Things used to be a lot... more gruesome... for our dear cindery princess. Join me on this animated dive into the origins of Disney's Cinderella! Well, her past variants. I look at how close Disney's version is to it's French "inspiration," and how much darker this tale got in the hands of the Brothers Grimm. If you thought the evil stepfamily was bad in Walt Disney's animation, oh my friend have I got a tale for you! (It's this one, right here!). Not only is the evil stepmother cruel to Cinderella (or, Cinderbum!), but she is also desperate and willing enough to have her own daughters suffer truly gruesome fates. As always, I hope you like this dark and creepy animated origin adventure! Stay Spooky!

My mom telling me this story when I was little: "So the sisters cut their feet in order to try the shoe, but don't worry, the birds told the prince that Cinderella is the one he's looking for. Oh, and also the birds eat the eyes of the stepmother and her daughters. The end."
Side note: I grew up with Andersen's and Grimm's stories, that's why it was so strange for me when I finally got to watch the Disney versions and every story was so different.

@TheWolfboy180 my mum got me a collection of Disney books when I was 2 or 3 (I was starting to read on my own). But my dad, being irresponsible with age ratings, let me watch cartoons of the original tales, as well as my aunt telling me the stories. I also grew up watching Into the Woods five times a day. Don’t get me wrong, I love Disney a lot, but I grew up in both and like the originals more.

Fun fact ! Perrault’s tale being translated from French, there was a little change to the Disney version ! Her shoes are made of Vair (squirrel fur) in the original tale. But the word glass in French is « Verre » (I’m French myself) which is pronounced in the same way. So is it a translation mistake or just a change ? Idk

that's so cool! thanks for the fun fact. :D
      My take on it: both?
Since it is so similar and I can see if someone just said the word aloud, and didn't read it for themselves a translator most likely would hear glass rather than fur.
But I can also see how Disney would...well, refuse to animate...squirrel fur being turned to shoes, it was for kids after all, then again, disney wasn't always kids friendly haha.

In the movie "Ever After" (1998) my favorite line comes at the end. Without spoiling why, Cinderella comes to the defense of her step mother and sisters to save their lives, but says "May they receive the same kindness that they showed me" and their faces showed they understood their fate. They were shipped off to the new world to live as indentured servants for the rest of their days. Provided with food and shelter, but made to work. Treated exactly as they treated Cinderella.

One thing I can see as another connection to Perrault's version of the story, in the Cinderella Sequel Films Cinderella end's up forming a strong bond with her stepsister Anastasia. Cinderella II shows Lady Trimane out in the marketplace with her daughters and stopping by a Bakery the smells of freshly baked bread and sweets causes Anastasia to linger and ebcome smitten with the Baker. After he and his shop are dismissed by Trimane and Drizzella Anastasia is found later by Cinderella and the two bond together, a confused Anastasia wondering why cinderella was helping her after everything they did, and Cinderella SOMEHOW claims she bares them no ill will over what they were conditioned to do by their mother.
Cinderella III has Lady Trimane get the Fairy Godmother's Wand and then reverse time, undoing everything. Cinderella's slipper fitting Anastasia and them leaving Cinderella alone in the house. As Drizzella and Trimane keep pushing Anastasia to marry the Prince, she forms strong bonds with the King and the Prince, and over time starts to feel guilty for stealing all of this from Cinderella. And eventually sides with Cinderella against her Mother and Sister to set things right.

There is this Czech movie version of Cinderella, I think in English it's called "3 hazelnuts for Cinderella", in it a few elements of Grimm and Perrault's version is included, some of it like the doves helping her pick lintels and ash, and other elements like "the first thing that falls on his nose", you can find it on youtube I think, not sure if you can find it with English subtitles.
And it definitely does prove that "Into the woods" got not just Cinderella, but Rapunzel and other stories almost to a tee!

I always liked Grimm’s version better because the visual of Cinderella and the Prince having their wedding while birds (I believe the version I read had crows, probably because crows seem scarrier than pigeons) pecked and tore out the stepsister’s eyes made for a very amusing bit of irony. They were both beautiful and vain, but now they are mutilated and blind so they cannot look upon their own disfigured faces. Also, a slipper made of gold just seemed to make more sense than a slipper made of glass, since gold can be made into threads and fabrics, and I can’t imagine glass would be very comfortable.

I remember reading a version where there was no "cut off your toe", but instead the stepmother jams her daughter's foot into the slipper with so much force that the poor girl's toes are actually *crushed* to the point of bleeding. I'm honestly not sure which one is worse.

I don't think I'll ever get over how much I love your animation style. This year I'm doing a sort of Studio Ghibli inspired animation for one of my classes with watercolour paintings as the background and a 2d animated character on top. Usually I put way too much detail and shading into my animation so this time I wanna do cartooney characters so its quicker lol
    p.s love your videos

Leading back to the Brother’s Grimms storyline, “Ashenputtle”, the German word for Cinderella was very gruesome. Including the father leaving her, whom is still alive, and at the end, the mother makes both sisters cut their toes off to fit the shoes, but it doesn’t work, due to a crow noticing that the shoe is bleeding, then Cinderella and the prince is brought together while the sister and mothers eyes are pecked out by crows.
I know that there other countries have their own version but the German version stuck out to me the most.

You know, the wedding part is actually even "funnier" because when they go into the church they go Sister1 Cinderella Sister2 and the birds pick out the eyes closest. When they go out of the church (wonder if the just sat through the whole wedding with freshly picked out eyes? Jup!) They got Sister2 Cinderella Sister1 and the birds come and again pick out the eyes closest, so in the end both sisters loose both eyes, while (as far as the story tells) being absolutely nonchalant about it.
This... I don't know if badass is the correct description here but it is at least something xD

There is a movie that is similar to the old (Grimm) Cinderella tale, but instead of being 1 story there is a couple of more fairytale stories stashed in there aswell (some of them has some Grimm plots aswell)
It's called 'Into the woods' (it's apparently made by Disney, I don't remember well bc it's been a while since I've seen the movie, but nonetheless I recommend it)

My country has a familiar tale which is kinda dark and long called Tam Cam and it goes like this:
There’s a girl called Tam who is very kind, lives with her mother and father. It was a very simple life until her mom died. After that, her father marries again.
Tam’s stepmother has a daughter named Cam. After a couple of years, Tam’s father died and her stepmother and Cam started to abuse her just like in Cinderella. Couple of years later, the stepmother told the two sisters to go search for small shrimps. Tam caught a lot of them while Cam slept. After realizing that she didn’t caught any, Cam decided to trick Tam. She told Tam that her hair was dirty and she should go wash her hair in the lake nearby. Tam decided to do that and Cam took all of her small shrimps.Tam quickly realized that her small shrimps were gone and she cried. A Bụt suddenly appeared and asked why she was crying. She explained everything and Bụt told her to look closely. There’s a big fish in there and Bụt told her to take care of it. But not long after, her stepmother and Cam knew about the fish and made it for lunch. Tam cried again and Bụt appeared asking why she was crying she explained everything and Bụt
told her to bury her fish’s bones into some jars for future use. After more years, the prince needed a wife. Tam wanted to go to the ball but her stepmother forced her to solve the mixed suger and salt, if she completed the task, she can go and then they left. Once again, Tam cried and Bụt appeared. Bụt told her to take out the jars and it changed into her dress to go to the ball. She thanked him and went to the ball. The prince saw her, quickly fall in love with her and married her. Couple of years later, Tam had to go home and stay there for 4 days. One day,Tam had to climb up a tree to get some fruit. Out of jealousy and the obsession of her real daughter to be the prince’s wife, her stepmother grabbed an axe and chopped the tree Tam was climbing on and Tam died. The prince was devastated and Cam became the prince’s wife. Tam was reincarnated by Bụt into a bird. The prince discovered the bird and really liked it. Cam was jealous of the bird and decided to kill it. The prince was sad and something something Tam was alive again as a human, and the prince and she lived happily ever after. Oh and the stepmother received a “gift” from a crow which was sauce (mắm) and some meat. She was halfway eating the meal when the crow said it’s your daughter over and over again. The stepmother realized that she was eating her own daughter and committed suicide. THE END WOW what a great story.
