Dean was the ultimate performer. I loved watching the Dean Martin Show. He always looked like he was genuinely having a great time on stage. He was an immensely talented man, a real gentleman with a big heart.

Actually Dean starred in The Young Lions in 1958 which was his first real dramatic role. Some Came Running followed in 1959 along with Rio Bravo which I've always felt was his best acting job. Other notable dramatic roles followed with Ada in 1961 and Toys in The Attic in 1963.
I was under the impression that the Minnelli film with Sinatra preceded The Young Lions with Clift and Brando. Interesting that Sinatra's film career was revived by co-starring with Montgomery Clift in From Here To Eternity, and Clift also helped launch Martin's dramatic film career in the Lions movie. Martin also befriended Clift during the making of the latter film.

Hello There Well, your friends may think that, but I have watched a lot of interviews and filmographies about Dean and everybody who actually knew him always said what a nice genuine guy he was, with a wonderful sense of humour. Even Jeannie, who surely had more reason than anyone to hate him after all his womanising, said in one interview; “I’ve never known a nicer man, a kinder man, a funnier man, a wonderful father, and a wonderful loving husband.” Which seems an extraordinary thing to say after all the times he cheated on her over the years, but it just goes to show that nobody really knows what goes on between two people ‘behind closed doors’ And the fact is that she did stay with him for 24 years, and even went back to him for the last few years of his life after his marriage to Catherine fell apart after only three years.

Jon D Whilst not disputing that the two of them had a great act together, I can’t agree that Jerry ‘taught Dean to laugh at life’. In every interview I’ve ever seen, everyone always said that Dean had a wonderful laid-back sense of humour and a very sharp wit even before the two of them met. Jerry,in contrast, was a much more physical comedian and something of a workaholic. He openly admitted in his biography, and elsewhere, that he’d had a very lonely childhood and that he looked up to Dean as his mentor and combined big brother/father figure. He was even jealous of Dean’s relationship with Jeannie; “he was MY partner, and I wanted to keep him to myself” In fact, considering these two men’s very different personalities it’s a wonder that the partnership lasted as long as it did. As Jerry said many years later; “he was working with a wacko, and he was incredibly patient. If things had been the other way round, I’d have been out of there after only about a year. Dean put up with it for 10 years before he wanted out.”

When he first heard the song, "That's Amore" I heard him saying in an interview many years ago that he thought it was a silly song.How is the moon going to hit your eye/eyes like a big pizza pie That's Amore. But if you pay very very close attention as he's singing the song, the lyrics are, and I know, I have an original copy of the sheet music and lyrics from where he was singing from the lyrics read: "When the moon hits your eyes like a big pizza pie That's Amore"but if you pay very very close attention as he's singing it, he puts his own twist and changes one word to give it that Italian feel/twist to it. ( Since it's an Italian song.)And he sings it "When the moon hits your eye like a "BIGGA PIZZA PIE" That's Amore" 🎶🎵🎵 Alot of people never caught this.
That's so helpful... one of my favorite things is seeing Dean lose it, just laugh, just giggle, with Jerry on stage. I've never seen him have that same joy giggle after Dean and Martin. He learned a lot from Jerry's phenomenal ability to improvise and be in the moment. Then when you see how he takes care of Jerry, holding him back, reining him in, he takes care of him and calms him in a way, which makes him more relatable to the audience. They were a great balance for each other and they learned and grew from each other. They would be such different people without Martin and Lewis. I love them and miss them.

Dean Martin knew how to corral an audience. He and Frank come from that classic late 50s early 60s American cocktail culture where smoking and drinking were accepted behaviors of the times. Dean was actually a better singer than Frank and his studio work by far was more eloquent and laid back than Frank's. It's a shame that cigarettes killed so many and is still a legal substance. It has claimed so many in the entertainment industry and thousands of others we don't hear about.
