Lyrics:
Jeremy's so stoned
I'd be surprised if he saw the tears in Sherry's eyes
She's standing in the corner staring at the floor
I wonder what the hell he did this time
Normally I wouldn't care to be so bold
Tonight I think I'll ask her what is wrong
She seems a bit embarrassed and I understand
I say "I wish that you were having a good time."
She says "You know I've never really met someone like you."
"You know I've never really met someone like you."
I'm not one to speak up but I've had a few
So I start cutting Jeremy right in two
I said "I don't know what you see in him, "
"It seems to me all he ever does is bring you down."
I'm spilling my drink as I really start
Tearing one of my best friends apart
She's getting uneasy and my drunken speech ends
As my hand finds its way to hers
I say "You know I've never really met someone like you."
"You know I've never really met someone like you."
Jeremy walks over and, to my surprise,
Sherry puts her arm around his side.
The imagery seemed a shocking, until I realized how well it complements the emotional heaviness of the song.
Such an upsetting song. That's an awful situation but I love how the story is told. I think a lot of people have been in this situation and know what it's like
my life
From wich point of view? I think the protagonist is a horrible person. The girlfriend of one of his best mates is upset. and because he is drunk he misuses her emotion trying to get into her pants.
@@toffegozer this guy gets it
how do you know the girl wasn't pretending to be upset just to get a power trip? Maybe he didn't do anything this time... or the last time. Maybe she's practicing her manipulation techniques.
@@alanmalcheski8882 yikes..
damn the video actually portrays the music lyrics. you don't see that very much these days
Will Flems well, chad is king of that
Check out Chad Vangaalen - Molten Light
U dont see it because its generally considered tacky and cringy
Probably cost an absolute fortune
i love the way he pronounces things
Lmao ikr
Sounds like the lead singers of the band America. Very reminiscent of that sound to me.
So cute
Reminds me of Homestar Runner and Mike Tyson from The Meth Minute.
So you’re into speech impediments. No judgement, everyone’s gotta thing.
The arrangement and production on this album is so fucking good. I genuinely haven't heard an album that struck me like this in quite a while.
Kurt Vile, Morgan Delt !
Hearsticles
yea dude !
Same
true.
Man his music is so chill, refreshing, and contemplative. Anyone know of similar artists? Can't get enough of the simple and honest tunes of the Shauf.
I honestly can't think of another artist like Andy Shauf. There's probably someone similar, maybe Jens Lakemen.
Seconding Jens Lekman, and Hello Saferide might be up your alley too.
You should check out Sufjan Stevens as well! I like "Eugene" and "Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois".
Oh yeah Sufjan is my dude.
I'll be sure to check out this Jens Lekman fellow!
spoocyguy man I just listened to Wilco - Someone to lose, and I found that a bit similar. Also the video is pretty cool.
This what I call real art
1)- A good song
2)- Great lyrics with an original story
3)- Nice video clip
How did the inter-webs manage to keep this hidden from me for the last 7 years? Mind pleasantly blown.
A nice touch is the protagonist blows smoke in Sherrys face the same way Jimmy burps beer in her face at the end.
Dont be fooled to think that Jimmy is in any way lesser than.
no.. in many ways Jimmy might be the lesser man.. if one of my criteria for being a man were only the bluest creatures can be a man, then Jimmy is clearly inferior. So, you just don't know what someones standards of being a Man are. I guess what i am trying to say is Don't be fooled to think Jimmy ISN'T in any way lesser than.
@@karlroseman6119 By the criteria of critique laid out by the protagonist from whit we together judge Jimmy we can also judge the protagonist since they share the same surface level faults and therefore a parallel could be drawn that they share underlying faults of the same caliber.
@@Isayonelove yeah in the music video directed by gaalen, not the song.
@@DougerArt Very true.
I never really thought about it, but I think that's the nicest romantic thing I would want to hear. "You know I've never really met someone like you." I'm not usually a mushy person, so idk why, it just hit me pretty hard.
also can you all think of some other songs that give you the same feeling as the "you know I've never really met someone like you" part?
i'm not sure of any songs that give me quite the same feeling this one does, but I know that I'm going to use that precise line when I know I've found someone I love.
Well, it's not really the same emotion, but there's a bit towards the end of the pup song "sleep in the heat" that gets to me whenever i hear it. Something along the lines of, "You hadn't been eating, i thought you were sleeping" which is sung clean, followed by "But you're not waking up." Which is delivered in this very soul wrenching desperate scream. Get's me every time.
if you haven't already hit it, this immediately reminded me of wilco's yankee hotel foxtrot. similar in production values, instrumentation, tone, and even certain musical tendencies. "jesus etc" is probably what you're looking for
@@devinlikesmusic thanks! I looked Wilco up, and your recommendation of "Jesus Etc" was spot on. Right up my alley
"Leave Me Like You Found Me" and "Either Way" by Wilco. "Only for You" by The Heartless Bastards, "Space Song" by Beach House, "Of Lacking Spectacle" by Gus Dapperton and lastly I'll suggest "All Exterior Dark" by Wokava Gentle. I hope you find satisfaction within my suggestions. Have a great day!
almost shed a thug tear at the end. this is what great music should continue to be
I get a warm overwhelming feeling every time I hear the chord he plays at 1:23, beautiful.
totes knew the part, sames.
It's an am7 wich is fantastic
Jeremy's controlling us all humans over here. And he's stoned. Everything makes sense now.

Well who ever has the controller rn needs to let go of it
LYRICS
Jeremy’s so stoned
I’d be surprised if he saw the tears in Sherry’s eyes
she’s standing in the corner staring at the floor
I wonder what the hell he did this time?
normally I wouldn’t care to be so bold
tonight I think I’ll ask her what is wrong
she seems a bit embarrassed and I understand
I say “I wish that you were having a good time”
she says “you know I’ve never really met someone like you”
I’m not one to speak up but I’ve had a few
so I start cutting Jeremy right in two
I say “I don’t know what you see in him
it seems to me that all he ever does is bring you down”
I’m spilling my drink as I really start
tearing one of my best friends apart
she’s getting uneasy and my drunken speech ends
as my hand finds it’s way to hers
and I say “you know I’ve never really met someone like you”
Jeremy walks over
and to my surprise
Sherry puts her arm around his side.
Emilia Dany oof.
I feel bad for the first person in the song.
By first person, I meant the friend who likes his friend's girlfriend.
V.A. Trinidad lets not forget that the first person is a douche for liking his friends girlfriend under the influence of alcohol and maybe other stuff, which never in the world he would have the bravery to talk to her (the song says)
Personally, I think sherrys the douche.
Emilia Dany te amooooo ❤
i love the ironic use of the little piano sting at the end, using it for that sad and unresolved ending instead of 'you know i've never really met someone like you'
This is one of my all time favourite songs. And I don't do favourites really. The melancholy sound, the way Andy sings - it's perfect.

A year ago, I was in a relationship and the person I was with introduced me to this song and I remember listening to it and I related to it immediately. He was like the narrator and I was Sherry. It very soon became our song. Now when I listen to it, after out relationship has ended, considerable time has passed, this song takes on a very different meaning where, I am the narrator and I always had him saying that "he never met someone like me"... I'm grateful to him for many things, most of which is the music he introduced me too. So even though I've not met someone quite like him either, this is a bittersweet memory that I'll treasure. It's remarkable how another person's work can connect so deeply to my own life experiences.
I love this song even though it brings so memories. There's something so beautiful in the compoisiton of it :)
Thank you Mr. Shauf!
Fun fact: The narrator ends up being gay for Jeremy further on in the album. This whole song is supposed to make you believe the narrator is into Sherry but he was never into Sherry to begin with. The narrator actually starts talking badly about Jeremy so Sherry will break up with Jeremy so the narrator can have Jeremy for himself. This is revealed later on in the album.
This is Steely Dan for the millennial generation. It has that happy-go-lucky tune paired with serious and somewhat sad lyrics. Its great.
Love Steely Dan and I totally agree.

But we don't know the full story lol
But you're probably right. 😅😅

Just watched this 5 times in a row. Lovely and catchy tune
Great song, and cool animation in the video. It took me a couple listens to get it. Protagonist gets grosser and weirder looking as the song progresses

This is the cutest yet strangest thing I've ever seen.
Toxic relationship with a drunken perspective. Period.
This song brings me down so hard. It's a fusion of pure love exploding in my heart because of the pure gold that this song is and sadness by remembering I once was Sherry ):
And what did you do in that situation? I'm super curious to know haha :V
I used to be Jimmy's friend
Listening to this after watching Peep Show. Feels like the song is from Mark's perspective.
ok ill be playing this for the rest of the year
Can confirm, it's been more than a year
That last chord is haunting, goes so well with what the lyrics portray.
Man I love how he sings like I’m NOT GAY but man it’s adorable? Makes me feel like a teenage girl swooning over here
wow, so simple and complete at the same time, I love everything about this.
I've been watching Loudermilk recently on Netflix. Man was I surprised when I heard all these Andy Shauf's songs. Took me back. I highly recommend that show.

hahahaha i relate to this, i must have listened to this song at least 30 times in the same day
It looks like a Rick and Morty's party.

The second time you hear the song, its a complete different feeling
It’s been so many years and I keep coming back to this over and over again. It hits a part of the heart and head that just can’t be put into words. The imagery adds so much.
Same!!!
X3!
Jeremy just notice her
I think this is a commentary on human nature, as paralleled by the fact that it's an alien party. Every single behavior exhibited by the 3 characters in the song is morally questionable, the ending being the most obvious and important one. Yet, the story is compelling because these flaws are relateable to all of us. This begs the question: was that a happy ending? Are our lives bittersweet, or downright pathetic?
damn mate
Very well articulated sir!
We're hearing the song from one point of view. The point of view of someone trying to get into the pants of his best friend's girlfriend. So everything he says is suspect. Personally, my interpretation of the song is that the narrator character has made up this whole narrative of Jeremy making Sherry feel bad because it allows him to feel justified in going for Sherry. Sherry's embarrassment isn't at Jeremy, it's at the narrator's drunken intentions. Sherry could initially be feeling bad for any number of reasons. I don't trust anything the narrator says, and to me it seems like the songwriters want us to slowly realize that we can't trust him, most especially because of the last part.
@@keithklassen5320 I believe protragonist has seen Sherry unhappy before because of Jeremy. They likely have an unhealthy relationship, yet Sherry doesnt want to leave. Protagonist thinks thinks he knows her, but in the end he just 'wants' her. He isn't the good guy he thinks he is.

that means all my party was entirely a videogame?
The rock I find keeps getting more and more weird and experimental but this is a breath of fresh air. Never heard anything so minimal and so impactful at the same time.
Chad really outdid himself with the animation for this one. It gets the songs across so well. I especially love the part around 2:17 where he starts doing what I can only assume is a sort of mating ritual, truly personifying his aims to sway Sherry for his own selfish means
This song is a fucking earworm. I'd hate it except I love it.
Andy is such a talented and underrated artist, definitely one of my favorites of all time.
idk why i'm cryin
Is it not the case that the lyrical subject misunderstood Sherry, exaggerated the diagnosis of her relationship with Jeremy, and scared her, began to approach inadequately close and Jeremy had to came to help her and de-escalate situation. I think that even though Jeremy sucks, he cares about Sherry, and the lyrical subject wanted to use her weakness to fuck his friend's girlfriend.
Andy Shauf is one of the only artists that I thoroughly enjoy every song from, they all make me feel really comfortable...
God this songs leaves me wanting more (in all the good ways).
I'm so glad there is a video for this song now
Andy shauf is an artist with uniquely feelings, very imtimist , it's hard to find people like that today

Looks like a video from the time when MTV was a good channel...
I have a theory that this is sherry's conscious speaking to her bc at one point shes cross faded and shes hallucinating her emotions by her consciousness saying to her to stop being with him (the blue guy) which I think is her consciousness). Then she overcomes the shyness and starts ripping into him (all his negative parts). But as the drugs and/or alcohol wore off she stopped having those ideas thus making her vulnerable to Jeremy.
great bass sound. Also this guy's accent is thick af but it's cool
Cameron Royce where is he from??
Not an accent, it's just the way he sings. He's from Saskatchewan.
He's got a canadian accent eh
cant this be a full length movie' i wanna know what happens next!!!
every now and then i come back to this song, marvel at the composition its lyrics and production, whilst i get sad. it might just be the best song i ever heard.
Where have I seen this before? Oh yeah. Chad VanGaalen. Good to see more animation like this though. I always like seeing this style
I am digging this Andy Shauf guy. His music is unique, it's almost psychedelic. It makes me feel like I'm a low dose of psychedelics. I feel like this guy eats shrooms regularly.
some beers, some weed more of kind of drugs not big deal at all.
If you like him you may like of Montreal too. A good psychedelic music video of theirs to the song Gronlandic Edit is similar to his music video to the Magician. It's like Monty Python on drugs

sad shit everywhere...
Maaaaan this is great! Would be AMAZING to get baked too, I can see myself running through the forest naked/dancing chillin to this song HAHAH!
Let's get more into this storyline yeah.
Does anybody have any theories on why the blue guy starts to turn more alien-like as the video progresses?
I think it’s because he’s drunk
Subconciouse feeding a version of your percived self on the rejection of unrequited love about to come.. you can't help who you fall for unfortunatly and when that person does not feel the same you can't help but think that something is wrong with your self that some how you must be ugly and repulsive alian even.. the things you say when your drunk on drugs and the inhibitors are off could sound creepy and weired to your self feeding the delusion and vision of self.
Loves fuvked up
In an interview Andy Shauf said that Jeremy broke up with Sherry and that was why she's crying. Sherry is mentioned three times on the album: "Quite Like You", "Early to the Party" & "Begin Again."
She says: "You know I've never really met someone like you."
