  • One of the main reasons for the success of the D-Day landings was the element of surprise, the incredibly huge invasion force, congregating along the south coast of England went undetected by German Intelligence. Hitler's Generals believed the stormy weather meant it would be mission impossible, and it almost was.

    I rarely watch my completed work again.. but this prog is a bit special to me. I shot all the "now footages" as well as producing and narrating.. and it was humbling to walk those beaches and locations, La Cambe and the American cemetery are particularly moving. This month is the 80th anniversary of the turning point on the Western front and as I write these words, the very last few real survivors are in transit to honor their lost comrades, allies and friends. As their voices fade in real life, I feel a value to my work for future generations. "LEST WE FORGET".

      Whatever you document DO NOT EVER BLURR images to soften it for the PC feelings. It needs to be SEEN in all its horror to burn in the images of reality maybe then they will learn that ears are the worst thing humanity can bring upon itself.

      13:34 Oh, so Churchill directed the United States to build him LSTs, did he? That is ridiculous on its face and this author has some nerve, in fact I might call him an f'ing idiot. Churchill was a slobbering drunk and had about as much military skill as he did social skill, which was just about zero.
      I say one more jackass statement like that and you get a thumb down, to be certain.

      13:34 ...well at least you could get your facts coordinated. Churchill had nothing to do with the US producing LSTs and as far as I'm concerned the statement that you made at this timestamp was about as lame as a history rewriting slouch can be. I despise people who attempt to rewrite history or even worse take credit for those things that they had absolutely nothing to do with. What you've said here is a clumsily disguised and scummy attempt at drumming up unearned credit for something that Churchill had no involvement in. Such a typical British history revisionist. If you want LST's, go ahead and build them yourselves but don't claim that you were instrumental in making the US build them for you. We don't take orders from the crown and you don't get to claim credit for something that your country had nothing to do with. How incredibly offensive and obnoxious of you.

    "We were just Americans who did what we were asked to do", Nick Kastrantas 82nd Airborne Cartographer of Normandy who completed 5 airborne assaults without a casualty. His luck was based on his deep faith in God, St. Gerasimo's locket, and the plywood map in his backpack that caught some shrapnel. His artwork lives on at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, many Detroit restaurants including Leo's Coney Islands, Greek Islands, Athens Souvlaki and Fishbones.

    My uncles fought in France and Italy. My dad was days away from being sent to Korea in 51. They are all gone now but never forgotten. One of my cousins served 2 tours in Viet Nam in the 60s. Two of my cousins are career Army officers and served in Iraq and Iran. All that is to say I grew up greatly respecting and honoring the American military. But I also respect and admire the German fighting forces in WWI and II. Documentaries like this always tell only one side. It took 6 years and 50 countries to defeat the single country of Germany Think about that fact.

    I see a lot of comments; but the Russians!
    First this video is from a British guy and he is telling the story from a British prespective.
    Second this is about D-day, not about Stalingrad
    Third every German soldier and general biggest nightmare was a two front war on two sides. In world war I this was a nightmare and also for wwII. D-day was the end of the hope for the german fighters that they where able to win the war. That psychical effect was insane.
    The victory from the Allied forces was a combined effort of the UK, USSR and USA. Yes the russians lost by far the most soldiers, but that was also due to their military doctrine. The Americans send a very large number of trucks and other military equipment so the ussr can concentrate on the manufacturing of tanks. The English lost a lot of sailors (google for QB17) with their sea transports to Murmansk. After the war the communists forget to tell about this.

      Soviet Union had nothing to do with D-Day. This was about the western front, not the eastern front. Get your facts straight

    At this time, I would like to remember one American Soldier who was killed on a Normandy Beach (Probably on "Bloody Omaha".)
    His name was Donald Redmond, and he died on June 9th, 1944 (on D-Day Plus 3).
    He was 21 years old.
    Donald was my Cousin's Brother-in-law.
    That's really all I know of him.
    Almost ten years to the day later, on June 8th, 1954 -- I made my Debut into the World.
    Donald Redmond -- Rest In Peace.

    I always find it amazing how a handful of men led an entire country down the path of destruction. After 6 years, 60 million people dead and Europe in ruins.

    Russia was on a one-way march to Berlin after Kursk no matter if Day-Day took place or not .
    D-Day did make sure that Stalin did not take western Europe like he did Eastern Europe at least .
    When Stalin liberated a country he forgets to leave when the war ends .

      Thats a very strange comment. Stalin himself asked usa and uk several times for this second front. And the danger of this second front on a very large coastline was the reason the Nazis had a very large number of army division in Western Europe. When there was no (danger for a) second front, the Nazis had a much stronger defense on the Eastern Front. Maybe Stalin had the power to destroy the complete nazi army, but then the had destroyed 85% of his own army (and young people).
      I never underestimate the importance of the Russian forces on the Liberation, but there a some (political) historians that now are overrating the Russian impact.

      @@Peter-dy9sp merci pour ce que tu as dis je suis d'accord avec toi! il fallait déjà faire une tête de pont en normandie qui n'était vraiment pas facile en plus il on eu la météo contre eu, c'est pour dire le déploiement de force qu'ils avaient et Staline tuait tout ceux qui reculait et heureusement qu'Hitler était un mauvais stratège et que tout le monde suivais ces ordres sinon ça aurait vraiment été difficile, il a fait tuer et exclus Romel et les autre stratège sinon la bombe nucléaire aurai dû être utilisé une fois fabriqué, je pense! Pour prendre Caen il a fallu 85 jours, les allier pensais prendre la ville en 1 jour mai la décision d'envoi de renfort pour le débarquement a été pris tard heureusement mai il sont comme arrivé avec de troupe de dingue!
      Et le bunker géographiquement était beaucoup plus près de la Russie! salutation! et peace and love!!

      There are so many different factors and angles to debate.
      Stalin, like Hitler, was Pure Evil. On that, there is no debate.
      However, suppose we just change ONE thing:
      Say Hitler NEVER invades the USSR on June 22nd, 1941.
      After all, they had a Non-Aggression Pact from Aug 23, 1939.
      In that case, there would have been two or three million MORE German soldiers to "Greet" us on June 6th, 1944. Hitler would not have had to rely on Russian POWs to "guard" the beaches. (They would rather be THERE, than to be in Stalag 17!) Of course, they would surrender in two minutes!
      In such a scenario, with Hitler and Stalin as Allies, would we even ATTEMPT to land on Normandy???
      Maybe we DO, but with a lot more than 190,000 troops.
      It would be "a whole New Ball Game".

    -Dwight D. Eisenhower Supreme Allied Commander. This was his other speech. D-Day was never a guarantee..

    J'imagine très bien ce que la Grande Génération a vécu. J'étais à Utah Beach avec mes deux derniers garçons (juste après leur saut en parachute). Je suis un ancien militaire et débarquer sur une plage sans avoir de protection est une chose terrible. Le destin de chaque soldat lors de la WW2 est tellement bizarre. Perdre des camarades est une chose horrible, ce sont nos frères d'armes, nos copains, ça me fait froid dans le dos. Je vais parler à la jeune génération de français qui ont la mémoire courte : personnellement j'évoquerai plutôt la terreur de se retrouver sur une plage battue par le feu ennemi, du sang, des cris de mes camarades, des blessés et des morts alliés, de la misère et du désarroi, de la peur qui vous prend aux tripes. Souvenez-vous de la première scène du film " Il faut sauver le soldat Ryan" et gravez-la dans votre mémoire. N'oubliez jamais que si ces jeunes soldats alliés n'avaient pas débarqué en se sacrifiant vous salueriez tous le portrait d'Hitler en levant le bras droit. Quant à votre liberté elle n'existerait même pas. Vous seriez tous incorporés dans l'armée allemande et vous ne diriez rien sous peine de mort et de tortures. Vous croyez que les Allemands ont conquis l'Europe pour faire du tourisme ? Et les camps d'extermination, la Shoah, la Shoah par balles dans l'Est de l'Europe et en Russie, les exterminations de masses, femmes, enfants, vieillards, les chambres à gaz, la Gestapo, les SS, c'était quoi ? Des vacances ? Désolé on ne peut pas traiter l'occupation nazie ou le Débarquement comme s'il s'agissait d'une histoire banale. Un doute ? Alors regardez un reportage d'Arte sur les Einsatzgruppen, le massacre prémédité de centaines de milliers de personnes par les Nazis. Édifiant ! Vous le retrouverez sur UA-cam
    Et voilà une autre histoire
    du front russe lors de la WW2. Une histoire familiale : tous mes grands-pères lorrains ont été incorporés de force dans l'armée allemande. Il s'agit de "Malgré-Nous" mosellans qui avaient été obligés de se présenter aux autorités allemandes sous peine de voir leurs famille déportée dans un camp de concentration. En effet la Moselle et l'Alsace faisaient à nouveau partie du III Reich. Donc le père à ma mère qui venait de terminer son service militaire dans l'armée française, cavalerie légère, s'est retrouvé comme estafette à moto sur le front russe dans la Werhmacht. Il était pro-communiste, travaillait à la SNCF et détestait l'uniforme qu'il portait ainsi qu'Hitler. Fin 1943 il décide de déserter lors d'une permission. A cette époque les soldats allemands rentraient avec leur arme, en l'occurrence un fusil Mauser 98k et des munitions, car au retour ils ignoraient où se trouverait leur régiment sur une ligne de front très mouvante. A son arrivée son arme était déposée soit à la gendarmerie française, institution que l'occupant avait gardée, soit à la Kommandantur. On tamponnait son Soldbuch, son livret militaire, pour prouver qu'il était bien arrivé. Avant son départ son arme lui était remise et il avait droit à un nouveau coup de tampon. Une fois dans le train mon grand-père se met en civil, glisse le fusil dans un étui de canne à pêche et déserte. Quelques semaines plus tard la Gestapo est à ses trousses. Lors d'une perquisition il échappe de peu à la capture et on l'aurait exécuté sans pitié. Il sont plusieurs déserteurs qui survivent tant bien que mal en se gardant des bandes de SS qui patrouillent pour pendre les lâches, les déserteurs et les résistants. Et puis un jour trois nazis, deux Feldgendarmen et un agent de la Polizeï accompagné d'un chien, se dirigent directement vers leur cachette c'est à dire sous un petit pont du ruisseau la Bibiche près de Metzersche 57 (Lorraine-Moselle). Il est probable qu'ils ont été dénoncés. Mon grand-père attend que ses poursuivants soient à bonne distance et les tue tous. Les Allemands plein d'arrogance ne s'attendaient certainement pas à une embuscade. Ce jour-là il a également sauvé la vie de ses copains déserteurs et la sienne. Il a gagné sa liberté en se battant. Heureusement l'armée du général Patton a traversé la rivière Moselle peu après. Mon grand-père maternel était sauvé. Ma famille regorge d'histoires concernant la WW2 et elle a beaucoup souffert de l'occupation.
    Encore merci à tous ces soldats alliés et aux résistants qui ont souffert pour notre liberté. Votre souvenir reste gravé dans nos cœurs et nos mémoires.
    PS : et dire que la jeune génération refuse de se battre pour la France selon un récent sondage. Heureusement que les JEUNES soldats alliés et les résistants n'ont pas fait la même chose sinon... 😖🇺🇸🇫🇷👍💞💞💞

    Just wanted to comment on the thumbnail. I see it as a great representation of how German soldiers appeared in 44-45 and how they used their equipment. In this case, a 2cm Flak 30 on its sd.ah.51 trailer.

    I would suggest that the first few British attacks on Caen were defeats. It wasn't Montgomery's experience in WWI that permitted him to predict, it was the ability of Britain to read the Enigma codes using Ultra, particularly in the ability to hit Italian fuel supplies on their way to north Africa. It wasn't Eisenhower's job to control Patton and Montgomery in Sicily, it was Alexander's job.

      The beginning of the end was d day no doubt . If hitler hadn`t had to worry while America sailed 6000 miles of men and equipment BEFORE the attack. The war would have been lost and Russia would have been taken. Remember the Americans were fighting 2 wars at this time , and without Japans involvement Germany would have lasted 6 months instead of 1 year . I thank my lucky stars that i have such good neighbors!

      Music choice is subjective to the listener. ALL progs are "legalised" for broadcast standard.. but for some reason YT throws a volume spanner in the works with music. We can't work out WHAT they do.. as it isn't generic. But once it is up.. it's up.. try my audiobooks.. no music.. ;-)

    If Hitler had given Rommel operational control of the panzer divisions in the Normandy region it would have been a much harder fight for the allies. The armor wouldn't have been able to advance to the beaches themselves, but from several miles in they would have been devastating to the first units that pushed inland from them.

      Rommel left France to visit his wife for her birthday when D-Day took place, I read. He even went to Paris to buy her a pair of shoes as a present. Bad timing.

I truly believe that it was providence, not merely coincidence that the birthday of the Commander in chief’s wife, the man in charge of all Wehrmacht forces in the West just happened to have her birthday fall on the very same day that the Allies chose to invade.

    At the 21:00 mark, you say that "Rommel was convinced of an Invasion at Calais (Palais De la Calais) and so kept troops there.
    However, in his book "THE LONGEST DAY", Cornelius Ryan (who interviewed American, British, French and Germans after the War), wrote that "on June 4th, 1944, Gen Rommel left Normandy for Berlin.
    He had two reasons for doing so.
    (1) Ryan said that Rommel wanted to ask Hitler if Rommel could transfer the 15th Panzer Division from Calais to Normandy! (Hitler was deceived by the Allied Deception, but not Rommel.)
    (2) Rommel's other reason was a personal one. He wanted to bring his wife a Birthday Present: a pair of shoes he had bought in Paris!
    When was her Birthday?
    On June Sixth!
    That is one of the things, if it were in a fictional story, would NOT have been believed!

    Dreadful production. The CC do not come close to what is being said by the narrator and the music track is overwhelming everything. For such a historic event that will be recognized in a few days of its 80th anniversary, this documentary is an embarrassment and slap in the face to the men who gave their life on that faithful day and the days, weeks and months that followed.

      The doco is fine.. ALL progs are "legalised" to broadcast standard.. there is something that the YT algorythm does that boosts music even though it is balanced in the stereo upload. It's a drag and does not suit my ears as the producer. It doesn't happen all the time. Caption system is nonsense. Not sure if that is Google or Best Documentary. Cheers..     90% of the landings were unopposed, because the Germans were just spread too thin and overall army was too weak to put up a fight.
    Whole German army was almost wiped out in Russian's winter.
