I think it's interesting how much people have reevaluted Roberts' Master. I think because at that point we only had Delgado and Ainley who were playing very similar Masters. Now we've had some very different interpretations with Jacobi, SImm, Gomez, Dhawan, Macqueen, Gatiss and even Beevers getting a revival. Now we've got all sorts of variations of The Master like we've got so many versions of The Doctor so we can now look at them all as different aspects of the character instead of the version that we got for most of Classic Who and we can appreciate them for their different takes on them.

I love how dark it is that as soon as Chang says "no" to him at the end, the Master doesn't even try to convince him. He instantly decides to kill him instead. There's no pretence to this Master, and he has none of the charm and grace of the Delgado and Ainley Masters. He's much colder and more ruthless.

Can you imagine starting the film at the point where McGann exits the morgue slab, and then having flashbacks to the circumstances around his arrival!? Maybe even in a Moffatt style of editing. The wire scene in Grace's car could have seen her memory of the events etc. Anyone care to edit this into existence!?

Regarding the atomic clock plot point: In a quartz watch, a current is run through a quartz crystal and the oscillation produced by this is used to time the seconds. In an atomic clock this process still occurs, but the frequency produced by the quartz is compared to the oscillation of the atoms of another element for "tuning" in order to regulate the quartz and keep accurate timing (because quartz crystals are not uniform, but atomic structures are). I've not heard of beryllium being used for this purpose, but that seems to be the idea they're going for here - that the regulation the famously accurate atomic clock would get from the beryllium chip would fix the ill-defined "timing malfunction" of the Tardis by the same process.

If I remember rightly, both Segal and McCoy HATED the 1987-1989 outfit so chose not to use it for the movie.
And the fact that Grace recognises that the TARDIS is bigger is implied to be the Master taking control as, a few minutes later, she falls under his control (because she’d been sprayed on the arm by his acid breath) and clobbers McGann around the head.
As for the Tom Baker scarf - originally the BBC wanted Tom to headline the film, so it may be a left over from that original plan.

The problem is that, unlike 'Rose', the 1996 movie does nothing to grab the casual viewer / newcomer. And it doesn't do much to please hardcore Doctor Who fans either. However, Paul is excellent and probably my third favourite doctor!

I don’t know if you’re aware but the VHS release of the movie is actually censored. A lot of the gun violence in the opening scenes was toned down, the whole hospital surgery sequence was cut short (including the Doctor’s death scream being removed entirely) and Chang Lee’s neck being snapped was edited. The DVD and Blu ray releases are uncut.
This video does a great job in detailing the censorship history of Doctor Who ua-cam.com/video/9qfGeyscaOA/v-deo.html

I would give the TV movie a solid 8.5. I really enjoyed it from the first viewing in '96. And I really have never had a major problem with the whole "half-human" thing. I mean, who knows? I felt it added to the mystery. Eric Roberts was, in my opinion, an excellent Master, and it was a ripping good script. Yes, it had some continuity problems, and some things that made you scratch your head in confusion...but overall I loved it and still do.

I have strong memories of going to buy the video. It has been scheduled to come out two weeks before broadcast but then there was that shooting incident in the UK so they cancelled the release by a week so they could edit out some of the violence.
After travelling to every video shop I could think of and finding no video, I eventually went to The Who Shop to see if they had it and of course they didn't.
I don't actually remember buying it the following week but I remember how flat I felt after viewing it - as we knew by then that the US ratings were rubbish so no follow up was likely.
I went off it for a long time after repeated post-mortems on it. Of course when nuwho came along and started off all stripped back, we saw how it should have gone.
Now I don't mind it as a nostalgic curio. 1996 was a very strange year for me - lots happening - so the TVM comes with lots of associations to other non-who things.
I think that Geoffrey Sax's direction is the standout for me (well it is one of my biggest interests - tv direction). It looks stunning as well as having a playful, quirky quality that he always brings to his work. I wasn't so impressed by McGann originally but he's grown on me over the years. The TARDIS looks stunning and incredible - I just don't like the style of it, I like my TARDIS bright and white. A few tweaks and the police box would be utterly perfect but even then it's still superior to anything since!
I got the soundtrack release for free. Soundtracks Direct mailing company did a thing where you'd list alternative soundtrack in case they didn't have in stock the one you wanted. So when my alternative choice turned up I was like - "oh shame they've sold out". I was VERY happy the following week when the TVM soundtrack turned up - well the disc did say not for sale😎

Idk if this is what they were going for, but when I first watched the movie, I thought the TARDIS was meant to be somehow like a portal to Gallifrey, hence the Eye being there. For context, I believe I watched it during Tennant's era when I was about 10, so I hadn't seen much of the TARDIS or much of Gallifrey at the time.

I think the TV Movie failed to revive the show back in 96' for many reasons. You could say it's that the plot was too connected to the past, but the greatest problem was the plot itself. Americans audiences were used to seeing Star Trek and X-Files. We knew what good sci-fi was, and sadly that ain't it. The TV Movie just had too many plot contrivances and holes. Like you said, the whole reverse time like christopher reeves superman affair, as well as it being midnight all over the world at once was just too much. Also, even though Daphne Ashbrook is an excellent actress, Grace is so unlikable.

Honestly, enough with the seedy porn tags and constant sub-juvenile references to bodily fluids. There's a reason UA-cam was once going to brand all DW content as "for kids," ending comment sections forever and various other sanctions. Which never happened in the end yet here we are on a channel watched by kids (a channel literally plugging toys and dolls!) with an unpleasant strain of incongruous, inappropriate, misplaced "humour" best left either on the cutting room floor or, more aptly, on the walls of the kind of public lavatories which are generally best avoided.
I'm about as impressed with it as your RE teachers parents evening meet n greet would be. And I don't recall even talking like that when I was in my thirties sooo... it's not big, not clever, simply not Doctor Who

Matt isn’t making content for kids, nor is he listing his content as ‘For Kids’, which is a setting you have to enable on Upload. Therefore any kids using the UA-camKids app won’t see his content. If a kid ends up using the regular UA-cam app then that’s the parents fault for not monitoring their kids internet use enough.
Matt is allowed to make whatever content he likes, and a couple of semen jokes is hardly the worst thing a child can encounter on this platform. A kid can find anything on the internet, it’s up to you to protect them, not expect the internet to miraculously change.
