Marc Gregoire, yeah. It was great. This song was on the B-side of the Same Old Lang Syne single, but didn’t make it on the final album. Not sure why. This song was very pretty and very unique.
Nice job. Actually the song was recorded in the key of D. He takes an open E chord and tunes it one whole step down. Yes, he uses this tuning for "Once Upon A time", "The Reach", "Forefathers", and other songs. The Reach he plays in the key of G, using the same open E chord tuning but with Capo 3. Great job in learning this!
Love this song, and the lesson, Thank you. I am a Native of Colorado and crossed Dan Fogelbergs path a few times but never got to meet the man. Thanks again!
Wow! Thanks for posting a great song. I woke up hearing it my head and wondered if it was on UA-cam ...so I looked and found you. I sat down with guitar and tuned to D and followed along. One thing that threw me at first was at 3:07...the index rather than the first finger is what moves to the D string. Again, great post. Thank you< Marc!
I'm so glad that I found you. Thank you so much. I think you teach guitar very well and I dig your voice. I play this song now at my local coffee shop. The young kids ask me did I write the song, and as much as I'd like to tell them that I did, I simply tell them about Fogelberg.
Sorry I'm just getting around to responding, but life got in the way. Thank you for your response and I would be happy to help you with any songs. Please let me know.
Bro! You rock! Thanks, thanks, thanks for putting this out there! I recently decided to add this song to my playlist and had found a way to play it in a standard tuning ... the way DF did it is better (of course!) and I really wanted to it to have that "sound" ... You nailed it!!!! Older bros united! Seriously ... thanks, Marc! Steve
You're right this is a song is not taught anywhere on the UA-cam except for you. My guitar teacher taught me this song back in the early 80s. It was one of those easy to play versions not at all like the way you play it sounds good though. Maybe I'll make it my first music post
Johnny, I rarely look at these videos but saw your post. This surly demonstrates the power of social media, , ,that you found me after 45 years! I have fond memories of Ft. Lewis and the house on Tacoma Lake.
Thanks for this video Marc. I was watching Dan play this live on a 2003 video and thought I'd try and get a head start and find the tuning online...and there you were. Great job. Funny thing, a few days back I had watched The Edge play Stuck in a Moment on Letterman and he uses the same tuning...so I had a guitar ready to go.
Thanks for the reply. I use this tuning for more and more songs. Currently, I use it for 4 of my favorite songs: Fogelberg's "The Reach" and "Hard To Say", Jackson Browne's "All Good Things" and "The Shape of A Heart". Let me know if you want me to post any of these--always happy to help a fellow picker.
Great lesson! I knew he used an alternate but didn't know exactly what it was. Always wanted to learn this one! I'll try Shape of a Heart as well and see how that works! Thanks for the post!
Marc, this is Johnny Callahan, Spec-4 Medic from the 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis. Looking for my long lost guitar buddy with your name, I think its you, its been like 38 years?????? You were a hell of a guitar player back then, and even better now. I found your buddy John Greene in San Diego, we played together for a while, we both knew you. give me a shout
Hey man, you're doing a great job but please tune your guitar up perfectly before you start recording. That sharp little E string is annoying. P.S. I am a huge Dan fan, too.
Love ! My favorite is THE REACH !
Great lesson Marc! Loved it! Would you try to do a tutorial on Hearts and Crafts sometime? Seems to be no lesson available for this one.
I'll see what I can do. I love the song and the whole album.
Marc Gregoire, yeah. It was great. This song was on the B-side of the Same Old Lang Syne single, but didn’t make it on the final album. Not sure why. This song was very pretty and very unique.
Marc Gregoire, you could do a tutorial on Back Home Again - Denver and New York’s Not My Home - Croce. Love both of these!
Great video - cool D35. I play this song but just learned a couple things - thanks. :-)
Thank you. Let me know if you want to see any other Fogelberg songs.

The Shool of Hard Rocks. I've just been playing since I was 13.
Open D. Thought so.
Ditto on everyone you made a hard song easy.
