      I can totally see the Gods angle being one of complacency rather than denial. Rather than flat out refusing to acknowledge the problem they treat it more as something that can be worried about later or that they'll totally be able to handle - effect on the mortal world be damned - when it comes to it.

    Annabeth showing up to Luke and Percy’s fight really undermines one of the key points of the series: Luke is her hero and she sees only the best in him. In every subsequent book, she’s talking about how he must have been manipulated and there’s still good in him and it’s that unshakable faith that inspires Luke to betray Kronos. Having Annabeth follow them invisibly implies that she doesn’t trust Luke and suspected he was a traitor, which just really weakens their relationship.
    The firework lighting was super cool though.

    I always felt that in the books, the Gods didn't care as much for their demigod kids until they had done something to prove themselves worthy of attention. Maybe because they had so many over the centuries. The exception to that being Hermes. It felt like because he spent so much time interacting with humans in his role of messenger and traveler that he truly started to see why humans needed the attention and affirmation they do. He just had so many kids that he couldn't spend time with all of them and still do his Olympus job. But he truly cared for his kids.

    • @DeepikaGinger
      @DeepikaGinger 16 днів тому +1

      I think the rules that prevent godly parents from interfering too much in their demigod kids’ lives also are a factor. But, I think even Hermes, who genuinely cares, drops the ball sometimes. In the flashback in TLO, it feels like he can’t really relate to the struggles that a demigod has to deal with, since he’d been capable of a lot when he’d been an infant, and he could have asked Chiron to send help much sooner.

    Consider how many of the moments of "show Percy out-smarted the trap that book Percy stumbled into" would have had increased the amount of CGI shots required to accomplish the original intent. Magical beds tying up Annabeth and Grover, 10-foot-tall Gods/true forms, Hades' throne room being empty with a simple lounge set rather than a massive army of skeleton warriors, having a pit scorpion inserted into the Luke scene, replacing the spiders and net scene with Percy sitting in a chair and having a simple effect transition between him and a gold statue version of him, it explains quite a few of the adaptation choices.
    I hope we get Season 2, and that Disney recognizes the potential profit involved with the show enough to give them a proper budget and timescale.

    I took some issue with the gods being portrayed as caring about but unable to help their kids, then I remembered Percy's exchange with Hermes in the Last Olympian.
    Spoilers for anyone who hasn't read it.
    Throughout the book we do see some flashbacks showing that Hermes really did love Luke but couldn't be there for him because of the prophecy Luke's mother had received. He knew that if he tried to save Luke from his fate, he would only make things worse.
    After Luke's sacrifice and the defeat of the Titans, Hermes ask Percy to look out for his kids who hadn't been brought camp yet.
    Also, Athena was a bit overprotective of Annabeth. She tried to scare Percy off when he was getting close to her.
    It was a plot point that the gods were bad parents, but not because they didn't love their kids.

    • @felicia3924
      @felicia3924 2 місяці тому +2

      While you do leave out the assholery the gods do subjects their kids to (during this series and mentions of them doing it in universe before the series begins), I kinda agree. They are not human. They are gods. They do have equally shitty and good sides about them that they carry out evenly. The book does a way better job in describing their inhumanity as a given: they are just different from us. (I dont mean that negatively, they are just not human). What this series has done is make them so very human and relating to everyday human struggle that you tend to forget there is even something different about them. The tragedy is that they DO love their kid but are incompentent parents, because they dont know what its like to be human. (Apollo only learns this after he becomes mortal). This series makes them relate to humans and involved and as a result considerate to human lives that they just become poor UWU God-parents that want but cant because of laws. And thats not what they are.

Percy would have really looked a little foolish if he did not suspect Luke after seeing Clarisse was still there, not arrested and Luke has done nothing about it. Also, that of the shoes he gifted dragging Grover almost to Tartarus. Also, I loved how Luke did not just have an instant shift from kind and brotherly to cold and murderous: instead it felt more natural, when he tried explaining Percy that what he is doing is for the best. It shows Luke more like disturbed, traumatized and delusional teenager who is convinced that he is doing the right thing instead of deranged, manipulative, & coldblooded killer. And Luke's feelings of betrayal and hurt is emphasized even more when he attacked Percy after hearing him mentions Hermes. It was a little action packed and well acted.
    I mean, it would have really looked silly if Percy was sitting still to avoid Pit scorpion and Luke was villain monologue

It makes their portrayal of Athena so much worse, especially given that they deliberately switched up the plot around the Arch to fit that storyline in.

    A few corrections:
    In the show, the pearls teleport Percy, Annabeth, and Grover to a Montauk beach instead of Santa Monica. That's why they skip over the flight to Manhattan, because it wasn't needed.
    The books actually do acknowledge that Percy and Annabeth are technically related, and sidestep this by saying that the Gods don't actually have DNA.

    I have mixed feelings about this series. On the whole I enjoyed myself watching it, and I could tell that everyone involved has a lot of love and respect for the source material. But I just found myself missing the lighthearted tone of the books. The silly, sometimes a bit juvenile humor. The carefree nature of the plot, where you could just have these fun action sequences and other shenanigans without always tying them in to some grander thematic purpose or character motivation. The general vibe of “Yeah, we’re on a super dangerous quest, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a good time while we’re at it.”
    All that said, I can’t say I really fault the creators for toning these elements down, because they don’t always work in a live-action medium. When this adaptation was first announced, I saw quite a few people saying they wished it were animated. And having seen the finished product, I have to say I agree. I think an animated series - perhaps something similar to ATLA in plot structure, animation style, and tone - would be a perfect fit for Percy Jackson. But we are in the age of remakes galore, so perhaps we’ll see one someday. In the meantime, I think the live-action folks did an impressive job of filtering the story through a more “serious” lens, and I’ll be interested to see where it goes from here.

      this is interesting, because i've seen a lot of people argue the show wasn't mature enough or serious enough and they toned down a lot of things for child audiences. Meanwhile, I do think they should have made Percy a little bit funnier (there's a interview somewhere with one of the exec producers that says they're gonna focus on developing Percy's humor a bit more in future seasons, so thank God) I know we don't have access to his internal monologue like in the books, but Walker could've done something else with his expressions and eyes whenever something weird happened, it would've added a lot to the humor of the show.

      i think that‘s also an intersting seed that they planted there and i‘m curious to see where that is going. because it kind of implies that percy sees the gods as his family right now, which makes sense with the emphasis on family they had this season. just because he is reffering to chronos as his grandfather right now, doesn‘t mean it has to stay that way. you can definetly get into a thing about family by blood vs chosen family about it. you can also kind of use it as a tool to explore how much of a blood relation there even is, since the gods chanonically don‘t have blood or dna. that line wasn‘t there on accident and i am sure they will be building on this when given the chance.

    To be fair, if they're going to namedrop Anaklusmos for drama, literally the only place that makes sense is during book 3, seeing as it's related very closely to Zoe.
    The blue food thing wasn't just Percy's mom being quirky. Gabe mocked the idea of blue food, so Percy and Sally's thing was to make all their food blue in a small measure of retaliation, making it being at the end a little bit weird.
    Also Backbiter is super relevant because it's actually Kronos's scythe. It's basically the first hint at Luke being intended as his vessel.
    And regarding the whole spirit of the west thing? It makes more sense when you realize that the Greeks aren't the only pantheon in the world. Egyptian and Norse gods exist in Riordan's universe, so presumably eastern gods exist too.

Which admittedly, is a problem the series comes from. Plus, given TLT had one of its antagonists be described as basically an Arab Niqabi woman, and his other major portrayal of an outwardly Muslim Arab woman (Samira) is iffy, I can see why RR would decide not to reference it. And the confrontation between them I think personally was better then in the books. Luke trying to recruite Percy was a great move. If I think back on the books all I can remember is them looking for monster, drinking coke and Luke suddenly laying his plot out (maybe I remember things wrong, but I can't think of a moment in the book where he tried to logically argue with Percy).
    In the trend of things Percy realised a bit quicker I think, but I think they pulled off Percys realisation perfectly. And the close to tears Luke... damn!
    I also actually like that they gave Backbiter some magical properties. Percy got Riptide on like day one. And considering what Backbiter will become later on I fully support the idea it being imbued with some Powers.

    As someone who didn’t read the books, this was an OK show with incredibly unsatisfying storytelling. The main culprits responsible for the entire mystery are : a Titan that we’ve barely heard about before it’s revealed ( if you’re not familiar with Greek mythology, Kronos doesn’t mean anything to you, so the show should have told us more about him beforehand) and Luke, a character we’re told has a deep friendship with Percy but it’s only shown in the last episode minutes before he’s revealed to be a traitor as he basically hasn’t been featured in the rest of the show (same with the red herring that is Clarisse : when Grover says she’s the one who stole the bolt I had no recollection of who she was, because we hadn’t seen her for several episodes, and I certainly did not remember she was Aries’ daughter).
    Those problems could have been resolved so easily with a longer runtime, adding scenes taking place at Camp Half-Blood to remind us of the characters that are there, and scenes illustrating Greek legends so we’re familiar with the relationships between the gods before they become important narratively. As it stands, the show is, again, fun, but the mystery aspect was truly mishandled and that’s really too bad because it definitely would have improved the show overall.

    I don’t like the mindset of an adaptation needing to be too the letter as it just needs to be true enough to the outline and spirit. At least it's still fairly loyal and mostly done in good faith. Some fans just get too picky with adaptations in some places.
    I think maybe the tv episode format isn't ideal for this story, as some stuff happens due to that.
    I feel if Disney wanted to meddle they would have done it way more lol

    • @riddlelady
      @riddlelady 2 місяці тому

      The Wheel of Time can certainly be considered a bad adaptation of the books due to the creative liberties taken by the screenwriters but at least the show is interesting to look at in terms of costumes/world and plot, it have very good actors and in the 2nd season the pacing enhances and episodes are definitely more entertaining. PJO is (sadly) just plain, boring and insipid in worldbuilding, dialogues and photography. I genuinely think that PJO fans insist they like it so much because they hate any kind of criticisms (part of this fandom is very immature and cult-like) and they have to convince themselves they liked the show, they are too scarred that Disney will shut down the adaptations so they are willing to accept everything in this show, no matter how mediocre. On the other hand fans of The Wheel of Time books (a generally older and more critical audience) openly hate the show because they were hoping in a faithful adaptation and they didn't get it (and yes, I understand them, I had to put up with HP's horrible adaptations for years)... but if you think of it as a standalone fantasy tv show (or as an AU of the books, if you want) I think you might enjoy it to the fullest because it's not a bad show to watch, especially when in 2nd season they start fixing most of the pacing issues

      Not in the Iliad. There’s a whole book about Hephaestus building Achilles an amazing new set of armor down to the decorations, and after he dies, there’s a contest over who wins it, Odysseus or Ajax. Ajax goes mad, with tragic results, when he loses it. And despite this, no part of the armor ever has a name. I think that’s a later thing from a different culture. Arthur and Siegfried have named swords.

    I get what you’re saying. Percy is the reader/audience, insert character in a way that he knows some stuff but this world is new to him, and it is being explained to him and us at the same time while we can experience the wonder through his eyes. I also remember seen in the labyrinth book where Percy had to clean the stables and remembering how Hercules had done it. He goes to the river. The river expects Percy to throw his weight around. He is the son of Poseidon she expects him to act entitled, but he understands, he says no, I won’t bully you I have been bullied and I’m not gonna do that to people even to save my friends. so he sits down and thinks well how do I save my friends now? then the river, surprised that the sun of the God that tangentially rules her is also just a person, and not a monster, helps him person to another person, there is such empathy there. But according to me is not stupid, but not studious in the way Annabeth is. He is a lot like his father in the way that he is a chill suffer dude. He doesn’t seem to have strong goals in life. He just wants to survive. He loves his mum and his friends and though he can be a bit of an idiot he would defend a stranger.

    I think it's similar to House of the Dragon in that it would have benefitted from a little more time. HotD suffered somewhat with the ungodly long timeline for a 10 ep series, and as much as PJ hit the major plot beats, another episode or 2 or longer episodes than we got, adding more time in between monster encounters to get to know the characters more and explore more of the lore, a few more flashbacks to camp etc. and more discussion (and maybe even depiction) of Greek myths would have done wonders for it. I have high hopes for Sea of Monsters, if for no other reason that it's just a little less 1-monster-per-chapter style layout and has a lot of good character moments. Clarisse's prominence in the plot in particular.

    • @riddlelady
      @riddlelady 2 місяці тому

      You know, my problems with House of the Dragon are not that pacing, because I really think that more time would have been useful for the plot but was not so essential, they made a good job anyway. My real problems with HoD are: a) the screewriters gave more depth to all the characters to make them more interesting and nuanced, I admite that, but in the end they still resorted to a narrative that manipulates the audience into separating characters into basically a good/right team (the feminist one, with their "new Dany" female Targ) and a bad/wrong team (the religious fanatic, mysoginistic one), which is NOT the case in the books. I would say that's just the opposite of Martin's point of the story (there is no good, feminist side in this war of power-hungry, terrible and spoiled people) and they didn't do a good work in portraying this imo; b) the series show me that media literacy in the average audience is sadly dead. When everyone, from actors to screenwriters, says that in a random scene A-character is doing a bad thing, or B-character is suffering SA, the general audience's obstinacy in denying these facts (or the dozen of yt video-reactions with people laughing at the SA scenes because they don't even realize it's SA) makes it clear that most of the audiences can't handle shows like HoD, they have kindergartens level of media literacy and should watch only good vs bad fairytale-like movies (edited for typos)

    The last episode was so good I immediately forgave all the changes they made previously... mostly.
    Honestly, I feel the show is trying to approach pjo from a different angle, which is why all the changes were made. I love how the gods are shown to be both well intentioned (Poseidon and Hermes) and terrible parents (Athena and Hermes again) as it adds to the final theme of "are the gods good?" I love how the main trio are simultaneously fighting for the gods (their quests) and rebelling against them ("I won't be like you" and other mentions that the gods have a messed up family that they don't want to feed into) also this kind of leads to percy's "You'll find out who I am" which was an awesome moment.
    I feel like these themes are coming through stronger in the series than they did in the book, which is why I don't mind small stuff like them not mentioning riptide or toning down gabe.
    I'm okay with them being more aware than in the books, I just wish there had been some moments where they were caught off guard. Idk if they were saving Percy's sword fighting skills for the finale, but I would have liked more action.

    I forget if I mentioned this in a previous video's comments section, but the reason I'm not too bothered by this adaptation despite the changes is I didn't find any of the changes get in the way. This is something I've learned from watching the Scott Pilgrim movie and the Takes Off anime that an adaptation doesn't need to be super loyal if it gets the vibes across. I'm pretty easy to please, and as such I saw that while there were deviations, the story did still feel loyal to the books in some capacity and, above all else, was a fun ride from start to finish.

    The series as a whole is good. Not terrible or boring. Not the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Just good. It has its faults and I still wish it was animated, but it stuck pretty close to the book and the actors nailed their parts. It actual improved the source material in some places. Grover seems to be more well rounded at this point instead of getting to shine later on and it scrapped parts that didn't age well like Luke's possible romantic feelings for Annabeth. I think some people are just that "Old Man Yells at Cloud" meme where they are just complaining about it not sticking to the books to a tee, seeing the weaknesses in the source material that they never noticed as kids being in the show and not wanting to admit to themselves that they are "old" now and aged out of the target audience.
    As a side note, the amount of people in the fandom are now saying the movies are amazing ever since the series came out is mind-boggling and ridiculous. The movies were always mediocre and terrible adaptations of the books. Sure, I love the Poker Face scene as much as everyone else, but that's one scene in a dull and cliche movie. Hell, there are loads of videos of people bashing them and saying how inaccurate they are, even when it comes to mythology. People who are now turning around and saying that they are amazing when they never had that stance before this series are hypocrites. Plain and simple. Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if similar historical revisionism happens to the Netflixs Avatar series if the series is ok or good where people start insisting the Shyamalan film was amazing, despite the fandom despising it before.

I may be giving him too much credit but given his theme of ancient pantheons I could see that being the intention. Different directions different relatively well known mythologies, Norse for the "North" Egyptian for the "East" Mayan for the "South" sort of thing.

    My thoughts right after finishing the series:
    1. Characters should be allowed to be sillier, I like the occasional quips and Percy flossing bored and Grover’s friendship song. More of silly kids being silly kids, please.
    2. Characters should be allowed to have big reactions if it makes sense. Moments of massive fear, sadness, anger, instead of just a blase casual attitude they mostly stick to.
    3. I like the change for Medusa but they didn’t change enough. Make her misunderstood, have Percy spare her, and in turn Medusa spares them because she sees they’re not like their parents. This would help Annabeth’s character too. After this, she would start doubting the gods more and what her mother taught her. At the arches she can still be unprotected because Athena is upset her daughter didn’t punish Medusa. Maybe she sends a clue to clarify her pettiness, lol.
    4. Let Annabeth geek out about architecture. It can be one of the first times she breaks from her seriousness and Percy is like “what? You can smile??”
    5. Grover, man. He needs more. Show the unique qualities of his friendships with Percy and Annabeth. Really express his guilt about failing Thalia. Maybe this manifests by the lie of omission going on a little longer, and Percy not getting why he didn’t tell him until Grover just snaps and admits he doesn’t want Percy to think of him as the failure he already sees himself as. Also, let him talk more to animals. Animals are cute. He should immediately have known what’s up with the chimera dog.
    6. I would have liked Luke and Percy to interact more early on. Luke immediately takes Percy under his wing, sympathizes with him when Percy is probably still too mad to talk to Grover. Show that they begin sword training so it doesn’t just come up in the last episode. This is the only time you get to see Luke as a friend, he’s a villain the rest of the show, so make it count.
    7. Echidna is cool and I like her slow walking towards them like their death is inevitable and she can take her time. No notes there, it’s chilling that she would’ve succeeded if not for the Deus Ex Machina.
    8. Waterworld could be improved pretty much by everything you touched on. Keep in Annabeth’s spider encounter. It could be a contrast to how fearless she is guiding Percy through the death traps. Make them kinda embarrassed on the love boat. As for the chair, I kind of like it and kind of don’t. Percy’s self-sacrifice isn’t wrong, character-wise, but I feel like he has to build up to such a deliberate self-sacrifice move like that. The arch seemed more spur of the moment, but this twelve year old was really accepting his imminent demise here and that’s alarming. I like Annabeth and Hephaestus’s convo, tho. Annabeth really worked up to the point where she could call out the gods like that. I would like the chair-paralyzing bit to look a bit more mechanical and less magical. Golden nano-bots? Sure.
    9. I’m not sure if there’s a way to make the gods big and tall without it looking too silly, but I think Zeus did pretty well at looking opposing. Hades should take notes, though I didn’t hate his performance.
    10. Ares is best character, 10/10. Fire eyes are cool, but some of the actor’s facial expressions make me laugh so hard that I’m worried it would make the performance worse. Maybe when he’s changing to his true form, his eyes change first, and that’s how you implement it.
    11. I like the gods being ambiguous with their love in the books and just generally being crappy parents. But, idk, I don’t mind there being exceptions. Maybe some gods, like Zeus and Athena, are too prideful to be good parents, and others, like Hermes, are a bit more openly loving. But it doesn’t make much sense in the show… Hermes blames his bad relationship with Luke on issues and resentment regarding Luke’s mother, and… yeah, while that could definitely be part of it, the other part is that you’re an absentee parent?? And Poseidon, ooh, I feel so weird about how sympathetically they portray him when they implied some heavy stuff with Medusa… I can’t get it out of my head that he.. well.. yeah. And let’s say we rework Medusa’s bit. Maybe she clarifies that Poseidon didn’t do THAT, but he did play with her heart and didn’t help her when Athena got mad. Then, sympathetic Poseidon might work. But I like new Medusa’s backstory, and how complicated it makes everything. And Percy should get to have complicated feelings about his father.
    I’ll add more if I think of it, but that’s that. I liked the series, and I like thinking of how I would improve it.
