You can see that Marinette’s family isn’t rich, they are middle class at best, with parents working their asses off to give their child a good life. And she just decides to be an economic burden on her family to fly across the world to stalk her high school crush!? It’s getting hard to sell me the responsible hero image right now…
Hold up wasn’t she like super concern about no one protecting Paris for her trip to New York and now she just leaves everything in the dust to follow Adrien in Shanghai
Eh, I feel like that with the original movie. Anything where they don't defeat the villain in 20 minutes can feel too long. I thought the second movie was great though. They're focusing more on the characters and less on action.
the shanghai special was just one of those things which was meant to be entertaining and educational for the kids and not the adults who watch it in hopes of intense dramatic sequences No one is really sure why they turned this into a movie special since it felt more like an episode focusing on serious character development, but since the company is the one which decides how the episodes are aired, its likely they wanted to take advantage of the special taking place in another country in order to attract attention from shanghai as part of their "Miraculous world". The show already garners a ton of attention from multiple countries around the world so I definitely feel like the company tries to take advantage of the shows diversity to continue to attract more countries to the show, with such a wide audience it goes to show you how the series cant please everyone, leaving our preference for the new york special as nothing but our own personal preference . So far, the shows methods appear to be working because this special blew up! it broke view records, garnering a high number of chinese to the show.
@@penguin32700 I thought it was a lot better than the first because it was more focused. You don't need the whole cast around for a special in another country. The conflict felt more personal and serious.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's creepy Marinette just basically crossed half the world just too see Adrien. Not only that, she lied, stating she was going to go to her uncle birthday
i always thought it was creepy. your uncle who loves you and has shown he wants to get closer to you is thrown to the wayside by a boy who would never accept your advances
The worst part is her excuse to her parents was in itself the reason the writers could have just given her to go in the first place; go because she's visiting her uncle, she sees adrien there or finds out there he's in the area and she wants to go see him/meet up with him; they must think it's funny to go out of their way to make her unhinged instead, but no one's laughing.
The premise is absolutely terrible. Marinette freaking goes to the other part of the world to stalk on her crush and track him on the phone (to say hi to him?? What was she thinking??) with her parents lifetime savings to learn about her heritage. Which is never mentioned again. It's unnerving.
@@derive8251 It really isn't that hard when she has family in Shanghai. "I wish I could go to shanghai and visit family (and get more miraculous stuff)" "Oh hi Marinette. I overheard you talking about shanghai. My father and I are going there for business. We can take you". Boom.
Ikr they could have started the episode with Marinette explaining to Alya how she's going to be absent the next week because she'd traveling to see her mom's family side because of an special day or something and then Nino entering the conversation saying something around wow Adrien is going too because of a runway. Still not the greatest, but at least Marinnete doesn't end up like a stalker
It's so weird that they made her stalk Adrien all the way to Shanghai 😭 why not just make her visit her uncle for a genuine reason and Adrien's trip is at the same time idc if it's contrived it's better than further characterizing Marinette so creepily
It doesn't even have to be contrived since they are in the same class, have the same friends and she's a designer too. She could just muse out loud that she wants to visit family and have Adrien offer to take while them. Hell, have an event happen in Shanghai that Marinette wants to go to and the Agreste company is sponsoring or something.
There's nothing wrong with contrivance itself, it's always in the execution. Totally agree about not invoking Marinette's continued stalker behavior. Please, please can we just drop that part of her character?
I mean atleast in new york she didn't "stalk" him exactly, since the whole class was going too, but in Shanghai she not only ditched her friends on their picnic BUT ALSO BAILS ON HER UNCLE'S BIRTHDAY AND WASTE HER PARENTS LIFETIME SAVING JUST TO STALK ADRIEN
It would have been more interesting if Marinette was really interested in her family's culture, travel to China together and then meeting Adrien as a coincidence there, I don't know, still getting lost and meeting him by chance, having the oportunity to talk or something. Writers have to learn that Marinette stalking Adrien is not funny nor cute, it's creepy. The rest of the special would have been the same.
It was fine in season 1, but then they kept milking it worse through out season 2 to 4 Honestly I hate how disgustingly her crush is, especially on the episode where Adrien pretended to be a wax statue and Marinette became SUPER CREPPY smelling him 😬
@@anez1266 that part will be remembered as one of Marinette's creepiest moments in the series. It doesn't help how her friends enable her to be creepy, saying stuff like " you are the only one who knows Adrien's schedule!" as if it was a good thing, and the fact that she knows it's creepy, because she's afraid of Adrien finding it out, and instead of changing it keeps getting worse.
My biggest problem with this movie is the fact that Marinette manipulates 14 years worth of savings out of her parents, claiming she wants to spend time with her uncle, but is really just going so she can stalk Adrien and ditch her uncle. Thing is, they could have fixed this by having her parents already have planned to go to Shanghai, and Marinette finds out while she's there that Adrien is also there, and then let everything else play out the way it did.
Marinette going to Shanghai for Adrien is continuing the trend of the writers just making her stalker tendencies dialed up to a 100 rather than making her grow.
I mean... the special is supposed to take place between season 2 and 3, so I guess back then she hasn't changed that much (not that she currently has, but a lot happened in season 3, so you get what I'm saying).
not reallly important but i love when the people/things hawkmoth akumatizes turn on him or get out of control, his face whenever it happens just sends me, like when he akumatized a baby and couldn't control it (which happened twice, you'd think he'd learn lmao) or when he akumatized a robot that turned on him and almost killed him, i was laughing so hard
People be saying that when he Akumatized Adrien in Ephemeral Adrein was Force to obey him because he was Akumatized. Like clearly that not hiw Hawkmoth Powers Works. He was Force to obey because of the Ring in his Finger.
Pretty accurate review of the disappointment I felt for this special One thing: Marinette is on the news because her uncle reported her missing. And of course he will show the police a photo. I was going to say "well dang it does not take the news this quickly to show missing cases still" but I forgot that her uncle is like a super famous chef worldwide so......makes sense
@@Brindlebrother "Oh, we are playing Charade! No, don't tell me! It is....a Button from a Shirt! No? A deep Hole in the Ground? A black Hole in Space?!?"
7:31: sure, the fact that this is a kid's show could be part of the reason why they didn't have Fei beat him up; but I think from a story perspective, the reason why she didn't was because she realized she couldn't take revenge into her own hands. After all, that's the whole reason why she wasn't able to unlock the dragon power in the first place. Her heart was filled with vengeance because of the death of her father, the destruction of his school, and having her bracelet stolen. She needed to learn that revenge isn't the answer and that true justice focuses on righting wrongs, not personal retribution. Having her take her anger out on Cash after just unlocking the dragon ability would've made everything she'd learned about justice vs. vengeance meaningless. Taking Cash to the police, rather than taking him out herself, was the right decision.
Okay I don't want to defend this movie, I hate it and gods it hurts my Chinese ass, BUT!!! But...tbh it's not really a defense anyways just a correction, but anyways, the Dragon Renling isn't named "Long", Fei is just literally speaking Mandarin saying "Dragon" to hopefully transform into a dragon. She says "Hou" for Monkey, "Ying" for Eagle/Hawk, "Xiong" for Bear, etc etc, which are all just the Mandarin words (single character at least) for the animals she's changing into. Aside from that little tidbit, I agree with basically everything else in the video lmfao. Edit: Yes I forgot Longg the Kwami existed lmao. I'm just talking about the Renling in this comment.
As an Asian American who originates from China as well, that is such a mood and thank you for sharing it. Whenever I see Western depictions of Asian culture without the proper study it hurts.
Wait does that mean Jake Long from American Dragon's name is literally Jake Dragon Edit: Lol nevermind he addresses it too. Should've watched the whole video first
@@scarlettthomas8237 Oh yeah I forgot about the Dragon Kwami lmao but yeah his name is just "Dragon G" then pls kjaksdj. The comment was really just to clarify the Renling transformation phrases part.
My conclusion from these videos is that people like miraculous for what it could be over what it actually is. The possibilities the series sets up really starts one's imagination going, but the show itself could be better.
You're so right... I want to like this show so much, but for me it's been unwatchable since season 2 The fancomics are great, and really what kept me going, they also do a much better job at consistent characterisation without making Adrien boring and Marinette creepy.
Truth. I watched from the first to third season, then noticed all the inconsistencies and character development disasters. After that, I switched over to Fan Fiction. AO3 is literally saving their arse. 😂
I think that Season 3 was ok, but they keep sidelining Adrien too much for the amount of favoritism fans have for him, as well as downplaying his abilities and skills as a hero during writing. Season 4 had a strong start with the first two episodes, but it’s been pretty eh so far.
For real, I love the premise and fanfic-ified characters (who somehow have more personality, growth and drive than the ones in the show), but I've never been able to finish a full episode of the show out of sheer frustration. I didn't even bother trying to stomach any past season 2. Forget the official lore, we can make our own 😢
Like everything else in the show, this special had so much potential. Ngl, the animation was great but the storyline was really rushed. It would’ve been nice to see a montage of Fei learning how to use the prodigious since it took her like five minutes to do so, or to see Marinette travel to Shanghai for a different reason. The special also needed some character development from literally anyone, since the only two unproblematic characters were the Gorilla and Marinette’s uncle.
I did like this episode at first and the new character, until Marinette decided stalking adrien all the way to china. It was overall ok, I would love a spin off of the new character with the prodigious and chinese lion miraculous.
*Reminder* : This special occurs before season 3 or during season 3 but definitely before she became guardian. Honestly, same I'll always choose New York special over this one. The only thing that struck to me in the special was Hawkmoth turning to dust lmao. I thought we'd learnt more about Marinette's Chinese Culture and family. Though, i was really curious about Gabriel's knowledge about the whole predigious miraculous , i theorised that it was def him who destroyed fei's father's school and that Emilie and him were the Americans who Fei's father taught his culture and Gabriel used it against him to destroy his school to get the predigious for himself. Which is why Gabriel said he waited for 15 years(? It's been a while i watched the special) for this to happen to get the predigious power to fight against lb and Cn
No, it's definitely after season 3. We know for sure New York is after season 3, and they reference Eagle (who debuted for the first time ever) in the Shanghai special. The only reason Thomas said it was before was so people didn't realize how horrible of a person Marinette is.
@@sarcasticsparkles i don't really remember the eagle miraculous mentioned in the Shanghai special tho! Can you tell me if it was in the beginning or end of the special?? I do remember seeing Cash the guy who burned Fei's father's school at the end of New york Special to some guy with and Eagle box miraculous which kinda shows that Shanghai is before New York
the one inch punch thing is actually a thing in kungfu/wuxia movies im malaysian chinese and i basically grew up watching those cause my dad is like come see this good shit child its mostly for like scaring off opponents by like i could hurt you REALLY badly but i choose not to, so scram
There's something I never got. In the Shanghai special, Marinette can't understand Chinese and gets lost but in the New York Special she can easily talk to anybody in New York. Does she know English or do they all know French? I understand if the New York students knew French cause they probably teach it in school but how does everyone else know French? Also did the superheroes just not care they were both away from Paris? In the last movie, Ladybug got so mad at Cat Noir because he didn't tell her he was leaving cause Paris wouldn't be protected, but this time, neither of them bothered to tell each other about their travel plans.
They also had a trip to London in one episode and English is the most common second language in France. All the students probably take regular English lessons.
Oh shoot I totally forgot about that second point. YEAH It makes absolutely no sense to set that up conflict in the first world movie, and completely toss it for future ones. Especially since that's a problem that... never went away.
Pretty much every student in France speaks English just as most students in England speak French (unless they went to a private school or something and learnt Mandarin, German, Latin or sometimes Spanish instead)
2:10 Straight up reminded me of that gag in the Scott Pilgrim movie where Scott just draws a blob to represent Ramona Flowers and everyone somehow understands he's looking for her ahahah
i commented online how Marinette is a stalker and needs to know that she can breathe without a boyfriend and how alya pushes Marinette to talk to Adrien even when marinette made it clear she moved on (new york special ) and a girl aged 12 responded with "Its ok to stalk someone if you love them " and i'm terrified to this day on how powerful and terrifying Marinette's influence
Marinette's behavior is wrong in many ways, first she lies to her parents so that they spend all their savings so that she can harass Adrien in another country, it is as if Adrien did not have permission to go on a trip without Marinette, then he leaves his uncle abandoned on his birthday, third he left his duty to protect Paris to a lake just because Marinette has to watch Adrien all the time and the worst thing is that Thomas she always posts comments saying that Marinette's stalking behavior is completely normal for a teenage girl in love, as she expects me to believe that Marinette is the best heroine if she always throws anyone under the bus whenever she can if that means being around Adrien, Because when Marinette does bad things, everything ends well for her as if nothing else, but if Chloe does the same there if they judge and punish her
9:08: I think the reason why she was able to finally transform into a dragon wasn't just because of that brief conversation between herself and Marinette. She was trying to save Marinette from falling to her death. She chose to focus primarily on saving someone's life rather than her own personal vendetta, and that's why she was able to transform into a dragon. I do agree with you, though, that this whole scene kind of fell short of its full potential. It was a bit rushed and sloppy in how it was written (as a lot of the plot was), but not too rushed/sloppy that you can't tell what direction the writers were trying to take with this. Keep in mind that this is a kid's show, so it's not always going to be well-written since they're trying to simplify complex topics for the sake of the younger viewers. This doesn't justify their always falling short in the story's potential (both with this special and the show as a whole), but it does explain it a little bit. All in all, I didn't mind this special, and I think you were a bit too hard on it; but at the same time, I agree with you that it could've been written and presented better.
I just wanted to clear this up, at 2:45 you stated that Marientte was a criminal but the actual reason her photo was on the tv is because her uncle called the police to report her missing so the reason people are staring at them after is because they think Fei is abducting her which is why Fei gives herself and Marinette a disguise, just wanted to clear up the confusion, love your videos though and great job 🥰
For real!! I use to love them but I can’t stand it. Honestly anyone is better with Marinette like Luka or Fei. At least she is natural with them, doesn’t treat them badly & help each other become better
@@adricsoti3719 At this rate I'm starting to think that Kagami might be a better love interest to Adrian than Marinette. Also I would really love it at the end of the series if Marinette and Adrien don't end up together and instead Marinette goes with Luka (or someone else), and Adrienne ends up with Kagami (or someone else.)
Ah yes. The character that sparked such controversy that they dyed her hair a hideous red color as a compromise. I really dislike some of the designs Miraculous has been creating recently. Astro Cat is bad for the reason that I should not be noticing giant bat wings before the cat part of a *cat themed superhero* but man, they really could’ve tried to come up with a decent design here? I feel like this design was just lazy, especially with how they just slapped a different color down.
@@sirmel11 yeah. So when they first released the trailer there was uproar about giving a Chinese character both blond hair and green eyes when she transformed. And while I understand that it was likely done so she matched the spirits in the prestigious, it did look kind of bad. The problem now is that to fix it, they just made her hair a bright red and overall I find her general color pallet hard to look at, with her two different saturation’s of red on a saturated yellow
I've never watched a single episode of this show, but even I'm disappointed by the premise of this. This is the one time where Marionette would have a 100% legit reason to go overseas on her own to follow her own plot for her own reasons. She is Chinese, it's not absurd to think that she'd go to China for a little while. But no, can't have that, let's just have the basic plot of her stalking her crush *across the globe* that could justify her going to literally any other location rather than using this unique opportunity to explore her heritage. Can't give her any kind of agency aside from love interest obsession, I guess.
5:42 hell even the Dragon Kwami is named Longg (cuz hes a Chinese dragon) but in their defense, they did name all the Renlings based on all their animals but like twice (the dragon is Long Long, Xiong Xiong is the bear, etc.)
Out of all the bad things about Marinette’s stalking, can we just acknowledge that Marinette’s parents were actually saving up money so she could go to Shanghai one day so she can connect with her Chinese roots and learn about her culture…AND SHE WASTES IT ON A TRIP TO STALK ADRIEN?!?
I honestly don't know why they made Marinette go to Shanghai just for Adrien rather than learning about her mom's side. I mean that's just a waste by seeing him as a stalker. But overall, it was ok it could've been better. I actually like Fei's character tbh.
The Prodigious is different from Miraculous. Only the holder can see the renlings unlike kwamis. Besides at least this one makes Fei look completely different
You know what’s hilarious? A show from the early 2000s called “American Dragon Jake Long” actually did this exact same premise but BETTER as their series finale. As in, the entire family went to Hong Kong instead of the main character sneaking off, he was obsessively trying to meet up with his crush because she had moved there permanently and he’d likely never see her again (rather than just for the luls), etc etc. This is kind of amazing to me because, while I adored the show, it was cheesier than macaroni, seemed to have the budget of a ham sandwich, and had maybe 30 minutes total to tell the same story and still pulled it off. So the fact that its story was better than a full-length movie is kind of hilarious to me. It also makes me wonder whether the similarities are a coincidence or blatant rip-off.
I agree Negative Legend, compared to Miraculous New York Miraculous Shanghai felt like a huge diappointment and let down i mean i enjoyed both films, but my biggest gripe with them is that they are basically like the Pokemon films by that i mean both of the Miraculous films aren't even canon to the actual Miraculous series and they are treated as a separate continuity.
I found it so disappointing that Marinette's uncle was so glad to have Marinette with him in Shanghai HE EVEN CANCELLED ALL PLANS FOR HER and all she was there for was Adrien. 😐
the scene with marinette drawing a circle to represent the earrings is like the scene in scott pilgrim where he draws a scribble and someone says “oh yeah that’s ramona flowers”
As someone who wishes to connect more to their heritage and traditions, the fact that Marinette lied to her parents about wanting to learn about her chinese roots really hurts my heart. I WISH I had the money to travel and see my family or learn nahuatl. and no, I don't care this takes place between whatever season of mlb, Marinette's behaviour is outright CREEPY; it was creepy in s2 and s3 and its still creepy now, it's not funny and it gets even worse more episodes pass. No its not a character flaw because no one ever call her out for being a creepy stalker, HER FRIENDS ENCOURAGE HER!
3:18 Marinette is actually half Chinese on her mother’s side so she may not stick out as much appearance wise but her inability to speak Mandarin is what would make her stand out.
Pretty sure "The Prodigious" is supposed to be the original/first miraculous. I agree this special was extremely underwhelming. Marinette is back to obsessing over only Adrien. Fey was done very dirty. And the Status Quo remains.
Poor Adrien/Chat Noir. They never let him be a true main character. Come on guys, his name is in the show's freaking title! Let him get a plot and maybe some character development? In fact, maybe stop having both of your titular characters be defined by little more than their crushes? They have so much more potential than that...
it’s so disgusting that a white man wrote about an asian girl pretending to explore her heritage just to visit her white boy crush… like just have her learn more about her culture and heritage ?!?! it’s just so disrespectful
It's kinda disgusting that you are pointing out the author's race because of the problem. Legit the writing just wasn't good don't bring race into this
I don't think the races are really relevant. The storytelling is just bad on its own. For context, I'm someone that only has a moderate interest in Miraculous Ladybug. I've seen up to the end of season 3, but I don't follow the show's production, the fandom, or really much of the show's lore. Maybe my take is outdated, and if so correct me, but with that said, this show in general just so... bad, but in a weird way. Marinette's actions are in-line with her character, but that's the thing, her characterization is kind of garbage. Her motivations orbit around Adrian way too much, and same goes for Cat Noir with Ladybug. This show tries to have an ongoing plot thread but doesn't allow Marinette or Adrian to actually grow as characters much at all. Marinette's obsessions over Adrian aren't just ridiculous, they're outright creepy. If she was a real person I feel like she'd be forced to see a specialist of some sort with how much she thinks about Adrian. And for Cat Noir, he keeps flirting with Ladybug despite her saying no multiple times, and pretty much always falls for the fake Ladybug that confesses her love trick. Maybe these problems were addressed in later seasons, but these were things I noticed throughout the run of the show up to the point I watched. The issue isn't that Marinette is Asian and Adrian is white. The issue is that Marinette's character satellites around Adrian far too much, and even when given the opportunity to do something different like having Marinette learn about her family's culture they still opt for Marinette's motivation to be lusting after Adrian. This isn't an issue that only came up because they did a special set in China, it's an issue that's existed for the whole show. If you change the races and/or the location of this special but keep the motivations the same the story is still just as bad.
The literal fact when she was doing her little speech to the person that burned down her father school the fact that lady buddy can or we doing your awesome superhero poses which was fantastic
During this special I felt that there were obvious retcons. Like doesn't Tikki disappear when Marinette takes off the miraculous? And if Tikki can go through objects, why didn't she do that sooner when she was separated from Marinette? And I thought negative feelings get you akumatized? The guardian was pretty calm from my understanding yet he was akumatized. He didn't have negative feelings unlike the greedy guy.
The weird and kind of uncomfortable thing was that all the “guardians” where based on the zodiac but they all where the same color the thing is they could of had Asian meanings IN THE DIFFRENT COLORS BUT NOOOO ALLL RED AND YELLOW. I’m Chinese they MISSED an opertunity
Fun fact for anyone watching, the prodigious (I hope I spelt that right) and the way how it works/powers are based on the animals on the Lunar Calendar. Also if anyone else mentioned this before I do apologize if this is something that's been repeated a lot. Though I give credit to the person who was the first one to mention this fact. In any case I do agree with the rest of the video cause I liked the idea they were going with but the way how they executed it was very poorly made. For me personally I would have loved if Marinette's family went to Shanghai together to visit the mom side of the family for a special cultural event such as the Lunar New Year. That way when they show the prodigious it makes better sense as to what it does and connects with. And could show a side story of Marinette trying to connect with her mother side of the family/culture but has difficulty since she was raised in France her whole life. That way it can connect to people who are mix-race and those who only ever knew one half of their family but never the other. (Idk I feel this type of story would have built character growth for Marinette.) This can also remove the whole stalking Adrian thing cause ya thats creepy. I agree with others that they should have bump into each other by coincidence instead of stalking. Although it might be hard for them to bump into each other since the place is huge and Adrian is probably there for the dad's company/model agency so he is under strict rules. So make it in which while Marinette's family are watching TV together like watching a special TV program that has Adrian being interviewed live. Then Marinette's mom or dad mention to her while she cooking something in the kitchen saying "Hey, isn't that your classmate Adrian? Apparently he's here too." (Idk but something like that). Then have her freak out as she usually does then we go off from there as usually for the special. This is how I feel and how I would have made at least the beginning of the special since this to me makes more sense.
Marinette stalking Adrian to Shanghai is far too creepy no matter how you look at it. And you'd think an up and coming fashion designer like her would be more detailed when trying to draw earrings, like adding an ear to make it clear what they were supposed to be. I was definitely disappointed with this one. Would've been better off as a normal episode length. I will say the Prodigious does seem like it is supposed to be different from the Miraculous. First the fact that the magical creatures can only be seen by the wearer and not everyone. And also because she can use the transformation powers multiple times instead of just once.
It was definitely disappointing and the way they took Cat Noir out was also very badly done. They obviously took him out for the sake of giving the fight to the girls. It’s very sloppy and lazy.
I honestly hope that the next special focuses more on Chat Noir, because this is really closed to being "Miraculous LADYBUG (with occasional appearances of that other guy)" Like, give him SOMETHING. I know the show focuses mainly on Girl Power, but this is just narrative abuse now. Idea- Maybe go to Africa, where Cat Noir gains some deeper understanding of how his cataclysm works, while Adrien has to keep his father from finding out he's Chat Noir. Maybe even learns a new subset of powers, like temperature control or a Reverse Cataclysm that undoes his own powers? Idk, just spitballing.
Finding a person in China is, rather than finding a needle in a haystack, more like finding a specific needle in a stack of needles. Edit: Especially because cannonically Marinette is asian herself and would blend in with the locals from afar.
1. The reason she was on the news was because she was missing. 2. The reason she was hurt by fye’s betrayal was because she finally found someone that could understand what she was saying that she was so happy and finding out that she was betrayed hurt her by making her loose hope. 3. The reason she was able to turn into a dragon was because she was only thinking about saving Marinettie which is seen as a noble action
i found it such a step backwards in regards to Marinette's character that she went to Shanghai just to see Adrien like they could have done anything else like have her go to Shang hi independently actually for her uncles birthday and find out Adrien is there when she arrives (they could even have a moment where she calls Alya and says "omg Alya what are the chance he would be here" freaking out) still lazy writing but at least not creepy, they also could have has them both going to a gala type thing because her uncle is a celebrity chef, just so many better and less creepy story lines they could have followed
2:22. Why didn't Fei go to the police and tell them that this shady guy has information about the incident and let them make the guy talk? I was not very happy with this movie because the premise of why Marinette is there is the worst (stalking Adrien literally across the world, tricking her parents into enabling her, and ditching her great uncle and opportunity to actually learn about her heritage)...Just the worst!! Also, it really annoyed me when they had Fei (in the English dub) say that she learned "English" because it was such a beautiful language...Ugh! It's supposed to be "French is a beautiful language"! But now the English-speaking kids who watch this show are gonna think that people think that English is a pretty language, just because the writers didn't want to have to explain that this is originally a French tv show. Even though it makes so much more sense that barely anyone in Shanghai would speak French (at least some people would speak some basic English in touristy areas)
Okay. I see a lot of people upset about Marinette lying to her family about wanting to go to China. And I completely agree with that. I mean come on! The team couldn’t have written it any different?! What about her actually wanting to go visit her uncle and learn about her family’s traditions on her mom side? As someone of mixed race it really really disturbs me. It be like me traveling to India to stalk a celebrity crush while lying and saying that I’m visiting a relative- oh wait that’s exactly what happened. 😒 Miraculous team needs to do better.
Marrinet wasn't on the news because they thought she was a criminal. She was on the news bc her uncle reported her missing, so she is a missing forienor. (Still goes super fast, but at least not quite as ridiculous) Also, yes, Marrinet is waaaay too trusting. I kept thinking "she's gonna go legit missing if she keeps just trusting everyone"
Marinette has a weird relationship with her own culture in this movie. By weird I mean it's almost non-existent? Idk, I feel like, as a mixed person, I take both sides of my identity with lots of love and learn as much as I can.
I feel like the team are a bit of cowards for not giving Mari and Adrien a break from each other. This special could have been about Mari learning to be a new Guardian. Cause master Fu kind of shoved the responsibility on to her without training her. Hense she goes to china. And because two are distancing themselves for each other, Adrien just HAPPENS to be in china as well.
you see the problem is that more than half of the run time of the show is marinette being into/creeping one/straight up stalking/ talking/ dreaming about adrien (or at least it feels like it) the plot could be interesting but the show is dead set to make us partecipate into marinette obsession over adrien

I think an easy way to fix the creepiness of Marinette is have Adrien invite her along. Like, maybe have Mr. Agrest say that Adrien can take one friend and Adrien at first asks Nino but he can't come for whatever reason but Nino recommends Marinette because hey, she has an uncle there. Everything else can play out as it was.
2:41 Sorry for the knit picking but when Marinette is on the news it was because she was missing from her uncle's restaurant for hours. In the movie he said he would report her absence to the authorities.
5:05 I literally had to pause the video and whisper to myself *"its a zodiac"* cus that's so go damn cool Also: that little blue lion kwami is *so cute*
Bruh this special pissed me off SO MUCH Mari's uncle learned French JUST to speak with her and she didn't pay him any attention! All she cared about was Adrien!! Adrien, if there ever comes a day where you find out just how CREEPY OBSESSED this girl is for you, I hope you run the other way!!
Marinette wasn’t shown on tv as a criminal, she was broadcasted as the French tourist that has gone missing. Still weird that she got on news that fast XD
What made me turn away from being a fan of the show is the fact her parents worked hard so she could take this trip and learn about her heritage, instead she uses it as an advantage to stalk her crush. The morals within this show are so warped that I don’t know how kids can learn anything from it. She treats Adrien as a prized possession
Perfect timing to release this review 🙌 I've watched Miraculous Shanghai two days ago and was so disappointed (even if my expectations weren't high to begin with). The only note worthy moment was when Hawkmoth's acumatized protector turned against him 😂
I watched this and was just like, "is this supposed to be a higher budget episode?" "and look there goes mari being a creep again" hawk moth getting obliterated made it 5% better
What would have been interesting was if Marinette was "killed" by the Guardian in a self sacrifice kind of thing and then Fei uses both the Prodigious and the earrings to fight off the akuma.
I saw that you uploaded this, stopped what I was doing, watched the special, watched your video and this movie just felt....meh to me too. A lot of Fei's character was rushed and the whole thing with her father was strange. They implied he disappeared, but it's highly implied that he died I think?? I don't know?? I don't have much faith that anything that happened in the movie will carry over in the show. A lot of the later episodes in the series are like this to me. One question I do have is how the heck was hawk moth was able to akumatize the diety?
I've only watched the first three seasons, so maybe my take is outdated and things got better. However, with that said, Miraculous Ladybug feels like a show that has interesting ideas but executes them in the worst possible way almost every time.
I agree with everything you said but in my opinion the Shanghai special was prettier than the new York one. But maybe I'm just remembering wrong I just like the dark shiny anesthetic of the Shanghai special
Miraculous Ladybug really said that instead of just allowing Marinette to go to Shanghai cause she wants to see her uncle and learn about her heritage....cause despite her mom being proudly chinese, she according to this show, has never taught Marinette much about her chinese heritage....that they needed to reinforce the love square somehow via....stalking, cause that's a good idea apparently.
My god, the writers gotta stop turning Marinette into a huge stalker and play it off as "love"... WHYY do they think this is a good premise for a kid's show protagonist, especially since her creepy tendencies only intensify ???
I really enjoyed the special, I truly did. The only thing wrong was that Marinette literally went to Shanghai to stalk Adrien. I would’ve been completely fine if she just went to learn more about her roots, elated even! We know nothing about her Chinese heritage and I was hoping to get like miraculous master of an ancestor or something.
The movie was good/stupid. And couldn't Longg just block her water attack instead of just standing there like a idiot?! ▪︎Here's something Longg could've done to: 1: Block her water attack. 2: Punch her. (I don't care if this is a kids show) 3: Mash the vase and decay Ladybug. There you go!!?
I've been a sub of yours for about 2 months or so and I must say, you deserve a lot more subs my friend. Hope this video is also a banger like the others!
Plus they live in Paris and Paris is very expensive
@@sweetchoerrylove1408 Fr that was one of my main issues with this special. The hypocrisy in Marinette really jumped out
@@sweetchoerrylove1408 exactly! she's a massive hypocrite and no one calls it out

I agree with you. It felt more like a regular episode with longer time. They just named it special only because it takes place in a different country.
Eh, I feel like that with the original movie. Anything where they don't defeat the villain in 20 minutes can feel too long. I thought the second movie was great though. They're focusing more on the characters and less on action.
And that Hawkmoth wants to take a miraculous from another box/country for himself 💀
Yeah that sounds about right
the shanghai special was just one of those things which was meant to be entertaining and educational for the kids and not the adults who watch it in hopes of intense dramatic sequences No one is really sure why they turned this into a movie special since it felt more like an episode focusing on serious character development, but since the company is the one which decides how the episodes are aired, its likely they wanted to take advantage of the special taking place in another country in order to attract attention from shanghai as part of their "Miraculous world".

@ǞЯƮΦЯiǞ РęПDЯǞgΦП I'd say she's a mix of 65% Sakura and 35% Hinata
i always thought it was creepy. your uncle who loves you and has shown he wants to get closer to you is thrown to the wayside by a boy who would never accept your advances
Marinette is a psycho
It's unnerving.
cause it's not like they already live in the same country, and attend the same school. Nope, travel to China....😐

Considering all the other contrivedness of the show, this wouldn't even be too out there.

It was fine in season 1, but then they kept milking it worse through out season 2 to 4

@@anez1266 I can’t even watch that part
My biggest problem with this movie is the fact that Marinette manipulates 14 years worth of savings out of her parents, claiming she wants to spend time with her uncle, but is really just going so she can stalk Adrien and ditch her uncle. Thing is, they could have fixed this by having her parents already have planned to go to Shanghai, and Marinette finds out while she's there that Adrien is also there, and then let everything else play out the way it did.
Exactly!
It would've been a perfect idea for her to go see her uncle
not reallly important but i love when the people/things hawkmoth akumatizes turn on him or get out of control, his face whenever it happens just sends me, like when he akumatized a baby and couldn't control it (which happened twice, you'd think he'd learn lmao) or when he akumatized a robot that turned on him and almost killed him, i was laughing so hard
Remember when he was like "You hit me!"

Still a dumb moral though

My conclusion from these videos is that people like miraculous for what it could be over what it actually is. The possibilities the series sets up really starts one's imagination going, but the show itself could be better.
You're so right... I want to like this show so much, but for me it's been unwatchable since season 2
The fancomics are great, and really what kept me going, they also do a much better job at consistent characterisation without making Adrien boring and Marinette creepy.
It's kinda like sao.
“One conversation fixes everything” is actually what a lot of people WISH solved a certain plot. “Everything would be alright if they just TALKED.”
I did like this episode at first and the new character, until Marinette decided stalking adrien all the way to china. It was overall ok, I would love a spin off of the new character with the prodigious and chinese lion miraculous.

2:10 Straight up reminded me of that gag in the Scott Pilgrim movie where Scott just draws a blob to represent Ramona Flowers and everyone somehow understands he's looking for her ahahah
Marinette is becoming more and more creepier with her stalking as the story progresses.
Marinette could have explored her roots, but they centered it around her being obsessed with Adrien
i commented online how Marinette is a stalker and needs to know that she can breathe without a boyfriend and how alya pushes Marinette to talk to Adrien even when marinette made it clear she moved on (new york special ) and a girl aged 12 responded with "Its ok to stalk someone if you love them " and i'm terrified to this day on how powerful and terrifying Marinette's influence

5:42 hell even the Dragon Kwami is named Longg (cuz hes a Chinese dragon)
but in their defense, they did name all the Renlings based on all their animals but like twice (the dragon is Long Long, Xiong Xiong is the bear, etc.)
The Prodigious is a prototype of the Miraculous.

"So what's the Asian girl's hair going to be like?"
"She's Asian, of course she has to have a lock of colored hair"
As someone who wishes to connect more to their heritage and traditions, the fact that Marinette lied to her parents about wanting to learn about her chinese roots really hurts my heart. I WISH I had the money to travel and see my family or learn nahuatl.
and no, I don't care this takes place between whatever season of mlb, Marinette's behaviour is outright CREEPY; it was creepy in s2 and s3 and its still creepy now, it's not funny and it gets even worse more episodes pass.
His name isn't even in the theme song.
"I'm so disappointed."
You're not the only one.
I kept having to stop watching it and then go back to it after awhile because it was so boring.
Really? I liked this way more than the first.
@@sirmel11 To me, it was horrible. From the concept to execution, it was worse than bad.
It was bit stupid cause ladybug somehow figure things out to quickly.
it’s so disgusting that a white man wrote about an asian girl pretending to explore her heritage just to visit her white boy crush… like just have her learn more about her culture and heritage ?!?! it’s just so disrespectful
It's kinda disgusting that you are pointing out the author's race because of the problem. Legit the writing just wasn't good don't bring race into this
It so badly set up when there was a much better option right in front of him. Why not just already have her there and then she runs into Adrien?
@Beebee ok but that made me laugh a little too hard
The literal fact when she was doing her little speech to the person that burned down her father school the fact that lady buddy can or we doing your awesome superhero poses which was fantastic
During this special I felt that there were obvious retcons. Like doesn't Tikki disappear when Marinette takes off the miraculous? And if Tikki can go through objects, why didn't she do that sooner when she was separated from Marinette? And I thought negative feelings get you akumatized? The guardian was pretty calm from my understanding yet he was akumatized. He didn't have negative feelings unlike the greedy guy.
In Powerpuff girls (the original) they had them hit people and monsters. And that was aimed at kids. NO EXCUSE!
I honestly hope that the next special focuses more on Chat Noir, because this is really closed to being "Miraculous LADYBUG (with occasional appearances of that other guy)"
Like, give him SOMETHING.
@@matthewwilliams8267 It would be amazing but that never is going to happen. Have you ever seen Thomas Astruc's tweets? It's disappointing.
Man, I really didn't expect to spend an hour watching young Bon Jovi talking about a french kid's show, but now I can't help but want more
Finding a person in China is, rather than finding a needle in a haystack, more like finding a specific needle in a stack of needles. Edit: Especially because cannonically Marinette is asian herself and would blend in with the locals from afar.
I actually liked Shanghai special more than New York because it was more action packed as opposed to Adrienette Cringe fest the latter was.
All the props to NEW YORK special for the representation tho!
Yes I agree!! I prefer the Shanghai special because we can focus on someone else than forced Adrienette
The Prodigious is to the Miraculous as
the Care Bear Cousins are to the bears
That’s the best analogy I can come up with
Miraculous team needs to do better.
Marrinet wasn't on the news because they thought she was a criminal. She was on the news bc her uncle reported her missing, so she is a missing forienor. (Still goes super fast, but at least not quite as ridiculous)
Also, yes, Marrinet is waaaay too trusting. I kept thinking "she's gonna go legit missing if she keeps just trusting everyone"
As in the words of Deadpool
"That's just lazy writing"
Marinette has a weird relationship with her own culture in this movie. By weird I mean it's almost non-existent? Idk, I feel like, as a mixed person, I take both sides of my identity with lots of love and learn as much as I can.
I feel like the team are a bit of cowards for not giving Mari and Adrien a break from each other.
This special could have been about Mari learning to be a new Guardian. Cause master Fu kind of shoved the responsibility on to her without training her.
Hense she goes to china.
And because two are distancing themselves for each other, Adrien just HAPPENS to be in china as well.
you see the problem is that more than half of the run time of the show is marinette being into/creeping one/straight up stalking/ talking/ dreaming about adrien (or at least it feels like it)
the plot could be interesting
but the show is dead set to make us partecipate into marinette obsession over adrien
@@lagtduckgirl7993 Yeah...
It had me awkwardly laughing at first. but it became even BEYOND the "likable Yandere" character stereo types, just because it's SO clear thatthe writers see it as "cute and quirky" and that is just became SO MANY levels of WRONG.
The tipping point for me.(and probably alot of people was the scene in puppeteer 2) like How did the Team watch this... and think this was ANY WAY OKAY??
@@UsonoHoushi my big NOPE moment where i was like "god why" was also that plus the part where she SNIFFS HIS PILLOW
(Plus i got a hint at the super old scene where she sighs over watching his face in the PERFUME ADD!!!)
but seriously i can't remember a single show where the went THIS FAR
This shit is NOT OKAY
And the show is subpart at best
The Power rangers handles the same plot better
@@lagtduckgirl7993 The pillow thing? it happens to a lot of anime.
the difference is the SHOW awknoledges that its CREEPY. with showing how other characters react. like this->😨😰😳😒😥😱
That's why some Yandere are "likable" cause the show awknoledges that what their doing is weird and is done for laughs or dark humor.
But is Miraculous? They think is funny and charming... and my is similar to what's above.
basically WE became the side characters who are AWARE it's creepy. and there are NO audiences to think this is joke or dark humor.
@@lagtduckgirl7993 Oh no. correction, the sniffing of the pillow can also be done in like sad scenes where the loved ones are far apart or the person passed away.
It's all about how the tone is set. with the lighting, context, and music.
Hell... Hey ARNOLD! Did the likable Yandere/Tsundere combo right with Helga. Sure she is creepy but, again the show awknoledges that what she's doing is weird. She herself knows it's not normal, cause even her friends don't know about the altar and the pendant.
Hense we laugh at it.
2:41
Sorry for the knit picking but when Marinette is on the news it was because she was missing from her uncle's restaurant for hours. In the movie he said he would report her absence to the authorities.
5:05
I literally had to pause the video and whisper to myself *"its a zodiac"* cus that's so go damn cool
Also: that little blue lion kwami is *so cute*
Bruh this special pissed me off SO MUCH
Mari's uncle learned French JUST to speak with her and she didn't pay him any attention!
The only note worthy moment was when Hawkmoth's acumatized protector turned against him 😂
the fact that theres literally already a dragon kwami named long in miraculous- 💀
1:22 aw man. You didn't include the adorable part with her dad running up before running down. It was pretty well animated
As disappointing this special was, Fei was voiced by one of my favourite voice actresses
I watched this and was just like, "is this supposed to be a higher budget episode?"
"and look there goes mari being a creep again"
hawk moth getting obliterated made it 5% better
What would have been interesting was if Marinette was "killed" by the Guardian in a self sacrifice kind of thing and then Fei uses both the Prodigious and the earrings to fight off the akuma.
10:07 For what I know, the prodigious is suposed to be a prototipe of the miraculous
However, with that said, Miraculous Ladybug feels like a show that has interesting ideas but executes them in the worst possible way almost every time.
out of context: can we talk about those fingernails!? they look great!!! you're rocking the white!!!
I agree with everything you said but in my opinion the Shanghai special was prettier than the new York one. But maybe I'm just remembering wrong I just like the dark shiny anesthetic of the Shanghai special
Why did hawkmoth even want the miraculous when he wouldn't be able to use it since he is definitely not worthy 😅😂
2:43 she’s not a criminal, her uncle called and told the police she was missing. I’d assume he sent them a photo of her too
I really enjoyed the special, I truly did. The only thing wrong was that Marinette literally went to Shanghai to stalk Adrien. I would’ve been completely fine if she just went to learn more about her roots, elated even! We know nothing about her Chinese heritage and I was hoping to get like miraculous master of an ancestor or something.
Well I hope we get a review of all the intense stuff we got in s4, which my opinion had the better finale that s3, but really close to s2
The movie was good/stupid.
And couldn't Longg just block her water attack instead of just standing there like a idiot?!
▪︎Here's something Longg could've done to:
1: Block her water attack.
2: Punch her. (I don't care if this is a kids show)
3: Mash the vase and decay Ladybug.
There you go!!?
Converted to Euros, he basically asked for 13,900 Euros which is probably way more than a 14 year old has on hand
1:46 It must be one of those dolls made out of flesh. I love those.
I've been a sub of yours for about 2 months or so and I must say, you deserve a lot more subs my friend. Hope this video is also a banger like the others!
