  • Taking the Olympus TG-5 out to see how it is at night. Trying out different settings to see if I can get better shots. Part of my series with the TG-5 to learn its limits and capabilities.

    WoW !! I am really impressed what you can do with a camera like this! Now i really believe that is not only the gear but the man who is behind the gear. Nice video.

    Excellent photo walk. I really like the 2nd and 3rd shot of the interior of that building. The others were also very good.
    Thank you very much for your time and effort.

      Thanks for watching. Not the cameras fault, I'm just not quite there yet. Need to get some more practice with it.

      Thanks. The pictures where okay, not great. Not the cameras fault. I get a little better each time I go out. The weather today sucked, so couldn't get out to do a comparison.

    Interesting seeing empty streets in a downtown environment - this coming from a guy who grew up in Toronto and lived downtown most weekends in my youth.....now the serenity of a small town on Vancouver Island gives a much more sedate lifestyle.....again, thanks for the look.....you keep pluggin' away with good content !

      It was really cold out and about 10pm. I would love to move to a smaller town near the Smoky Mountains.

    THANKS, Rob! This is helpful since I was thinking of getting the TG-5 for knock around and remote shutter use. Believe it or not, it's not so much the camera but the x@!z** completely unreliable OI Share App that keeps me from purchasing. I wonder how many camera sales Olympus loses simply because of that (great cameras, horrible app). On my OMD's mine has never worked for more than a minute using both iPhones and Android.
    By the way, you are certainly right about prices. I was raised over in the McLean/Langley area in a medium sized home purchased for $69K - Now...$900K. In the many cities and towns I've lived in since, it could never be more than 180-250K, tops. Wow.

      The app works better on my newer cheapo phone than my main flagship phone going on 5 years now. I keep looking at phones, but haven't found a valid reason to justify spending that kind of money.

    • @AerialLensVideo
      @AerialLensVideo 5 років тому

      @@RobTrek I hear ya. That is encouraging since I am not about to leave the Olympus world. Mind sharing the cheapo brand and model - maybe THAT - simplicity? - is the key. I'll find one on c-list or a refurb perhaps, and just use it as a dedicated olympus device.

    The reason we enjoy watching you is, that you might just call yourself "Just a guy with a camera" you are not trying to sell us one, but take better pictures with the one we have.

    Nice video, loved the remark on raw and jpeg an the can of worms ;-) I understand what you mean and believe the means must survey the purpose. Actually after your vlogs on the art filters I’ be been using them with pleasure without even going in pos with those pics.

      Thanks. I took it out a couple of times for vlogs this month but the pictures I took were awful and the vlogs did not demonstrate what I was trying to share. I was playing with the color modes and color wheel trying to emulate kodachrome film and fujifilm. I even used a vintage olympus lens for the total experience of manual shooting. I'll come back to it soon. Thanks for asking!

    The new Olympus EMX (or whatever...) is coming out in a few days. Any plans of checking that one out with some videos for us?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 років тому

      Not sure I can justify buying it when it comes out. Would love to do some videos on it. It has some exciting rumored features. I doubt Olympus even knows I exist, so no chance of getting one to test.

    not sure if you said.. what shutter speeds are you shooting at? Also are you spot metering the lights?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 років тому

      It varied between 1/5 and 1/30th. I posted the exposure settings on instagram. The exposure settings are also next to each picture in this vlog, but I know they might be too small to read if watching on a phone. I did not spot meter, simply dialed in -0.3 to -1.3 ev depending on what I thought would work for the scene. I think I underexposed a bit too much trying to keep my shutter speeds up and iso low.

    Confused by the title. "not made for this!' sounds bad, like the camera is being "panned" for this use. But watching the video, it seems this camera is being regarded as very good and recommended for this use. So, what's the true opinion here?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 років тому +3

      I understand. The point I was making was even though the tg5 is marketed as a tough point and shoot, one can still get good results. So it's the title "its not made for this" just meant that it's not made as a night street photography camera but I took it out and used it like that anyway.

      @@RobTrek I see how you slowed the shutter speed to get that blur in the water and 100 iso to get the best color saturation like using kodachrome 64 in the film days.
