Why China's Shein is beating ASOS, H&M and Zara at fast fashion

- Chinese e-commerce company Shein took the top spot as the most downloaded app in the United States in May, according to a report from intelligence firm Marketplace Pulse. The fashion giant outperformed TikTok and Instagram on the Apple App store and was far ahead of Amazon.
Since 2015, Shein has become a leader in its industry, initiating a new era of fashion experts call “real-time retail.”
“What Shein has done is, it has established a new norm, which is real time,” Allison Malmsten of Daxue Consulting told CNBC in an interview.
“It is very fast, and the products are updated much more frequently and at a higher volume than any other fast fashion brand.”
But its name has also been marred by trademark infringement allegations and questions about the sustainability of its manufacturing process - controversies some experts say could threaten the startup’s investment prospects.
“If it wants to IPO and if it wants to gather investments, then it really has to come clear and people really need to have peace of mind about what is happening at the company,” Malmsten said.
Watch the video above to learn more about Shein’s rise, successes and challenges.

So true
Extremely terrible. Turns me off from buying anything.
If we are honest stores like Forever 21, Rue 21, and a lot of the time H&M too, all carry the same quality that Shein does for about 3x the Shein price. Everyone is using the same flimsy/delicate fabrics that fall apart after a handful of washes. That’s why Shein is winning against everyone else, they actually charge a reasonable price for the mediocre quality. Brands need to spend some of the money they spend in marketing on their raw materials and increase the quality to match the prices
Wholeheartedly agree. I remember shopping at H&M a few years back and the quality was much better. Now not so much.
I have no issues with the items I've purchased from Shein. They've been washed several times and still holding up.
I don't agree, H&M quality is much better than Shein.
Shein-you can only expect so much for quality due to its pricing. H&M- while better than Shein- has shown an uptick in pricing but their quality isn’t what it used to be.
@@meaganyvonnetv yeah their quality is definitely not what it used to be, and sadly it keeps declining while the prices seem to keep increasing

The other companies are no better than Shein. They’re just mad because they’re beating them at their own game! 😂😂😂😂

Honestly, most fashion brands doesn't deserve high price, they spent more money on marketing and useless design but less money on quality. This is the true reason of SHEIN's success.
Preach!
Quality? Shein?

I think that about Zara. 7/10 of the clothes there are junk, extremely poor quality for the price. They're the perfect example of people thinking its quality because its expensive.

Fast fashion also has more to do with the consumers then the label.
"Sustainable fashion" tends to be just the same as "fast fashion" just that most people can't afford to throw it away to buy new stuff.

ASOS has become increasingly more expensive and ZARA has not been having the amazing sales that they once used to have. Not to mention, ZARA sizing has changed as well…limiting who can purchase from them. ZARA and H&M also has an issue with being bland and not truly innovative and fashion forward.
Not only is H&M bland, but the quality of even their basic items is trash. I washed 2 brand new, basic t-shirts from them and the seams came undone. A pair of pants I bought last year have already ripped at the inner thigh. Total waste of money. I might as well shop at Shein at this rate. 🤷🏽♀️
asos is at the verge of giving up on fashion based on the style of clothes they've been selling. I just look at some of them and go "really?"...
ASOS are staring to drop especially since they lost their CEO Nick, Zara don’t do sales anymore mostly because they don’t want to become a place where customers expect sales. I’ve never brought anything from Zara they’ve never done anything for me since the start tbh.
Well, how can these brands be innovative if they steal all their designs from smaller fashion designers…
@@ozelotpanda7990 Yeah I get that, but they do have their own brands as well, we’ll ASOS does anyway so I guess they should try that way to bring more ideas. But at the same time fast fashion is practically a cheaper version or knock off of designers for the customers.
H AND M has way worse material on clothing with more expensive prices
It's true. I wasn't happy with the stuff that I got from H&M. I got a pair of sports pants with pockets too smart and uncomfortable

Yes, 100% agree, the different now is the material, high-end luxury brands have way better material, and their clothes are complex, they do not scare of shein or fast fashion at all. those small boutiques should learn to improve their products instead of complaining!
It's sad to see that other companies have to accuse and belittle their competitor that's doing better than they are, even though they themselves are doing the exact same as what they are accusing. Double standards.
Loool honestly I also think zara is copying shein's clothes. Which it's fair enough
This!! I have seen designs that Shein had one day, and a season after I saw many similar stuff in H&M. I always used to think it was the opposite, but now I don’t think so.
And then shein designs came from the small businesses 😭
We have to admit that fashion is an insanely overpriced economy, so cheap/ultra-fast fashion becomes the main player in the market.
It's not overpriced
It's labour intensive
Teaaaaa
You're conditioned into thinking it's overpriced because of fast fashion. When you actually use decent quality fabrics and pay your workers a proper wage it can get "expensive"
bear in mind only 6% of SHEINs stock of clothing will continue to sell for 30 days. All the rest yeah, you can guess
@@yes-gs2rd this is true, and I do think that fast fashion is a bad cycle that includes pollution and improper treatment of workers in third-world countries. However, when social media has a strong influence on everyone's dress decisions, it is the fact that consumers are more likely to choose SHEIN over Zara/H&M. By overpriced, I mean these OG fast fashion companies do not deserve to generate so much revenue as they did in the old days, so having new competitors in the market, in my opinion, can somehow improve the market in the way that these companies will no longer be advertising for fast/cheap but instead quality and design.

I get that Shein is an incredibly problematic company, probably more than other fast fashion brands, but to a lot of us it is our best option. I'm not talking about tik tokers and other influencers who buy huge amounts of cheap clothes and shoot hauls (don't even get me started with influencers who wear a full Shein outfit and then pose in front of Chanel stores lol), I'm talking about people who don't have the financial freedom to buy clothing from brands that used to be considered affordable such as Zara and now are getting on the pricier side, while not even improving their quality. I have Shein clothes that have lasted me 4, 5 years so far, so I'd say the waste has a lot to do with the fact that trends now last shorter and people just easily throw them away. All in all, shop smart. Be it Shein or Zara, just buy what you need, which fabrics can last a relatively long time and what you see yourself wearing for the next years.

hopefully, she will be out
If you take a look at this comment section, the vast majority don't care enough regardless of ethics, so that's why they don't feel the need to be transparent - we as a society have forgotten the times when people only had a few quality clothes that would last them decades on end due to SHEIN's consumerism trap
It doesn't but every company is like that and that is because they want to be the owner of the market. I would imagine there will be more in the coming years. Shein might not be the only player but many many others.
There are ethical brands like Organic Basics, Allbirds, Vieja, SmartWool or Rich & Sporty. But even luxury brands like Gucci, Armani, LV, Versace, Chanel and Hermes sew in sweatshops. So those who buy from these brands are not any better than those who buy from Shein
SHEIN should become a business case in business schools. In just one decade they have beaten the top fashion retailers. Also clever brand name marketing. My sister used to receive SHEIN catalogue at home. I originally thought it was a German fashion retailer as the name sounds German.
If it were German it'd be Schein
Right now H/M has rubbish its disappointing every year
It sounds US - She In
I’m a business student, here to do my own research.
Shein sounds German..? 🤨
Just being honest! I was a nurse that caught Covid in 2020 and haven’t improved. I have no income and went through a long spurt of depression. I said that I would never shop at Shein and when I saw those prices, it opened new doors for me as far as purchasing affordable fashionable clothing items.
You definitely need to look at the fabric used prior to purchase. Their 100% polyester items are lower quality but the viscose fabrics hold up longer. Just a thought.
It is addicting, especially when they have their clearance for items that you can buy for $4-$7.
With that being said, I am trying to stop my shopping at Shein and other brands like it as I explore a more minimalistic lifestyle for my mental health. Blessings to everyone 💜🙏🏾
They are just mad because it’s not a western company. Give them check pains SHEIN, we will continue to support you.
People are mad because how unethical and damaging to the environment and health Shein is.
In truth, Shein is stealing other’s ideas. But they don’t charge a mint for their knock offs. The delivery is also very fast and the items are of a decent quality.
It's true, but Zara and HnM do the same thing as Shein. The reason why they all sell clothes cheaper is that they don't need to pay for a designer. They just look at what the big name brands are doing and then mimic it, and it is all legal. They can even mimic a wedding dress that costs $10,000 for just 100 dollars.
Because Shein is honest, you buy cheap clothes at a cheap price but H&M have higher prices and clothes don't last
Cheaper than other clothing brands with a wide range of sizes and choices. Have shopped with them several times now and not been disappointed. Given the raise in prices with all the bills now . Companies like SHEIN are offering affordable clothing for everyone.
I have bought from shein and I also buy high in and. I used to buy from h&m their clothing doesn’t last at all. Shein has for the most from what,I purchased better quality.
It's sad to see that other companies have to accuse and belittle their competitor that's doing better than they are, even though they themselves are doing the exact same as what they are accusing. Double standards.
Yeah even Target is getting into the competition now.
But I feel bad for the small & local businesses. Not all of them copy each other.
@ISHA THIRU You are somewhat naive. There are levels to copying. Everyone copies everyone to different degrees and follow trends set by the global fashion committee. Unless the small biz are niche clothing.
Shop and support local. Why would you support anyone who steals ideas and knocks them out at a fraction of the cost? The cheap cloths are a problem in so many ways they are not durable, they contribute to the landfills in a big way, you are supporting theft (of someone else's ideas) and they contribute to the pollution situation with the overseas shipping. Shop local more.
Probably cause working class and middle class can't afford local.
I would never buy shein. I don't spend lots of money on clothes.
Facts
acturally, most people just by a clothes, and not interested in being a nationalist?
Pricing is everything.
I'm sure the environment loves SHEIN
yeah
they're even looking to marry next week 😍😍
No
Wtf are u on about
It's sad to see that other companies have to accuse and belittle their competitor that's doing better than they are, even though they themselves are doing the exact same as what they are accusing. Double standards.
Every company is responsible for the environment, including American brands like Nike and so on, because they all contribute to the pile. Long before Shien or fast fashion in general, they were saying how Nike, Addidas, and all the big names were doing the same thing. You know where all those clothes go, whether they are sold or not? into the dump like every other article of clothing that becomes out of style or last season's clothing. Of course you wouldn't know that because you don't see the bigger picture, but instead you wanted to say Shien is responsible because it is a Chinese company. Wake up!
It was the only budget fashion brand in india but they banned it. I hate the indian goverment from the core of my heart. they can't compete with Chinese brands but have have the audacity to ban them just to make the citizens suffer.
Shein has an excellent return policy, provides good prices. Plus recently I bought trousers from Nakd and it was the same quality as the ones I got from Shein
Nakd gets them from Shein. lol
This is absolutely refreshing and I am so happy I came across this video ! 😍♥️ ! Can’t wait for my feature 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂 🥰♥️ I WILLLLL align with all that is meant for me 🥰💕
This story should be about how shein is the leading company destroying the planet in the name of cheap, disposable clothing.
Bingo.
Cheap and disposable?
Very China styled
It's not Shein that's going into some rich kids bedroom and constantly emptying their closets.
My mom raised me as a single mom and not a lot of money so we could only afford second hand and "fast fashion". And let me tell you. I only had to throw away one of my jeans that got a whole in the crotch area. After 5 years of wearing it almost every day on every trip.
It's not about the quality or the company. It's about rich people being wasteful. But it's literally the same with what we call "high-end Fashion".
The only ppl that buys Shein and disposes right after using are Americans and their waste culture...
China the leading country destroying the planet in the name of cheap everything
I don’t know the other brands but Zara keeps getting more expensive, I’ll rather wait for the ssense sale and buy designer items for the same price.
Wow, I remember when it was still called "sheinside"
China are really doing well, and seems like america isn't with it.
Time to move to china
its trendy and affordable should they go up in price theyll be just like the rest
I love Shein!!! Great quality, great cloths! Nobody complains about Forever 21 or other fast fashion companies. That is because they charge more! Shein got rid of the middle man!!!!!! I say YES!!!!!!!! You get a lot for your money!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate to say but they offer excellent quality and a very low price. Love their stuff!
With such impossible time and price, let's be honest, it can only be done in China! No decent company in the West would bother to order 200 pieces of the same fashion and expect any supplier outside China to agree to make them! You need a fully developed and ultra-dynamic supply chain to pull off what Shein has done.
It'll work as long as the salaries are accepted, because that's why Zara had to outsource some production out of Spain. I don't know where else, but I think India. While I was still in Spain, a high end Chinese brand was open in Madrid Spain, and I and other friends loved it all. It's Shanghai Tang, of some clothing and accessories, including some home decor. I have a large purse and a type of small handbag, and I sure wish that I would have bought more. The coins and jade used on the straps. So original, beautiful cashmeres and silks. Women and men. Not at all like it used to be. It's gotten boring in the handbags. That was what most attracted us to the brand in Spain
Since Shein is a Chinese brand, westerns gonna start hating it. NB: Nobody can stop an idea whose time has come. ❤🇨🇳❤🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳❤🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳❤🙏
Shein has helped me widen up my fashion styles tremendously. Because it is so affordable and has a million styles available, I'm able to purchase many different styles and find out the ones that work for me. In the past, with limited budget, I could only buy the most common styles because they wouldn't go wrong, but those styles didn't necessarily fit my personality and body shape very well. Now I look back on what I bought years ago, those styles were so bland and ill-fitting, a total waste of my youthful years! How I wish Shein existed in when I was a young adult😭
Shein is the epitome of everything wrong with fast fashion.
Wrong for what, they allow you to create an outfit....get a life pall
Everything wrong with most of fashion in general. Most luxury brands produce in sweatshops: Gucci, Hermes, LV, Armani, Chanel and Versace. There are some ethical brands like Allbirds, Vieja, SmartWool, Rich & Sporty, Patagonia and Kojima but I still think there should be more.
This is crazy, as Shein are world well-know clothing/merchandise platform, I never had heard of it! I’m scratching my head how my friends, relatives, and I never heard of the name Shein. Now, I’ll have to dig into this platform…
Great narration! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Honestly SHEIN needs a store
Tik Tok, Shein, AliBaba, Huawei, TenCent etc. China is just getting started.
🇦🇫❤️🇨🇳
And the US has an issue with self-sufficient economies!
yeah but these all will be banned, wait and see, they want to cancel China as they are doing to Russia
@@1000xtati
You are WRONG.
CHINA is not russia😃
China is huge, China's economy is 20 times bigger than russia.
If the west could, they would do it long time ago 😃
🇦🇫🇨🇳💪
@@1000xtati That's impossible. US can't survive without China economically. China owns trillions of dollars of US debt.
Love SHEIN! Don’t care what you say it’s very fashionable and affordable!
1. Exploitation of labour
2. Unethical sourcing
3. Child labour
5. Non- biodegradable material
If you still don't care i don't know what will.
@@SlowLiving1 : show evidence to every line item that you’re claiming. Without definitive proof you’re just blowing your biases out your ass!
@@SlowLiving1 they are all doing the same
@@SlowLiving1 are you still wearing clothes? 😅
Literally me too!
keep grinding, eventually you'll sprout 🌱
In a age where salaries stay the same while everything else is going up in price...yeah it makes sense to buy cheaper clothing. Companies are just upset cause they don't reap in the profits themselves.
It’s my go to place. Zara don’t carry anything for my body type. Fashion nova takes too long to come and I’m in Canada. Shien comes in a week and my stuff is actually nice.
I have purchased items from shein and the quality was amazing.
Lmao. Compared to what?
So you were lucky. They work online you cannot check quality like in case of buying froom store (if stiches are even or if clothes don't smell like coins if they do they used heavy metals and therefore you can throw the thing out) and they don't give you refund. I hope ot doesn't become a norm.
They deserve it for being modern, wide ranged, inclusive, tastefull, all in one place, eficient and have the best costumer experience ever.
They are extremely damaging to the environment and even to your health, their clothes contain high level of lead
Yeah. Shein has so many different fashions that almost everyone will find something that they like. In the USA, you can only find certain styles in a certain store, which means you need to jump from one site to the next or walk from store to store.
SHEIN are dominating because they know how to use data to give us what we want, their prices are extremely affordable and they have amazing marketing techniques. Also I’ve realised that majority of their things they restock fast! I’ve had a few things on my Wishlist that I’ve missed and they were restocked within 4 weeks which is very fast for fashion.
They dominate because they have excellent recycling facilities so they recycle plastic into different garments sooner than anyone else. What we wear is 99% made from plastic rubbish from China
As much as I try not to buy when I don't need it - SHEIN's quality sometimes are far better than zara or hm... I used to be an avid loyalist of Zara a few years back - then I started noticing the decline in quality, fabric, stitching... Then I discovered shein before it became such a boom like it is now, compared their shirts and dresses to some Zara purchases, and made me so turned off about purchasing items from Zara.. Over priced, cheap quality and cheap fabrics they use.. Just now hoping Shein would be more sustainable by using less new production of textiles.
I don't like shein's ultra fast fashion or possible child labor. But because ZARA/Inditex isnt any better on their labor sourcing, Imt ok with SheIn either hurting Zara or forcing them to improve, both pricing and labor problems.
Idk, if you go into Zara stores, it's definitely better than what Shein puts out there
Same. I noticed that too but with a big name brand.
the idea behind ‘copying’ from luxury brands does sound lowkey stupid to middle class people who cannot afford such items but that shouldn’t lead us to the cheapest fast fashion store. copying from someone else or being influenced to do something particular isn’t bad at all. even shakespeare borrowed the key story line of most of his plays from previous playwrights but what made him different was that he didn’t just put out whatever for the sake of writing something. though his ideas weren’t original, there’s no denying that they were appealing and of quality. What is more is that even he wrote for middle class people who couldn’t afford the luxuries that upper class people were busy with such as politics. If you compare his work and the fashion today, there’s not much difference considering that luxury brands as well target celebrities and rich population only. Sure their work is ‘art’ and needs to be valued but they never bothered to cater to the masses and so they will never have the rights to complain against fast fashion which actually does work for the masses. However, like shein, most fast fashion brands exploit human rights and make terrible quality things. now obviously you can’t expect world’s best quality while you’re paying $3 but what people can do is thrift and buy a few fairly priced clothes from little boutiques that do care for what they produce instead of buying a multiples of $3 shirts which they’re not even gonna use to the full life. if shein or any fast fashion brand wants to be respected for their work, they must cater to all the factors. human exploitation should be stopped including ripping off people for lowest quality items like zara does.
When you buy Shien you directly put money in the pockets of an evil state that is threatening the security and livelihood of many countries as we speak. Buying from Zara or H&M, in spite of all its issues, is benign compared to that. The matter is more that price and quality.
@@nuanced8225 Congratulations your media has you mind-controlled and acting as their agent.
@@nuanced8225 H&M, Zara all use sewing factories in China. The majority of the fabrics they use are also from China. When you buy from those brands, you also indirectly put money in the pocket of that “evil state”. So many products outside of fashion are also made in China, or use materials sourced from China.
Yeah. Zara are well known for this where they copy luxury brands because it saves them time and money since they don't need to hire designers to do it.
Sounds smart to me. I would rather wear knockoffs of the expensive clothes for a cheap price
I got a SHEIN ad just before watching this ;-;
I like Shein for the simple fact there’s more variety for plus size people like me. I’ve tried to shop more “ethically” with expensive brands but rarely saw my size in styles I like. So, I resort to thrifting and sites like Shein, Asos etc that include clothing sizes for everyone 🤷♀️
You can be guaranteed that if you order 10 pieces of clothing from Shein, nine out of 10 of them will not be as pictured on the model, or its the same, but oddly- ill fitting, or the fabric is not what you expected. Skip Shein save your hard earned $$$!!
Facts, I hate that everyone is buying there now. It used to be just a few ppl and it should have stayed that way
Yeah, that’s not true. But then again, I suppose if your buying the lower end stuff. MOTF 91% silk items are really well made.
Not me tho.I mostly liked all of my clothes.. or maybe because I'm too poor that I don't know the real quality of the higher end clothes
I bought twice from there, after carefully reading the reviews and checking the measures. My clothes fit perfectly.
Honestly I had stopped shopping from zara in the past years because their clothes were all weird, they were all big and short and looked like shhyt on me
You dumb? Look at the product ratings.
