Americans, unlike Europeans, live in a bubble surrounded by more Americans... and then oceans. Being French and knowing something about Spain or Germany, is on par with being from Florida and knowing things about Texas or Georgia. Relevance dictates personal knowledge.
And most Western Europeans I’ve met have told me they know very little about Eastern Europe. People I meet from Southern African countries usually don’t have in depth knowledge about West African countries. Everyone lives in a bubble to some extent.

I'm an American as well, and I grew up literally down the street from the southern border. Most of my friends growing up were Mexican, and I'm half-Filipino(some of the loudest asians ever). Needless to say, when I visited Japan, I realized my speaking voice was basically just shouting to them. hahaha
I've heard of it but I still pronounce it wrong. Because it sounds like they're going for "filet", the French word. But here, we don't use that word. We use "fillet", like a "chicken fillet" or a "fillet of fish". And it doesn't sound like "fil-A", it sounds like "fill it".

The US Constitution does not grant people rights, it is supposed to prevent the government from infringing upon their innate rights, because the Founders knew that the biggest threat to liberty is the government itself. The US is pretty big. The interesting thing when our representative was talking was I was like that’s not all of us. You pretty much need two or three people from the United States in different places to get a more full view of the United States.
Aussies also say sorry instead of excuse me if we bump into someone by accident. If someone said excuse me in that situation, I'd think, "Why, do you need to get past me?" We usually only say excuse me if we need someone to get out of our way or we're trying to get their attention.
In Ireland this is the same, but even to get someone's attention, we usually say "sorry" instead. Like if we were calling a waiter or a staff member somewhere to ask a question, we'd often say "Sorry, could I have a ___ please?" for example.
I’m American and I believe stupid people exist in every country including my own. But then one must ask how they define “stupid”. I have met people from different countries who weren’t fully literate in the native language and had little formal education. Typically anywhere in the world whenever people are poor they tend to have less access to and fewer resources to travel. Also there is a difference between don’t know and don’t care. I read at least 10 news websites a day and the tv in my office is usually tuned to a cable news network. But that is for work. I only have a passing personal interest in other countries’ politics and I don’t appreciate non-Americans trying to engage me in conversations about US politics which has happened a lot. I don’t ask non-Americans about their countries’ policies nor do I tell them my unsolicited opinions on what their countries do. Also I don’t really agree about the fast food thing but maybe it depends on where you live, your situation and your cultural background. I eat out a lot. I don’t eat fast food a lot. For one thing FF doesn’t tend to serve a lot of the foods we eat that require more preparation time like meat loaf, pot roast, ribs, jambalaya to name a few. I grew up eating Shepherds Pie. However, I don’t have children. I find that most people I know who have children tend to cook a lot. We have people in the country who are receiving government aid to buy food. Fast food restaurants don’t take food stamps. I highly doubt most people can afford to take two adults and four kids to McDonald’s or wherever every day. It’s the fact that we have so many people that these companies can do a lot of business but doesn’t mean everyone constantly goes.

A similar story from San Diego. I was there for a business meeting and got on an elevator in a suit (I am East Coast). At the pool level, a guy gets on bare naked from the waist up, wearing a towel around his lower half. Smiling, he says, "Man that felt good. You should take a dip. It's so hot out." I assume he was wearing a bathing suit, but my East-Coast sensibility would have prevented me from getting on an elevator, dripping, in a business hotel. The key word for Americans is "informal." It's a code that we live by. There are just different versions of the code.

Part of the issue is that the idea of a "well-rounded education" or liberal arts and humanities has passed out of relevance in the U.S. I say that without value judgement, really. The U.S. is competitive, and people with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) competence and expertise are making all of the money, it seems. So, really, generalized humanities topics are seen as pointless and unnecessary. Sure, these people are going to lose on quiz shows. But they stand to get the big house, car and boat down the line. Can you blame them if they don't know a Plantagenet from a pierogi?

I know many Americans (I am American) who are very smart and know nothing about their own history or geography or other countries, yet they became incredible surgeons or lawyers, or started some successful charities. There is a large segment of the American population that feel like intelligence should be directed towards a career, especially a money making career and why focus on things like history and geography that won't feed your kids. I'm not one of them or I wouldn't be watching this, but I have many acquaintances who are outstanding "in their field" in areas that I could never be (like medicine) and can't find their own state on a US map, "Who cares? I'm an award winning surgeon."

I just wanted to bring this up in connection with the semi-automatic gun mentioned, a semi-automatic gun in fact does not fire loads of bullets in a second, it's one bullet to one trigger pull. An automatic gun shoots loads of bullets but those are banned in the US.

She just meant that you could pull the trigger (and subsequently fire rounds) multiple times a second, whereas something like a bolt action rifle can only be fired once every two seconds or so.
Yes and they were weapons of war until WW2 probably after as well along side semi automatic fire arms and automatic firearms. The military has done studies and it shows that more bullets doesn’t equal more killing. The question was stupid. More people are killed by cars, food, and I’d be willing to bet things like medication. The idea that something should be banned or tightly controlled because it can be dangerous is silly.
Not an American here (Albertan/Canadian), but the reason for the right to bear arms is to prevent governments from eroding citizen's rights without their approval. It is even mentioned within the full clause of the second amendment.
That idea died when tanks and fighter jets rolled off the assembly lines. Do you really think a US militia made up of citizens with guns can hold off a well-trained Army with tanks, a Navy long range missiles, an Air force with highly advanced fighter jets and bombers, Marines who specialize in stealth combat, all of whom are led by generals with combat experience? @@bradcofo Yes because the the government would be too concerned about collateral damage to use their full arsenal. Armed citizens vastly outweigh the military. Our armed forces don't excel with guerilla warfare, and that's what we would have. They could never fully know who is a combatant. We were "no match" for the British but we used that underestimation to our advantage and kicked their asses out of our country. Even if we truly had no chance to stand against the government, that is all the more reason to hold true to our rights as stated in the constitution. Never roll over and let tyranny rule.
@J.Ruseva I honestly don't remember being tested on the constitution. But based on how my school taught stuff, they teach you one thing, test you at the end of the week or so then completely move on to something else until the final at the end of the year where the whole thing is multiple choice

Yeah, I just got to comment on something, as no matter where you stand on the gun debate, people should make their arguments with truths. For example: semi-automatic weapons (which a large portion of handguns and rifles are in the U.S., btw) don’t spit out a thousands of bullets in a minute (that’s fully automatic). Semi-automatics are one trigger pull, one bullet. I’ve yet to see anyone who can pull a trigger anywhere near a thousand times in a minute. And you can only fire the number of rounds loaded in the magazine (NOT clip); I’ve never seen a magazine that holds thousands of rounds before-that would be too large to be practical. Now, you can argue that no one should even have THAT capacity, and you have your right to that belief. But please, use facts to convey those beliefs. And, no, I’m not a gun nut-I’ve never owned a firearm.

Because if they are, maybe they should be reported to law enforcement because those with those types of weapons probably possess them illegally. You can’t purchase anti tank rifles or rockets in any gun store I’ve ever been in, and to purchase a “machine-gun” (I’m assuming you mean a fully automatic weapon) you must have s stringent background check that takes quite a while and is very, very expensive. Was just thinking the same. The absurd part is that a lot of European countries are fine with people owning semi-autos for hunting/target shooting. America has issues for sure. But dishonest discussions is not the answer. Machine guns used in crimes are extremely rare in the US. While here in my home country (Sweden) they are used more commonly.

5:33 -- Shannon described a fully automatic weapon ("a ton of bullets in a second"), not a semiautomatic. All that means is one squeeze of the trigger = one bullet. Fully automatic are extremely difficult to get and very heavily regulated since the 1980s. Also, look up "journalists try to buy g-- same day, unable to do so." You'll find any number of stories & videos along those lines. It's so disheartening when people literally don't know what the issues are or how the hardware functions, then tell the rest of the country how to think in their ignorance.
Not only are fully auto heavily regulated, in half the states they are out right banned. If you live in the half that still allows fully auto guns, you get scrutinized if you own property in one of the states that out right bans them. Good luck getting the permit to purchase them. On top of that you can only buy from a select group of fully auto weapons (has to be made prior to 1986), the quantity of which depletes every year due to wear and tear, which then drives the price up on the available fully auto firearms. For all intents and purposes it's impossible to own fully auto firearms. And yet the myth persists that they are "everywhere" and "easy to buy".
If there is one thing the average American could be accused of complete stupidity on, it's gun laws. So many lies out there as partisans try to shepherd the sheep away from their essential rights.
As a French, I am seeing how close we are to British people in the field of human interactions - yes, read again this revolutionary sentence and think twice about it, because I think it is usually really underestimated (old rivalry between bot nations, romance and german languages, and so forth...). We use "pardon" as they do for "sorry", and it is considered rude to directly jump into the conversation. Of course, like always, there are many differences between places, social groups and so on. But I discovered these last years how easy it was for me to understand the reactions of British people in my professional daily life.

I have American, central European and Arab influence (lived there and have family from there) and this would be so different in all of these. in Central Europe (can't vouch for other parts of Europe) that literally means how are you and the person will tell you exactly how they feel like how you said. in the us you say how are you to literally everyone you meet and it even requires no reply. when asked this same question in arabic you always thank god and always say you're good (even if you're not) and then the question is repeated several times and we ask about how the family is and how their health is etc. (never-ending conversation).

Those things, unlike firearms, have more than one use/function. A firearm's only function is to harm someone or something. Even in "defense", a firearm can only do so by harming someone or something. Many Americans do not find tha acceptable anymore.
Cars are designed to transport people. Alcohol is a by-product of a tasty drink. Piloting a plane (at least a commercial one) is meant for transportation. Firearms are meant for one thing only: to kill or at least injure. That puts firearms in a morally distinct category. I am not advocating banning them (they have a role under controlled circumstances), but every single person needs to view them clearly for what they are: instruments of violence. And every person who owns such a weapon needs to take the responsibility extremely seriously. By extension, every society worth the name has an interest in making sure that people do that. If you call that gun control, so be it. After all, many states have a "highway patrol" to make sure people drive responsibly, so why should firearms be exempt from regulation?

For example, if there weren’t deer hunters then the population would be so out of control that we would have even more people crashing their vehicles into and possibly dying after hitting deer than we do now. However, if everyone stopped drinking alcohol it wouldn’t have any negative consequences other than for the businesses that sell it. Also firearms are used for protection from animals not just people.

@@johnalden5821 I never said no regulations whatsoever, just saying those laws only work against the law abiding and criminals by definition don't follow laws, the most gun strick states have the most gun deaths and rapes. Most/many rape victims say that they probably wouldn't have been raped if they had one and most rape survivors buy one after they were raped, guns are the great equalizer and actually protect women more than man since women are generally weaker on average.

It's far more likely that someone survives a knife attack than being shot. Every other first world nation's people grew up long ago and learned that unrestricted arming of private citizens is insane without a tangibly provable imminent need.

This is exactly whats wrong people aren't educated about something but still try to educate others. A semi automatic weapon is not the same as a automatic weapon. Semi automatic means you have to pull the trigger to shoot. So its impossible to shoot several rounds a sec with a semi automatic weapon which also includes pistols. So that part just sounded misinformed and spreads more misinformation

It is a very difficult reality for many Americans to accept that their country has many customs and traditions thanks to other countries and that in reality, the United States is a point of convergence of many cultures that coexist with each other. A simple example is the cowboys... for an average citizen of the United States, the cowboys were born in the United States and they are the maximum historical representation for the United States and something that many Americans believe with pride... but the reality is that the cowboys were originally born in Spain and their lifestyle was preserved in countries like the United States and Mexico... in deserted places for raising cattle and field work. Even with all this, another reality is that without the United States there would be so many things that would not exist today, since the United States has influenced both directly and indirectly in many events.

I thought the UK was famous for having a lot of their celebrities acting in American films. I've had a shock with watching an American movie or show and finding out an actor I like wasn't American because I presumed they were since they were on an American show/movie.

I've heard of it but I still pronounce it wrong. Because it sounds like they're going for "filet", the French word. But here, we don't use that word. We use "fillet", like a "chicken fillet" or a "fillet of fish". And it doesn't sound like "fil-A", it sounds like "fill it".

I am stating that one of my parents was English and I grew up with a strong mixture of both cultures. It's an important distinction. It's not only my great great grandpa who is English, but my mother.
That fact that she thinks the Constitutional right to bear arms is about self defense is why she doesn't understand how people can support it. The US Constitution does not grant people rights, it is supposed to prevent the government from infringing upon their innate rights, because the Founders knew that the biggest threat to liberty is the government itself. The first amendment is the same (and all others); it does not grant the right to free speech or religion, it prohibits the Congress from passing laws that curtail those freedoms.

The US is pretty big. The interesting thing when our representative was talking was I was like that’s not all of us. You pretty much need two or three people from the United States in different places to get a more full view of the United States.
Aussies also say sorry instead of excuse me if we bump into someone by accident. If someone said excuse me in that situation, I'd think, "Why, do you need to get past me?" We usually only say excuse me if we need someone to get out of our way or we're trying to get their attention.

In Ireland this is the same, but even to get someone's attention, we usually say "sorry" instead. Like if we were calling a waiter or a staff member somewhere to ask a question, we'd often say "Sorry, could I have a ___ please?" for example.

I’m American and I believe stupid people exist in every country including my own. But then one must ask how they define “stupid”. I have met people from different countries who weren’t fully literate in the native language and had little formal education. Typically anywhere in the world whenever people are poor they tend to have less access to and fewer resources to travel. Also there is a difference between don’t know and don’t care. I read at least 10 news websites a day and the tv in my office is usually tuned to a cable news network. But that is for work. I only have a passing personal interest in other countries’ politics and I don’t appreciate non-Americans trying to engage me in conversations about US politics which has happened a lot. I don’t ask non-Americans about their countries’ policies nor do I tell them my unsolicited opinions on what their countries do.
Also I don’t really agree about the fast food thing but maybe it depends on where you live, your situation and your cultural background. I eat out a lot. I don’t eat fast food a lot. For one thing FF doesn’t tend to serve a lot of the foods we eat that require more preparation time like meat loaf, pot roast, ribs, jambalaya to name a few. I grew up eating Shepherds Pie. However, I don’t have children. I find that most people I know who have children tend to cook a lot. We have people in the country who are receiving government aid to buy food. Fast food restaurants don’t take food stamps. I highly doubt most people can afford to take two adults and four kids to McDonald’s or wherever every day. It’s the fact that we have so many people that these companies can do a lot of business but doesn’t mean everyone constantly goes.

I was shocked. That is unheard of in Sweden and northern Europe in general.
A similar story from San Diego. I was there for a business meeting and got on an elevator in a suit (I am East Coast). At the pool level, a guy gets on bare naked from the waist up, wearing a towel around his lower half. Smiling, he says, "Man that felt good. You should take a dip. It's so hot out." I assume he was wearing a bathing suit, but my East-Coast sensibility would have prevented me from getting on an elevator, dripping, in a business hotel. The key word for Americans is "informal." It's a code that we live by. There are just different versions of the code.

Part of the issue is that the idea of a "well-rounded education" or liberal arts and humanities has passed out of relevance in the U.S. I say that without value judgement, really. The U.S. is competitive, and people with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) competence and expertise are making all of the money, it seems. So, really, generalized humanities topics are seen as pointless and unnecessary. Sure, these people are going to lose on quiz shows. But they stand to get the big house, car and boat down the line. Can you blame them if they don't know a Plantagenet from a pierogi?

I know many Americans (I am American) who are very smart and know nothing about their own history or geography or other countries, yet they became incredible surgeons or lawyers, or started some successful charities. There is a large segment of the American population that feel like intelligence should be directed towards a career, especially a money making career and why focus on things like history and geography that won't feed your kids. I'm not one of them or I wouldn't be watching this, but I have many acquaintances who are outstanding "in their field" in areas that I could never be (like medicine) and can't find their own state on a US map, "Who cares? I'm an award winning surgeon."
That's a very narrow mindset. Some people really like staying at one place for their whole life and doing the same things every single day. Such a life just seems soooo boring to me.

I just wanted to bring this up in connection with the semi-automatic gun mentioned, a semi-automatic gun in fact does not fire loads of bullets in a second, it's one bullet to one trigger pull. An automatic gun shoots loads of bullets but those are banned in the US.

Not an American here (Albertan/Canadian), but the reason for the right to bear arms is to prevent governments from eroding citizen's rights without their approval. It is even mentioned within the full clause of the second amendment.

Our armed forces don't excel with guerilla warfare, and that's what we would have. They could never fully know who is a combatant. We were "no match" for the British but we used that underestimation to our advantage and kicked their asses out of our country. Even if we truly had no chance to stand against the government, that is all the more reason to hold true to our rights as stated in the constitution. Never roll over and let tyranny rule.

Yeah, I just got to comment on something, as no matter where you stand on the gun debate, people should make their arguments with truths.
For example: semi-automatic weapons (which a large portion of handguns and rifles are in the U.S., btw) don’t spit out a thousands of bullets in a minute (that’s fully automatic). Semi-automatics are one trigger pull, one bullet. I’ve yet to see anyone who can pull a trigger anywhere near a thousand times in a minute. And you can only fire the number of rounds loaded in the magazine (NOT clip); I’ve never seen a magazine that holds thousands of rounds before-that would be too large to be practical.
Now, you can argue that no one should even have THAT capacity, and you have your right to that belief. But please, use facts to convey those beliefs.
And, no, I’m not a gun nut-I’ve never owned a firearm.

Because if they are, maybe they should be reported to law enforcement because those with those types of weapons probably possess them illegally. You can’t purchase anti tank rifles or rockets in any gun store I’ve ever been in, and to purchase a “machine-gun” (I’m assuming you mean a fully automatic weapon) you must have s stringent background check that takes quite a while and is very, very expensive.
As far as soft rules and no controls, that is not true. If you’d like to see facts about this, I’m happy to point out some UA-cam accounts that will give you these facts.

Was just thinking the same. The absurd part is that a lot of European countries are fine with people owning semi-autos for hunting/target shooting. America has issues for sure. But dishonest discussions is not the answer. Machine guns used in crimes are extremely rare in the US. While here in my home country (Sweden) they are used more commonly.
I was suprised that she had no idea why we have the 2nd amendment and why it's so important. The fact that people misuse their weapons is a different thing.
5:33 -- Shannon described a fully automatic weapon ("a ton of bullets in a second"), not a semiautomatic. All that means is one squeeze of the trigger = one bullet. Fully automatic are extremely difficult to get and very heavily regulated since the 1980s. Also, look up "journalists try to buy g-- same day, unable to do so." You'll find any number of stories & videos along those lines. It's so disheartening when people literally don't know what the issues are or how the hardware functions, then tell the rest of the country how to think in their ignorance.
Not only are fully auto heavily regulated, in half the states they are out right banned. If you live in the half that still allows fully auto guns, you get scrutinized if you own property in one of the states that out right bans them. Good luck getting the permit to purchase them. On top of that you can only buy from a select group of fully auto weapons (has to be made prior to 1986), the quantity of which depletes every year due to wear and tear, which then drives the price up on the available fully auto firearms. For all intents and purposes it's impossible to own fully auto firearms. And yet the myth persists that they are "everywhere" and "easy to buy".
Really only the military has fully automatic weapons.
If there is one thing the average American could be accused of complete stupidity on, it's gun laws. So many lies out there as partisans try to shepherd the sheep away from their essential rights.

As a French, I am seeing how close we are to British people in the field of human interactions - yes, read again this revolutionary sentence and think twice about it, because I think it is usually really underestimated (old rivalry between bot nations, romance and german languages, and so forth...). We use "pardon" as they do for "sorry", and it is considered rude to directly jump into the conversation. Of course, like always, there are many differences between places, social groups and so on. But I discovered these last years how easy it was for me to understand the reactions of British people in my professional daily life.

I have American, central European and Arab influence (lived there and have family from there) and this would be so different in all of these. in Central Europe (can't vouch for other parts of Europe) that literally means how are you and the person will tell you exactly how they feel like how you said. in the us you say how are you to literally everyone you meet and it even requires no reply. when asked this same question in arabic you always thank god and always say you're good (even if you're not) and then the question is repeated several times and we ask about how the family is and how their health is etc. (never-ending conversation).

Most of the world has been at war with/declared independence from Britain at one time or another, the us is the only country with an unhealthy obsession with guns.
I'm an American, and I always like to use the weather as a beginning conversation piece. Works for me.
5:12 Cars are dangerous but people drive them, alcohol is dangerous but people drink it, smoking, piloting or fighting in planes, and I can go on and on. Would love to be on and go over the stats.
Those things, unlike firearms, have more than one use/function. A firearm's only function is to harm someone or something. Even in "defense", a firearm can only do so by harming someone or something. Many Americans do not find tha acceptable anymore.
Cars are designed to transport people. Alcohol is a by-product of a tasty drink. Piloting a plane (at least a commercial one) is meant for transportation. Firearms are meant for one thing only: to kill or at least injure. That puts firearms in a morally distinct category.
I am not advocating banning them (they have a role under controlled circumstances), but every single person needs to view them clearly for what they are: instruments of violence. And every person who owns such a weapon needs to take the responsibility extremely seriously. By extension, every society worth the name has an interest in making sure that people do that. If you call that gun control, so be it. After all, many states have a "highway patrol" to make sure people drive responsibly, so why should firearms be exempt from regulation?
@@jwb52z9 Many Americans use firearms for hunting which serves the purpose of feeding their families. For example, if there weren’t deer hunters then the population would be so out of control that we would have even more people crashing their vehicles into and possibly dying after hitting deer than we do now. However, if everyone stopped drinking alcohol it wouldn’t have any negative consequences other than for the businesses that sell it. Also firearms are used for protection from animals not just people.

@@johnalden5821 I never said no regulations whatsoever, just saying those laws only work against the law abiding and criminals by definition don't follow laws, the most gun strick states have the most gun deaths and rapes. Most/many rape victims say that they probably wouldn't have been raped if they had one and most rape survivors buy one after they were raped, guns are the great equalizer and actually protect women more than man since women are generally weaker on average.

Semi automatic means you have to pull the trigger to shoot. So its impossible to shoot several rounds a sec with a semi automatic weapon which also includes pistols. It is the first time I realized that the US has so much more body language while they talk in comparison to the UK.
She should have said alot of (not all) Americans are content at being ignorant about another cultures (this also includes the ones within the US itself) and figures that the world revolves around the US, which it does not....and yes I am a American myself so I know how ignorant some people are and they're happy to stay that way.
It is a very difficult reality for many Americans to accept that their country has many customs and traditions thanks to other countries and that in reality, the United States is a point of convergence of many cultures that coexist with each other. A simple example is the cowboys... for an average citizen of the United States, the cowboys were born in the United States and they are the maximum historical representation for the United States and something that many Americans believe with pride... but the reality is that the cowboys were originally born in Spain and their lifestyle was preserved in countries like the United States and Mexico... in deserted places for raising cattle and field work. Even with all this, another reality is that without the United States there would be so many things that would not exist today, since the United States has influenced both directly and indirectly in many events.
@@titanx7668 tbf cowboy culture is vastly different in the US than in Spain as it had influence and change by mostly black, native and mexican cowboys, what you said is true but also a lot of things that were not originally american and were brought to the USA by immigrants over time evolve and become distinctly American, like baseball or New York pizza which varies greatly from italian pizza
