Wish this was true in the real world. Such a difficult landing when the pilots cannot see where they are landing. I could not do it, no way. A ride in a taxi to the hotel is different from a ride landing a 747-400 in zero visibility. I admire the pilots who have the training and discipline to be able to land in zero visibility. Love all pilots!
Absolutely incredible! The noise in the flight deck is giving me goosebumps as I spent many flights in the jump seat while my husband flew the Queen of the Skies. Just love it!
It’s even more impressive that the design architecture for zero visibility landings was established in the 1970s and 1980s, but it did not see wide scale adoption by airlines until the 1980s and 90s
@John Smith adapted infers change, I think you meant adopted, and you would be correct as the gentleman stated above. Although the tech was available commercially in the 60s it was not heavily adopted until later as many carriers did not feel the need to put it on their planes. The people who wanted it most, as Mark pointed out was UK carriers because of the dense fog that had caused so many accidents in the UK.

Reminds me of submarines, there is no window, and at greater than 200 feet -- we normally operate a LOT deeper than that, I am allowed to say "greater than 800 feet" -- there is no sunlight penetration, and even if we had a light on the boat, we only be able to see a couple yards ahead. So we navigate with passive sonar and a lot of math. (I was a sonar tech.) :)

Perfect example why 5G towers too close to airport perimeters is potentially catastrophic and banned in most countries. Autoland is completely dependent on the aircraft receiving accurate, uninterrupted realtime Radar Altimeter data. And not just autoland either, GPWS and other safety equipment needs solid RA too.
Forget the pilots, even I couldn't see what they were flying into on YT in the comfort of home. Hats off to their high-calibre, professional, cool-headed brilliance.

The amazing part is the 747 series was one of the, if not the, first to be able to do the automatic landing. Unfortunately, from my understanding, it functionality was limited due to it could only be used at a handful of fully equipped airports. The military uses a very similar system for it's carrier landings in bad weather...

Very impressive i was just as impressed with the taxiing 👍😅. Couldnt help seeing the parallel between the pilots having faith in the technology the same as us passengers putting our faith in the pilots when we board a plane.
I think it's was a super hard landing because every thing was dark and you couldn't see anything but the plane landed without much shaking , perfect. 👍👍👍👍
I assume they could see the runway in some capacity below the viewer's "horizon", right? Even with autoland, you have to have the runway in sight before minimums -- isn't that the rule? Or am I wrong about that? Very cool video.
I think the pov of the camera add to the drama. They can probably see what's really un front of the nose, on the tarmac. From where the camera is situated we can only see upwords. at 05:26 you can clearly see the top of the tail of another aircraft. basically we are watching the sky all the time.

When I heard 40, 30, 20, 10, 5 and I still couldn't see the runway...I was like WHOA!! First of all whenever you hear 5, you know it's going to be a smooth landing. Shoutout to the pilot for a safe, soft and with zero visibility landing. ✈

I appreciate the comment with respect to instruments, but it further appeared the pilots were doing were doing nothing more than closely monitoring what the autopilot and automated systems were doing. From a layman's perspective the whole approach and landing appeared to be a fully autonomous operation. It didn't appear as if the pilots were actively doing anything in any "hands on" sense. Am I speaking from a place of ignorance? Did I miss something? It almost appeared like the pilots could have gotten up out of their seats and joined the passengers in the rear cabin during this approach and landing. This seemed like something far beyond actively flying on instruments in IFR conditions.
@@petertownsend252 Indeed, all the pilots are supposed to be doing is monitoring the automated systems - they only need to actively do something/touch the controls if there's a problem (e.g. a sudden gust of wind makes it unsafe to continue, or the autopilot fails to maintain the plane on the centre line of the runway).
Boeing without a doubt makes the best autopilot system a true triple channel autopilot so you can fire the CAT 3B Autoland, just don't forget the Tech's that work and Qualify the system that these Pilots depend on.
i was on a flight to madrid which was delayed during daytime because there was foggy weather in january. also i thought about one of the final destination movies, as that guy appeared outside the cockpit window and said "stop" this was so funny

That was truly extraordinary! Even with ILS I would be too chicken to trust the instruments 100%. And that tiny nanochance that something could be on that runway, or some other plane committing a runway incursion.....

Because the glide path into LCY is much steeper than the 3.25 degree limit for autoland usage. And so the airport does not have the equipment to use the ILS for low visibility approaches.

The taxi in during weather conditions like this is actually pretty challenging, thought with modern "own plane" software and the iPad makes it MUCH easier. Before that, crews sat WAY up during low vis taxi ops. Teneriffe anyone?
Add'l research: a CAT III approach needs: ILS qualified airport, plus weather requirements- the runway visibility cannot be less than 200 meters, cannot have more than 25 knots of head wind, 20 knots of crosswind, 10 knots of tailwind, no reported or forecasted windshear or turbulence. This makes more sense.
Cat III autoland is useful when the weather dictates its use. The pilots are very much interested in watching the glide slope and the localizer and the radar altimeter. Love to hear autopilot disengaged well after landing. If you know what you just heard it is very interesting. Funny if the 747 required a tow tug to find the terminal and parking spot. That is quite thick clouds truly low to the ground.
So who's plane is this? I'm trying to see if I can remember the sel call numbers, which I don't memorize anyway. It's pretty crazy knowing that you just have to trust where the airplane is going according to navigation. It's pitch black and then just lands. It's really traveling quite fast it doesn't feel like it.
The localizer beam is an electronic extension of the runway CENTERLINE. The plane has a receiver and tracks that beam. And I mean centerline. It's just that exact.

Actually, the LOCKEED L-1011 was THE first to have this technology.

But its due to the fact where the camera is positioned that you cant see the for a long time

Cat III autoland is useful when the weather dictates its use. The pilots are very much interested in watching the glide slope and the localizer and the radar altimeter. Love to hear autopilot disengaged well after landing. If you know what you just heard it is very interesting. Funny if the 747 required a tow tug to find the terminal and parking spot. That is quite thick clouds truly low to the ground.
To be honest landing big planes in bad conditions would be something i'd LOVE to do as a pilot.

So who's plane is this? I'm trying to see if I can remember the sel call numbers, which I don't memorize anyway.
It's pretty crazy knowing that you just have to trust where the airplane is going according to navigation. It's pitch black and then just lands. It's really traveling quite fast it doesn't feel like it.
I wish Captain Boeing would be "my pilot" all the time I travel.

I understand the vertical calculation to the ground, but how do they know they have lined up laterally on the runway to the dead center?
The localizer beam is an electronic extension of the runway CENTERLINE. The plane has a receiver and tracks that beam. And I mean centerline. It's just that exact.
