Ok we NEED to know... how many of you have experienced such extreme temperatures?! It was really hard to find the words of just how COLD it was. Weather events like this are an important reminder of just how serious extreme conditions like this can be, even more so that our home is a Geodesic Dome with VERY little insulation 😂. The fact we spent all that time this summer re-insulating the dome was our saving grace, truthfully we would've had to leave the dome had we not been proactive. Overall, it's a pretty awesome feeling that no matter what weather systems head our way, the dome is always going to be safe and warm!! But in all seriousness, lets all collectively cross our fingers and toes that there's no more extreme weather this year!!!

We hit -27c here in Sussex New Brunswick with that cold snap. I don't know what the wind chill was, but our little house was creaking with the cold. Had to turn the backup baseboard heaters on along with the mini split to keep the temp at 21c in the house..but on the up side, no frozen pipes, just a warm place for me and the kitties.

An easy way to convert the temps when above the freezing point, is take the F temp, subtract 30, and then half it. So 80F minus 30 is 50, divide by 2 is 25C. Or the reverse is 30C is 30x2 = 60, plus 30 is 90F. It gets to within a couple of degrees F, which is close enough for most things. For below the freezing point, 40C is 40F, so you just need to know that's really freaking cold, even for us Canadians. :)

It's nice you do the work to convert the temperatures for us backward folks in the states. When I'm traveling, I use a few shortcuts rather than trying to do the math. One I call the rules of fours: -40 is the same in both. 4 Celsius is 40 Fahrenheit. 40 Farenheit is 104 Celsius. For 82 Fahrenheit simply reverses the numbers to get 28 Celsius.
On a tangentially related note, when my mother was in her mid eighties she started to give her age in celsius. She made it well into her 101st year (or about 38 in celsius).

We haven't experienced temps THAT low, but on day 2 of living in our new cabin, it got down to 2F and we lost power. It made us wonder what we got ourselves into, but we survived and persevered! And yep, the temp conversions are definitely handy! Glad y'all made the best of it. Cheers from the southeast US.

run at freezing night with firewood 'back to nature', well, so-so evolution of future way of life. I've had enough of this 'back to the nature' in my childhood. and I definitely don't want it back in my life. people did not just settle in villages and cities for no reason. if everyone lives alone in the forest, then who will work in factories to make solar panels and all these tools. these experiments 'back to nature alone in the woods' are good for young, healthy and without children. I know how to be the only child in the middle of nowhere. this is no fun and 'inspiring' at all.

Hi guys! All the prep is right on the mark. That you have all you need, in advance, is quite similar to hurricane prep in the "lower 50". Having said that, I have lived a good deal of my life in the Minnesota Lake District, South Dakota, and Nebraska, where we saw -60F (-51C) on multiple occasions through the years. All one need do is be prepared (yes, was a Boy Scout for about 30 years, man and boy). Having and using the right clothing, shoes/boots, jackets, gloves, and hats/hoods is what allows you to go out and do whatever you need or want to do. Burying your "lines" [water, gas, electricity] and having the right wall and window insulation at least available makes you well-prepared. Snuggles and snacks, great idea! Wine and hot chocolate (with a shot of whatever added 🙂
Now all you need is a big huge quilt 😉😉♥♥😎😎🙏🙏

Gosh Squirrel really adores you !🐾 How you ever had the nerve to go into the hot tub at -46° is beyond me...what if house door got locked by jumping dogs or cat and you were out in cold...no phone,no keys or warm clothing.. or be glad you're not old with an imagination running wild. The garage door is Fab ! Never saw one quite like it.... covering all the windows is an excellent idea... keep the drafts and seam freezers at bay.Soon the Spring will come I just know it.Until then be wise, safe and well fed.

(02/16/23) You guys ought to have an airlock between the outside door and inside door to keep the heated air inside your dome and in summer, cooled air in. If you have winters in future like -44°C, you’ll appreciate having it.

Thanks for the temperature conversions. I almost freaked when Squirrel bolted out the door when you were carrying wood inside. Knowing cats, I figured she would explore a bit even in the snow. I was relieved when you let her back inside. I hope that this is the worst weather you have to face this winter and that the rest of the winter will be milder.

If we don’t get -40 several times through the winter we are surprised and thankful. Side note regarding the wasps. First get a jug of household ammonia, this will neutralize almost any insect bite you could get, in fact I would try it on any kind of unknown bite. So far as wasp or bee stings it works instantly, not kidding, got stung on the lip by a bee last summer right before work and when I got there no one could tell. It was completely gone. Works on horsefly, deerfly and mosquito bites too. Call her Clementine.❤
