  • A real speed demonstration of how I copy turn by hand a stair spindle. Hand woodturning produces the best crisp details. Also a little commentary of the process I go through as I do it. Let me know if you like the voice over or prefer just the turning.

And anyone who has turned knows that copying pieces like this is NOT easy to do. Like, at all. Nice job as always. Always a pleasure to watch you turn.

Voice over is good. And as you say not for instruction, but it is fascinating to watch what 30+ years of skill building looks like. Still inspirational for us hobbyist's. thanks for taking the time to post!

Here in the USA, when tuning replacement spindles on houses obvious built by the same builder hundreds of years ago, the balusters are never the same design. Everything in the house can be a mirror, but never the stair parts. I was wondering if it’s the same in the UK? Great turning thanks for the videos, your work, and how infrequently you need to go to calipers or dividers is amazing

Thank you, I’m the Uk we often get the same spindles in certain areas, roads. I often find I do the turning for old houses loft conversions and later have to do exactly the same spindles for other neighbouring homes that have loft conversions

Hi Steve, thanks for putting this video up. Your voiceovers are really helpful and add detail to what you are doing. I especially like the backhand anti vibration technic you use, such a skill made to look so easy.
If you dont mind me asking, I would really like to know how you sharpen your skews as I'm starting to get used to mine now but I haven't got the knack of getting them really sharp..
    As always.
    Thanks
    Dave

Hi Steve and sorry for the late reply.
Thanks for letting me know how you sharpen your skew. I'll give it a go.
      Thanks again.
