Creating a Construction Paper Model to Prepare for the Clay Enclosed Slab Boxes

  • This video covers how to make a construction paper model of a slab box form. One of the BIGGEST take-aways I want my students to understand is that if a piece is supposed to look symmetrical, they must use a folded line of symmetry to create a symmetrical piece. This can be used in sculpture with paper and cardboard, or as we use it, with tar paper and clay. This method of working with slabs involves using tar paper. Without using a line of symmetry, the form normally looks "off" and less precise and sophisticated.

    Tar paper is roofing paper ( in the US it is available at home improvement and hardware stores). I use the lighter weight- I think it might be 15 lb as opposed to the 30 lb weight. It is sold in big rolls near roofing materials. * Note* you don’t want to use the fiberglass embedded tar paper as this is problematic in handling.

    I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 30 years, the past 20+ have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I started my UA-cam channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

    Hi Karen, I am so excited to see you do and share this project. I recently made a large ‘memory’ box 7x7x7”. I had trouble with the sides bowing in. And I am eager to see how you make the gallery once the lid is cut-my concern is if the gallery will cause cracking during shrinking.
    I will eagerly await the next 2 episodes!
    Thanks for sharing! I love your videos.

    Hey Karen! I’m a HS Art teacher in Texas. We are starting ceramics this next year and I’m creating my curriculum from scratch. Thank you for your videos! You are helping me think of techniques I hadn’t thought of before. Do you have a teacher-pay-teacher sales page?

      Hi Judith- sorry for the delay- just now seeing this! I currently don’t have a teacher pay teacher account- but I have loads of links I offer throughout my videos! Love your videos ! What is the point of the tar paper ? To keep the walls stiff during construction and then you remove them before firing ?? Thank you!

      Exactly, Silvia- and it is resistant to water too. It’s an economical solution to having the kids make their own patterns when they build with slabs as beginners. I will have two follow up videos to this in the next two Friday releases which will show all that! (I also have older videos showing the process on my channel too! :)

    Karan. What is tar paper? I live in Belgium and The translation does not fit the material. It is not as flexible. It is called roofing and it is not smooth, it is very raw material. Thanks for all the great video’s.

      Hi An- the tar paper is an underlayment- it goes under the shingles. In England they call it builders paper I believe. Maybe it’s called asphalt paper? I tried to find what it’s called in Belgium- with no luck! Another solution if you can’t find it might be to use craft foam in lieu of the tar paper. I don’t use it as school though- as it’s more expensive to do with 200 kids a semester!

      Hi Michele- I use 15 lb tar paper sold at home improvement stores in the roofing section! Just be sure NOT to get the one with fiberglass! I will have the two follow up videos to this on the next two Fridays!!

    How many sketches do you make your students do? Do you grade their sketches? What requirements do you require to make students create such unique boxes?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  Рік тому +2

      Hi Kelley- I have them use my sketchsheets- one side has room for 9 thumbnails, other side has room for two bigger- and on those, I make them list two elements and two principles that they have learned about that they can utilize within their design. After the two bigger sketches, then we move on to drawing the blown out explosion views. I don't grade the sketches- but they must approve the blown out view with me so I can see if they understand the sides/bottoms etc. That's the most challenging step for them. They know their design is a good portion of their overall grade for the project- and lack of originality and copying another design will not earn them the most points they could receive. Here is a link to a pdf of my sketsheet if it would help! drive.google.com/file/d/1ZF5jQkyWQNMDbU0RNCcGtbFV03Bb8zN7/view?usp=sharing

      Thank you so much, do you have a teachers pay teachers account? I would love to hear/ see how to introduce projects to your classes. How much time do you allow for each project? Do you find your students are independent workers and can figure this out on their own or are you very hands on helping students figure this out even after this amazing demonstration? @@KaransPotsAndGlass
