Good point, look after your health. I'm 60 and a couple of years ago had excruciating pains in the stomach, on and off for months but this morning I was vomiting too.
I went to hospital and after a series of tests they found I had stomach ulcers that had grown over the gastric outlet, leading to a gastric outlet obstruction.
The doctor said he "just"needed to insert a tube down my nose. Along came a female and male nurse to insert it. They started putting it down my nose and I started chocking and chocking, I thought I wasn't going to get my breath back! I constantly dry retched and my eyes watered and this girl in the video where she said her nose runs a little, not so with me, it ran a lot and the threading of the tube seemed to take ages. That was the first one.
Because of the amount of ulcers, I had to have an endoscopy, 4 actually because each time they tried to open the gastric outlet, the tissue around the area would break so after 4 endoscopy's it was decided to remove 30% of my stomach.
Fast forward 2 years, another gastric outlet obstruction, luckily they were able to suck the food out of my stomach during the endoscopy.
Last week I had pains and vomiting, really bad vomiting so ended up in hospital again. Dr said they wanted to insert a NG tube, I said, NO, sorry, I could never go through that again but the problem I had was different, this time it's a bowel obstruction caused by scar tissue from the operation resulting in able to poop.
I came home for 2 days because they thought it had corrected itself but I started vomiting again.
So I have go back to hospital today to have a tube pushed down my nose and into my stomach, I am petrified.
This girl makes it look so easy. One thing I'll be asking for is a glass of water like she had to help it down.
So look after yourself, a lot of things can go wrong as you get older.
As someone with first an NG tube I want to tell you a story and thank you for saving my life.
I am a Nurse and I nearly died from starvation because of Gastroparesis. I placed my first NG tube because of the “straight on” technique you show in this video. I never gagged or coughed with this method.
I have since taught 10 nurses in the hosp who were stunned that I placed my own NG tube. I have also taught 5 doctors. I also show them your video and 2 of the hospitals I have been in have downloaded your video to use as a teaching tool. Thank you from this tubie to you for making my experience better.

The secret behind pushing it straight backwards and not up is that although it looks like it from the outside - your nasal cavity doesn't actually go up but straight backwards! :)

what a brave and beautiful young woman. The times I had emergency insertion of ng tubes, it was horrid. A nightmare. I was far too compromised to do that myself (near death, actually) and after 40 years in Nursing, I learned a lot today. Echo 9970 Wow. I do not have a feeding tube (and I’m so thankful to not need one) and I had no idea that you could swallow it. Interesting story, and I’m so sorry that the doctor did it so wrong.
I used a straw with a cup of icy water as it almost numbed my throat & I could just keep on swallowing it down until like you we got to my measured length. Plus we used a syringe to insert a small amount of air into the ng tube as it meant we could hear it gurgle in the water in my belly (with a stethoscope) so I knew it was in the right place. Great tips!!

Thank you for posting this. I'm 58 years old, and have had several major surgeries. I've also given birth twice. But the most terrifying thing, by far, was having a tube inserted in my nose down to my stomach. It got caught in my sinus cavity, then I kept gagging on it till we finally got it down, where it would branch off and curl up in a corner of my stomach, so they'd have to pull it partway out then go back in again. After three times of doing that, I threw up so much mucus that it scared the nurses. I was crying, throwing up, hysterical, and terrified. So they decided to remove the tube. Then my throat just locked up on the tube, with about 4 inches of it rolled up in my mouth. Getting it out was a nightmare. This was 8 years ago, and it still scares me.
Seeing you do it so calmly *to yourself* while you explain what you're doing is absolutely stunning to me. I can't even imagine doing that. But after seeing it, I think that if I ever have to have it done again, I might be a bit less terrified about the process. I thank you for that. Blessings to you, and I hope you are able to continue to touch others' lives this way as well.

I came across your video looking at Tube Feeding videos. I had an NG tube before I got my PEG when I was in the hospital for pneumonia. Nursing students put it in. It was one of the most excruciating experiences I have ever had. I had the NG tube for about 10 days. It was painful when I moved certain ways. I now have a PEG and I will be using it exclusively as I am now NPO due to aspiration pneumonia. I am doing well now. I have adapted well to my PEG. But seeing you demonstrate putting in you NG tube was juat amazing to me. You have it together very well. I salute you. I have had my PEG, permanently now juat over a year. Not many people even know I have it not that I mind, but I just don't want to be treated any differently. I have been astounded at how even doctors react to it. "I am sorry Mr. Miller!" I always say, "Please don't be. I am fine and doing well now" I fought getting a PEG kicking and screaming. Pneumonia was gonna kill me. I could eat or I could breathe. I choose to breath. I look and feel better than I have in years. I am sorry I am rambling. Your video is insprational to me. You are so charming and beautiful. I love your accent. I am from Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Most people sound differently here. Have a great day!

I used to have to have a NG tube as I got cancer when I was 10 and because of the chemo I lost so much weight I went down to 3 stone could see all my bones but the tubes are horrible but it saved my life, your so brave doing it yourself xx
Thank you so much for sharing your techniques and your very personal experience with inserting an NG tube! I’m a student nurse, and this anecdote will help relieve the anxiety of both the patient and the practitioner as we progress through this journey in healthcare together. Kudos to you.
As a former, but unfortunately very experienced, anorexic who's had been inserted with a feeding tube over 300 times (then I stopped counting) I can say this technique is the very best. Have a slight upwards, 45-90° angle and SWALLOW several gulps during the process, and it's easy peasy. Eventually I even let the nursing students try and I guided them as they did it. I hated to get the nutrition in the tube, because I was obviously very eating disordered, but I was totally fine with the tube. I prefered it over eating orally, so I guess that tells you something about how difficult it is to eat for an anorexic. They pulled it out in between the feedings, so usually I had it 2-3 times per day and without it I would've died several times. So thank god these feeding tubes exist!! I have a hate-love for them, because they remind me of those horrible years, but I owe them my life.

Hi hi, nursing student here, too. Just wanted to comment on the metal wire in the tube and say that it’s also used for X-rays within hospitals as a way of detection on whether the NGT is in the stomach or lungs. Great video!
Hey Kristy, this is an excellent video. I'm an ICU nurse with 4+ years of experience and have to place various NG tubes on a pretty frequent basis. What you have shared here includes things that took me years to figure out how to make better for my patients. Thank you for taking the time to share and help others out there. The only other things I can suggest: one was already mentioned, about trying to tuck your chin down. The other is to possibly try using a straw when you drink the water. That's only if the cup is getting in your way. My patients are usually a little reclined and not having to insert the tube themselves, so hand positioning is certainly different. :) Oh, one other thing - if you pull the stylet (the wire) and can't get it back in, try putting the insertion end of the tube in some ice water while it has a bit of a bend in it. That will help it hold the bend to make it easier to drop down. It won't get the stylet back in for you, but can still help with placement. Great work and thank you again for sharing your knowledge and experience!

There is no real gag reflex when it goes through the nose ;), thats why we are also able to insert nasal airways in fully alert patients without loosing their airway.
You are amazing! Do you check it by using a stetoscope or just by confirming stomach flurid by aspirating?

Not physically, but mentally, if I think about it, it makes me gag, Just watching this was making me gag, but I have a way overly sensitive gag reflex, and it can be set off without physical stimulus easily. Props to this girl! I couldn't do it.
Wow! I was in the hospital with a bowel obstruction and had my first NG tube experience, mine did not go as well as yours did. The ER nurses need to watch this. Mine hurt every time I swallowed and it was in for 4 days. No fun, but it worked and I didn’t have to have surgery. God Bless!
I remember back home in Cuba when I was doing nursing they taught me to measure it on the spot. You place the start point from your lips to your ear lobe and then the following piece from your ear lobe to your epigastric region that is supposed to define the length from your nose to your stomach more or less . It worked with the patient I did it with.

When patients like you who bravely explain a process that most people will never endure and having to live with with an NG tube just don’t understand how truly blessed that they are. Having had several NG insertions myself, they are not at all fun. They are a necessary life-saving implement. Hang in there brave lady.

My mum had hers put in the other week and the Healthcare Assistant was so rough. She forced it in as hard as she could and didn’t care how much pain my mum was in. Little did she know she was hitting the back of my mums trachea and my mum physically couldn’t breathe. She was gagging and trying to fight the HCA off until eventually she pulled it out. Some people don’t deserve to work in healthcare - you have shown me how it should be done, when I’m in hospital with her next. Thank you x
Well I tried... and IT WORKED! I just let the swallow mechanism pull down the tube rather than try and push it down as u swallowed. My ph was about 5... but I've been taking lansoprazole, but the volume of aspirate and colour was definitely markedly different to chest aspirate, a further indicator it was in the correct place.
I think the only thing I find weird that i don't like is the cool sensation of flushing (which I prevent by using warm water) or the cool feeling when the pump pushes fluid through from the bag, but it's bearable as it's on only a few millilitres at a time. Thank you 😊

So today i had to put an NG down for the first time as I shall be feeding long term.
I can’t tell you how much this video helped me out, it went straight down, no problems what so ever, there was no trauma involved at all... as easy as plucking my eyebrows.. thank you for this video huge help!

I have been a nurse for a while, 23 years. Here is some more info on NGs for feeding and suction. The best hints I got to put down NGs was by a seasoned nurse during my new grad days, and they served me well. With NGs, especially on patients who are unconscious or close to getting that way, extremes are your friend. That means that if possible, get the patient sitting at an absolute 90 degree angle, and get their chin to their chest. It looks severe but they go down so much easier. To measure you go from the tip of the nose to the earlobe, hold at the ear and then stretch it down to the bottom of the sternum (xyphoid process area). I mark that spot with a bit of tape. If they are not awake, aim towards the ear as you insert, then as you thread it down, keep holding the chin to the chest and watch for the swallow and move it along as soon as you see it. If your patient is awake, the positioning is the same, but at least you can guide them through it. I have them swallow ice water via straw when we are ready for swallowing because it is numbing as the tube moves along. Nurses, check your placements with air auscultation, but never administer a tube feeding without also sending the patient to xray to check placement. After that confirmation you can pull out the guidewire. An NG to LWS (low wall suction) does not typically need an xray check before starting suction, your auscultation should be fine. The LWS tubes usually have a metallic strip on the side in case placement does need to be radiographed, there is generally no guidewire. This patient has been taught to insert her own tube feeding NG. Totally appropriate for her to start her own feedings without an x ray check because 1) She knows historically if it feels like it is in the right place and she may also have been taught auscultation as an additional confirmation and B) She has assumed responsibility for her own procedure at this point, the legal liability would lie with the doc who taught her the procedure. If a nurse were inserting this, it would still be required to get an x ray confirmation before removing the guidewire and starting feedings. Happy tubing 😊

*Excellent video! I have a suggestion for placing tubes when you have a narrow nostril, or difficulty getting the tube into the nasopharynx - this has worked for me for many years, and it is painless, and **_always_** works!*
*When trying to "Push Past" a narrow lumen, start "twirling" the tube between your palms. The idea it to get the tube to turn right and then left, very fast - kind of like "vibrating" the thing. It works like a charm!*
*I will try your two innovations on my next pass opportunity (stretching the lips and using a 45 degree angle of attack) as well.*

Fellow Crohnnie here. I am wayyyyyy older than you... yet I just learned by watching your video...how to insert the NG tube a bit easier. We all hate it, no doubt. But you are so brave. Take a bow. You deserve it! (Oh and wear gloves too) Trust me...I've also had C-Diff 15x with a failed transplant. Caught it in the hospital.

I had a ng tube since last 2mnths bcz of post cricoid stricture carcinoma. It was very painfull. Doctors didnt do like this. Even they didn't gave any water in the process of insertion of ng tube. Ur very brave to put a ng tube urself.

A few months ago I would have been able to watch this because of trauma. Now, I’m comfortable with watching and talking about this kind of thing and it’s amazing that you are advising people on how to do this procedure. Doing it quickly is so much better as when I had mine reinserted before, the nurse kept getting it wrong and she really hurt my nose :(
It's interesting to see how it's put in. I'm 13 I have germ cell cancer and when I first got it in it was the worst pain I had EVER felt. And then a few days later I threw up and it came out and they had to put it BACK. Any tips that you might know for how to keep it in when I throw up?? The chemo that I'm getting causes nausea and I DO NOT want it to fall out again haha

Sometimes I find just holding the tube down firmly with my fingers at my nostril helps to keep my tube in when throwing up- when I'm vomiting it tends to try to come out through my nose (even though it's taped down) rather than through my mouth. You can also put a piece of duoderm on your face then lay the tube on the duoderm then another piece sandwiching the tube on top if you find you get a mark where the tube lays on your cheek. Helps prevent skin breakdown!

i remember when i did a suicide attempt i took so many pills and drugs which were dangerous, and they had to insert a tube bigger than this one to clean the stomach and put a carbonic treatment to stop the effects of the drugs, it was the worst day of my life and the pain was soooo horrible, seeing you like that, it makes me sad but motivates me because you are so strong ♥️

THIS HELPS A LOT, I'm in recovery from an eating disorder and I have to wear a tube 24/7 and it always is so uncomfortable trying to swallow it and it would burn in my nose but... I never tried putting it in and them swallowing my tube with water!!! Helped so so so much thank you!

1) Try to bend gently the tip ( like 10cm of it) of the NG to have a little curve so it will go down easier, put it perpendicular( as she showed it) and right next to the cartilage at the middle of your nose( it will help it to don't get stucked in any part).
2) Use a straw to drink the water so while you're sipping you can push the NG down your throat without feeling much of it, push it quickly, it won't happen anything, will be faster and less suffering for you.

I managed in the hospital but at home .... nose part no problem... it's swallowing it where I go wrong. It keeps going the wrong way despite sipping and swallowing. I couldn't aspirate easily... fluid should aspirate easily without a huge vacuum in the tube and a few bubbles coming up after great pressure!
I'll try leaving go of the tube and seeing if the swallow mechanism naturally sucks it down. (Btw, going into the trachea doesn't make one gag or cough it feels like one has something stuck in throat whereas the correct route in oesophagus, you can barely feel it all). The ng tubes they have provided me don't contain a guide wire either... it is only v fine polyurethane tubing.

Had a much larger NG tube inserted a couple months ago while I was hospitalized for a bowel obstruction. It wasn’t pleasant but the nurses who did it were wonderful. I don’t have a horrible gag reflex and can usually take a mind over matter approach to medical procedures, but for people with a sensitive gag reflex, it would be a horrible procedure. Especially if you have a nurse who doesn’t know what they are doing. That said, having it in for 3 days was the worst. Mine was giant sized compared to yours. They were using it to pump my stomach though so that’s probably why. I actually had a worse gag reflex when it was removed, but it was sweet relief to have that awful thing out!!

Hi Karen! Thanks for your comment! My advice would be to avoid forcing the tube down when there is discomfort as often pulling the tube back slightly then trying again can be better. For example, I have a sensitive part right at the back of my nose and often the tube will get 'stuck' there and I can force it past but it is painful. Often if I just pull the tube back a bit and try again the tube will go down absoluetely fine. Hope that helps a little!

As a medical student, thank you for demonstrating so clearly the experience of applying an NG tube. The nasal passages truly do proceed straight back (on the horizontal plane) from the nasal opening to the nasopharynx. Great demo.

Amazing! I admire you and your bravery to do this video for us. I have Short gut Syndrome and this is what my future will become in a few weeks. I rather insert my own tubing at home when needed than having a feeding tube inserted into my stomach 24/7...I wasn't born with this illness, it was a Simple tubal surgery gone bad.. My small intestines were cut into front and back wall, 8 major surgeries later I am living with the aftermath of my OBGYN mistake. #STRONGWOMENFIGHTINGTOGETHER
I have had 8 NG tubes inserted b4 each surgery and they gave a cup of cold water with a straw and said drink n swallow repeat and it was in place within seconds later.
