Located near the banks of the Suzhou River, 1000 Trees is a mixed-use project that incorporates 1000 trees and 250,000 plants into the architecture of the building. It was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and meant to look like a mountain covered with trees. Thomas Heatherwick is also the designer behind The Vessel in Hudson Yards. 1,000 Trees was explicitly designed to NOT look like a sterile concrete building that mixed-use developments often resemble. And they did not want this to just blend in with all the high-rise buildings around it. Phase 1 is technically a shopping mall, but it’s meant to be much more than that. Instead, the goal was to humanize architecture and blend art with functionality. So, we ended up with a building that has 1,000 trees placed on top of these concrete columns that go all the way through the building’s structure.

This structure is so remarkable that when I saw it in a thumbnail image in some other video I thought it some kind of computer graphics rendering. Turns out it was an actual structure/building that actually exists.
Lmao true. Just a moment ago watch a video of Saudi mega projects with 3D illustration and none of them are finished. When i saw this video i'd be like "oh another one from China" But this time actually is real lol
这个是一个英国设计师设计的
yeah that's what i thought too. this video doesn't do justice. when i saw it in other video which is a walking tour video i couldn't believe my eyes. it looked like it's from the future.
I like the 1000 tree building. And i will look greener as the trees mature. I support this trend.🎄🌴🌳🌲
Absolutely! Very eco friendly design
Yes hopefully they plant evergreen trees that don’t shed leaves during winter. Otherwise it will look very lifeless during cold months.
@@CoronaryTen Au contraire, it's better not to go for evergreen. The trees will change with the seasons and turn to many hues of red, yellow and brown in the autumn. In winter, the bare branches may seem lifeless. But far from it, the lush green trees that shade and keep the summer cool, turned bare, letting whatever sunshine through, brighten and warm the buildings during the cold dark winter months.
There will always be critics, and they are welcome, but welcoming criticism doesn’t mean you agree with them or that they are right. Some people just give criticism just to give it, just to have a different opinion. I don’t see anything wrong with this new trend in architecture, although I do agree that 1000 trees may not be enough, I do understand that it is an effort and I appreciate the effort and I don’t understand why people are discouraging it. Go green! 🌿🌳🌲🌱
@@urbaninternational concrete building + some pots with plants = eco friendly 🤡
I think 1000 trees (天安千树) looks very pretty on the outside. I'm looking forward to having a closer look at this when I visit Shanghai In September.
I was blown away by the design. Jaw dropping!
i've had a very similar idea for a while. i'm glad there's likeminded people out there bringing something like it to life
I was an expat. While working in Shanghai I learned one thing. Ideas gets implemented. Not years, not months, but by THIS TIME NEXT WEEK!
Today I got a flat tire, from a pothole that took 3 months to fix, They fixed it, made it a speed bump! Here in Texas.
I love it. I wish more buildings would try to look more like these.
Imagine a city like this 😍
officially impressed ♥️♥️♥️
China is AMAZING 🤯 When I was a kid 40 years ago, none of this existed. Incredible what they were able to do in such a short time. They've lifted millions out of poverty while we're widening the weath gap.
absolutely love all the artistic elements showcasing varied artists, the epic inclusion of nature with all the trees and plants, the overall desire to design something that is so aesthetically pleasing as well, AND, encouraging interactions with the community, residents, visitors and tourists, by adding shops and food from quick and easy to luxurious high end, all the patios and walkways, all the brilliant businesses and maybe living spaces too(?).. i think it was an exceptionally brilliant concept that was brought to fruition, beautifully.. i love it✨♥️✨
It's unreal that China can do all this and the USA with similar GDP can't feed It's people or build roads and such
And just a third of China populations. Greed is the center of universe in US.
Definitely can't build roads 🤣

Awesome project! This also follows the vision of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. If we can involve trees and other plants in large-scale architecture in a practical way this is certainly worth doing. The other half of our biology as animals are the plants, not just the oxygen/carbon dioxide cycle.
I really love Heatherwick's work throughout the world. It may come across as not very aesthetic or tokenistic, but it is of good intention. I do appreciate architectural designs that incorporate nature into them, rather than pure architecture by itself. Yes it will look rather odd with trees and plants all over these supposedly sustainable designs, but at least they do provide some good function in both aesthetic and environmental ways, rather than just taking up space and yet another building in a big city.
Love it! It’s very innovative concept and I like the design!
would be nice to see people wearing futuristic fashion in this environment.
I visited this place on a recent trip to Shanghai, it looks beautiful and the surrounding area is top notch too
The 1000 trees architecture makes the skyscrapers without trees out of date...
One of my favorite areas in Shanghai and the mall is really beautiful a collaboration of nature and modern architecture
Beautiful!!
I love this. Some of the angles look really green and pleasing. Love the art as well.
Idk if the trees will grow in size? Would be awesome if the concrete pillars were somewhat covered in green to, like some climbing plants.
Love the idea combining the nature and art.
Whew! Thats amazing. I’d love to see that kind of attention to architecture stateside but we have some other hurdles to get over first.
Agradable de observar desde fuera hacia complejo edilicio, como es agradable observar el paisaje desde el complejo. Dos bellas montañas en plena ciudad.
This was amazing videos very well done"
👏💯It's very cool and trees clean the dirty air.🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳💯
True!
More like unique. There isn't enough trees to make it primarily a green architecture. But having a moderate amount of trees is much better than a few trees.
Amazing design on the paper, and even more astonishing that they can make it happen
Right!
It’s almost perfect. Definitely more eye pleasing than any other structure. But!!! The concept looks better than reality for one reason, the trees are bigger in the concept. I hope they made those planters big enough to accommodate a very large root system and there should be a computer monitoring each trees planter like they use on aquariums. Monitor its soil, water, perfect drainage and even nutrients otherwise the visual anchor will die and give way to concrete. They should have built a crane that hides in the building so they could easy transplant a new full grown tree when one dies
Im so fascinated. And I would love it it also was apartments too.
But I think its really cool and exciting new thinking.
Love it!
Imagine instead of advertising to everyone you will build something, actually building it first then letting people judge for themselves
I LOVE IT!
its beautiful right now but just imagine how it will look when the trees are big. It will be magical.
fr are they gonna switch trees or what
1000 trees resembles so much with the two hills Pão de Açucar located in home city Rio de Janeiro missing only the trams transiting between the top of both hills.
Has the designer Headwick thought of the possibility of the building getting cracked by these trees when they grow bigger?
A very good point , as the roots from the tree will spread, thus crack the structures
The great project!
Beautiful.
Wow, I live in Shanghai and I have never heard of, let alone seen, this building. In my defense, the building is located all the way up by the railway station where few people go unless they have a need to.
Mixing into or keeping 5:25 the natural environment is a goal seen that will become better with vision that develops among the populace.Materials or stone variety keeping it cost affective.
Its just like a dream place 🔥💛
it’s now a decade ago I saw it but never in person and still untouched in design worldwide yes?
Thanks for watching! What are your thoughts on 1,000 Trees??
It will more beautiful if using various rainbow color of colorful led Light like Christmas tree. And the concrete pillars using moving laight of led lamp vertical lines
This is incredible
looks like it will be a lot of work to manage.
I was there last Saturday, the design is indeed incredible but the building stands half empty. Half of the shops are not opened and there were very few people provided that it was Saturday afternoon. It is quite a distance from metro station, maybe that’s the reason? After that I went to Jing’an Temple area and it was bustling with people. I am a little afraid that it won’t survive, or just stays as a white elephant. Without people buildings, even the most astonishing ones makes no sense
I miss SH, used to live cross road from 1 thousand trees.
COOL!
That's literally a concrete jungle! 😍
Some designs encloses the plants inside the building (same effect, like greenhouse, e.g. like for Shanghai Tower). I would say that enclosed designs look better.
china is beautiful and clean
I like the building i love trees.
Great!
No offense, but that way of putting trees in a buildings just makes the buildings look like pots full of trees that barely will grow healthy. And if they do, they better have a way to increase the pot's volume.
Also, good luck to the one in charge of watering them.
Do you live in the Middle Ages? China has the best drones
@@dark_xdark132 Yeah and they are not strangers to accidentes with them.
Also, imagine drones with water hoses.
You never heard of drip auto irrigation system?
How much extra money China have? I have seen so many videos of such structures in Chinese cities. China build these otherworldly architectures, like game companies release new map in the game world. It's really amazing.
Amazing
❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 amazing!!!
That aquarium at @2:10 is so cool and big.
Yes! It's not in the 1000 Trees mall but it's a cool aquarium
That's in Moscow mall. 😅
Innovation had been almost dead in the US for over 20 years!
love it
How they water them?😮
What about when to trim them too?😮
They have chinese slave to do that
pushes the envelope ...think about ways we can start with nature and build nurture within.
I live there, the place already srtarts degrading because of shitty maintenance
They are look bonsai trees on exhibition display.
insane. visionary
중공에서 일본 애니에서 본듯한 개념의 건축물이 지어지고 있다는 것이 우습네요!
태풍이나 강풍으로 피해를 입었을 때 과연 어떻게 조치를 할 지 궁금하네요.
Some of those planters look like they are going to be too small for the roots of the trees though lol I hope they took that in to consideration
Eco-friendly building.😅
However, the imagination to build such buildings should be appreciated.❤
Archtecture with respect to nature i will build an aviary and a waterfall to feel more nature inspired
1000 trees 🌳 🌳 are definitely better than 0 tree
原來設計師是這位人兄THOMAS HEATHERWICK﹗
why do they hire foriegn architectures & not local?
USA and the free world? if they do once again because of treason and corruption. no sane person would ever sell out their own industrial ability
Because they want the buildings to actually stand the test of time
China is twice the size of America and historically the United States of Amery never finisy the train tracks all the way to the west in California. Spreading out is primary tobeing resourceful to the populace and ensuring consistent in services, education and variety of work. Feeling free comes with travel, independence and feeling valuable to society. Traveling thoughout China will become encouraging aspect of government not only in terms of tourism but realizations that come eith traveling one's Country, in search of history, culture or its varients become part of love for Nation and the intention of its governance, for its people. It takes a lot of money but plans to connect the Great Orient and Asia are going to be long term projects. Designs change as the needs of the people change.
Regading the tree apt bbuilding, I would make several large holes through the "mountain" to lighten up the looks of the structure because it looks too imposing and formidable, like something from the Avatar movie.
GOOD
Thomas was definitely high on minecraft
I like it but more to "meh" side than the "oh my" side.
It reminds me of Bobigny's courthouse (in Paris suburbs) with plants on it.
Fair enough!
@@urbaninternational Have a look at "tribunal de Bobigny" or "Bobigny tribunal judiciaire", it's of a kind of 80's cubic neo-brutalism layed out in a type of mount-like / grade shape. You may see a certain familiarity between the two buildings.
The good thing is I find Bobigny's tribunal utterly depressing whereas 1000 trees is more appealing.
But it's really not my preferred type of architecture.
Greetings from Paris.
carefully selected local chinese trees and plants should be used. it will be like the chinese hanging gardens
Maintenance nightmares, It’s going to be dilapidated very quickly.
Muhteşem yaşam alanı🧿🤣😁🤣😁😁🤣👏👏👏👏
очень хорошо - забрал у природы 10 метров, верни их на стройке. забрал 100, 100 верни
IT'S A ME MARIO

Let go China"
China is powerful country worldwide*
wtf they do to Elmo?
Watering them is waste of energy
It is not the best but better than many ugly high-rise condos and same height, look like jungle concert walls blocked the blue sky and sunlight.
lol ive seen that when i walked past
legit looks like something a 10 year old would build in minecraft 🤣
I think it looks really tacky and outdated in its design choices already. It would be an impressive Minecraft build I’ll give it that.
Cite of Babylon like
It not finished yet ?
Apakah terispirasi dari mesjit 99 kubah yang ada di makassar 🤔
Bro China is kicking our ass
Hahaha
It probably rains enough so that they don't have to water the trees. 🌳🏡🌲🌳
Hahah that could be true!
The planter boxes are supported by columns which actually holding the drip irrigation set-up.
So many buzzwords. The only architecture is the traditional one, not all these ghettos.

I have more trees on my acreage...
