    I made a Cocteau Twins VHS bootleg for rental at Kim's when I worked there. I also called Amy Sedaris for copies of Strangers With Candy episodes. Paul Dinello delivered HD master tape copies!

    VHS edition of movies that most people don't know the names of... Kim's Video and Music is like my house... My house is full of VHS/Laserdisk/DVD prints of similar movies/series. That's why I use Letterboxd, to meet people like me.

    I miss videos stores, it was part of my social outing on a friday, the fact they are gone really does suck, now a browser tells me everything I need to know, how dystopian.

    I worked in an indie video store 30 years ago. They had all of the Russ Meyer movies (even Blacksnake). Back then the only way to get his titles was to call his production company, which often meant you would be talking to RM himself when you placed an order. All of his films belong in the Criterion Collection.

    I just had a dream last night that I went to New York and brought back 3 VHS movies. They were 2001: space odyssey, 2010: the year we made contact, and Spaceballs. Don’t ask me why, I’m just as confused as you are.

      There are a ton of Troma movies on Tubi. 🙂 They used to have a ton of their films on UA-cam as well, but presumably moved them off because the revenue is better at Tubi and B-movie friendly sites like it.

    In my youth, many many years ago, I worked at the Kim’s Video location by Columbia University. Paid terribly but it was like working at your local clubhouse. If you knew about movies and music you very easily pulled Columbia, Barnard and the Manhattan School of Music girls. Plus free movies and cd’s.

    • @rickyrougs
      @rickyrougs 3 місяці тому +7

      @@DR-es5ey I get the point. My comment was more in regards to the idea that the experience of going to a video rental store is dead. It’s free to go the library and they have a decent selection of movies that you can walk through, physically look at each dvd case and decide which one you want. Yes they don’t have every movie ever and a “true cinephile” probably wont find something new there but its still a reliable place to find movies.

    Streaming has really been a gatekeeper movies in my opinion, as it tends to lock people into the same few options over and over, despite the promise of selection. I love this video by contrast.

    Much respect to letterboxd and Kim's video but the film at 8:36 is NOT the
    jarmusch dp'ed Sleepwalk, it's from a short film with the same title from 10 years ago.
    (you can also see it is filmed digitally and not 80's film)

    people claim you can find anything on streaming is full of it. there's some films by michelangelo antonioni that i want to see such as some of his work from the 1950s that aren't easily available to find while his 1980 film "the mystery of oberwald" is very hard to find and it's in a decent quality at best. there's so many movies not available on streaming no matter what streaming service you have.

    Just a bit pretentious. 😂 VHS is important in the sense of preserving films where they have no other physical media release or the original film negative is lost. But if a film like Scanners is available in a better format, yeah, don't watch the VHS. 😅 It's in full screen which isn't even it's theatrical format, let alone the shitty audio/video quality.

    • @eyeswidevideo
      @eyeswidevideo 3 місяці тому +1

      He's a filmmaker himself, so I'm sure he knows the difference. I think he prefers the VHS because of nostalgia.

    • @mmayer1558
      @mmayer1558 3 місяці тому +4

      Idk I could see the appeal in lower quality transfers of movies like Scanners. The roughness of the visuals kind of complements its tone. There are a few movies Criterion released where it's like "ok it's great that it's in 2K or 4K but at the same time it's a dingy movie and it's weird that it looks so good" 😂

      I think it’s just the way they edit this video. Mia barely says anything and just nods her head to every thing he says. Would’ve been nice to see a bit more interplay, also his constant breathing in and out on the mic is rough. Comes off as just a run on from him about the store. Cool to hear him talk about the tapes though.
