Ok the Five Doctors is a very special one for me. Because it was my first ever Doctor Who I borrowed and watched at my local library and my proper introduction to the show as a whole. (With the exception of the BBC Two repeats from the late 90s which I saw bits of and wasn’t fully aware of the show at the time)

I watched The Five Doctors religiously on UA-cam as a child and was my only exposure to classic Doctor Who for so long that I think I know it almost line by line 😅

Guys excellent new Intro 🙂also the setup works well , just glad you guys are still making vids from 2 separate timezones 🙂I got the VHS of this in like early 1996 with The kings demons and postcards LOL which I think now the updated effects on it are looking kind of dated, Will they do some new effects for the season 20 Blu-ray ? Actually it doesn't count as season 20 does it its a special ? So will it be on the season 20 blu ray ? Hope so but I LOVE The Five Doctors its definitely one of my go to episodes :-)

Re the Raston Warrior Robot scene... I wonder if JNT was channeling the "Rabbit of Caerbannog" scene from _Monty Python & The Holy Grail_ when he directed it? If only the Cybes had remembered to bring the Holy Hand Grenade with them ;)

All the Doctors are reduced to their token target novel descriptions - Davison is never blander than in this story. You can tell that Terrance worked with Troughton and Pertwee as they're the ones that he gets right.

5 Doctors is not one of my top favourites but it's so comforting, it's like a warm Doctor Who hug. Was a big part of me having a window into classic Doctor Who as I saw it early on, on DVD. I think I'd only seen City of Death, Spearhead, Keeper Of Traken, Logopolis, Castrovalva, Robot and Genesis at the time, and I watched it around the time of series 3 broadcasting, so I knew who Peter Davison was in Time Crash!
(Also love the ROD references flying through space 😆)

The part where you talk about how indebted Doctor Who is to Terrance Dicks was very intriguing, especially when you mention how Robert Holmes was approached to write the anniversary instead.
I wonder if you guys would at some point consider doing a retrospective on Dicks' contributions to the show, or perhaps a comparison between his style and Holmes' (not in a “Who is better” way, since obviously that doesn't have an answer, but more comparing their writing and their thoughts about what the 'essence' of Doctor Who was).
Anyway, great video as always, looking forward to the next one

Watched it over and over on a taped off the telly copy of children in need - includes the half in half out of character meeting with Wogan in the void. I did actually watch it on original broadcast, but was about three years old. Warriors of the Deep, Frontios, and the Five Doctors all kind of welded together into one thing in my head at that age.
It’s the *only* Who story - apart from maybe some of the season 26 ones, where I taped them and could rewatch them - that I accidentally lodged line for line in my head.
The real shame is that we’ve never quite had anything like it since, with Power of the Doctor basically being as close as it gets. I mean, Chibnall era irritates the hell out of me, but he got that one thing right, and it’s looking like that was the actual anniversary story. But we will see.

As far as being a Doctor Who fan I would be what you call Long Term. Great review of The Five Doctors but there are 3 things of not that I feel you left out. 1. The 1st Doctor and an older Susan arrived in the Death Zone separately. The story opens with Hartnell's goodbye to a young Susan at the end of Dalek Invasion. This is that reunion (Dalek included) 2. This story closes a gaping hole in Classic Doctor Who. Every Doctor in Classic Who did battle with both the Daleks and the Cybermem except Pertwee - this was his chance to fight the Cybermen 3. The Time Lords offered the Master a new regeneration cylce. If they can do this, why does Borussa go though this Darl Tower saga in the first place the Dark Tower

God, the addition of John Hurt and a 2nd David Tennant in that intro really illustrate just how ridiculous Doctor Who has gotten with it's title character.

I vividly remember watching it when I was about five, I don't think I was ever more excited as a child.
Fun bonus fact - I had the double-disk DVD (with both versions), there was a hidden commentary by David Tennant and a few of the production team, it was a blast.
Also, really enjoyed the new look, I had some trepidation about that but it worked really well.

Fun fact: Lis Sladen is called "Sarah Jane" as many times in this story as she was during the _entirety_ of Jon and Tom's eras. Throughout that time, she was only referred to as "Sarah Jane" eight times, many of them when she was being introduced to someone, with her full name being given as a formality. _The Five Doctors_ matches that number when Jon calls her "Sarah Jane" eight times, informally and nearly all the time. In contrast, she was referred to as just "Sarah" on more than _eighty_ occasions between 1973 and 1976. The Cult of Sarah Jane (as I call it) seems to have been born in _The Five Doctors,_ but she'll always be "Sarah" to me.

the 5 doctors was the second who i ever watched. I remember getting the video for my birthday with part 1 of the Daleks, yes people of today will never know the pain the of doctor who stories having to be split over 2 or 3 VHS!. Anyway, i loved the 5 doctors. John and pat i loved the most in this, their banter is just chefs kiss. I never knew that JNT directed the cyber massacre! wow he really should of done more action scenes!
Oh my god you are right about moffat and chibs! i totally forgot that the original plan was for the Cybermen to become Cyberlords, so Moffat took the master and cybermen working together, Chibs took that and the original premise and using it to become the Cybermasters..... just like he did with the morbius doctors.
love Billy being a total fan boy of pertwee.
I love the new intro, look. Love the little things flying in the background. There is a minor sound issue around the 13 min mark of the volume going really low, but it only lasts about a minute or so.
Oooh can't wait for a news video of the return of Mel, at the Unit helipad and with rumours she is going to launch the UNIT spin off. Also who do you think the returning 4 doctor character for series 14 is going to be, that they announced?

The first video came out on the 9th September 1985 - with the edited US version.
The second release was on the 9th July 1990 and unedited.
Then in 1995 the Special Edition got released with The King's Demons.

Peter Davison says he thought keeping the Doctors separate from each other for most of the episode was a mistake and he’s right. A lot more interaction of the four of them would have made it much more interesting. And less companions too.

My fave aspect of this is the pairing of 1st Doc and Tegan, their dynamic is very real and relatable. I wish they had more time together, even if its messing around chucking coins on a chessboard.
I used to find this story a bit of harmless fluff, maybe even a little embarrassing, but I am glad it exists.

In the original version of the story, I believe the idea was to have 5, 3 and 2 go to the Tower through the Death Zone, whilst 4 would have been in the Capitol with Borusa (as mentioned), with the 1st Doctor being left in the TARDIS (they wanted to give 1 the least amount to do originally because he's a recast). I think the pairings were planned to be 1/Susan, 2/Victoria, 3/The Brig, 4/Sarah and 5/Tegan/Turlough, which ultimately didn't pan out. In addition, instead of Sarah falling into a ditch, she was originally supposed to end up in a town filled with Autons! Didn't have the budget for that, alas.

Re. Susan. Carole Ann Ford and Peter Davison wanted to work it in to cover the lack of reaction in the dialogue. Saward wrote a short story in the Radio Times that reduced Susan to just another companion.

Fun review - I enjoyed that a lot! Saw the story on original transmission and loved it, especially for Jon and Patrick and the return of the Cybermen. A great anniversary event, beautifully introduced by the Hartnell speech and capped by the Delia Derbyshire theme merging into the Howell version (the best two, in my opinion). Repeated viewings have not been as rewarding - for reasons you picked out: the layby 'fall', Susan (and Turlough) being largely left out, the tatty and rather pointless Dalek and the lack of attempt to disguise the tarmac road in the Death Zone. Is it also the first of the now-too-common cases of the Cybermen being reduced to cannon fodder of one sort or another? But still great comfort Doctor Who and best of the anniversary stories. The Easter egg DVD commentary with David Tennant & co is a great accompaniment.

I first experienced this story via the 25th anniversary DVD and I've always enjoyed the story. My only complaint is Susan was wasted and the lack of interaction between the Drs & companions at the end
Apparently Ian, Ben, Polly, Victoria, Jo, Harry, Leela and Romana I were supposed to be in this story but the actors either declined (like William Russell & Deborah Watling) or unavailable (like Katy Manning & Ian Marter). Maxil was supposed to be in this story but Colin was unavailable.

The Five Doctors is borderline Dimensions in Time, for me. One of those stories is a pantomime of passed it Doctors on a pensioners day out doing ropey impressions of the Who they used to be, with a script-by-numbers congealing into a dodgy-hipped runaround in shit locations accompanied by the most throw away, pointless, lifeless-eyed cameos by former companions, in an unholy contrived situation which only a flaming galah would ever think was canon: the other story is Dimensions in Time.
That said I enjoyed the review and yes, the onscreen set up works fine

Between this and Silver Nemesis it seems that Doctor Who's go-to anniversary formula is to take a gentle stroll towards some Time Lord artefact or other (and maybe breezily dispatch a few useless Cybermen along the way).
P.S.: Did you know that the infamous "Lis falls down a hill" scene replaced a whole sequence in which she amd Jon were chased by Autons?
