This "Tears for Fears" version is the original - written by Roland & sung by Curtis. And it did well - but it arguably became more famous when covered by Gary Jules (on solo piano) in 2001 - and used in the film Donny Darko. MTV seemed to have it on repeat for ages...

Many people interpret the line about "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I ever had" as meaning the singer has thoughts of suicide, but according to Roland Orzabal, who wrote the lyrics, it relates to the psychologist Arthur Janov's idea that our most dramatic dreams release the most tension. So, the guy in the song isn't necessarily looking to die - he wakes up from morbid, lucid dreams feeling better.

TFF is a very underrated group, and their latest album (2022) is phenomenal. IF you want to continue down this road, I would recommend "The Tipping Point" or "Rivers of Mercy" from their just-released album. "Change", "Mothers Talk", and "Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)" are also phenomenal songs. Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal's voices just mesh so perfectly, and that hasn't changed since the 80s.

As (likewise - fistbump!) a massive fan of both, DM have been far more consistent in terms of output and also have a far more extensive back catalogue than TFF does. Also, once DM broke through in the USA around the Rose Bowl concert, they ironically became far more successful in the States - and Europe of course - than they ever really were here in the UK. Here, people _still_ just associate them with IJCGE 🙄and would struggle to name another DM track, where most general music fans of a similar age here, would definitely know more than one TFF song.

Man, this is one of my favourite Tears For Fears songs. And when you ask us to give our interpretation of the song and its music video, that really made me think. Looking at the lyrics firstly, it's pretty much someone who struggles with severe depression observing the everyday lives of everyone around him. In the music video, Curt Smith is singing from the perspective of this person, and looking out the window at Roland Orzabal, who is dancing and having fun.

Man, the way you two pick up on the nuances of songs is incredible! Amber is spot on with how they determine who was going to be the lead for a particular song. They (in this case, it was Roland) come up with the lyrics and the melody first. And then, after they've got the music down pat, they sit down and figure out who would sound better to sing the song. In this case, Roland absolutely knew that Curt's voice was perfect for this song.
As for Roland dancing away in the background, originally he was supposed to just stand there. But he felt kind of stupid doing nothing, and the director agreed. So, Roland was asked to do some kind of dance, which he did. Or, as Roland called it, "doing the funky chicken."

I agree … but kids (such as I was once) can be in loving, stable families and be messed-up. We enter the world into a family not of our choosing, are given a name that we carry through life and have to fit into. We are then programmed, by parents, school, religion, media - all media, and through all this, we must try to discover who we really are, and where we fit. Some manage it, and many don’t. I recommend the book ‘The Four Agreements’ for anyone who relates to what I’ve written here.

This was a song off "The Hurting" album, their first, and in my humble opinion, their best. The whole album was pretty dark and moody. The "Dude outside dancing" was what we called "Spot Dancing". It was a thing for about 15 minutes, back in the 80's.

You both need to react to Gary Jules cover of this one soon. Just to experience a different take on this, the original. Gary's version sounds a good bit less tech and more somber. I like both, but I prefer listening to Jules' version. Would probably be the other way around if the techno sound weren't so forward in this and Curt Smith's voice was placed more forward in the recording.

Yes, their first album, which this came from, weaves themes of childhood emotional trauma. Most will find their later albums more accessible than the first.

Curt definitely had some of the band's earliest hits. "Pale Shelter" is another off this album. "Suffer The Children" is another personal fave from "The Hurting." Quite a message. You guys already listened to "Woman In Chains" from the "Sowing" album. For your own edification, you should listen to the next track on the album, "Bad Man's Song." Seeing Curt Smith sing it with his teenage daughter, Diva, during the pandemic was sentimental time travel. There is a good UA-cam interview with the band's duo about the meaning of the song in terms of psychological theory and the cathartic interpretation of bad dreams.
