Hey hey, I'm looking forward to this one!
I'd probably have 1/person axes - and other tools - on top-up so they can pick one up if they need to, they'll get it done. I think they'll also repair if you drop off a used tool and pick up a new one for yourself.

On the second raid for me they were way tougher than the first raid. After a few failed attempts I finally beat them and it seemed to make a huge difference having a shield wall for them to run into.. set the stance to hold and as they get close switch to charge.
I'd say by the time you get to the second winter you need to have better weapons, pitchforks and T1 swords and some better clothing, they will most likely bring an archer.. another tip is always make sure everyone is fully stocked up on food on raid day and have some spares in all companions inventory so they don't wander off just as a raid is taking place.

Raids get worse but fences help.

I think after a bandit attack, you can raid their camp for more loot 😁
