Watching this video brings so much joy to my heart. I am so delighted that I am not the only person in this world that cares about squirrels! I am going to attempt to make this house for my back yard squirrels. Thanks for sharing
That's not a squirrel "house", it's a squirrel mansion ! I love the design, and can't wait to build one. Thanks for sharing this, and thank you from the many squirrels on my property. I think I'm gonna need more than one though....🤣
Hands down best squirrel home I’ve ever seen. I build some of my own too. Thanks for the inspiration! You solved a years long problem of how to make a hole-shaped entry!!
This is THE BEST squirrel house design I've ever seen, and your how-to is so easy to follow. Thank you so much for sharing!! Absolutely wonderful. ❤️🤗❤️
Thank you for this video.Just what I wanted to make for a family of 3 and babies just born. The heavy wind took her nest.she moved into a small bird house but, needs a bigger one thats safe from the Hawks,Hopefully I finish tonight.
It’s good that you have two floors because raccoons can put their hands in the nest and grab adults and babies which is why many people put a little ledge at inside opening so squirrel can go under small ledge and raccoon can’t reach under ledge but with your squirrel mansion, the squirrels can be safe at the bottom level, out of reach from predators with long arms.
yeah. thats a great idea. will be a making a different one soon, and will try that. but to be honest, i wasnt planing to lean or mess with their setup. let the little guys work on it :)
Thanks for this! I'm making one, with my 12 year old daughter, this weekend. I already had a design in my head, but it's basically what you are doing, so this is great.
Wow! 👍I am building bird houses now and started a big squirrel house. Your work is impressive. 💯I like how you came up with designing the porch ledge as all one piece.💚 I can now understand just how tricky it is to find a solid place to put the squirrel house. Some vids use construction screws drilled into the tree. I am trying not to do that because it doesn't feel like a "nice" thing to do to the living tree. If I find some thick solid branches I would consider sitting the house on that and using rope to hang it up for additional support. Thank you for taking the time to show us your work.💯 Editing and producing a youtube vid is dedication in itself. 🇨🇦
Appreciate the feedback. Thank you! and yeah, I try avoid using the screws into the tree when possible as well. But want to be sure its secure and doesn't fall down during high winds. especially with babies in there.
@@HowToWithLech After watching your video last night, this morning I went to work to add a covered porch. I also added a platform on the inside of the entrance hole to make it more difficult for raccoons to get at the babies. Also added some strips of wood on the inside of entrance wall so that the babies can practice climbing up to the platform which gets them to the entrance hole. Very pleased with the outcome of the squirrel house. Nice to have viewed your video beforehand though. I put it on an apple tree where there was an open space big enough for it to rest in. Then used rope to secure it. I used 3.5 inch screws on smaller branches underneath it, 3 in total, to secure it better. At least I didn't drill into the trunk of the tree but only through a few of the bigger branches. Still tricky to figure out a good spot to place a huge squirrel home without damaging the tree too badly :) Keep up the good work! Stay safe as we work through the pandemic to master herd immunity! Cheers from Canada
@@HowToWithLech Thanks. I have been looking at Owl nesting homes to build. Same principle to have an inside ladder on the inside of the entrance wall for the babies to practice climbing up to the entrance hole. Quite a big nesting home when building an Owl home! Need the owl to keep the little critters around my home which is nestled in the forest. Pandemic meant time to organized the basement workshop, so now it makes it more pleasant to get these fun projects done for wildlife. Looking for the silver lining from this Pandemic eh! :) Again, thanks for your video. Cheers from Canada.
Awesome build. I've been looking for plans, and I think I'm going to model something after your house. The only thing that concerns me is the weight. With 3/4 ply that house has to be heavy. How did you attach it to the tree?
Yeah. With the plywood. That size is heavy. But you can use lighter wood. It’s just what I had handy. I have it sitting on a branch. Plus connected 2X2 on the back to attach to tree too. The green smaller one I made was lighter. That was easier to mount.
Amazing house! Is it possible to open it to clean it also? I was thinking that the house must get dirty and attract flies after some time with squirrellbabies?
Would have to unscrew. I don’t mess with it. It have not seen flies etc. Looks like they are staring to make a nest for this spring now. I’m going to build another one soon , smaller design. Maybee I’ll try to make it easy to open.
Absolutely love this design. Both of yours turned out beautiful, with all the detail wonderful paint job as well. I am attempting to do one myself. Wish me luck I do have a question at 2:53 you stated at 12 in the middle. Did you mean 18?
@@HowToWithLech okay I got everything measured up exactly like yours. One problem I made my 20 degree angled cut on my side walls on the wrong side! I don't have the extra wood to correct it. What could I do to compromise takeoff how much of the base floor? It's just a smidge but damn is going to throw me off
I did it!!! My first too I so proud of myself. You inspired me with your video I owe you a big thank you. Sitting and watching the squirrels is really something I enjoy thoroughly I have not gotten it up in the tree yet. I know I'm supposed to be facing it south or Southeast but I got these new neighbors that moved in and they are neighbors from hell and I don't think it's fair that my squirrel house faces them and I don't get to watch him LOL I know that sounds horrible
@@jonettehoward9164 thats awesome. congrats. i wasnt aware you're suppose to face it in a specific direction. i just faced mine towards my house so can have a front view :)
Did snow blow in there in winter? I am about to build something similar and I was thinking of putting what others call a predator guard, a piece of wood in front of the hole, so that snow or wind wouldn't blow in too easily.

yes!!
Like I always say, when you care.....it shows !!! Thank you for what you do,....

great video, I am going to make one just like it!😀
Awesome 👍
I am loving this but can you make them with a protected front so animals can't scoop their hand in and kill the squirrels?
Should be mounted pretty high up. But yes. Can put about 3” wide board. About 3” from opening. That should do the trick.
I LOVE IT!!!
🙃👍
Awesome job.
Thank you
