HOLY MOLY!! Maya, I've just been binge watching your videos as research for starting my own channel and I cannot begin to tell you how helpful you've been! Thank you so so much!
good questions! i have to focus on a toy i have on a stick! then i stand where it was. OR i put the camera in photo mode and use a remote control to focus, mark where i was standing, then change the setting to video and go back! when i first started it was a pain but now i do it so fast :)
:) my biggest challenge is finding a way to share information so it's properly understood. these types of videos are the hardest for me but it's worth it :)
it depends on what you're going for. the good thing is it's all digital now so just take a shot and make whatever adjustments...if it doesn't work out you can change it up :)
I hope you have more of these How-To videos when it comes to video/photography set ups (NO PRESSURE LOL). I can absolutely use google and film/photo blogs/vlogs to further my education in them, which I already have. But seeing it up close and seeing how well you described everything without the language being too technical or advanced to us novices is refreshing and I retain much more info. Thank you for this simple and brilliant video, Mama Shameless.
I want to start making videos but had no idea where to start now I learned about light. Every video of yours that I watch gives me more guts lol. I appreciate your informative videos.. I think the hardest part about how to videos is giving the details because you already kno everything so you have to go back to square one to explain it to someone else. Thanks for taking the time to guide us :)
it all depends on your budget. i use all 3 lights it just depends on the look i want. you don't need flawless skin though. actually a lot of gurus here do not have flawless skin and just use really strong light to make it look "flawless".
I love you girl. First of all because you are so comfortable being you. Second you respond to comments - I don't know how you find the time but you do. Third because you share things like this with us. Some vloggers will not share this type of info. I just imagine you as a bff. Stay sweet and always do you. I wish you much success.
im a photographer (3 years in) I get caught up in strobe photography alot and I forget that natural lighting is the best lighting. Thank you for sharing this with me.
Maya I love that you are such a giving person to share all your knowledge! I also love that you can draw, do phot editing and photography. So talented. I really enjoy watching your videos and your fun, positive spirit.
Awesome tutorial Maya! Love you so sooo much. Your natural inner Light always shines bright through in all of your videos. Im so glad you decided to start your Shameless journey because we would all have missed out on something really big. Keep shining darling. You inspire us all to do the same :)
Hi Shameless Maya I'm considering the ring light but read reviews that said it's extremely bright. Did you use a filter gel/ gel filter (idk) over it? Was it as blinding as they say I film pretty close so the camera is usually 2-3 feet away. If so what gel do you recommend I know nothing about them. Thanks love.
OMG Maya this is hands down my favorite vid you have made! It was so informative and educational. Thanks so much because its always nice to learn from a pro!!!
thanks and your welcome :) to be honest, i did this cause i'm tired of seeing awful looking videos here on YT :S i want everyone here to up their game :)
Easy to understand, informative tutorial. Please do one on audio because yours is always on point! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it's appreciated!
i watched your draw your life episode and got so inspired as I am currently 18 years old and feel as if I am wasting my life and talent , I love photography, acting , singing and all that but gave up"just because." I no horrible reason but after I watched your video and how you over came the trails in your life and still held on I am genuinely booking a ticket to go to Melbourne in Australia and take photos and get involved with TV shows but keep working to afford more adventures, so thank u
When using the ring light, is it best to use while in the dark? Also, I use a regular 13 watt energy saving bulb and my question is, with the umbrella lighting, will I white out since I'll be using a higher watt bulb?
So helpful, I need to go watch more of your videos! The fluorescent lighting looked the best to me in this video. Your voice is so soothing and I love the way this was done, new subscriber here :)
Thank you so much for this video! I can't even begin to describe or explain how much I appreciate it. I'm kinda-sorta-new to both photography and makeup, and lighting is one of my biggest challenges. So I love this. Again, thank you!
Thank you, Maya.. I learned so much from this and your other techie videos. All your videos are beautifully done, and knowing a little about the work you put into them is awe inspiring! (P.S. Please update the entry level cameras video MUCH later in the year- around the holidays. I just watched it recently and of course thought about how it would've been great months ago for gift ideas.)
this tutorial was soooooooo helpful bc i have a mini ring light for makeup shots im not a professional but im dying to start my own channel but didnt know how to really set up my lighting this was awesome i will def be following and watching ur tutorials i love it thanks for sharing
I prefer shooting with natural light over anything else, but I'm finding myself in more situations where artificial light sources are needed. Concert photographer is what I like more than anything else. I really enjoy your work and see your fascination with lighting. It's like you take the videographer's approach. Doesn't make sense on the surface, but I know there are subtle differences.
You are a gorgeous, amazing person and i hope you don't let anyone get you down you have inspired me to use your shameless motto in my life You brilliant in every single way Maya your FABULOUS!!!
Hey Maya! I would love you to do a video on benefits of umbrella lighting vs soft box lighting. I've seen a few vids but they are not very comprehensive.
pls pls pls do a video on ur opinion of what are good cameras to invest in! the pros and cons and what are used to film and what are used to photograph
I came here via Karima Shameless Fripperies blog and pressed play and I legit let out the weirdest sound @ your beauty lol it made me laugh so much I just wanted to share. You're so stunning, as are your makeup and lighting skills!! Excited to watch more :)
these tips are super helpfull because I am studying digital photography and I want to start to build a mini studio. But I wasnt really sure what was the best to start with... thank you so much!!!
Question . I wanted to ask what lighting will you recommend for filming at night ? Maybe a LED head light ? Wanted you suggestion . Thank you so much for the video btw , helped a lot !
This is so nice of you I love natural lighting but unfortunely the sunlight doesnt stay up forever so I will try the unbrella lights and the ring light
The love/hate relationship with natural lighting. Living in London + shooting tutorials in "daylight" = nightmare! I needs that ring light. Soon time ;P P.s. you explained this so well and simple even for beginners!
HOLY MOLY!! Maya, I've just been binge watching your videos as research for starting my own channel and I cannot begin to tell you how helpful you've been! Thank you so so much!

you don't really need to use a reflector but when i use it I generally use it below by my chest or waist area depending on how tight the shot is
i'm glad you found my channel :)
Thank you thank you! this was hard for since i'm not used to explaining anything when it comes to photography
Thank you, Maya. I learned several things and that's always cool.
no i bought backdrops from the pro camera stores :) they come in so many colors! i have a bunch!
:) my biggest challenge is finding a way to share information so it's properly understood. these types of videos are the hardest for me but it's worth it :)
thanks! it was soooooo hard! i've never had to explain the complicated logic in my head!
no filter :) it is intense but you can adjust the output or the settings on your camera :)
of course i'm still buzzing! live here on APRIL 24TH @3PM EST
it depends on what you're going for. the good thing is it's all digital now so just take a shot and make whatever adjustments...if it doesn't work out you can change it up :)
i've listed all of this both in the video as well as my description box

it depends on how bright or how much space i have to work with. usually around 3 ft
i do have a zoom but i use my iphone 4 voice memo for most of my voice overs :)
you can get them from any camera store! just google seameless backdrop
it is an old Nikon D80. it was great but technology keeps improving so they have better more updated cameras now
one more question. how do you get the paper to stand up? on the paper stand thing? lol
yeah i keep em so close! but i prefer my ring light since it's a fast and simple set up
I want to start making videos but had no idea where to start now I learned about light. Every video of yours that I watch gives me more guts lol. I appreciate your informative videos.. something with a small f-stop...look for 2.8 or something in that range. it's pricey though...
but it looks sooooo good! especially in your vids!
that you need to read reviews on. i hate my ring light but i'm stuck with it for now :)
it's all personal. i just hate setting up boxes! unless you have room to store them already assembled it's a pain. umbrellas are easy and fast
Maya I love that you are such a giving person to share all your knowledge! I also love that you can draw, do phot editing and photography. So talented. I really enjoy watching your videos and your fun, positive spirit.
voice is so calming like for real
YES! I want to! maybe in April to tan my bald head, but definitely June :)
Great video! These are very helpful tips fro beginners! I just learned something new about you. You are a photographer and filmmaker! That's awesome!
ok ok. these are so hard for me! i'm not used to explaining photography. it's always just been in my head unsaid. i guess somebody's gotta do it :)
it's a roll of seamless paper you can buy from a pro camera store :)
you need to research your exporting options and make sure you're exporting at a high resolution
Awesome tutorial Maya! Love you so sooo much. Your natural inner Light always shines bright through in all of your videos. Im so glad you decided to start your Shameless journey because we would all have missed out on something really big. Keep shining darling. You inspire us all to do the same :)
i did 90% of my voice over's with my voice memo yes :) but the last 3 vids i'm using something more hightech...gotta up my game up :)
This was VERY informative. Thank you!
Henry's & Vistek are the first that come to mind but just do a google search :)
Hi Shameless Maya I'm considering the ring light but read reviews that said it's extremely bright. Did you use a filter gel/ gel filter (idk) over it? Great video, very informative! Can you do a video on china balls lighting please?

I have a project to do for photography and this was very helpful. thank you!!

Hi there, love your channel, I had a question, I have the Canon t4i, what the best silent lens you would recommend for videos?
Easy to understand, informative tutorial. Please do one on audio because yours is always on point! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it's appreciated!

thank you Dee!
google Ultra Sonic Lens (USM) for Canon. those are said to be quiet. pricier though which is why most YTers do voice overs :)
Us women are so lucky to have such a great circle of teachers on you tube...and today i found another one!!!! Thank you maya
Just watched your first episode on The Platform! Represent girl!
This thing is really happening. Keep on being SHAMELESS!!!

When using the ring light, is it best to use while in the dark? Also, I use a regular 13 watt energy saving bulb and my question is, with the umbrella lighting, will I white out since I'll be using a higher watt bulb?

Thank you so much for this video! I can't even begin to describe or explain how much I appreciate it. I'm kinda-sorta-new to both photography and makeup, and lighting is one of my biggest challenges. So I love this. Again, thank you!

Mya - This was really helpful! I tend to use natural lighting but you are so right...you are at the mercy of the sun!
I prefer shooting with natural light over anything else, but I'm finding myself in more situations where artificial light sources are needed. Concert photographer is what I like more than anything else.

Hey Maya! I would love you to do a video on benefits of umbrella lighting vs soft box lighting. I've seen a few vids but they are not very comprehensive.

Thanks lovely! these lights are cheap so make sure you take care when handling them :)
i think the next one will be on understanding your camera: ISO, shutter speed, aperture :)
Literally the most helpful video I've ever watched. And you weren't condescending either!
This was literally PERFECTION! I've always had a problem with lighting for my videos. Thinking about splurging on a Light source :33
I Love how you explain this. I try to edit my videos like you do. You make the visualization so easy to understand.
I came here via Karima Shameless Fripperies blog and pressed play and I legit let out the weirdest sound @ your beauty lol it made me laugh so much I just wanted to share. You're so stunning, as are your makeup and lighting skills!! Excited to watch more :)

Absolutely fantastic. Finally some tips that are affordable and easy to understand. Thank you, Maya!!!
This is so nice of you I love natural lighting but unfortunely the sunlight doesnt stay up forever so I will try the unbrella lights and the ring light
With fluorescent light would you close your blinds or keep natural light also coming through, and would you also switch on indoor lights?
Her voice is so calm😅
the emoji haha
BeautySJ ikr
BeautySJ tbh
The love/hate relationship with natural lighting. Living in London + shooting tutorials in "daylight" = nightmare!
I needs that ring light. Soon time ;P
P.s. you explained this so well and simple even for beginners!
I GOT SUPER EXCITED JUST FROM READING THE TITLE OF THIS VID !!!!!
That's my mission statement :) to entertain and educate
Great video! I am new to photography and videography and this helps. I really love the sound track. How can I find more like it?
