- As the Mayan kingdom faces its decline, the rulers insist the key to prosperity is to build more temples and offer human sacrifices. Jaguar Paw, a young man captured for sacrifice, flees to avoid his fate.
I was around 8-9 yrs old when i first watched this film with my parents. Im turning 24 now, and still think that this is one of the BEST movies I've watched. Truly a masterpiece.
Verdade...Pra mim foi um dos melhores filmes que já assisti também. E agora em 2021 assisti outra vez!

Because the movie is not synchonised. If you could watch gladiator just in latin, it would not been that much succesfull.

Absolutely one of the top 3 most underrated films of the last decade...
thats a good question lol..I suppose I have a hard time calling it #1, but it's damn close in my book....mayb Cloud Atlas and Let the Right One In? There are several contenders Im sure...Will Preston
jackhackett80 have you seen The Fall? no one else has
Will Preston
I just looked it up, and no I haven't. It really looks interesting I will check it out for sure. Thanks for the recommendation. I know I'm always missing some, so thats why I am reluctant to say something is #1 without having a more complete frame of reference...
+jackhackett80 Absolutely spot-on call on Apocalypto, but I wonder if Let the Right One In was actually that underrated? Granted, most Anglophonic viewers will probably think of the (as I have been told) inferior remake, but the Swedish original did garner very respectable ratings from audiences and critics that did see it. Cloud Atlas was conceptually interesting, but I think as a sheer movie it had too many flaws to qualify as an underrated masterpiece. In my opinion, of course! :)
+jackhackett80 for me, the top 3 most underrated movies are
3. Apocalypto
2. The Proposition
1. Once Upon a Time in America

A masterful all-time favorite. The cultures, religions and settings were unfamiliar, there was nothing I could latch onto-except, oh, the sheer humanity of these characters…It’s riveting, the actors are phenomenal, and I was surprised by the scope of Gibson’s direction. An A-list movie if you love movies and great storytelling.
Unfamiliar? 😂 What? When something is different, you have difficulty for feelings? 🤔 Me, it is the reverse! Their life, with nature, family, people, in peace. Except for the slavers. I reed a book with draws, about this kind of people. This european girl loves so much their lives, she stays. They going to migration (current for them), it is difficult, but she said: "The love they have for all, kindness, respect for nature, all is love and tender in our lives..." Maybe you're american! 😂 All is different of your style life is strange, weird, etc. So, in fact, the "civilization", occidental way of life, is probably the worst! One day civilation will be dead, and humans like them, punks with dogs, homelesses, farmers, hunters, "savage'' people will be survive! (Before total extinction!😂)... How can be not imediatly be admirated by them, even with different religions, lives, etc??? 🤔 Colon spirit maybe... 😂
Mel Gibson didn't force Hollywood stars into this passion project and still made a masterpiece. Haters gonna hate.
Maybe that's why the movie did not get the recognition he deserves.

One of the most powerful films I have ever seen. The visuals, the story. It evokes incredible emotions and feelings. This film will not disappear in the timeline. 🖤🖤🖤
"Apocalypto" is a masterpiece. I've -bought the bootlegged dvd- borrowed the dvd from my aunt which lives in US and because I couldn't find the subtitles in its menu I've honestly thought it's a movie played in Mayan only (like "The Passion of the Christ" played entirely in Old Aramaic). I've watched it and I liked it so much that when my wife came home I've played the movie for a second time and while watching it I was translating to her, step by step what was my interpretation of their dialogue in Mayan. Anyways, weeks later, by accident I've found the subtitles hidden by mistake in a submenu and when I've played it I was shocked to discover that my explanations were spot on, almost 100%. The whole movie is perfect; the way it was directed, the scenes, the script, the characters and their flawless act, everything is so beautifully put together that you can watch it with no subtitles at all. Try it. This is a work of a genius.
PS
Later on I've bought a legit dvd for my good movies collection. It deserves this statute

They should make more movies about Mesoamerica. For the Aztecs as well as the Incans. We have all these movies about the North American Indigenous peoples so why not MesoAmerica?
+Christopher Ramos Well you can thank the Spanish conquerors for that.

+Kelly Angel Burn This movie is completely historically inaccurate, however it's still a good movie.
I remember watching movies like Emporer's New Groove and Road to El Dorado as a kid and loving them (I know it's different but still). I've read up on Mesoamericans, and though I'm no expert by any stretch, I still find them a fascinating set of cultures that are very underused.
Also, as a fantasy nerd, I'd love to see someone,do something with this setting, because... I'm tired of Europe.
There was a point in there somewhere, I think.
I discovered „Apocalypto“ years ago accidentally and I remember how it blowed me away for 2hours and 18 minutes!! Breathtaking and genius work of incredibly talented Mr. Gibson . Everyone should see this amazing movie .
I remember watching this when I was like seven. The thought of finding this movie now that I’m way older crossed my mind. All I remembered was that they were perhaps Mayan/Aztec people...I had remembered someone being painted blue and being ripped apart and someone had to escape. From the memories I remembered of this movie, I had to find it again. Now here I am, I remembered and am going to rewatch the movie.
This film never gets old, I just watched it again today and I get the same feeling I did the first time I saw it. Brutal, sad, visually stunning! Every scene is a masterpiece
This trailer does not justify how great this movie is! I'm not even a fan of action movies, and I became very fond of this movie. Highly recommend it!
I am astonished by Mel Gibson's imagination. He presents the apocalypse as a consequence of many seemingly unrelated things, along with the human spirit as a factor. Never gets old.
It always saddens me when I see the kids follow them until they reach the river.
I wish they could have showed us what happened to the kids. Did they make it or the forest was too much for them.

The movie is an underrated masterpiece. But what frustrates me about it is the fact that they chose to portray the late postclassic of the Maya. Can you imagine a film about the classic Maya? Enormous cities, clean drinking water for everyone, theaters, poets, philosophers, perfectly white roads connecting one city to the other, nonstop trade with places so distant as Panama and Sonora. That would be the real game-changer.
I think you are mistaken Ancient Maya civilization with Ancient Greece.

Which historical inaccuracies are you talking about?
@@nicholasoneal1521 I recommend you watch HistoryBuff's review of the movie and he points out the inaccuracies. Yet to name a few- Jaguar Paw's village, how some of the characters were dressed, the architecture of the city melded together different styles from different periods of Mayan history and Gibson did copy Aztec elements in the sacrificial ritual (not a lot but I noticed a few). While there are some aspects of the film that were correct, it shows how infamous Gibson is in picking what he wants from history just to tell a story he wants to tell. The movie I still admire yet see there were some elements and the screenplay could have been portrayed better.

@@nicholasoneal1521 I will agree with you a bit on that, some of History Buff's review I took with a grain of salt. He also rambled on quite a bit about his disdain for Gibson, which I kind of get but I digress. Though I give him a nod for consulting a Mayan expert to help in his review. Granted, when I first saw the movie I did not know as much about Mayan history as I do now and could see the film was aimed at the Post-Classic period. Apart from his review, I spoke with both a Mayanist and Art Historian who pointed out inaccuracies as far as some of the personal adornment, hairstyles etc. Still, I admire what "Apocalypto" did portray correctly and the I do use it as a template in a way as I am planning on writing a novel set within the Mayan civilization myself.
