As a child know used to have a feeding tube, I want people to understand that this is NOT easy for the nurse or the patient. It’s painful, uncomfortable and can make you vomit sometimes. I always heard people saying “oh your overreacting it’s not that bad” so let me explain. This is a small, plastic tube going up your nose, down your throat and into your stomach.
I got this done, my eyes was tearful and I felt like throwing up and it is extremely painful and you feel the tube in your throat. I can’t wait to get better and have this taken out when I get better.
My mother had this done three times I’d A&E at in hospital. Third time (by a Dr) was not done with two professionals present, twice the the bags were not secured to the bed or patient (by nurses). The bag fell onto the floor and pulled out the drain TWICE! (The second bag was tied on by a rubber glove, not allowing for gravity!). The third time, consultant Dr did it and didn’t know there were holes for securing the bag, also he didn’t offer water to aid swallowing the tube (I suggested as I’d witnessed twice before), I reminded him and showed him the securing holes in the bag. He asked if I had medical training, I said no, I’m just observant, as I’d watched it twice. The consultants thought I had sabotaged my mothers drains! Thank you Bath hospital for making me feel like shit !!!!😮
Second the "thumbs up" to the patient. Though for the exigencies of making a training video (and patient privacy) could the patient have been another nurse? If so, all the more praiseworthy for knowing beforehand and being willing to undergo the procedure.
Had NG several times with Crohn’s disease.I can put in them better than most . I use a bit of water with a straw and the tube goes down with no problem.
I just had this done last week. It was very uncomfortable and after it was placed my throat hurt and I was miserable the whole time it was in. 2x I have had this done and it is not pleasant one bit.
I’m hopefully getting an ng tube on Monday due to lack of fluid and nutrition from constant vomiting everyday for 3 weeks. I’m nervous but it’s what I need while waiting for endoscope under general anaesthetic
We’re you able to get one? I’ve been in and out of the hospital for constant vomiting and nobody will give me a tube I’m going to die if I don’t get some Type of nutrition. I’m going hospital to hospital and doctors with no answers
I’ve had 6 of these bastards. If it’s any comfort, each one was slightly less traumatic as I got used to them. But the first one was… ptsd material…. It is far more than a little uncomfortable and definitely painful.
Dear coleagues I´m Roberta Waterkemper Professor of Universidade Federal of Helath Sciences of Porto Alegre ( UFCSPA) Brazil. Lecture of Fundamentals of Nursing and I´d like to congrats you by simulation. It was really good, but there are some questions that I´d like to do. First: When you where inserting the tube, through the nose before arrive the throat, why the patient head wasn´t flexed? You had luck! The tube gonne directly to the stomac, but it could have gonne to mouth or lungs. 2o Yes you put your hand on patient hair and then ask to your coleague to help you to hold the tube to not contaminate the tube; 3o You kept the tube guide on and didn´t say in anytime when you would take it out; 4o I´ll wait forthe next....Thanks!
I dont believe the marker is suppose to go inside the nose when i learned today we just marked it with our eyes as ours had numbers on it so we knew when to stop it once it got to that # and we didn't push any further. Then they're checking the PH but u can also order a Xray to see the placement u do 1 or the other.
I thought exactly the same re the marker pen ink in the body from 56- 60cm. No reply on that then? A very well presented demonstration though. I met a very young child yesterday who has one in place permanently. A very brave little girl !
Heyy, I just got one yesterday, and it wasn't that bad. It is almost like a nose swab test, but it just goes further. The worst part is feeling the tube in your throat, but even that isn't too bad. I hope and pray that all goes well for you 😊
@TPWR0f2 Hey, I could only feel it in my throat, especially when I swallow. I couldn't even feel it my my stomach at all. I will say everyone is different, so your experience may be a bit different than mine. But you shouldn't feel it in your stomach, though. If you're okay with eating like small ice cubes, those help numb the throat a bit. 😊😊also, I forgot to add yes mine went to my stomach.
as a 13 year old who had to get my NG tube replaced 4 different times, if you have to get the tube in the nurses are gonna tell you it's just uncomfortable but it's not only that. It can hurt, make your eyes water and/or make you throw up. It's not nice.
Huge pet peeve of mine…. I wish they would stop trading medical professionals to tell you how well they are doing when the patient is using every ounce of self control to not scream st the provider. That patient knows damn well he isn’t doing well. In fact it will stay in his memory as a horrific event in his life. It does absolutely nothing to comfort the patient, he still wishes he could get his hands on the provider. Stay well all. Cheers
*The NHS seriously won't allow a PGY-I or PGY-II to confirm placement of an NGT? I suppose I can agree with the PGY-I - at least for a few months, but a second year should have NGTs down pat. What is the reasoning behind this odd restriction?*
Because your muscles werent being used to eat physically dor awhile and it is a foreign object that ur bodies white cells try and attack its basically like a cold ur white blood cells attack the infection and u get a dore throat

As soon as the proper placement is checked or right after it's placed. In the ER yesterday for me, they removed it as soon as the NGT was inserted. Then I the placement was tested with air/stethoscope, pH strip and x-ray.
We keep the coil in till after the x-ray is done and confirmation that it is in the correct place. Confirmation stated by our doctors. And as a nurse, we check for placement by aspirating content and checking for ph levels and also air/stethoscope.
Why do they all lie and say the nasal and stomach feeding tubes don't hurt? I just got a stomach feeding tube last week and it was worse than my appendicitis, actually rhe worse pain I've ever been in my life!
well, when one cannot take food through mouth or getting lost nutrition too fast with vomitting, then this ng tube is inserted, and body gets quick liquid food to help your body with proper balanced nutrition
pradeep prakash What do you think is the indication for this procedure to be sterile? The nasal cavity, pharynx, oesophagus and stomach are non-sterile body cavities, therefore clean technique is adequate as far as I am aware. Do you brush your teeth with a sterile toothbrush? ;) your food is not sterile either...

I don't know, but in the Czech Republic, when a tube is inserted through the nose, you have to drink to make sure it slides down the throat.
