Damn... I remember when all this was first goin down. 2003 was a fucked up year. A lot of the local gangs at that time had recently been absorbed by the Mexican Mafia prison gang. That's why if you lived in the south valley you would see 13 at the ends of their tags, SS13, WS13, MS13, LxP13, just to name a few. Prison gang support also meant more money and more recruitment. The late 90's/early 00's in the South Valley you couldn't throw a rock without hitting a Sureno, or walk downtown without hearing that eerie Los Padilla howl. They were also very bold and aggressive. All the local tagging crews that were forming were starting to get bullied. Whether it was being pressured into selling drugs for them, or misinterpreting their graffiti art as open challenges, the tension between the gangs and the crews reached a boiling point... Then the fighting started I was friends with a lot of the TCK fellas at Rio. Some of them I've even know back in elementary school at Armijo! When they first became a crew, it was all about that B-Boy street culture. You know tagging, break dancing, rapping, and they were good at all of it too! Their graffiti art was amazing! And some of them would even come hang out and rap with us at the N-word tree where the few black students in the whole south valley hung out at lunch lol! Yes, I know, that's what the tree was called and we owned that shit! One of them played football with me and we got really close. He had the potential to be the best running back in the state. Unfortunately he got caught up in that street life and chose that over football. And then the streets eventually took him. RIP. What breaks my heart the most is that there was such a beautiful culture emerging in the south valley. It reminded me sort of like the cholo version of whats going on over in the SF Bay area with the potential to produce some amazing artists. But then the bangers had to go and blur the line between street culture and street life and now things are all fucked up.

@Mike’s World I went to high school out there for a year when I was 17 back in 1999, had homeboys from 60s and 40s but never knew like how deep each gang was out there..there was dudes I went to school with from KPC 30s, met a dude from 18st and heard about Martinez Town. I came from California..I was surprised to see LA based gangs out there like 18st, 60s and 40s. Do the gangs out there have established turfs?

I went to Ernie Pyle middle school and started tagging and break dancing with all the Homies before you do it TC linked up with southside at Rio grande high school for power and everything changed. I ended up buying a house on the Westside and living up there with a whole bunch of Westsiders. We all had respect for each other until smoke was killed. After that war was declared you know.
