    On March 26, 1953, 97 men, women, and children were slaughtered in the southern central Kenyan village of Lari. They had been woken up in the middle of the night by screaming men and women armed with an assortment of weapons, from a few WWII-era rifles and pistols to pangas - the Swahili word for machete-like weapons and other farm implements. Then they herded into large huts, which were doused in gasoline and set afire. Those who tried to escape the fire were then set upon with pangas and hacked to pieces. The attackers were part of the Mau Mau movement to free Kenya from British colonial rule.
    No one knows where the name “Mau Mau” came from - not even those who participated in the group. Some say it originated with British police and militia from words and chants in Kikuyu, the dominant language and ethnic group of the movement and the largest in Kenya. Others believe it came from Kikuyu words having to do with the all-important oath that members took. “Mauma” means oath, and “muma” means “oath-taking” in Kikuyu. The word became a sort of catch-all term for many of the groups fighting for independence against the British in Kenya and nearby British possessions. The men and women of the Mau Mau never used the term. They were part of the “Land and Freedom Army” and often called themselves “freedom fighters.”
    What we know for sure is that for much of the 1950s, the Mau Mau terrified the British in Kenya and their Kenyan supporters, of which there were many. The Lari Massacre was the worst of many atrocities carried out by the Land and Freedom Army during the Mau Mau Uprising from 1952 to 1960, but the British and their followers committed many brutal attacks and persecutions as well.

      They did do that to children. A white family in Nairobi came into their kitchen to see their cook sitting there quietly - on the table was the dismembered corpse of their child who had all his limbs and head chopped off. In the farming regions whole families were also slaughtered - there are photos from the time that are quite disturbing with blood spattered teddy bears etc. Native people however suffered far more - the oathing rituals of the Mau Mau were forced on the unwilling in the most atrocious ways. Most of the casualties in the Mau Mau were Kikuyu killing Kikuyu on both sides. Jomo Kenyatta described it accurately (in my opinion) of more a civil war amongst the old and new attitudes of the Kikuyu. @@5islands

      Exactly - Kenyatta characterised the Mau Mau as more a civil war amongst the new-thinking Kikuyu and the old-thinking Kikuyu. He was correct and the Mau Mau was ultimately a failed conflict that delayed Independence and unsettled the country prior to Independence. It also laid bare the ambition of the Kikuyu (who were advantaged by European rule) to dominate the political sphere in Kenya.

And in none of those colonial states that were set up by European powers, was there any freedom or prosperity for the locals. Don't even get me started about what king Leopold was doing in the Congo . All of the colonizers brutalized the native africans.

      @@lotcam4046 The Indians came initially for the East African Railway (the native people were not in sufficient numbers and not reliable - they would walk off the job). Some stayed to create trading posts along the railway (many small towns in Kenya grew up around these). They then created businesses in the coastal and interior regions. Although the British preferred to create administrative jobs with the native peoples the Indians proved better at filling these as was the case with the legal system. Gujaratis and Parsees have traded with East Africa in History way before the Europeans arrived (usually through the Zanzibari). The first coinage of British East Africa was the Indian Rupee.
      In many countries of the old British Empire Indians were actually in greater numbers than European peoples and in some instances (e.g. Fiji) this became problematic as they almost eclipsed the local people.

    3:02 Also there's a theory that says Mua Mau came from the word "Uma" which means leave or get out.12:06 The brits were so scared of the freedom fighters that they declared a state of emergency and carpet bombed the Mt. Kenya forest and Abadare highlands. An old grandmother told us that when she was caught as a teenager, the brits cut her fingers & toes so she couldn't take food and information to the fighters in the forest. Most males were killed while women were abused sexually, and wives and mothers were left with scars. There were many wars that the Mau Mau & other freedom fighters were involved. Most of them were never documented by the British. But these stories were told by the heroes in great detail. Most notable of the undocumented wars was the battle at Kinungi & The wars between brits & the coastal, western, & pastrolists.

    This was what the Brits feared in India which had the largest native-manned army, air force and navy in the world after WW2. The Indian navy mutiny of 1946 threatened to spread to the army and air force at a time that the INA soldiers and officers were being tried in court with nationalist sentiments being aired. The Brits got the message and fled as quickly as they could with skin intact. It was their brilliant success though that their portrayed savior of India was Gandhi, an idiot in a loincloth spouting non-violence as almost a religion. What the French and the British and other European colonizers were doing is setting the different tribes against each other. Arming and supplying one group of people to fight against the others, then ruling the region by proxy through the group they sponsored. The only reason why the Europeans were in Africa was to harvest African resources, including the labor of the people themselves.

    • @malkum77ify
      @malkum77ify 3 місяці тому +21

      No they weren't, they were brutal oppressors who were oppressing people in their own land. These different tribes as you call them were separate nations with separate languages Customs histories and traditions. They came in and Drew lines on the maps, enforce people who lived in different countries and regions into one Colonial state. And it wasn't to unite them into a single unified nation, but rather to force them to work and harvest resources for the benefit of the British Empire and not for themselves. So they had every right to rise up and slaughter their oppressors. They knew that they probably would not survive the counter-attack from the British empire, but they also knew that death was better than bondage.

      @user-nz6bk7lf8u LOL! So I guess then we can conclude that the French were a bunch of savages and barbarians when they were conquered by the Third reich, right? And I supposed to say can be said when the Japanese Empire conquered the Philippines and most of the islands in the Pacific, right? Or when Iraq invaded Kuwait? So you believe that might makes right, and all the conquered are automatically "savages"? As far as I'm concerned, the real savages are the ones who invade, conquer, and subjugate people who are not their equal militarily are the savages. A truly civilized culture when entering to a mutually agreeable and beneficial trade agreements what's that people's so that's both parties will want to participate.
      As far as Africans in Native American being so-called savages, based on what standard of measure? Bonito population of North America add governments and treaties and trade agreements amongst themselves. I guess you never heard of the Iroquois confederacy. It was an agreement among five tribes in Northwestern New York from which the framers of the Constitution took inspiration. Furthermore, were it not for the so-called Savages in North america, most Europeans would not have survived in North America. Unfortunately, the new arrivals from Great Britain repaid the Native Americans generosity by giving them blankets that once belonged to smallpox victims. And we can also talk about how King Leopold, the bastard who was cutting off arms and legs of Africans in the Congo who were working in his rubber tree plantations. Sounds to me you subscribe to the belief that might makes right. And those that have the power to do what they want should. Those who believe that power justifies itself will eventually find themselves in the underdog position.

      @@fortunatomartino8549 I prefer evidence. Pre apartheid was before 1948 and ended in the early 1990s. The ANC government has a lot of serious flaws, mostly because it is a capitalist government that has given much of South Africa's human and natural resources to outside investors and has not distributed the wealth created by its working class to that class. As a consequence, poverty, crime and inequality are rife. The country desperately needs a socialist, working class revolution.

    Africa has been from time immemorial a place of brute savagery, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa, where warring tribes took enemies as slaves, sold them at markets and butchered them for food.
    It was the Europeans, and in particular Britain, that brought the light of science and learning to these places in an attempt to civilise them.

      Europe has been, from time immemorial a place of cave-man style savagery, particularly Western Europe, who learned from other civilizations, with more advanced quality of life than them, then betrayed and warred against these civilizations. The Moors...a "mixed Afro-Arab" people led mostly by BLACK African military generals of Arab armies, taught you that bathing more than once every few years won't hurt you, science is not magic, more knowledge of trade routes, and that the world is round (though your religious & political elite didn't pay attention). After learning how to compartmentalize the knowledge taken from ancient Rome, the Moors, and others, into long term psychological and advanced warfare...especially the divide and rule concept, you came to Africa...800 plus years after your Indo-European cousins, the Arabs, already betrayed and conquered the Black Africans NORTH of the Sahara. Realizing that unlike non-Africans, Africans (as a collective) have no desire for global domination, are, relative to Europeans & Asian groups (especially the groups who stepped foot on Africa), the most hospitable to strangers, and generally less cautious of outsiders. So the Europeans beat the Asian invaders of Africa at their own game, conquered both groups, wrote books and even skipped over the books of the Bible in order to justify your morally bankrupt r*ping, murdering and global genocidal behavior, while pointing at the much smaller scale "barbaric" actions of Africans! Simultaneously you create global economic and political "laws" that you break when it's convenient for you, then pretend to be so "evolved" from your past savage practices that has created genocide of a minimum of 3 continents put even the majority of your own "superior race" in poverty!. So the barbarian, Neanderthal, morally bankrupt, hypocritical, lying behavior of you and racists who think like you haven't changed! So much for attempting "civilize" Africans. Be thankful that Africans have REFUSED your style of civilization...it's the reason there's any Europeans left alive on the African continent.

      Actually to see Africans selling the corpses of other Africans and butchering them for food you only have to go as far back as 30 years ago in Monrovia, Liberia. The slave trade in all corners of Africa can found in history books - suspiciously hard to find on the Internet though! Most slavery in Africa ended during the colonial period. However for non-colonial African countries slavery persisted - For some idea of the time periods concerned - Ethiopia/Abyssinia only gave up slavery in 1943 - it is estimated at the time that 1 in 3 Ethiopians was a slave. @@Mr.Universe
