a good time for me to say the following.
    Shane put a lot of work and brought considerable care and expertise in working with many different types of materials to this build.
    When I was considering getting a LX521 kit, I was chatting to Shane, and said that while I was really interested in the Linkwitz speakers, I doubted that I would have the skills to complete such a build (even with the offer of help from a mate who taught electronics who offered assistance with the wiring, soldering etc). Shane offered to do the build, and I very gratefully accepted that offer.
    Without Shane, and also Jon De Sensi (OAD Ultrafidelity) and engineer Kevin, what you are now seeing wouldn't have happened.
    Now is the perfect time to say it publicly to Shane and several other people.
    Thank you!!!!!!!

      Thanks Paul🙏 It's now my time to tell everybody that this was an absolute pleasure for me to do. Paul is well aware of all of the help he gave me and many other people who needed his help in relation to a bogus cable operator. We all had to put extensive applications together with copious amounts of paperwork. Paul was nothing short of brilliant and did this for all the people who had to put this legal action together.
      Every one of those people is sincerely grateful to Paul for all his wonderful work, not least of which me, and this was my way to say thank you to him.
      And out of all of this, I've gained a wonderful friendship. So that's my compensation.🙂🎧🙏

      @@shanestephenson8423Did this kit come with footers, Thoughts for installing footers like the Stack Audio isolation widgets?

    Should be an interesting series to follow and good for people looking at or already owning these speakers. Sounds like Josh is being kept very busy as I have also ordered their isolators for my speakers & components.

      Yes that's really the reason why I wanted to do this in such detail, as a reference for people to go back to if they want to build this speaker system, which is the cheapest way to buy it, or as you say for people that want to get a different perspective possibly. That's excellent news about the Stack Audio isolators. I'm sure you will not be disappointed.🎧🙂👍

    Great kit assembly video, Shane! I’m surprised the German kit company didn’t pack things better, given the journey from Europe to Australia. Double-boxing seems like a minimal requirement.

      Hi Drago, Yes, I do agree with you. I'll show a little more closely what the boxs looked like when they got all the way over here in the next video. The first video really didn't show the true extent of the damage to the boxes. It really wasn't adequate enough, and as a result, some of the veneers were lightly scuffed, which I had to sand. And of course, you saw some of the chips on the corner of the back edge of the top baffle, also not acceptable, given what this speaker system costs.👍🙂🎧

    I’m glad I built mine myself instead of going “flat pack”. One of my boxes containing speakers was damaged (hole punched in the side) in transit but luckily the units were not damaged……. Shipping will always be an issue that is out of their control. If there is one thing Dr Frank could improve is the packaging of all the components.

    • @shanestephenson8423
      @shanestephenson8423  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Frank, Yes, I agree with you. The component packing leaves a bit to be desired. In my case there was just a not enough packing material between all the timber pieces in the box, so those pieces were able to slide around in transit and crash into each other and create superficial small damage. And on a speaker system worth this much money, I just don't think that's adequate enough or acceptable. Unfortunately for Linkwitz, that is within their control.👍🙂🎧

    The part of the baffle that broke was always going to be subject to breaking like it did as it is very narrow in this area. I looked at these a few years ago and they looked to have a lot better finish on their website. I didn't end up buying them as the price kept going up every time I looked. Although what you and Paul are doing with them will end up with a much better speaker system. They do sound very good. Dean

      Hi Dean, Yeah, the new baffles are really works of art, and sonically, they are sounding better than the original baffles did.
      There will be quite a few instalments in this series.
      I want to make sure that if people are going to do this, they have something they can follow to get the same results I did here, as I go through the whole process I went through so people will see every step of the way.
      Then there will be, of course, a final thoughts video about exactly what I'm hearing at the end of all of this and the comparisons between the original baffle and the new ones.
      👍🙂🎧

    I'm looking to replace all drivers, save for the tweeter, with Purifi devices. Lower distortion and better linearity. The crossover points should be the same but I need to look into the DSP-based equalisation that was realised for the SEAS drivers.

    • @shanestephenson8423
      @shanestephenson8423  3 місяці тому

      Yes, but be careful because the seas drivers that are used in the Linkwitz LX521s are specifically designed for that baffle. I'm not sure if changing to different drivers would affect the outcome of the baffles performance.
      I agree, the dsp aspect is worth looking into for sure.👍🎧

    oh too bad. the speakers was starting to come together. sorry about the Top baffle plate. but IMO the Aluminum piece looks so so beautiful.

      There's plenty more to come in this series. I think there'll be about five or six episodes when I edit all the footage I have, right through to when I delivered the system and set it up in Paul's listening room.👍🙂🎧

    Forgive me for potentially asking a repetitive question. Are you and Paul discussing installing set fittings in the bases to accept Stack Audio footer bolts? Since it’s an open baffle design, such a small modification to the base panels shouldn’t compromise sonics even if you elect not to install Stack Audio footers.

    • @shanestephenson8423

      Hi Drago, we've decided to use around an inch thick piece of ply that we will be putting an M10 thread insert into. We have ordered the appropriate adapter bolts from Stack Audio. I'll definitely be shooting lots of footage of everything like that, but I won't see it until I get to Paul's house next week. He has organised to have a speaker manufacturer local to him build the platforms.

    Not sure how the holes came to be drilled at the 1,3,5,7,9,11 points on a clock..mine are 2,4,6,8,10,12 points maybe for the speaker terminal wiring layouts, but this is behind the baffle so hidden from view. Thought I have seen others with the even number points too.

      When I ordered the kit from Germany, the photo of the top baffle on the website had the holes for attaching the lower mid driver at the places which you say - 12, 2,4 etc. These would be much better places to insert screws in an HDF baffle (because of the failure in the HDF baffle at the 11 and 1 o'clock spots).
      When we decided to get the Aluminium/Panzerholz baffles made here in Australia, we left the holes at 11 and 1 o'clock etc, because the different materials, and different way of attaching the drivers would take away the problems which occurred with the HDF baffles.
      Shane found that the Sikaflex 221 adhesive worked very well - it can be found worldwide.

    • @shanestephenson8423
      @shanestephenson8423  4 місяці тому

      Yes, I suspect they have changed the whole position because this is probably, but I could never confirm this it's happened before it did to us.
      But I agree I've seen the whole positions at the 12 o'clock, six o'clock point on other speakers systems, which makes much more sense because you're not drilling a hole and then screwing into the narrowest part of the baffle.
      I've worked with MDF and HDF quite a bit in my career, and I have on rare occasions seen that dry crumbling material coming from where it cracked before. I suspect this is not anything to do with Linkwitz and certainly no fault of Dr Frank Brenner but simply a manufacturing fault in a man-made timber board. That's what this looked like to me. It was just extremely unfortunate that it was right at the narrowest part of the baffle.🎧🙂👍
