One of the best English grammar books ever! It's the base for my English lessons.
I agree with your first sentence but not your second. Raymond Murphy says very clearly in the interview that he wrote the books for "self-study, outside the classroom". So they are not pedagogical, not a methodology or an approach, and they are not intended as coursebooks either. The biggest takeway from this interview is that that teachers inform themselves of how languages are learned. For this I'd recommend Lightbown & Spader.

Mr_Murphy's quite amazing approach to inspire the students and their skills in English grammar .As far as I noticed that in the field of English . I saw a lot of English grammar books and I read them most of the time, but I really didn't get anything positive which I had deserved from book. After two years I was fed up with books as I assumed that I will not be able to do so in English grammar. Later, year I met with a senior teacher of English I shared my ideas with him and asked him how to learn English? In answer he replied me don't worry and he suggested me that you should buy a English grammar book which is an elixir of English language and grammar that's Mr-Murphy's English grammar after reading that book I felt that I'm really lucky to have met my fate. I suggest all students they should buy intermediate English grammar by Murphy's as they meet their fate without any anxiety

*I started learning English seriously back in the fall of 1988. After I finished the three dialogue books of New American Streamline by myself, I had no idea which book I should use to learn English Grammar by myself. Then, just by coincidence, in one English lecture, I saw your book on my English teacher desk in Paris in spring 1989. I asked her for her permission to have a look at it. She let me do so and advised me to use it. I took its reference and went straight to la FNAC Montparnasse in Paris to buy it (I rationalized my food spending to buy it). I have to say and admit very proudly so that the first edition (1985) of your great book made me learn English grammar so fast and efficiently in the 1989 summer. I went through the whole book, about 120 units or so if I recall, in less than two months by myself. I was cruising through it with no speed limit. Your English grammar book makes English a “plug and chuck” or “a cakewalk” language compared to other languages. In fact, your book not only made me jump many English classes since I was challenging them by taking exams, but also made me score big in the TOEFL exam back in 1989/90 to get my Bachelor's degree and the GRE exam to get my Master's degree…*
*I have to say thank you, Sir, a million times!! Your great book was certainly a huge morale boost for me to learn English very fast. It sure shortened the time I needed to learn English and go on with my academic studies. I actually still have your book after 31 years now and will keep in my library to the last day of my life. What an incredible story! I could write the same as you. This book helped me to learn English 22 years ago and today I teach my nephew using the ebook edition of English Grammar in Use- the read one!

The Murphy grammar books are actually probably more useful for native English speaker teachers than students. The danger of being a native English speaking teacher is that you know the grammar instinctively, and have probably never had to learn it, let alone teach it. This makes it extremely hard to explain relatively simple concepts in a manner that a learner can understand. I got a degree in linguistics and a CELTA certificate, but I learned more about English grammar from Mr. Murphy's books than from those programmes of study..
