His raw love of what he does? Sets him apart in my book… he just has an energy, that’s totally devoted to his craft… that, for me? Is what makes him the best, in my humble opinion. He breathes it… it’s in every fiber of his body, and yet? He just plays… and plays and plays. BUT… having said that? I met Keef's gardener in Shaw Park, Jamaca, some years ago. A lovely gentle giant of a man who explained some botanical stuff to my wife. He was wearing an old "Keith Richards and the Expensive Winos" cap. It was dark red and very well used - but I just had to offer to buy it. I offered 'a lot' but full respect -- he said, " Sir, Mr Keith gave this hat to me; I could never sell it no matter the dollars offered." I've never forgotten him and just hope Keith still employs him: he is a loyal, respectful, knowledgeable, true gentleman🧢 - just like Mr. Keith 🎸

Keith I have Main Offender and when I first got it, I played it over and over and over. So I am an original fan of the Stones from 1965 But I am also a Xpensive 🍷 Wineos fan. Keith who is a genius pulled these incredible musicians together. Bless them, now Steve Jordan, Bobby Keyes and 🥰 Keith himself are in 2 bands.
IMO a band doesn't have to have robotic musicians to be tight setting improv aside to sound tight, it doesn't work that way. You have to be loose to be tight otherwise you're not tight you are stiff and the sound will reflect it If you want to play tight, you can't get there unless you are loose. I think only very few musicians understand that concept "play loose to be tight". So glad Keef brought that point up.
What a wonderful interview. Thoughtful, well-researched questions by David brought out the best in Keith. Loved the story about Eileen and the string of phone calls. And to hear Keith talk about playing bass was cool. A joy to watch.

Best interview of Keith I've seen/heard. Gosh, now he's talking Jamaica. I've got serious brain injury. Keith was flown to the same hospital as I was, but ,I has a missionary from the world's last colonial private prison island, and Keith had mates with cash. So, 7 years later, God it's good to see how well someone can be when they are looked after and loved, instead of hated by a missionary jailor man who has a medal from the Queen, who asked Keith to sing for her, TWICE!!!
Mkay, there's way too many ppl reciting his quote about solos not being as "important" or "memorable" as a riff for me to reply to, but I guess none of you homies have never heard "Eruption" before lmao. I love Keef. He's not the technical-best guitarist you'll find, obvi, but he's got a signature touch to guitar that makes him as immediately-identifiable as Albert King, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, John Fogerty, Brian May, EVH, or Randy Rhoads & he is one of the greatest guitar icons because of that &, obvi, the many great songs he's composed. I'd also venture as far as to say I think Keef is a better songwriter than all those other guitarists (with the exception of Hendrix), even though I like most of those guys as strictly guitarists much more than Keef, in case anyone thinks I'm trolling or whatever.

Seen Ronnie, Mick Taylor,( twice) and Keith solo shows.. It was a fantastic show. Great insightful interview . You guys riffed and found the groove. And Keith is always just... Keith I have Main Offender and when I first got it, I played it over and over and over. So I am an original fan of the Stones from 1965 But I am also a Xpensive 🍷 Wineos fan. Keith who is a genius pulled these incredible musicians together. Bless them, now Steve Jordan, Bobby Keyes and 🥰 Keith himself are in 2 bands.

IMO a band doesn't have to have robotic musicians to be tight setting improv aside to sound tight, it doesn't work that way.
You have to be loose to be tight otherwise you're not tight you are stiff and the sound will reflect it
If you want to play tight, you can't get there unless you are loose.
I think only very few musicians understand that concept "play loose to be tight". So glad Keef brought that point up.

Best interview of Keith I've seen/heard. Gosh, now he's talking Jamaica. I've got serious brain injury. Keith was flown to the same hospital as I was, but ,I has a missionary from the world's last colonial private prison island, and Keith had mates with cash. So, 7 years later, God it's good to see how well someone can be when they are looked after and loved, instead of hated by a missionary jailor man who has a medal from the Queen, who asked Keith to sing for her, TWICE!!!

Mkay, there's way too many ppl reciting his quote about solos not being as "important" or "memorable" as a riff for me to reply to, but I guess none of you homies have never heard "Eruption" before lmao. I love Keef. He's not the technical-best guitarist you'll find, obvi, but he's got a signature touch to guitar that makes him as immediately-identifiable as Albert King, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, John Fogerty, Brian May, EVH, or Randy Rhoads & he is one of the greatest guitar icons because of that &, obvi, the many great songs he's composed.
I'd also venture as far as to say I think Keef is a better songwriter than all those other guitarists (with the exception of Hendrix), even though I like most of those guys as strictly guitarists much more than Keef, in case anyone thinks I'm trolling or whatever.
Keith has become one of the guys he grew up worshipping -- Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters. He's become one of his heroes.

@@electricbreeze I made a mistake. I just looked it up and the performance I was thinking of was indeed from 1993, when the band was playing “How I Wish” (from Talk is Cheap) on the tour to support Main Offender. Sorry to get your hopes up for nothing but the band was on fire anyway 😬
