  • Is The Criterion Channel the best thing to ever happen to cinephiles or is it even worth your money? Here’s everything you need to know about Criterion’s new streaming service. Plus, some wishlist features I would love to see implemented.
Are you a Criterion Channel subscriber? If so, what do you think of the service so far and what have you been watching? What do you think will make the experience even better? Please join the conversation in the comments below! And if you have any additional tips, thoughts and/or questions, please chime in as well!
(Note: The Criterion Channel is fully owned and operated by the Criterion Collection. There is no "deal" between WarnerMedia and Criterion other than Criterion still has the option to license the streaming rights of certain Warner Bros. films. Thanks to Michael Hutchins for clarifying this point.)

That clip was shocking. Look up the definition of "bigotry" and you'll realize how horrible his words are. He's literally getting butthurt like a child over the thought of people watching a movie on what is statistically the most color accurate display in an average person's house. Most people don't have an OLED TV, but most people do (for better or for worse, burn in is still a thing) have an OLED phone. That's wild that he's so closed minded that he gets so mad about people wanting to watch on a super crisp, super bright, super color accurate screen just because it's tiny and pocketable. I choose to use older phones for a few reasons, and even I am feeling like "jeez, grandpa, have you not upgraded your phone at all in the past decade"? What does he think smartphones are like? Seriously. And yes, I know the comment I'm responding to is over 3 years old. My comment is written with that context in mind.

Great video and overview of the service, and I agree on pretty much everything you've posted here in concerns to your wishlist, one thing I would hope that CC stays away from is the implementation of a recommendation algorithm. One of the things that I think helps CC stand out from other streaming services is that it relies more on curation via their collections (such as the excellent Columbia Noir collection) and their double features. Algorithms actually deter the user from exploration and instead keeps them on a linear path that doesn't really challenge them to get out of their comfort zone - they create an echo chamber of safe bets (if you liked Hidden Fortress we recommend Seven Samurai). Algorithms have made services like Netflix completely obtuse as I'm never exposed to great swathes of content that I may like, but because I watched and liked a WWII documentary I'm recommended nothing but movies with Nazis (and gods forbid you allow your children to use your profile).
    Just my two cents.

    • @cineflect
      @cineflect  5 років тому

Fair point, Jesse. I can see both sides on the inclusion of a recommendation algorithm. I’d like to think that CC subscribers have a more open and veracious appetite for cinema and wouldn’t let that stop them from exploring further, but you never know...
Speaking of profiles, that is another item on my wishlist. I would love to see the option for multiple profiles with separate My Lists, histories, etc.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

My big question is if one adds all these movies and collections to their Wishlist, and Criterion announces it's pulling it off in a month - what happens then? I'd suspect one would try to watch it before it goes. But if one's into that Zaotichi or Tree Of Life et al, and doesn't want to be distracted, can the movie or collection to be terminated be saved on something for later watching/keeping?

I'm so torn on this one -- I love the Criterion stuff, obviously, but I'm so put off on the price.
Yeah, it's a ton of great content -- but we've now reached the point where cutting the cord and streaming all these different services cost me more than cable (okay, bit of an exaggeration -- but that day is coming, and it's coming soon...)
Have fun with Zatoichi -- I love those films. I'm not only a horror guy, but I did tons of stuff on Asian action cinema and samurai movies back in the day too. Once you're done there, go to Lone Wolf and Cub. :p

If you watch your film on an Xperia 1 ii WH1000XM4 Tidal 3D audio display with it's 120hz 4k OLED display with a 21:9 aspect ratio than you are experiencing the film more than most others, I prefer my movies on a large screen, but I felt that was a good argument against the big screen discussion.

You can use a VPN on the site to sign up then once you're registered it just lets you use it wherever. There's a way to get the app on a firestick by signing into the US Amazon site too in a similar way, I've had it running on my fire stick outside the US/Canada pretty much since it came out with no issues

My guess people force themselves to like all these movies just because of the criterion name and packaging. “Wow such cinema”

    ...4 years later...
...my new concern over The Criterion Channel is that it will start moving towards more mainstream films in favor over foreign, arthouse, indie and underrated/undiscovered fare...
...case in point...December 2023...according to many online sources...
..."Josie and the Pussycats" will be shown on The Criterion Channel...Josie and the FUCKING Pussycats...🤦

If it’s not Janus or criterion I’m outta there.

Just canceled the subscription after I don’t have the right TV, which means I can’t screen share from an iPad/iPhone and can’t use an AV adapter. Plus theres no PS4 app. Gonna have to boycott their products until the service is done correctly because Im not wasting more money 🤦‍♂️

They censored French Connection. At 10 mins and 6 seconds into the stream, it jump cuts so Popeye Doyle doesn't say racial slurs. $106 a year for censored films?

This youtube page is useless. It is like a 10 minute infomercial that has no useful information. I was expecting something like a manual that shows step by step how to use criterion.
