    How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.

Ok we NEED to know... how many of you have experienced such extreme temperatures?! It was really hard to find the words of just how COLD it was. Weather events like this are an important reminder of just how serious extreme conditions like this can be, even more so that our home is a Geodesic Dome with VERY little insulation 😂. The fact we spent all that time this summer re-insulating the dome was our saving grace, truthfully we would've had to leave the dome had we not been proactive. Overall, it's a pretty awesome feeling that no matter what weather systems head our way, the dome is always going to be safe and warm!! But in all seriousness, lets all collectively cross our fingers and toes that there's no more extreme weather this year!!!

We hit -27c here in Sussex New Brunswick with that cold snap. I don't know what the wind chill was, but our little house was creaking with the cold. Had to turn the backup baseboard heaters on along with the mini split to keep the temp at 21c in the house..but on the up side, no frozen pipes, just a warm place for me and the kitties.

An easy way to convert the temps when above the freezing point, is take the F temp, subtract 30, and then half it. So 80F minus 30 is 50, divide by 2 is 25C. Or the reverse is 30C is 30x2 = 60, plus 30 is 90F. It gets to within a couple of degrees F, which is close enough for most things. For below the freezing point, 40C is 40F, so you just need to know that's really freaking cold, even for us Canadians. :)

My husband Mark and I worked in Eskimo villages for 23 years. We lived in the Arctic Circle for 15 years on the coast of the Arctic Ocean. Then we moved to the south and lived in Anaktuvuk Pass for eight years this was in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
The temperature was often -25 with the wind chill bringing the temp down to -50. That's Fahrenheit.
We enjoyed our life in the village and didn't mind the cold. You learned to dress for it then you stayed warm. Truly we miss the village life especially the children.

If we don’t get -40 several times through the winter we are surprised and thankful. Side note regarding the wasps. First get a jug of household ammonia, this will neutralize almost any insect bite you could get, in fact I would try it on any kind of unknown bite. So far as wasp or bee stings it works instantly, not kidding, got stung on the lip by a bee last summer right before work and when I got there no one could tell. It was completely gone. Works on horsefly, deerfly and mosquito bites too. Call her Clementine.❤

      Yes, we could do w/69F.
Live in NH USA. Temps in Central NH were -30F below zero. Atop Mt Washington (the White Mtns), there was a /world/ record of -100F below zero with the wind chill. It felt great to be snuggling in our new cherry wood handmade (not by us) sleigh bed. Even so, it was incredibly chilly. We didn’t venture out for 3 days!!
      Excellent vid, as always.
Lube is very important, you both know it. Haha.

Oh my Dynamic Duo, my Favorite Boys. I love the door you went with for the workshop, it looks so nice. Todd, I just knew from the look on your face when the Installer said lube the first time that we were in for some laughs. And it just got better, Tyler knows you so well. Poor Squirrel, she didn't look happy about being outside. I love how the two of you love each other. Stay warm. Sending Love and Hugs to Tyler, Todd and their Lil Family 💙💙🐶🐶🐱

I'm happy to see the wine was in a heated environment. One brisk night in North Dakota - probably only 0 F (--18 C) - the wine froze inside a refrigerator in an unheated breezeway and shattered the bottle. Yes, the fridge was unable to keep it warm enough.
I don't generally need conversions when it's above 0 C but negative temperatures in either are hard except for the one above and -40 (the same in both systems).
The conditions of another "crisp" night on the Great Plains led me to check with Environment Canada. I found that our -35 F with a 50 knot breeze has a wind-chill equivalent of -62 C. We were not told that; we were simply told that exposed flesh would freeze in 45 seconds.
Squirrel decided to test the outdoors but how about the puppies? What have they been doing? Our cocker spaniel was fine going outdoors in North Dakota no matter what the weather was.
Also, we used to plug in our cars in North Dakota. Do you do that as well?

The coldest I've ever experienced was -22C in Atlanta,Ga years ago. I have a wall of glass patio doors that are not double pane and that was the first thing I changed when it warmed up. It was a completely different experience than even at the -7C we normally get. The cold came right through those windows. Fortunately, I had a good electric heating system and the Power system held. My Power bill that month was outrageous though. I keep a below freezing rated sleeping bag handy just in case of cold emergencies and I used it that night.

I saw the weather forecast for your region and wondered how you were enduring it. At least, clearly, you survived it! Hurrah! So many of the things you do awe me. (I have two hands full of thumbs.) But I think the confidence with which you measure and, accurately, cut things is my standout!

100% keep the conversions. I always find it so annoying if a unit is used I don't understand. It's easier at those low temperatures, but in the positives it gets wild.

(Celsius x 2) + 30 will get you the rough Fahrenheit calculation. ❤ I really wish they taught these (and metric) to us in school here in the US, it puts us at a huge disadvantage when we are communicating with the rest of the world

I CAN RELATE 100000 percent about your deep freeze weather!!!! We, Buffalo NY & surrounding areas, suffered sever historic snow/ice/wind/-39 degree temps not including wind chill factor. It's DANGEROUS. Lives can/have been lost. I'm so glad y'all didn't take it lightly and took it very serious. Love the storage of wood idea 💡 in the mansion idea...just genius. @@wendypilling3619 it was heartbreaking. 20+ years ago we had to drive through Buffalo to get home during a similar storm. Cars everywhere, whiteouts etc. Thankfully we made it out alive. They closed the road behind us. Of course we've dealt with type of weather many times, but it's a whole other animal when you're trying to drive through it because you don't want to die in your car.
