I love the back half of Disc 2 so much. From the moment you emerge from the sometimes claustrophobic Fossil Roo, it feels liberating to be a literal continent away from the war and turmoil. That, and you get warm, sunny, summery looking weather as opposed to being immersed in the Mist, which I always assumed blocked out a lot of sunlight and left the lower parts of the Mist continent in perpetual autumn weather temperature wise.

    "I'm looking for someone sinister."
    "You're sinister-looking!"
It's little one-liners like that which helped this game have such charm and heart that's totally missing from modern games.

Sounds sandy, windy with a bit of melancholy.

I love how the residents of this village speak with such an Irish/Scottish accent. 🤣

FF9 has some of the best music in the Final Fantasy series. I don't think many others come close

Only FFVII and FFX come close, but not even they can match FFIX's soundtrack. It's the best of any video game.

I think FF8's is best and FF 10 marked an overalll decline due to it having 3 different composers with uneven styles but, still good. PS1 era is peak FF OST and I'll also add FF Tactics there as the cherry on top @IcyAuron

you can pretty much interject this track into any Final Fantasy game and maybe most spinoffs ... feels right at home in FFXI

4 more days to FF9 anniversary. Still one of the best JRPG I've ever played.

0:00 And here I will stop and say a few good words about FFIX. Yes, SUDDENLY.
The Outer Continent segment, from getting here to until you confront Kuja at the Iifa Tree at the end of Disk 2, is even a bit more decent. Yes, Quina still gets in the middle of the road, but at least the events that take place are quite interesting, Steiner is absent in this part and thus: No nonsense, and at the same time, the characters are guided, for once, by completely expedient goals for the most part.
There are still some annoyances though, like Zidane and Garnet's "romance".
Quina "Is very delicious shape. Inside might have fine cuisine!"
    [Quina runs inside]
Zidane "Geez... All s/he ever thinks about is food."
Dagger "Well, all you ever think about is girls..." [Dagger walks in]
Are you still butthurt over Zidane's brief and forgettable flirt with Lani? (Which was pretty forced, even Zidane didn't flirt with Beatrix when she was clearly being a war criminal psycho)
First off, Zidane protected you against Lani when she attacked. Secondly, we left Fossil Roo and had to traverse quite a bit over the Outer Continent on foot to reach Conde Petie. (Which, going by realistic travel time, and not by gameplay time, should have probably taken days) That "flirt" should have been long forgotten.
Also the view must be great from that glass house of your’s Garnet, since all you ever think about is your crazy mother and act self-centred constantly while giving Zidane (who has done a lot for you) the cold shoulder.
Zidane "Uh, that's right! My mind is filled with thoughts of...you!"
    Vivi "..."
    Zidane "..."
    [Vivi runs into the building]
Zidane "Maybe I'm trying too hard..."
Or maybe Dagger is just being an (obnoxious and petty) Tsundere, and not the likeable, charming and wholesome kind. She is in no position to be getting huffy with Zidane when all she has done is put him through so much crap.
This is one of the problems with Dagger and part of what's wrong with the love story, she is so wishy-washy. In the first disk, after Alexandria and the Evil Forest, she suddenly gets flanderized into this bland and really cliché naïve princess stereotype, whose naïvety was so implausible and overdone that it reached unsympathetically foolish levels (which I have already addressed before in rigorous detail), and now, in Disk 2 she's morphed into some sort of annoying Tsundere who spends most of her time huffing indignantly at Zidane despite that he and their friends risked a lot to save her from Brahne and Kuja (in which her getting into that situation in the first place was her own darn fault) and is working on getting her where she needs to go, and we haven't even gotten to how she acts on Disk 3 yet…
0:35 By the way, it is suggested that these dwarves in the original Japanese version had normal Japanese names (in translation, it's hard to distinguish, everyone here has European ones). That is! It turns out that of all the characters in the game, Sakaguchi decided to present Asians precisely in the form of some kind of green degenerates with a permanent defect in speech, culture and worldview. Wow, stay "classy", Gooch.
2:35 Here is Eiko, who is a more believable girl who lived in isolation, unlike Dagger, and has way more of a personality than her. The story with her late grandfather is also interesting, but we never even see him in a flashback and are fully explained about him.

The whole village is quirky, dwarves.. Goblins? Who speak Scottish. It was this once and we never have such unique race in a ff game again

As much as I love FFIX, the Mountain Path is one of the worst parts in terms of party selection. I get why it has to be that way for the story, but man, two white mages, a black mage, and only one physical attacker (who also has to steal) is a rough combination. I hate how rarely you get to fully pick your party in this game.

Too right! I had done well at that point gaining abilities still I would Flee random encounters in the area and scramble in desperation for the save point
