Hi Jim, just found your video and thought I'd share with you a technique I've used for many years since I began woodturning in the late '70's, before the invention of all these crazy good chucks. It might be kinder on your fingers! Make a round block to attach your blank to, as you already have, but instead of using hot glue, cover the block with regular wood glue and attach a piece of newspaper to it. Spread glue onto the other side of the newspaper and centre your blank on it. Leave it for a day or so to dry and continue on with the process of turning. When you've completed your turning, the piece can be easily knocked off the block and paper. All you need is to lightly sand the dry glue off. Scrape off any newspaper left on your block and use a new piece for each turning. It might sound to good to be true, but it works! I've never had a piece fly off (though I won't guarantee that :-) ) and have turned bowls and plates up to about 11 inches diameter. Happy fingers and happy turning!!
p.s. sycamore or maple are good woods for plates, and bowls, as they don't impart a flavour to food

Loved the video, very instructive and well done. FYI use denatured alcohol to remove the hot melt glue. Just apply a few drop all around the joint, let it soak a little while (30 sec. to a minute) then use a wood chisel or something similar to pry it loose. Works great. HTH

Yay -- I finally see another turner using my finishing weapon of choice. I've ground a bunch of card scrapers into convex and concave radii and use them on my pieces before resorting to sanding, which I do wet. No dust... Lee Valley/Veritas in Canada have a really nice card scraper holder that's a boon for aging fingers :-) Clyde

Hello Clyde. I think cabinet scrapers get overlooked too much in this age of sanding machines. I love the finish they achieve and as you say, much less dust. lol, Jim, your buddy needs a plate for night fishing. The funny thing is, if we get caught night fishing we face being charged for poaching. Nice plate, I'm sure your buddy will put it to good use. On the one that cracked, I would fix it with a bit of CA glue and use it myself.

I decided to try out some sawmill cutoffs, I ended up getting 3 9 inch plates out of my dry bit. It was American White Oak as well. And your right, it's very dusty lol. I mainly use a skew (not the best idea, but I'm extremely comfortable with them). I like it, along with the red oak, however some pieces have a very open grain, and it makes it semi complicated to get a good curve without opening the grain and making it feel porous

Hi Shelly, yes I have also been hesitant but if the wood is dry and the glue hot it should not be a problem with lightweight projects such as this. Take gentle cuts with sharp tools and stand out of the line of fire. The bigger glue guns are better because they get the glue hotter and produce a bigger bead. I just put a bead round the outside but if you actually sandwich the glue between the workpiece and the block I think it would be even stronger , possibly too strong. All the best, Jim

I have seen people use painters blue tape on, say, a plank of wood and a glue chuck. They tape both the wood and the chuck separately, then ca glue the pieces together on the tape. I just started turning, but i will try it within the month.

Extra strong double sided tape would do the same thing. Just be careful, safety first, the forces generated by a lathe can be quite extreme.

As you mentioned, hot glue is a lot stronger than it seems. I used to think this was only for craft work, but it does make a very strong bond for glue blocks.
Bummer about the crack. If this has been noticed earlier, you could have broken the crack then epoxied the pieces back together. Stronger than a CA fix. You could also have bandsawed the crack out then added an insert of contrasting wood to make this a feature.
I would not have used an open grain wood like white oak for a plate intended to be used for eating. My preference would be a close grain wood like hard maple. I expect this is a lot less expensive in the US.

This was so quick to turn that I wasn't too worried about the crack. I was going to CA the crack but thought I might end up gluing it to the glue block ( if you see what I mean ) and ending up with a mess.
I agree that white oak is not ideal but it was the best hardwood plank they had at the local timber merchant. We can't get maple planks easily and I was trying to do this without using a bowl blank. I will make sure it is well sealed. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Jim

Just stumbled across your video (2021) and found it interesting. I will try finishing this using a method that I use in finishing gun stocks. When you are through to your last sanding spray a fine mist of water on the wood, wait till it dries and do the final sanding. The water helps lift the wood fiber to allow for an even smoother finish.
You never told us the finish, however I am assuming that it was a food grade polish.

The finish used in the video was a food safe oil finish from Chestnut Products.

Just a tip on removing hot glue from the glue block and the plate. Use isopropyl alcohol as it weakens the glue bond and makes it extremely easy to remove. It should be a lot easier than working with the scraper.

Nicely done. You could use a food safe epoxy to fill the crack, maybe mix a black food coloring to give it a interesting look. Also have you tried a heat gun or hair drier on the hot glue for removal? Just to soften it a bit. Cheers.

I should have glued the crack but because it was for a gift I wanted it to be perfect. I didn't feel too bad about it because it was such a quick project. I could have used a hot air gun on the glue but the plate is quite thin and it would have been easy to warp it or crack it if I applied too much heat. Cheers, Jim

I could see three possibilities: 1. it is unsightly, 2. it is structural (i.e. the plate will fail), or 3. food / liquid will get into the crack and rot. As a solution for each possibility would filling the crack with thin CA glue solve the problem?

Hi Larry, thank you very much for very kind words. The flowers are hydrangeas, I am not much of a gardener so I don't know an awful lot about them. I do know that they require a lot of watering and that the pH of the soil can affect the colour of the blooms. Not sure about Oklahoma climate, they obviously do well in our garden, we live in a very mild part of the UK ( the far south) ,which has a temperate often wet climate. We don't get much frost and rarely get any snow, but i think they also do well in the North of the UK which can be much colder in winter. All the best, Jim.

Thank you for watching . I don’t often look at lathe speed, I just turn at what feels right. It was probably around 1500rpm, it is easier to turn fast, so long as you can do it safely.

Sorry but I can’t remember. I tend to turn at what feels right and don’t take much notice of RPM, but this only comes with experience. People often use speeds that are too low when they start turning, but you need to make sure you are safe and confident and that the workpiece is secure.

Thank you very much for watching. Difficult to say which is best as many woods will crack with changes in humidity and temperature. Probably a tight grained kiln dried wood would be best and give it many coats of oil. Oak can certainly be a problem. Beech would probably be a better choice.

The technique did not require a foot and a foot would also add weight, it needs to be lightweight so that it can be carried easily. Another reason for the flat bottom is so that it can be used upside down as a cutting board for food prep. Cheers, Jim
