A video I made for 'Me Wise Magic' using fan cell phone video footage from the 2007 reunion tour over clips from the 1931 John Barrymore film, 'Svengali.'
Don't care what you say, couldn't care less what you think, from a true, long time fan, Me Wise Magic is an absolute masterpiece. Hats off to Roth, his vocals are on point, and the boys harmonies were reminiscent of early VH. Love this song.
Absolutely his voice was still solid. And if this song is any indication of what they coulda done then with a album. Wow. Just glad for all the Van Halen stuff that has been done. Now that sadly eddie is gone. Which I’m still trying to absorb even now ughhh. Truly Sucks rock will never be the same without mr Edward Van Halen.
2007 was the reunion 's year . Losting Dave after 1985 they lost the Mighty. Luckely the come back for another 10 years with only VH classics. THANKS DAVE
Really! It would have been the perfect time to do it. I love those two songs. They should have performed them both live at some point. They ripped my heart out again in 1996.
Roth showing off his 3 octave range and unique voice, Eddie going scorched Earth, Mike with his classic VH backing vocals, and the machine keeping the beat.
I remember driving home from work and when I turned on the radio this was playing and I knew instantly it was Van Halen of course, and that David Lee Roth was singing and I completely freaked!! Van Halen was a ghost at that point and nobody had heard anything from them in a long time....I was so pumped up I couldn't sleep that night. It's an amazing song and I agree with Thrillcekr that it didn't get near the attention it deserved. One of my favorite all-time VH songs because it has all the elements that made Van Halen great. Now we will never know what else was up ol' Eddie's sleeve. Rest in peace Eddie and we look forward to you rockin' us when we get to the other side.
Funny how Me Wise Magic- first tune with Roth in 13 years and Humans Being - last tune with Sammy Hagar for 8 years, turned out to be two of their best IMO.Also thought Can't Get This Stuff No More was pretty decent as well. 👍
Jchurch27 - agreed! I feel this song and "Can't Get This Stuff No More" are the two best VH tunes to have come out since 1984. As they were the only two Dave songs recorded since then, I was equally surprised and disappointed that they weren't on the set list for this tour (I saw them in Philly). Makes no sense to me - it was the perfect chance to play a little more than only previously-played stuff to the obviously Dave-heavy fan base that attended (and are still attending) the reunion shows.
Love the fact that Dave came back and did this song which was included on their greatest hits! lol. And the guitar work is phenomenal! my favorite!! It was like Eddie was trying to say his work was better with Dave than Sammy
Truly their most epic composition. It has everything and the production is phenomenal. All 4 at the top of their game- and what game they brought!!! Deep, devilishly delightful and dirty!
It's crazy how when you're at the end of the line , whether it's age or disease ... you might wish you had handled things differently. Just remember , you have one life and that's it. As a lifetime musician , don't let it all end on a sour note. Go to the double bar line. AI Fine.
My favorite guitar work by Van Halen! OMFG!! Eddie referred to the three guitar parts in this song as the 3 faces of Shamus. Indeed they are. The crescendos, the ultimate orgasm on guitar at the end. LOVE IT !!!
I felt like these songs were excellent closure when they were released. When I saw the 1984 tour it was obvious that Dave and Ed weren't getting along as well as they had in the past, but I still didn't see the breakup coming. The band I grew up on just vanished in the night. After 12 years it was great to hear them again. Even though at the time it seemed like these tracks would be all we ever got, it was a nice bit of closure that finally let us know what the band would sound like in 1996.
i remember when these two (DLR) songs came out in....96, i think? man, i was so excited. then, we never heard anything else. no announcements, nothing. i said to myself that's it, fuck vanroth. after 4:04, wow. this is the VH and Mike band that sounds king.
Such a shame they haven't played this live. Do they realize how many fans love this and Can't Get This Stuff No More? If they should make another album w/ DLR - and rumor is they will - hopefully it's along the lines of Me Wise Magic/Can Get This Stuff No More. A Different Kind Of Truth is a very good album, but some 17 years later, I still find myself listening to these two new songs from 1996. Damn! And I saw VH back in the day on the Fair Warning and Diver Down tours, but these songs kick ass
I agree 100%, being 25 years later now, I remember thinking this was going to be the spark of a new Van Halen era. Their chemistry with DLR was undeniable and shined through on these two songs.
This is when dlr and Van Halen should have reunited for real. Dave’s vocals were great and they coulda made a. All brand new album with this on it. Instead of on a greatest hits type album. Just my opinion. Sammy was good with VH. But this was the time they shoulda took. Dave back. Granted he did come back but if this song was an indication of how a new album woulda sounded like. IT WOULDA BEEN. EPIC !!! Van Halen fan for life. R.I.P. Eddie
A hidden GEM INDEED!! Eddie has come up with soooo many amazing riffs and tones to go with them the guitar world owes Ed a HUGE tip of the hat. Without his passion and love for his guitar I truly believe the rock world would not be what it is today. Ed should get a chunk of Mount Rushmore. Love you Ed , BE WELL PLEASE
Absolutely one of my favorite songs - Love the solid beat but alternate off-beats. Grew up with VH and the Sammy stuff is alright but nothing like VH with Diamond Dave. Always wished they'd get back together. God be good to you Eddie!
I love this song, I can't believe it hasn't gotten more attention. I live it when it came out 20+ years ago, and even today it gets my head a bobbin'. Great music. Love EVH's sound.
Svengali controlled people through confidence and hypnotism. Dave's whole schtick here is getting inside someone's head. "I know what you're thinkin'" and 'Don't you trust me?" and "I know what you need." and "I feel you agreein'." And lots of, "Do you believe?" It seemed like a natural to me.
I've always thought as this song's lyrics are DLR talking to EVH. "you're looking for a sign,; it was right here all the time", or, " I have those same dreams"
Ive loved this song since it came out in 96...This video is just epic! You should be proud.... Very proud... I can only hope the mighty Van Halen find this whilst browsing youtube one day...... Rock on!!!!
Wow. Those scenes from Svengali are fantastic. The first one you showed in particular, where the camera slowly brings his face into view. Creepy as hell. That must have been shocking to an audience in 1931,

Great video and the cuts from the reunion in 08 just hits me because I went to see them Dave still had it,those times have passed for the 80s and 90s bands and I miss it an VH terribly
Thanks. I had the idea of using Svengali a couple of years ago, but obviously the real motivation to go ahead and do it was the reunion. Having some new footage of the guys performing together made it worth doing. I had a lot of fun putting it together. I figured it might be fun for fans since the band hasn't released any more new material since they reunited.
Van Halen just needs to do a new album. New material will make all the difference in the world. I loved their last one. VH 3 had some of Eddie's greatest guitar work. This one happened at around the same time I think.
Yeah, he was a handful even in Australia. Wireless mics would vanish during soundcheck and you'd hear his little voice coming out of the P.A. while everyone searched for him. Random important things would go missing. They started giving him an ice cream cone or something to keep his hands occupied in the hope that maybe it would be possible to get through sound check without a crisis.
Leenie83 - right! A new album of all new stuff... that's what I've been hoping for as the only logical next step in this reunion. A tour is (was - saw it in Philly) great. But and album is really what I think we all want - and "need" as you say! Would be a waste to have finally gotten together and not capture something for the history books.
I’ve heard the argument that Van Hagar outsold Classic VH. Well, here’s what I’ve witnessed in the past 20 years. In a longer time frame, CVH sales did wind up surpassing Van Hagar in the end. Initially, Van Hagar did indeed outsell CVH due to the era in music. See, during that time many hard rock bands started going more synth. With the success of Journey, Survivor, and Foreigner, VH went in that musical direction. DLR was more into the CVH sound and proved that with EEAS album. 1984 was more synth, and that’s why it sold so well. Dave was not happy with the synth pop sound, hence why he quit VH. As time went by, people discovered classic rock from the early 80’s. That is when the CVH albums really started selling well again.
Thanks. You know, as far as Van Halen "appearing in the video" goes, I don't actually have access to them or I'd have had them perform the song for me live. ;-) Really, though, the idea was to kind of present a big chunk of Svengali condensed down to just a few minutes with Van Halen kind of providing the soundtrack and appearing at key moments. The main thing I wanted was the whole guitar solo as sort of dramatic punctuation.
About the time I had come to terms with Sammy Hagar's VH, they put this out and I remembered why I was a fan in the first place.
Don't care what you say, couldn't care less what you think, from a true, long time fan, Me Wise Magic is an absolute masterpiece. Hats off to Roth, his vocals are on point, and the boys harmonies were reminiscent of early VH.

This Song is one of the best Van Halen Masterpieces with Diamond Dave!🎸🎤🥁🇺🇲👍
Eddies Guitar playing at the end of the song is so awesome
They should have just brought DAVE back and did a full album and tour they were sounding great here
They couldn't get along long enough to make $100 million off a tour.

That’s not even accurate. Humans Being was released the same year this came out and before that they had an entire album and tour, Balance, in 1995.
I was about to say the same thing, this was released only a year after Balance which had a bunch of hit singles.
I'd have to agree that this has got to be one of the best VanRoth tunes. So under rated.

It was actually 1996. And yeah, I thought the original (and real) Van Halen was going to reform. Dave had to go and mess it up (again).
