- Ah yes, my whole childhood of spending hours upon hours looking for that one movie they never had. A huge part of our recent culture, and one of the most spectacular modern bankruptcies, Blockbuster was the best.

"A guy in the 90's got a $40 in late fees for not returning his movie on time. So he got back at the company by starting netflix"
Top 10 Anime Villain Origin Stories
Btw if you didn't listen to the easy to follow rules you kinda deserve that shit tho
Lol
Why did one guy type a paragraph for a reply? xD
Well, in my opinion, especially towards the last few years, the stores I went to developed different renting rules as time passed, trying to squeeze more profit from customers, which was at least partially achieved with that complexity. And, more than once I firmly believed I was charged an unjust late fee - when I rented and returned multiple movies all on the same days, but wasn't credited as having done so. Finally, the lines got long, popular movies and games were out, employees became rude, and prices went up. Mostly though, BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE killed Blockbuster.
QuesoGr7 i can imagine 2 ways we could stop the rise of netflix before it started by going back in time 1 is convincing blockbuster to buy netflix 2 is straight up destroying netflix headquarters
fuck netfilx
yet Netflix still doesn't have that one movie you want to watch.
Yup...they also removed doctor who which pissed me off, i canceled my subscription
Yea. Thats why i like hulu better
+Milo Simpson well they put it on amazon video which is slightly more convenient because i have an amazon prime account already so its there for me to use
It has a lot to do with what they can license to stream. A lot of videos can still be rented as DVDs.
They probably couldn't stream the doctor anymore. The license expired.
i'm just pissed Netflix doesn't have the Simpsons. not too much on doctor who.
Imagine getting a $40 fee and getting your revenge by starting a billion dollar company and putting the one that scammed you out of business
Ingenuity at its best
How did they scam him? Bring the stinking movie back on time.
@@mattstorm6568 I wrote this comment 4 months ago so idk what I was on about then lmao, but they took his money so he took their business
And then making a documentary about the last one 😂
Netflix had late fees for years. That late-fee-at-Blockbuster story is a myth.
Kids today will never experience the wonders of stepping into a Blockbuster on a Friday night
Remember those overpriced candy tins of Mario and sonic stuff?
@@iron1975 overpriced? They were essential items
And the thrill of sneaking a peek at the R rated movies at the store XD now they just watch it online anyway
Also remember the card jitsu cards from club penguin?
Yup. One Of The Greatest Feelings Of My Young Adolescent Life
"That'll be $40 please"
"I'll be back for your whole company, just you wait"
From that point on, he took it personal.
That is the ultimate revenge
😂 oh God I laughed so hard
Sounds like something I'd do. Spite has always been a good motivator.
A bit like the story of the undertaker, that had a competitor whose wife worked at the telephone switchboard. She routed call's to his business to her husbands funeral business.
That made him so cross, that he invented the automatic switchboard, effectively killing off a whole trade of switch operators.
I bet, that lady, was not well liked among her colleagues when they found out, her actions was indirectly what cost them, their jobs.
I miss the feeling of walking into blockbuster and renting a movie or game
Also my blockbuster was replaced by a 7-11
I also miss it, but let's be honest, Netflix is just far better in terms of efficiency and pricing. Still miss it though, regardless.
Same here. At first I resented it putting our local video stores out of business but after accepting that was the way of things, I miss looking through the DVDs and videogames for discounted used titles or giving that odd title a try when the new releases were all out. The space where our Blockbuster was has been vacant for well over seven years.
my blockbuster was replaced by a men's warehouse YEARS later.
I don't miss it at all. It was annoying as hell and blockbuster never had enough stock of the new release movies. Which resulted in wasted gas and disappointment.
It's been at least 16 years since I walked into a Blockbuster, but I can somehow still remember the smell of one.
I haven't been in one since 2009. Oh man, i miss the 90s and 00s.
Body oder lol
Bruh same 😂
It sucks that some of the best stores went bankrupt but in their prime they dominated the market but it all went downhill
I wasjisy thinking about that
I was a manager for Family Video before their multi-store closure. It broke my heart to lock the door behind me for the last time. I can hardly bring myself to drive by the empty store. Love your content, Jake. Keep up the good work!
Ah yes. I too worked at Family Video. We managed to become the last video rental store chain to remain open…until Covid killed us :/
Family Video was lightyears better than Blockbuster. Porn and Unrated/NC-17 editions plus lots of of weirder films (The EVIL DEAD movies were out of print for most of the 90s and Blockbuster didn't have them usually because they weren't rated) made it THE go-to for me.
Lucky: ❤️ oldies movies & rv shows :
My brother used to work at one in the 90s. He loved it a lot. This is so sad.
I remember when Blockbuster started integrating DVDs into their VHS collections. Who also remembers those stickers on the counters that said "Be Kind, Rewind" LOL.
I asked them for one of those stickers 20 years ago, I still have it on my old PS1 lol
*rent tape*
*it isn't rewound*
I had a dedicated VHS rewinder that did it faster than most VCRs. 😂 What a different time.

I still have my red '57 Chevy VHS rewinder. It looks like the real car and has the classic styling with the fins at the back. Today, it's more of a decoration than anything else, but it still works.
I guess someone at Blockbuster thought "streaming movies from the internet will never take off". lol
As late as 2007, lol.
Mick Mcmasters yep that turn out to be a mistake.
Mick Mcmasters Tower Records also thought people would want a record collection instead of free music downloads through the Internet.
I can confirm that at least for Blockbusters UK this was the exact thinking. We got told in a yearly company wide call that Netflix was not a threat and that it was a fad which would never take off.
I shit you not...I wish I had recorded that call and uploaded it online.
luketfer You never got any likes, just know that I appreciate and enjoyed your post :)
I remember how sad I was when the Blockbuster by my house closed. My family would go there on Fridays and I would ask for so many movies and my brother would always rent a video game and we would go get snacks and watch them at home. I still remember the exact layout of the store and where everything was. That place was everything to me.
Me too we had a movie gallery where I lived
i miss the way the store would smell. There was a certain smell of candy and plastic vhs covers.
I have amazing memories of my father and I as a young girl going and picking out a movie every Friday night while my mother worked the night shift. He would even let me pick out one of those ridiculously expensive snacks because it was about the experience. He just found his old blockbuster card in a very old wallet and I was in tears. What great memories this place holds for so many!
Yup!!! It was an event to kick off the weekend to pick out movies and treats and make damn sure you got it back in time to avoid those pesky late fees they could shake you down for next time you wanted to rent a movie. Oh yeah
If there's one thing I remember about Blockbuster, its the smell. Every one smelled the same lol
oh my gosh yes, it was like a plastic sort of smell.
I was going to say they all smelled like plastic and pop corn your right.
Wow I was looking for a comment like this! The smell is something I'll never forget
GameStop still smells like that. Reminds me a lot of blockbuster.
Zxibit and the candy
Blockbuster always had the movie I wanted to watch
Something Netflix still can’t get right
A... to the f'ing men!
Wanted*
You can always just buy the movie yourself, assuming it's not out of print.
Licensing deals exists, so you can’t expect every movie to be on Netflix. Even if you have to get Disney+, HBO Max, Prime Video, and/or Apple TV+ to see that one movie, it’s still cheaper and better than getting multiple cable TV packages. If you still want a movie that bad and it’s not on any of the aforementioned streaming services, then just rent or buy it somewhere else, digital or physical. Amazon, Ebay, Google Movies + TV etc
You are not wrong
Right same I wish block buster was still around Netflix and hulu dont have a large enough selection
I was lucky enough to have my kids when I did and able to take them to blockbuster before it shutdown. My family loved going to check out the movies while grabbing candy, popcorn and drinks. It was our weekend thing to do and I still miss it to this day. We had another local video place here and as a kid it was awesome to be able to rent games because we were poor. I miss those days & simpler times before tech made everything antisocial ❤️
Ry Ry ain’t nothing like it, just browsing and checking things out.
Blockbuster still exists! Seriously! Go to Bend Oregon And Come Back
It's odd cuz everyone says this, yet everyone got streaming and stopped going to stores. I never bought Netflix and went to the last video store in my area till the day it closed.
Another thing is most those streaming services just have new crap, mostly made by them, and they all gotta "check the boxes".
@@mattstorm6568 we always went to rent and never did the streaming until they closed. Not sure what you mean by your statement
@@ImAlwaysFrisky ? What was confusing about it? People stopped going to physical stores and instead got streaming, that's what caused rental stores to go out of business.
You personally may have kept going to stores, so did I, but most didn't yet they'll talk about how they miss rental stores as they fire up their streaming.
Was in my local liquor store the other day, and had a random memory pop up that made me realize that the liquor store used to be my local blockbuster video. Ah memories.
Bringing a movie in late was a class b felony at blockbuster.

I remember how it pissed off people by refusing to acknowledge its end to late rentals
I still have my blockbuster card 😭😭😭 it expired in like 2005

My husband and I rented so many movies one year they gave us gold card. We would get a free kids movie every time we rented a new release

I had one too. It expired 2004. I found it 2010 in my drawer. Keep forgetting to renew It.
The blockbuster I went to a few times when I was REALLY little has been turned into a really good pizza restaurant
Yo no way, the one up the road to me got turned into a dominoes pizza
The blockbuster close to my house closed years ago and is now Chase bank. I miss it so much.
@@Ayo-zv2ky dominos isnt good pizza
I remember usually renting from smaller video stores, paying usually around 5 bucks. The first time I rented from Blockbuster, I was shocked that the price was over 8 dollars. Still, I was really impressed by the staff, and loved how they greeted you when you came in.
I think there's only ONE Blockbuster in existence now, the other two stores in Alaska closed about a week ago.
this last blockbuster needs to be kept the way it should, or turned into the blockbuster museum
There's 3 in Australia.

I don't think people realize this but the feeling of listening to the radio, waiting for your favorite song to come on was the same one as walking into a Toys R Us or Blockbuster. There was no instant gratification back then. It may have taken hours but once your song finally played, it was the greatest feeling in the world and it never sounded better. Now, we have any movie, any song, any toy at our finger tips and can be delivered in seconds without leaving your house. Convenience? Absolutely. Better? Not so sure.
I was a employee from 2003 - 2011, bad decision making, when direct Tv bought them out they kept the same board of directors that continued the same bad decision making. They also tried to upstart gamestop which didnt do too badly until they put a bunch of marketers in charge of gaming instead of actual gamers. Bad game recommendations mounted and mounted just served as one more nail in the coffin. I worked between 2 stores in Indianapolis IN. Store 18527 on 56th and Georgetown if anyone cares. My store went out of business and less than 3 yrs later it became an O'Riley auto parts store, and the other store i believe became a Mattress outlet.
laziness killed the videostore
Nope. That wasn't it. It's simply the fact that when you are offered cheaper alternatives, without the late fees, you'd go for it. That and that if you actually browsed a Blu-Ray section of a physical store, chances are they'd be more worth it to buy and keep than to simply rent for a week. That's the case here in Australia with JB HI-FI. You come and look at the new gadgets, TVs and so forth, but end up buying a couple of Blu-Rays instead.
Piracy and broadband and dvd writers did.

I had no idea so many other 90's kids had the family-movie-night tradition on Friday nights.
Our family tradition was to always go to the local pizza place (Round Table Pizza) and then go two doors down to "Video Flicks" to rent a movie. Every. Friday. Night. We did that for many years. It was sad to see it empty after it closed. It's fascinating how times change and different generations share their nostalgia from their childhoods.
Wow, so Netflix was created because some asshole who was too lazy to return Apollo 13 on time.
Update: And you want to know the scariest thing about this is? This almost rewrites history. Imagine if he did returned Apollo 13, who knows what would've happened instead. Maybe Blockbuster would still be around now in the same video store format or evolved into the streaming service we have today.

There's still an abandoned Blockbuster in my town even now. I have to walk past it on the way to Sainsbury's and you can see through the window that the entire carpet is now covered in a layer of mould and moss.
Bethany Marsh that’s horrible D:
They didn’t boarded up the windows so you can still look at the dead store😔
Theres a whole holiday centre i used to go too called Butlins thats been abandoned for 17 years. It looks like a scene from an apocalyptic movie. About the moss.... butlins has all kinds of wildlife growing inside where rhe swimming pool and chalets were. All it takes is one wind dispersed seed and soon nature will reclaim a whole indoor area.
Bethany Marsh 😷 poor blockbuster
an old high school friend of mine and a few friends of his bought an old Blockbuster and turned it into a motorcycle shop. 😎😎
Streaming platforms are amazing... makes watching movies so incredibly easy but it will never be able to replace that nostalgic feeling I have when I think back to those Friday and Saturday nights.. Myself and my mom would make that trip to blockbuster, wed rent two movies and one game.. every weekend and it was something I looked forward to all week. A great way to bond with family. Get some popcorn, candy and spend the night enjoying entertainment and great company. I miss the 90s.

Ya what are you doing here big fan by the way
Sadly I was born too late to experience Blockbuster, but there was always a location near me that was untouched. They had taken down the sign and the store was clearly boarded off and shut, but they still had posters in the windows.
It was kinda sad to just watch the store decay, knowing I was never able to visit it, until about 2016 when it got refurbished into a new store. Oh well, at least I have hmv.
I remember moving to the Dallas area in 2010 and seeing the blockbuster headquarters, then the huge light up sign on the building being taken off, then the sign being set up against the building for a couple years before it was finally gone.
That's what you get for charging $40 late fee
now if it was $4, we would still have 9000 Blockbuster stores...
I still can't get over the fact that America president is a meme
That's right, kids.
Before "Netflix and Chill", we had to go outside and rent our movies.
And then chill.. I worked at a Hollywood video in my 20s and met plenty of women. I guess when you're lonely and bored and clicking around on Netflix you're not gonna meet the video store guy haha

Mine turned into a hot burritos place. There burritos are bad.
Mine got turned into a vitamin shop
So. Basically Blockbuster is dead because they overcharged a guy for late fees on a movie and he decided to found Netflix and kill blockbuster
It would have died even without Netflix. The technology was ready to be used to kill brick and morder video rental chains.
That pretty much sums it up
That same guy went to them and offered to run their online store if they gave him the capital to do his online video thing which would have been Blockbuster property but they turned him down and within a decade were outcompeted and brought down to eventual bankruptcy.

You should make an episode about Hollywood Video. At one point, for like 5 seconds, they were actually on top and more successful than Blockbuster.
I really miss physical videos paid in person in cash. now you have to sign up on some website put ur credit card info in and they may not have the videos ur looking for.
Do you know how much of a pain is it to drive 6 miles and spend 10 minutes looking for No Country For Old Men to learn that they don't have it.....or I could just type it in and waste much less money. Plus when you're done watching and have some time you could just find something good on Netflix

To each there own my fellow commenter. Just like the original commenter said i miss going to these stores. Every time a new copany offers something that people don't even have to leave there house for makes more people lazier and lazier even though there are a very select few groups of people that it would benefit.
As a younger person as in myself (31, almost 32) i enjoy going out in the world instead of being a recluse in this world. Sad thing is to that the more and more services that people don't have to go out for social skills will really be lacking which is the really sad part.
Im really hoping that before i die the U.S. does not become a wasteland of people barely or never going anywhere because they are to lazy to leave there perfect little fortress of solitude.

That's like the max amount of pettiness but I love it.
Also the reason we have Lamborghini sports cars. Enzo Ferrari pissed off Ferruccio and the rest is history
Kids these days dont understand the war the kids of the 80s and early 90s went through.
The console bit wars with the sore thumbs and broken friendships. Oh the horror!
Begging your parents on a Friday to take you to blockbuster to rent a game. All those NO's, still haunt me even today. DEAR GOD WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
I understand bro, and I'm just in the 8th grade.
I never had to rent games. I was a late 90s/early 00s kid, and I was lucky enough to own several gaming consoles.
It's funny because as I was watching this I was thinking, "Man, I'm only 27 and I can already think of so many things that existed during my childhood that my future kids will never get to experience." That feeling of Mom picking you up from school on Friday, taking you to Blockbuster to pick out a few movies, then going home and getting a pizza to eat in the living room while watching them.
It's also a total coincidence that earlier today I happened to come across an article about the Sea World they had here in Ohio. I had TOTALLY forgotten that there was ever a Sea World here (it closed when I was 10), but reading the article brought back very distinct, long forgotten memories of sitting inside the pavilion-type enclosure where Shamu's tank was and watching the show, as well as watching the water skiers perform on the lake. Now the hardcore liberals have forced Sea World to end their killer whale shows, meaning another experience from my childhood has been to added to the list of things that will never be experienced by my children.
I suppose this happens to every generation eventually, but I feel like the digital age and the rapid rise of technology, combined with the extremist-levels of political correctness in today's society has killed off SO MANY things we had as kids in just the past 10-15 years. Do you remember watching Ren and Stimpy or Rocko's Modern Life cartoons as a kid? Can you imagine shows like that being made for kids today? The outrage would be so strong that they would IMMEDIATELY be cancelled with an apology from everyone involved in making and airing the show.
Hell, I still remember having to go to the library to use a computer for school work. Now 10 year-old kids have fucking smart phones (although I will NEVER let my kids become cell-phone zombies, ESPECIALLY not before they even hit their teens). If we wanted to listen to music, we used a freakin' boom box to listen to the radio, or had to convince our parents to buy us a new cassette or CD. Now any song you want to hear is available for free on UA-cam. The times, they are a-changin'.
LordofFullmetal You were part of the elite. The rest of us Doughboys had to fight our way for the rentals!
LibertarianUSA1982 actually I was born 02 and I used to rent games with my older brother, but then they started shutting down which made me angry but then gamefly came out and then they fell, I don't know if they still exist, but my point here is that this generation has seen a blockbuster, maybe not the2004's
6 years later and I still come back to this and the Circuit City episode. Hard to say I remember watching this in my Student Center in college at the Chic fil A.
Now there’s is one Blockbuster left.
I miss blockbuster.. There was just something exciting about going with my friends to get a horror movie or comedy
Same.
Man I will never forget blockbuster like seriously that store was the shit and my childhood and There use to be one in Fordham road here in the Bronx ny USA and I use to go there all the time with my dad to rent movies and videos games and it's really a shame that the blockbuster video stores are gone now thanks to Netflix even though I love Netflix and its cheep and you get movies for free.
There was a blockbuster in Fordham road? Do you remember when it closed down? Can't believe I've found a Bronxite! :D
Yes there was and I think it closed down back in 2008 or 09 and it use to be across the street from the bank of America bank on grand ave now its a 99 cents store.
Ahh, don't frequent that area so I see why I don't really remember it, I only remember the one in Riverdale because I went to school around that area.
The most shocking thing in this video was that Happy Days remix. Was not prepared for that.
+Zoe Rosie Pretty good tho huh
that was traumatizing in itself. lol
it got me too Zoe Rosie
+Starbright1984
I see conspiracy and dead people and the shadows too. I shudder at night, shuddering. lol
lol
I remember early 2000s. My parents rented movies all the time back then. Somehow my mom got a $40 something late fee. She tried to dispute it and they refused to budge. She called corporate and they didn't care either. The manager basically said they didn't need her business. So they stopped using blockbuster. Amazing how you can be on top of the world and be gone so quickly
One big thing you missed was the shady business practices: Blockbuster regularly had to settle lawsuits over deceptive practices, fraud, and business law violations. Their main source of income for years was late fees, not sales, and they structured their business around maximizing these, often illegally. They kept changing the exact due point, at one point setting it at noon in order to confuse renters and increase late fees. I worked for a few months at a Blockbuster where the managers would regularly tell staff to not check in videos returned in order to increase late fees. They offered me a promotion, I quit rather than being a part of that kind of fraud.
and im the king of pluto. nobody quits instead of being promoted
considering they were a video RENTAL business, and not a video sale business, of course most of their profits came from late and rental fees, customers were only allowed to rent the videos & dvds for a certain period of time, that was the whole video rental business model, they did not sell the videos. The only things Blockbuster actually sold in their stores were drinks and snacks that people would often buy along with renting the videos. Blockbuster made alot of profit from the rental fees, but they also needed the late fees to subsidize their profits.
That Blockbuster at 10:33 might be the sketchiest one I've ever seen.
Lol true
Not to be that guy buuut.. *10:35 is what you meant.
Pirate
@@CubeWatch_ no he meant what he meant
282 Bank Street, Ottawa... it’s now a mattress store
BlockBuster: the store that only people from the 80s, 90s and early 2,000s remember
Jswave 34 True, Which is exactly what future generations will say about stores your generation enjoyed online or not when they go away.lol.
Jswave 34 I remember when I was little like, 5 (I was born in 04), I rented videos and games all the time with my older siblings. So I only knew it when it was on the verge of death. We actually have about 3 games we “stole” from Blockbuster, Mariokart Wii, some kind of Disneyland Kinect game, and a GameCube game or something.
Is 2006 early? I remember being in first grade and always asking my mom if we could go to Blockbuster so I could rent a new Lego video game for my PS3
Clutch Master I remember a movie renting company from 2008 when I was 3 so I don’t even know if it was blockbuster but I remember going and renting a movie for the weekend wen I was in preschool
U forgot the very early 2010s.
The sliver lining in the cloud is: we will continue call big budget movies, "blockbuster".
Went to the last Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon a few weeks back. It's a pretty normal Blockbuster, transports you right back to the 90's
my local blockbuster is now a pizza shop
JordPvP Raidz Mine became a matress store
JordPvP Raidz same. Mine is a Marco's Pizza
Mine is a bare bones
Mine was turned into a Mattress 1 store in League City.
Mine became a pet store and then that went out of business
Blockbuster shot themselves in the foot with that Netflix deal....
I mean, It was a gamble but with Internet growing more and more, it was inevitable... They should have realized it was a matter of time before people would stop renting movies and prefer staying at home...
At 7:47 was the literal blockbuster I used to go to in Oakville ON Canada! Take in there are still remnants of the old sign till this day but I completely forgot omg 😭😭
As of march 2020, theres is only 1 remaining blockbuster store
where is that?
@@TheSpikestr In Bend, Oregon
I honestly miss how things used to be I remember having to sit in front of the TV and rewind the VHS and the satisfaction of going to block buster to get a movie... gosh do I miss those days
I miss those days to and im 31
@@lafan2003 I'm 16 but I still rember it lol
The fact that I still do, we have vhs tapes everywhere but got rid of some of our old blockbuster dvds because idk dvds are trash and skip easy
I miss being a kid and being so excited for some reason to put the movie in the drop box. 😭😭
right me too 🥺
Blockbuster killed themselves.
1) Refusal to get with the times. They literally laughed off the idea of Redbox/Netflix.
2) Stupid and unreal late fees.
3) Rigid business model that allowed unlimited expansion, gobbling up the competition and not really diversifying.
In other words....basically all the points you touched on in the video.
Kids nowa days will never experience walking in with the fam experiencing that smell of the store , Spending hours trying to pick which movie or Video game ur gonna buy ! Damn times fly !!
Watching videos about the end of blockbuster is always bittersweet. I work at blockbuster for the last 5 years it was in existence. It was a really sad time. It was such a fun job and met a ton of great people. I loved working there and get sad every time i see the chipotle that now sits on the site of my last store
I still remember "Be kind, Rewind"
I miss block busters..... I liked those little machines that where only a quarter, and I would get these teeny tiny plush animals. I found one in my garage today :,)....
I still have one of those cards you'd get after getting an account at Blockbuster.
That's history now.
Came back to this because Blockbuster has made a surprising tweet after over 6 years being dormant on Twitter
I luckily have two DVDs from Bluckbusters, when they were closing.
Those late fees must be huge
Mr. J lol no. My mom bought them for me. I wish they proudly said "BlockBuster" on the dvd box. But sadly they don't. However, one does say it on the dvd itself!
I have about *4*
I have a couple
I got like 12 when my local one closed.
