    Fascinating analysis, as always. While I was aware of the different variations in the story across western Europe, I had no idea the story of Cinderella has versions in lands as far away as China.

    Fairytales have deep roots in the past, and the differences that are found in the telling of these stories over time often show what attributes and morals a particular culture or country wanted to emphasize in their version of the story. When I studied French in middle school my teacher would read French fairytales to us every week, and I quickly learned that these well known stories were quite different in some ways than the versions that the Grimm brothers had collected and published. Please do more with the fairytale/folktale theme. Thank you for your fascinating videos. They never fail to widen my horizons and give me new perspectives to ponder.

    Even talents don't always guarantee success without some help from others. Graciousness is of more importance than beauty. Have courage and be kind. A dream is a wish your heart makes. It's what's inside that counts. Aim to please. Impossible things happen everyday we build impossible hopes up.

    Wow! I agree, this is definitely a very fascinating and thorough coverage. I thought I read all variations of the Cinderella story, but you mentioned couple that I never knew about, including the Chinese version. Very interesting! Now I have to find and read them too. 😊🤗📚

    In my childhood I had a book of stories from around the world and there were two versions of Cinderella in it. In one of them Cinderella takes pity over a dead hose/ bull skull and buries it and from this act of kindness an oak tree grows out and grands her wishes. In other the stepmother allows Cinderella to go to the ball as long as she completes all the chores. Cinderella completes all of them, so the stepmother mixes three types of seeds together (poppy, and two others I don't remember). She needs to sort them apart by the sundown. When stepmother with daughters go out birds help Cinderella. There were three nights of the ball, so same task, just more difficult / bigger each time.

    This is an awesome video!! You choose the best stories/books to make videos off of! Cinderella has always been my favorite fairytale, even though a lot of people don’t like it, or say there are a lot of holes in the plot. My favorite Cinderella version EVER though, is Ella Enchanted. It’s so smoothly done, that I didn’t even realize it was a Cinderella adaption until the end of the book! And it completely fills plot holes like, why Cinderella would marry the prince after supposedly barely knowing him, why she stayed with her step-family, and why the glass slippers only fit her. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. Don’t watch the movie though, cause it’s not even close to the books. There are main characters in the movie, that don’t even exist in the book. 😭😭

    So in Ashfool, the German Version of Cinderella, the Ugly Stepsisters get their punishments when they try on the Golden Slipper, only for it to cut and bruise their feet, toes, and heals, causing them to bleed and limp very badly, while the Wicked Stepmother gets her punishment when the birds peck at her eyes, leaving her blind, right? At least those are what I've seen and heard.

      In the Grimms' version the stepmother tells them to cut off parts of their feet! But the prince notices the blood

    This is wonderful video! Thank you for bringing out all thes different versions of cinderella. Love all your research. I am familiar with many of these because back in 5th grade my teacher handed out books with different versions of cinderella and we wrote papers on how they fit in with different in with the cultures they came from. I got the Rough-Face Girl ( as told by Rafe Martin) an Algonquin(native american) where there is an powerful invisible being in the village who will only marry someone is good hearted enough to see what he looks like. There is girl who is disfigured from tending the fires and is treated badly by her two beautiful but spoiled sisters. She uses her own resourcefulness to get clothes and moccasins though. I would recommend reading it even though it is a kids book. I find the different versions of the same rags to riches story really fascinating though good point that unfortunately in history that it was often only by marrige that women inprove their standing.

    the story of 叶限 is over 1k year ago. Crazy to think about. And it was written down. Still popular to this day as In my opinion it is literally the uncensored version of our Cinderella story. Chinese literature is fascinating

    I love your videos! I discovered them when I was looking for more information about Anne with an E! I knew about the Chinese story, but not about the Egypt one. I studied a bit of fairy tales in college, it's really interesting how the story changes and evolves throughout centuries and in different cultures.

    Great little video. Good research on the very early stories.. La Cenerentola by Rossini opera in two acts was the latest Cinderella story I watched on youtube. I liked the Disney cartoon & the Movie. Saw many versions growing up. Some of the illustrations you showed reminded me of my favourite version in a book of fairy tales, lost many decades ago. Thank you.

    A bit of trivia about Perrault's version. The slippers were fur, but due to linguistic evolution, it was mistranslated later on to being glass.

    • @livrowland171
      @livrowland171 7 місяців тому +1

      This is sometimes claimed, because vair -- à kind of squirrel.fur -- sounds like verre - glass -- but as far as I know most experts think it was glass all along.

    Easter Europe ,like Russia also had Cinderella story ,call Zolushka ,and even northern variety when its became a fur boots...As usual, the end is Happily ever after... Each of them had their own details ,that depict little different characters of Cinderella ,which usually differ by relation with her father and punishment for step -family.That all can conclude the differences.
