Chris Gore is a writer, comedian, author and television personality who has built a solid reputation as a hilariously outspoken voice in the entertainment world. As a teenager, Chris founded the brutally honest magazine Film Threat, which began as a fanzine while he was a college student in Detroit. As Film Threat evolved into a respected national magazine, he relocated to Los Angeles. The print magazine was retired in 1997 when it was re-launched as a web site. FilmThreat.com found a huge audience online and was named one of the top five movie web sites by the Wall Street Journal. Chris has appeared as a film expert on MSNBC, E!, CNN, Travel Channel, and Reelz Channel. Chis has also hosted shows on FX, Starz, IFC and G4TV’s Attack of the Show as the show’s film expert. His weekly movie review segment DVDuesday was among the most popular on G4. Chris is also an author, having written The 50 Greatest Movies Never Made and The Complete DVD Book. His book The Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide is considered the bible of the industry and is required reading at film school.

@@jeremyharris3616 I think the Iron Man movies are a little different. I see the entire MCU project as basically one big movie. Also, the project was derivative of source material (serialized comics), so it was conceived from the beginning as a series of endless sequels. They were baked into the cake. None of the hired writers had the authority to kill Iron Man at any point. That's why they're not terribly creative. They are, however, on the whole, the most successful set of sequels ever made.

One of the interesting things about the first Wonder Woman movie is that it embraces a certain kind of old-school feminism, and winds up being a critique of modern feminism. At no point does Wonder Woman give some rousing speech about women's rights, or chastise the men for not taking her seriously enough. In fact, she mostly seems too busy to care. Instead, she's just acts as someone who is capable and has a heroic character, and she earns the respect and loyalty of the men around her by virtue of who she is as a person. This is the core tenet of an earlier feminism: Women are capable. And it's anathema to modern feminism, which says women are victims and everyone needs a lecture about their privilege.

    • @TheMisterGuy

"This is the core tenet of an earlier feminism: Women are capable. And it's anathema to modern feminism, which says women are victims and everyone needs a lecture about their privilege."
Recognizing the existence of privilege or how systems work to keep people down is not anathema to the idea that the people who are negatively affected are capable.

    • @Virtuoso80
      @Virtuoso80 2 роки тому +84

@@TheMisterGuy It's a massively overrated concept IMO when it comes to men and women. Men have built entire societies around trying to control the power women have over them. To view those societies as oppressing women is to see an incomplete picture. Men have gone to war over women. Who really had the power in Homer's epic: Was it the kings and princes who commanded armies and want to war over Helen or Troy, or was it Helen of Troy herself? Men, including modern western men, sometimes shape their entire lives around trying to be someone who can ultimately attract women. They try to be the person, attain the money/fame/status, develop and demonstrate the qualities, all so attractive women will pick them. Who has the true power in the dynamic?
Male privilege is mostly a myth, even if you ignore all that - men and women throughout history took on roles best suited to them so that they could both survive. Being a man meant you had to die in war, go down with the ship, do brutal menial labor, accept that you were disposable, etc. Modern feminism wants to make a buffet out of the aspects of male gender roles, taking what they want for themselves, while leaving the less palatable stuff for men to continue suffering on their own. That's some bullshit right there.

@@Virtuoso80 Did you watch a movie or read the book? The war was started because Menelaus’s bother won Helen in a battle/competition and because Helen was seen as Menelaus’s property. I am not sure how you see being won in a competition and being forced to be with someone you find repulsive is having power. If anything, this only perpetuates the male perspective that a woman’s only power is in something she cannot control, her beauty, and in the end even that didn’t save her. You read the Cliff’s Notes, it seems.
Women were traded like cattle until not that long ago, for the success and prosperity of the men around them, and in some places they still are. I don’t know what you’re talking about, but even if you disagree with the whining victim-mentality of some feminists today, to disagree with the fact that they’ve been held down for most of history until recently (and still have unfair expectations put on them, and get less pay), then you need to read more and to learn how to put yourself in other people’s shoes. You know, one of the core tenants of being a writer. You must SUCK as writing from the female perspective.

Instead of focusing on a coherent story, they decided to randomly make it political without making it good. A show can be political, there's nothing wrong with that. What's wrong is to preach a one sided argument that's not even a good argument. Winter soldier is a good example, they focused on the politics of shield and NOT try to make it an allegory for something in real life. Also they disrespected not just falcon but captain America and the avengers in general. We don't need a black captain America, we want the falcon to step up. Instead they downgrade him and demote him from being his own original character to being a token of a failed comic book line. It.......did .........NOT........entertain. I work really hard all week and when I come home I just want to turn the TV on, turn my brain off and relax. Being told that all cops are racist and the golden line "stop calling them terrorists" in defence of a bunch of terrorists made me turn it off and not watch anymore marvel shows. I am sick and tired of being preached at by millionaires who never once experienced actual struggles. That's why I welcomed the very idea of a transformers/ fast and furious crossover. They would take "Mandy" (some teen bimbo) and brilliant, sassy Doc "Elizabeth" Brown (Leslie Jones), and have them invent the time machine together, to prove wrong the evil professor Carruthers (Ben Kingsley) of Harvard's department of Yale time travel division. Carruthers wants to send his own Time-o-naut, Jack Whiterson (Chris Hemsworth), back in time to cheat at the stock market and assassinate civil rights leaders. But Mandy and Elizabeth travel back in time together, beat up Whiterson and his thirty Norwegian henchmen, and fix it so that Carruthers is now scrubbing toilets in the future. They then sit and drink tea and talk about their feelings, and it ends with Elizabeth looking at the camera and cackling, "Now dat's what I call having the TIME of my life!" Roll credits.

    • @boxofficerenegade6564
      @boxofficerenegade6564 2 роки тому +1

Well, yes and no. It's not that reboots don't work, it's that they don't work anymore. In the 2000s and early new '10s (2010-2012), reboots had a creative element to them. The writers would be putting their own creative mark on the story, like changing certain elements in the narrative or changing elements in the world building, not just swapping or a changing a character's race or gender.
For example (well, a few examples),
In the Dark Knight Trilogy, Christopher Nolan set the narrative in a grounded reality, doing away with the mystical and sci-fi elements and giving us the most realistic version Batman, showing us how Batman's story would work in reality.
In Casino Royale, we got to see the origins of James Bond, something no previous Bond film ever discussed, and thus witness him grow into the secret agent that we know and love.
In Battlestar Galactica (2003), Ronald D. Moore did away with most of the fantastical elements from the original series, including the presence of alien species, made the science mostly realistic, focused on the effects the crews of the surviving fleet would be experiencing after barely escaping genocide and explored several real world themes such as race, religion, politics and PTSD among others.
The Star Trek reboot set the narrative in an alternate reality and allowed us to see how Kirk and Spock would become the Captain and First Officer of the Enterprise, even if a few elements in their lives had been different, such as Kirk's father being killed the day he was born.
And even Man of Steel altered some of the world building for Krypton, such as the Genesis chamber, sorting citizens into classes or guilds based on their genetics and the lack of natural births, which did in some way help to enrich Superman's origin story, even if the narrative was somewhat problematic (I still liked it though).
The difference between reboots today and the reboots of yesteryear showcase how a good portion of creativity has been stripped from the industry. Creativity means taking risks, and I believe many studios don't want to take risks, because playing it safe, more often than not, means more money.

While I agree with your sentiment let’s look at the big picture: it’s the Fast & The Furious, meaning what the audience wants is car theatrics and the plot exists as a nicety. If you happen to write a great and smart F&TF script, call it something original and don't throw it away contributing to a brain dead franchise. Which isn’t putting down movies like TF&TF, if describe it more like pick one type of movie or the other, but don’t try to cross Tranformers with Godfather, it doesn’t work.

Sure, but what I think is actually dumb is dumb movies pretending that they’re smart. To me, Zack Snyder is a great example of a filmmaker that is pretending there’s something profound going on underneath when there absolutely is not. You can shine it up all you want, but at the end of the day a film like the Tranformers is only about watching cars turn into robots and smashing into things and trying to apply much more to it is wasting everyone’s time. Let’s face it, it’s basically porn and the mechanics of good screenwriting fundamentally don’t apply to such material. And to be clear there’s a
time and place for everything. ;)

I was watching The Wrath of Khan recently and there’s the scene where Khan is introduced - it’s slow-paced and character-focused, with building tension and exposition that feels completely natural and unforced. It isn’t just a great scene - it makes the rest of the movie great.
It’s a secondary character that we like (Chekhov) facing a scary person and not knowing what’s coming next. That’s all.
You can almost see the corporate boardroom watching that scene and yelling, “where are the explosions?!”
Star Trek 2 was clearly made by people who loved it. Today movies are made by people who love money.

What's really amazing is Director Nicholas Meyer and Writer Harve Bennett are on record of having never watched Star Trek before getting the roles so what each did was watch the entire series, look at the problems The Motion Picture had, and churned out the final script in only 12 days. Meyer would also direct The Undiscovered Country and was a writer on it and The Voyage Home. Had Wrath of Khan been a flop that might have been the end of the franchise.

I already made a parody video about "Back to the future 4" which might actually come true one day.
The protagonist is Marty's daughter who's a biracial lesbian (because loving a man is so anti-feminist). Marty wants to create the time machine again but he can't because he's not too smart. His biracial lesbian daughter on the other hand is a theoretical physicist who finally discovers the secret of going back in time. She goes back to when Dr Brown created the time machine and actually teaches him how to make the machine because it's too complicated for his straight white male mind. He makes the time machine and guess what, totally steals the idea from her and after she goes "back to the future" he tells everyone that it was his invention. So it turns out it was the biracial lesbian woman all along.

Dead Man's Chest has many fun areas but it is having to set up a lot for 3 so it's not a self-contained story like the first movie. For me At World's End suffers from bloat and it doesn't feel like some of the cast have enough to do (Keira Knightley in particular) but it's not a bad movie even if I'd rank it the weakest of the first three films. I did really like On Stranger Tides and that ultimately might be my favorite after the first movie because it did feel like it was trying to do something different from the first three that still fits in the idea of the PotC world.

Star Wars: Luke goes from being an untrained, barely-aware Jedi wannabe to...finding a new mentor and getting some actual training. Alien(s): Ripley goes from the terror of the first alien encounter to confronting those fears at the source. Godfather: Michael goes from becoming the godfather who lost his soul to the emptiness of losing his entire family (a father without a family). Cheers: Frasier (not the main character of Cheers, we know) goes from a pompous know-it-all to...okay, I'm going to have to think about that some more. It sounds more and more like Star Wars does too now, so much so that they have been laying the seeds to not necessarily erase it entirely, but instead to neuter their impact by relegating it to a potential future determined by whether or not Ashoka Tano is killed at the hands of Darth Vader in Star Wars: Rebels.

Me too, but there's worse sequels than that. Ace Ventura 3, The Mask 2, Godfather 3 were all bottom of the barrel bad compared to SW. The new SW was just forgettable linear storytelling garbage not much different than most superhero movies today. At least it didn't insult your intelligence the way the previously mentioned movies did.

Lol yeah, it's like the Friday the 13th movies. You can't keep doing the same thing, and the well isn't deep, so you have to do something ridiculous and unique to make it memorable. Remember that time Busta Rhymes killed Michael Myers?
Eventually you can go back to your roots a bit and be basic, but that takes a couple decades for the nostalgia to kick in.

@@BMoser-bv6kn some movies get it. Aliens, t2. Basically keep it the same other than one crucial factor. Like when they made the new Star Wars trilogy they basically made it the empire Vs the rebellion. Lame.
Like xmen get it. The fight Magneto in each but after the first time he must team with them. If the new Star wars movies started same as the first then aliens invade so the sith n Jedi much work together they’d be staying with same factors just introducing new dynamic and instead it’s just Death Star 5.0. Lame

Biggest disappointment for me would be the way the fast and the furious franchise progressed. Listening to interviews with the people who make those movies really only pissed me off. "how are we going to do it bigger and better.. bigger and better.. next one has to be even bigger! let's make it even better!!" The entire time he thought better meant to turn the story into a fantasy series about stupid stunts that take the viewer right out of the movie and remind them that they're just watching an entirely ridiculous stunt reel rather than movie with human characters in a universe that follows laws of physics. The characters went from being regular people to being able to performing stunts only a superhero out of Marvel could accomplish. Watching those films feels like watching a college project from a bunch of constantly drunk douchy guys who did a bunch of cocaine and decided to make a movie. Probably something like this, "bruh, Lets launch this car from the window of the burj!" "Yeah bro! sick!" "Sweet! F*&^ yeah!" "Lets give Dom the strength of The Hulk!!" "Bro! F*&^!!!!! YES!!!" .. an on to eternity they go. Cowtowing to china for all of their viewership numbers and profit because their movies suck didn't help either. Cena (who should have never been in any of the movies anyway) is such embarrassment now.
