Ford Escape moon roof (sunroof) common issue

- If you have a Ford escape that is having moonroof issues this is your most likely problem, you can go on the Internet and find the relearn procedure is but if it’s stuck in the open position which this one was then you’re gonna have to replace the motor. This is a quick tutorial on how to lower the roof panel. It will show you how that comes down, how it’s held on by magnets, and where the motors are and how to remove and replace them. Sunroof motors on these usually fail because of water intrusion. Sunroof drains usually the cause.
The sunroof motor is the one on the left, over the driver's visor, the shade motor is the one you had hanging down, unless the video is reversed.
You don't have to replace them both at once, if the other one works. On some you do, but not these.

@@justthetipgarage5305 No prob. Actually had one last week...stuck open. Cust didn't want it fixed, just shut and disabled. That was harder than just replacing the motor.
Removed the motor and tried to shut it...most of the way, but the back wouldn't pop up and you can't get to the guides to do it manually....and you can't get to the back screws to take the glass out and then do it manually. What to do?
So I put the shade motor in place of the sunroof motor. They are the same #. Initialized it, and it shut. Then put both back in their original spots, unplugged. What a pain.
That’s a good idea. This was my first attempt. I’m a diy mechanic so the only problems I see are my own and what my family and friends bring over. But if I see an easier solution I put it on here in hopes it helps someone else out.
@@justthetipgarage5305 Yep, and everyone appreciates it, too. I do water leaks, sunroof repairs and wind noises and have a bunch of videos about that stuff, because when I run across something I haven't seen before, I look it up on UA-cam, too. So it's giving back.

What about the control panel/sunglasses holder in the middle of the head liner? Does it pop out? I don't see any screws and I don't want to break it.
Looks like this is a 2013 or newer Escape. Pls update your video title to note that as earlier model years likely have some different steps/parts. Thanks very much.
You’re correct 2013 and up. If you can’t tell if yours is this same design year you shouldn’t attempt the repair.
any idea if this is how to access the motors on a 2010 mercury mariner? just want to close the vented sunroof manually but am hesitant to mess up my step-dad's headliner

Instead of just turning the key off and on, start the vehicle, cut it off and restart quickly. I have a video on that
Replaced the motor and now both the shade and the sunroof are stuck. Any thoughts?

@@justthetipgarage5305 After changing the car battery, my sunroof and the shade open only till the middle. This drives me crazy.
I’ve never heard of that issue or response to changing the battery. That’s weird
