My Grandmother died in that hospital, Waited in the waiting room for over 7 hours while having a heart attack.. They closed up because you couldn't get any service in time to save your life..
Yup nothing can stop a grandma hex lol Also sorry about your loss I lost one of my honestly best friends (we had a relationship like you'd see in sitcom lol) my memaw two years and change ago now and it still kinda hurts sometimes honestly.
that steams me that the company could cut and run and no one has any liability for all those patient records, HIPPA has been in place since 1996, so that's COMPLETELY illegal for them to abandon those records.
Patient records left behind happens all the time in abandonment - with no one making any effort to stop it - Not a big crime when it comes to other more serious issues that cannot be fixed.
HIPPA violations would make the hospital subject to various federal fines. The hospital is defunct. Who the heck are they going to go after? So, yeah…technically illegal because it violates a federal statute, but if there is no one to hold accountable, there are no repercussions.
I can't say it enough, Jake, your voice can take even a boring subject and make it interesting. This is not boring, being a midwestern boy myself I always love to hear stories of abandoned facities throught the region I call home. Keep up the great work! Keep entertaining and educating at the same time. I am surprised a major docuentary house has not snapped you up to be a narrator for their documentaries.
Agreed. My dad always wanted to explore abandoned buildings with me as a kid in NW Arizona (Kingman). We had plans but he got a job offer in central Indiana in 1990 when I was 10. Your dedication and info remind me of those days. Keep up the great work.
As both a native Metro Detroiter and a fan of your show, your Michigan content has been on point. Think we'll see more stuff from our area? Maybe the Michigan State Fairgrounds, Joe Louis Arena, or the former Hudson's building? Keep coming back to the D - we're always happy to have you!
I admire him trying to sell the product, but seriously how convoluted can it be to throw a couple razors in the cart when buying groceries? I laughed at that.
I used to work downtown, for the past few years I've passed this building almost every day and I've always been curious about it. Thank you for making a video on it Jake!
There are many UA-cam videos on this abandoned hospital. One that comes to mind showed the director of the hospital office, looking very much like he left in a hurry, leaving behind all his personal items and family photos. Anyway, no surprise on all those patient medical records being left behind. On many UA-cam videos, that seems to be the norm. I have see photos and videos in Detroit, when libraries are closed and all the books are still on the shelves. But Detroit does not have a lock on abandonment, other big cities have there own problems.
Somewhat of a happy update on the property. It is going to be the new site of the Detroit City Football Club stadium. So in the end, the land shall be repurposed and the original structure demolished. It just came up as recent news and I recalled your video covering this space. Thanks for the education on this property. Best wishes on the future use of the space to the football club.
QB Mac none of you know anything about Detroit. Ok so Southwest is one of the only nicer lest drug insfested areas in Detroit. Almost no blacks mostly Mexicans just trying to work
So... we're just gonna blame everything on black people instead of recognizing all the factors that goes into things like this? And Africa isn't solely black people's fault, thats thanks to colonization and exploitation from foreigners.
I’m from Toledo, Ohio, just an hour south of Detroit. I’ve driven up 75 North right past where this building is and have never noticed it. So really interesting to learn of its history and matter. Thank you Jake for making this great video, well done!
Please PLEASE never rid yourself of this intro. It is one that gets stuck in the head and it is just so addicting. Keep up the good work. Awesome channel
I just went into a Toys R Us Express today and It was still stocked full with toys, but the prices.....I can see why they shut down...I still remember playing the Spongebob Squarepants Movie video game in the section where you can play the game [those were the days..] at a Toys R Us as a kid and that place was awesome. I can only hope they either go online, or just come back in maybe 10-20 years (the latter is severely unlikely, but I CAN DREAM, OKAY?!)
Really enjoyed this. Probably one of the best Abandoned videos in the series I have seen. I loved the before and after pics. It really paints of picture of how nice the building once looked, and how awful it looks now. Nice job!
Came for the the episode of Abandoned (FAVE!) Stayed for the hilarious DSC ad. It gave me a good laugh. Thanks Jake! (Also, I concur with DSC. I've been a member since 2015. Good stuff!)
I am so happy you covered this. I always wondered about this building. It always gave me the creeps. There’s plenty of abandoned things in Detroit but nothing looks like this building.
I honestly cant stop watching these abandoned videos. They are just so fun and informative to watch, when you got nothing to watch I usually watch these to pass time. Keep up the videos! Definitely got a new subscriber here!

+thejman36 Right. I agree. plus money has to come from somewhere to pay for the storage and bandwidth. It's not free. Neither is the content created. Plus the razers are pretty decent.
Pear CD Agreed. Hey, idk if you guys like roller coasters, but would you mind checking out my channel as I'm trying to get to 1K subs so I can start my monetization back up, but I already have the 4,000 hours of watch time so yeah.
my mom told me when she was younger that she was in a group of friends and they wanted to go vandalize the hospital and break stuff. obviously my mom declined and found out they got busted. so good for her ig👏
I subbed in late to early 2017 and I’m still entertained usually i find a channel I subscribe and i stop watching, but I’m still watching. So keep up the good work!
OMG JAKE THANKS!!! I sent you this reccomendation so long ago!!! this is why i always rely on this channel for my abandoned urbex fix! You always give us the most optimal videos! THANK YOU JAKE
I really enjoy the way you dive into the details and history in your videos. The information and presentation really make it enjoyable to watch. Thanks for your work!
This series is fantastic. I hope to see many many more for years to come. You and those that directly help produce your content are truly experts of the craft.
This series would be such a great show for Netflix! I also love all your videos on the state I grew up in, Michigan. As sad as it is to see the decay that’s happening there it’s interesting to find out the cause. Thanks for making such entertaining videos!
No-one would allow people onto a dangerous property, therefore you would need to trespass. As this is illegal Netflix would not be able to condone this. Probably also not a smart move for Jake to promote an advertiser on his channel when he is illegally trespassing on the hospital grounds.
it's always so fascinating and sad at the same time, to know why places are abandoned. You always do such an amazing job in your videos! keep them coming! :D
Postscript to the video. The hospital is as of Spring 2024 the proposed site of a new soccer stadium for the local pro team. The location is in the Corktown area of Detroit which is getting a revival.
Apologies for the following comment being extremely long about an abandoned Hospital but it was the last place that I saw my mother alive. I've been carrying this inside for decades now. I've told a few people about the above in bits and pieces over the years but never as complete as I have now. Just have to get it off my chest I suppose. It seems Southwest closed sometime after May in 1991 which is when my mother passed. I remember when she was still holding on I walked out of the front door and made a couple of lefts (I remember going through some sort of fence and walking down a small street somewhere) where there were small houses in the area. While walking I was reading a pocket Bible I stopped suddenly and saw what I thought was a miracle verse (don't remember the verse). Some guy standing by a car in a driveway saw me and said 'you found something huh?' I said 'yeah' and I rushed back to the hospital thinking by reading this verse to my mother she would get better however her time to leave this world was nearing and she knew it . Though she was extremely spiritual as I read the scriptures and others to her she shook her head "no" as if to tell me she knew. To this day I've had this gnawing feeling that there were strange circumstances concerning my mother's demise. The doctor's told me in order to save her they would have to, in their words, "break open her chest" and perform some type of operation. They said it would be really devastating to her. The heart-wrenching way that they described it they probably were pretty sure that I wouldn't agree to something like that. But at that time I wasn't thinking about the pain and discomfort this surgical procedure could cause my mom but only about saving her life (how selfish I was). I told them if that's what they had to do then do it. Next thing I knew over the course of days her life ebbed away. Maybe now hearing and reading about Southwest going into bankruptcy, maybe it wasn't cost effective for them to keep her alive. At the same time today I'm thinking that either the doctors "conspired" to just let her die instead of trying to save her or maybe they got the consent from my older late sister to cut the respirator. Guess I'll never know. After some time had passed, months maybe years, I began to feel that something was wrong with that. However it wasn't until years later that I realized that maybe my mom wanted to go peacefully because once she tried to write something to us on a piece of paper but she was so weak neither of us could read it. Then a few times she made the scissors cutting sign with her fingers. Of course my sister and I, well at least I didn't, know then what she meant by that. For some reason "We" thought she was making the symbol of the number 2 which I couldn't figure out. So that's the way it went and here I am today still wondering about the decision(s), if any, at Southwest Detroit Hospital.
Oh my goodness. The man that found the body in ice is my uncle! He is an artist that does sculptures made mainly of found materials around Detroit. His name is Scott Hocking!
I subscribed to your channel a long time ago but only watch sporadically and I feel like I mostly had it on as background at my job, so when I saw the video on Centralia (one of my personal obsessions) I decided to binge watch the whole Abandoned playlist It started out rough and for a while I was about ready to abandon this channel. But I have to say, you have definitely improved from the early days and I am very much enjoying the videos now. It is obvious you do a lot of research and I like your abandoned series because even though you aren't there in person, I like having the history of the locations even more than seeing personal footage. A lot of the urban explorers just walk through and film things, sometimes speculating on what different things may have been used for, and really nothing else. I really like the fact that you have the backstory, possible plans for the future, all of the information of not only the locations but also the entire company (such as in the retail locations). I like the fact that you have pictures and videos that show the places in their heyday, and the pictures and videos that you use when describing what was going on at the time in history are so spot on. Your channel has developed so much, it is such a pleasure to watch at this time. Thanks for the great job! I definitely will not be abandoning this channel! Oh, and just so you know the diversity of your audience, I have a grandson that is almost your age! So I'm a tough audience, and you've won me over.
Losing retail stores (ie. indoor malls, strip malls, etc.) will have an enormous effect on the economy, similar to the loss of heavy industry in the United States during the 70s, 80's and 90's. These businesses employ tens of thousands of people. Furthermore, internet related jobs ( like e-bay, amazon, etc.) will NOT fill the employment gap - these industries only need a small fraction of comparative manpower to run their operations. This along with automation in these and other fields will cause an terrible economic shock to the middle and lower classes in the future. This is an obvious outcome to and obvious trend that virtually no-one is talking about today.
Love your passion for this Jake taking us back in time and give us the history we need to save some of these places in anyway we can I live not far from the old abandoned Chippawa Lake Amusement Park in Ohio
honestly, i think your channel stands out from a lot of channels similar. you’re a phenomenal narrator, you don’t use the same boring, repetitive voice in every video. your videos are very intriguing, unique, and i actually end up learning something by the end without wanting to claw my eyes out. ive been a fan for a while now and always watch when you show up on my sub box. keep up the great work BSF :)
This is one of the few abandoned videos you’ve done that didn’t include the structure at least striving for a while... it sound like it was doomed to began with.... great video and superb quality
Since you visited Detroit, I hope you checked out the Michigan Central Station! My favorite abandoned building here! There’s a very interesting history behind it and the building itself is absolutely beautiful. It would make for a great episode... ;) great work!!!
Fantastic episode sir. Happy for the continued growth of the channel, so well deserved. Also who doesn’t love when Daddy Number 1 & Daddy Number 2 get together for shenanigans? 😂😂😍😍😏. The ad was hilarious and cute haha. Cheers
Absolutely amazing brother !!!!!!! Makes my whole day seeing that you have uploaded!!!! You are seriously growing soooo much and making such amazing videos brother
I grew up in Southwest Detroit. That was the hospital EMS took you to if you weren't going to make it. If they said they were taking you there, you were a goner.
Thank you I have seen this building for years and never took a second thought to think about its past while going through Detroit Great video definitely some great history even within the abandoned buildings
My Grandmother died in that hospital, Waited in the waiting room for over 7 hours while having a heart attack.. They closed up because you couldn't get any service in time to save your life..
Wow, I would be hot as fuck over that.
I’m so sorry about your Grandmother
Yup nothing can stop a grandma hex lol
Also sorry about your loss I lost one of my honestly best friends (we had a relationship like you'd see in sitcom lol) my memaw two years and change ago now and it still kinda hurts sometimes honestly.

This a a good reason to shut it down

aeonjoey HIPAA* (sorry that’s a pet peeve of mine) but you’re absolutely right.
Patient records left behind happens all the time in abandonment - with no one making any effort to stop it - Not a big crime when it comes to other more serious issues that cannot be fixed.
Ya, anywhere else it would of been a different story.
It’s only illegal if you can’t pay the authorities to not make it so
HIPPA violations would make the hospital subject to various federal fines. The hospital is defunct. Who the heck are they going to go after? So, yeah…technically illegal because it violates a federal statute, but if there is no one to hold accountable, there are no repercussions.

Agree. i tend to watch /listen to these videos while i work. soothing voice

Yeah, it was quite a susprise to see him on camera

It’s insane to me that they could leave all of those patient medical records behind.

Madeline DeJonge don’t worry! They have been dead for years.
I was in this building a while back, and that entire fourth floor is incredible. You literally wade through piles of patient records on the floor.
If you had worked there and you were told it was your last day, what would you have done? Take the records with you? 🤔
honestly the best ad i've ever seen, you're the freakin man as always jake
Alix would have been better in the old version only the Snapchat people will get this though
Chris Pearaon Joke not funny
I get more excited for brightsunfilms uploads than any tv show
It has the production value of a television special
Agreed
So true

I live outside of Detroit, so this one's quite a bit more closer to home than most of your other videos, awesome video as usual! ^^
An abandoned building?
In Detroit?
nooo...
QB Mac
That's pretty normal around here, sadly.
QB Mac none of you know anything about Detroit. Ok so Southwest is one of the only nicer lest drug insfested areas in Detroit. Almost no blacks mostly Mexicans just trying to work
And people moved to the "sun belt", which made things worse
Nice 🤔
So... we're just gonna blame everything on black people instead of recognizing all the factors that goes into things like this? And Africa isn't solely black people's fault, thats thanks to colonization and exploitation from foreigners.

Next episode of Abandoned: Toy R' Us...
Switch Speedster shitttt that would be sad
Yes
Toys R Us was my childhood growing up, I even went to their Times Square store a few times before it closed
I am so happy you covered this. I always wondered about this building. It always gave me the creeps. There’s plenty of abandoned things in Detroit but nothing looks like this building.
Do toysrus next. Loved this one
M&H Racing omg I’ve seen your vids b4
Well once they close, the buildings have to be abandoned for a while so we need some time until that video
Toys R Us = Originally Bargain Town
Yes man
TheRandomgamer yea but what the hell is he gonna show for the decay?
You really do deserve your subscribers. These videos are amazingly informative and are so interesting to watch. Keep it up :)
You would think that would be illegal.

Emily Halpin true. Have you also looked at The Proper People and This Is Dan Bell? Those are my other two go-to ones.
Marie B Yeah! I really enjoy Dan bell's videos, I will have to check out The Proper People x
I get SO excited when I see a new BSF video pop up. Right after work on Friday too 😎
great video Jake as always very interesting
Hi
This video legit felt like an episode of a tv show on discovery or the history channel. Keep up the good work.
I honestly cant stop watching these abandoned videos. They are just so fun and informative to watch, when you got nothing to watch I usually watch these to pass time. Keep up the videos! Definitely got a new subscriber here!
Great as always Jake!
Wow Detroit could give you a lifetime of videos, that whole town is one big urban graveyard.
Yup kinda like Newark nj
Can’t have shit in Detroit
have you ever visited downtown detroit? clearly not. i’ve lived here my entire life and the city is just getting better and better.
@@samanthahammond1795 Living Downtown was much better and funner when it was dank and depressing. It's too douchey now. Especially that awful pizza arena that ruined our neighborhood.
Gotta love successful liberal policies 😂
Best start to the weekend, new BSF video!!
Great video! Reminded me of your old video on the hotel. I like the videos about the small unknown abandoned buildings you might pass by on the highway. It really shows how even the smallest things can have the richest histories.
Please share some of your favorites! Would really love to binge watch on abandoned stuffed during quarantine 👍👍
As always fantastic. Every new video from you is a prized treasure to relish and rewatch over and over. Keep up the great work!
New sub here.. I enjoy all your thorough details of history on these sites..keep up the great work..I'm a watcher now.💜
Oh how I've missed this on a Friday afternoon.
Lol I loved the shaving ad! As always great job with all the research you do, you're a great story teller!
One of your next videos should cover abandoned Olympic parks and facilities!
Ok Jake, I see you getting these sponsors.
Heck yeah, I would monetize this stuff too.

2020 update: we've hit a medium, we're currently all dying
2218: internet is dying
Puggpoo It won’t, we will always need medication
More places to turn into good indoor paintball arenas.

You look great with or without the stubble! Love the videos. Perfectly satisfies my need to nerd out about architecture AND history.
Love your passion for this Jake taking us back in time and give us the history we need to save some of these places in anyway we can I live not far from the old abandoned Chippawa Lake Amusement Park in Ohio
Great work man, you must be so much effort into researching all of these. Most interesting videos I’ve seen on the internet keep it up!
Another good video, it's crazy how vandals, and just time of mother nature can just rip apart a building.
Love your channel! And I've been wanting to try Dollar Shave Club so you gave me the perfect opportunit. Thanks! Keep up the great work!
I’m so obsessed with these videos!!
this is one of my favourite series on youtube cause your voice is so soothing and calming idk
Content just gets better! What a difference from your old videos to new in how you present, keep it up
This is totally unconscionable! For a facility that's supposed to care for people did the exact opposite in such a short time is hideous!!
honestly, i think your channel stands out from a lot of channels similar. you’re a phenomenal narrator, you don’t use the same boring, repetitive voice in every video. your videos are very intriguing, unique, and i actually end up learning something by the end without wanting to claw my eyes out. ive been a fan for a while now and always watch when you show up on my sub box. keep up the great work BSF :)
This is one of the few abandoned videos you’ve done that didn’t include the structure at least striving for a while... it sound like it was doomed to began with.... great video and superb quality
this was amazing in every way. especially the last bit! I knew about your struggles from snap but it definitely came together in the end. hilarious!
I really appreciate it!
Cheers
Great Video, smooth editing! Better than all the current competition out there making videos.
Looks like a fun place to set a rainbow 6 siege map in!
Actually it would be fun to set any sort of modern military conflict in
Detroit is already a warzone lmfao
Love seeing new videos from you in my feed I always learn something new
omg this sponsorship is so cute and creative!!! I almost like it better than the video!! (not really though)
Haha thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it, we put a lot of time and work into making it the best it could be!
Glad you picked up a sponsor keep abandoned alive!

In my fictional world, this hospital never gets abandoned and still operates
Man I can't wait to see the next video. But take your time on it. no what rush I'm patient.
Every other Friday, I PROMISE!
Absolutely amazing brother !!!!!!! Makes my whole day seeing that you have uploaded!!!! You are seriously growing soooo much and making such amazing videos brother
I love how you're shaving in an abandoned hospital that was once a victim of segregation.
I grew up in Southwest Detroit. That was the hospital EMS took you to if you weren't going to make it. If they said they were taking you there, you were a goner.
I think ether soon or in a few months once it's done and over with, a Toys R Us episode is in order
PokemonMaster 026 bsf tweeted about that.
Thank you I have seen this building for years and never took a second thought to think about its past while going through Detroit Great video definitely some great history even within the abandoned buildings
Can you do Abandoned Sports Authority or Toys R Us
Your videos just get better and better! Love you Jake!
I use to go to work with my mom when i was younger my mom is in the first photo 2:29 the first women in the photo
It's crazy how fast they can construct buildings, but when it comes to getting rid of one it takes forever.
