  • @danblumel

    Many Chinese tend to say (pronounce) "breakfirst" not breakfast. The meaning of breakfast is this: to break your fast. Overnight while sleeping people typically eat nothing (fast) for about 12 to 14 hours. Eating nothing is called "fasting" so when you start eating again (breakfast) you break a fast.

    • @markplain2555
      @markplain2555 4 роки тому

      You know in French it's called a "small lunch" which might be more appropriate given the size of this guy's breakfirst.

    • @clay09
      @clay09 4 роки тому +1

      I think you're just hearing their accent saying it that way not necessarily that they are trying to say "first".

    • @danblumel
      @danblumel 4 роки тому

      @@clay09 No they think it has something to do with the "first" meal of the day. I have discussed this with more than a few Chinese English teachers in China. They learn it wrong from their past teachers and pass it to their students. Also there is no " r " in fast. If you were correct they would be saying "breakfist", but they clearly say "breakfirst".

    I wonder if any people work harder than the Chinese? It seems to be a strong cultural thing. In contrast, it would be very rare for my relatives back in Norway to eat dinner at the office - instead, they leave work at 5:00 PM and have dinner at home with their families. Fishermen are another matter, of course, as they stay out at sea for days at a time before returning to shore with their catch, and then they have to work hard to unload the ship so the fish can be sold. So, they go for longer periods without seeing their wives and kids. But I think that's true of fishermen anywhere in the world.
