Just found out there’s an end credit scene. I personally found it very unfitting considering how much they changed Gabe’s character. Dude was just a loser. He didn’t deserve to die in this version. It’s pretty messed up when you think about it.
It sounds like they changed the circumstances of Gabe turning to stone because of the changes to his character. And I understand why they changed his character, they didn’t want to bring up trauma in people who have been abused, so they cut it down a lot. And they changed it to Gabe simply finding the head instead of Sally or Percy deliberately showing it to him. Did he deserve to die? Hell no. I realized that from the first episode. But I also think some fans would be upset if it wasn’t included.
Sally and Gabe’s dynamic just felt... off. I don’t think they felt comfortable tackling such a heavy topic as abuse and pulled their punches. As a result, even if he was a jerk, Gabe felt more pathetic than dangerous. Definitely another case where the movie was more accurate than the books.
@@jetthayward4810They actually put out an announcement saying that they toned him down because they thought he might trigger people in a visual medium. Id argue that a certain level of triggering is kinda necessary in order to do the book justice and make Gabe’s death meaningful though. (Plus it has the same flaw as the movie where now whoever finds his body is gonna die too💀)
I am glad they changed the manner of death. He wasn't sentenced to death. He wasn't murdered. His downfall was his own selfish and self entititled actions. It was addressed to Percy. Percy would have known what it was and exercised care. Had he not opened someone else's mail he would have been fine. So I'm okay with his death. I definitely prefer it to Sally being a murderer. She stood up for herself and kicked him out. This consequence is all on him.
Lance Reddick's appearance as Zeus in "The Prophecy Comes True" is his final television appearance due to Lance Reddick's death. Lance died only about four to six weeks after shooting the episode.[1] According to Dan Schotz, while preparing for his role as Zeus, Lance "just kept saying, "This book, it's Shakespearean!" He kept using the word "Shakespearean," and feeling that pressure of, "I'm in this high-end play - I need to deliver gravitas." He put a lot of pressure on himself even in the short time we had with him. He understood what he was a part of, and the importance of it. It says everything about him as an actor. He just brought it."[1] Jon Steinberg stated that "we wanted Zeus to be someone who needs to be constantly convincing himself that everything is fine and under control. That felt like it came with a little bit of theater, a little bit of projection of his own authority, but also a sense of real presence. When you take all of those ideas and start looking for a person who embodies them, they just start to look like Lance. He is so - was so regal, and able to convey so many different things at the same time. To stand on stage and do a very theatrical monologue, but feel so grounded. The population of actors who can do those things, and then also just be the sweetest person and great with the kids he's acting with - heartbreaking is the right word. It was a perfect fit in a very hard-to-fit role, and he went way too soon."[1]
@@SonicSpeedGaming759 Even going by Young Kratos' mindset, he would likely toss the helm to Percy. Probably knocking him down before walking away into ashes.
I agree that it was the PRESENCE of Lance Reddick that really made him work as Zeus for me. Just the way he moved, postured, emoted with his face, and didn’t mix or waste words like the King of the Gods should. Truly sucks we won’t see more of that now 😞 R.I.P. 🙏
Body language and acting is what matters for a god, because they take so many different forms that personality is the only way to accurately identify a god.
If we saw a sudden flash when he's got a beard/today then, flash to his "modern/clean cut" suit and well groomed look. That suggests tge vanity of Zeus mirroring the modern times, but his presence was perfect.
1:00 That's me! The show has really disappointed me and your channel has been a FANTASTIC place to sit and watch your opinions on which I agree with (in some ways I differ but overall I agree) I'm not joking, I have no idea what I would do without your videos on it, my friend shared the episode 3 video with me and since then I looked forward to your review after every single episode, so I owe you many thanks even though it might seem stupid, thank you so much!
I agree with most of your grievances with this show, but I still enjoy it. I’ve also been keeping on top of news as far as a season 2 goes, and while nothing’s been greenlit, it sounds like the writers are trying to pace the season and expand on the characters better. Especially Grover, since he really needs it. Edit: also, I watched the episode with my family, and when Percy got to the throne room, the first thing out of my sister’s mouth was “where’s the fishing chair?” I agreed with her. Because I liked how each throne represented the gods’ different tastes and spheres of influence. Also, it was Apollo’s throne that’s gold. But that’s not shown until Titan’s Curse. Edit 2: Backbiter could open portals to other places in the books, but Luke uses it literally once only, at the end of The Lightning Thief. Edit 3: Kronos never wanted Percy for his host body. He wanted Percy on his side because of the Great Prophecy, and like everybody else assumed the half-blood who made the choice would also be the one who reached 16. This is the bit you’re thinking of when you think Kronos wanted Percy as his host body. It’s in The Last Olympian, Percy’s in his first fight with Kronos since he bathed in the River Styx: Kronos: “So…” He studied me, looking mildly annoyed. “You had the courage to visit the Styx. I had to pressure Luke in many ways to convince him. If only you had supplied my host body instead… But no matter. I am still more powerful. I am a TITAN.” -The Last Olympian, page 191.
Grover is barely in book 2, at least until near the end. (and the very start) I mean, they "could" give him more scenes, but that would deviate from the books again, at take time away from other characters.
@@johnyshadowAnd add needless filler scenes if it's anything more than a few short shots of him weaving and unweaving the bridal train until the others show up.
"I do not make movies for children. I make them for the child in all of us, whether he be six or sixty. Everyone has the innocence of a child. To speak to that innocence, that is the purpose of my studio." -Walt Disney, 1961.
"smile played on his lips. ‘Obedience does not come naturally to you, does it?’ ‘No… sir.’ ‘I must take some blame for that, I suppose. The sea does not like to be restrained" straight from the lightning thief. so why is he acting like that's a brand new line? it's honestly one of my favorite lines in the first book, and a huge point of characterization for percy.
I kinda wish Poseidon had looked a bit regretful when Percy asked if he dreamed about Sally- a nod to how he said he was sad to have had Percy lead the hard life of a hero in the book. We needed a hug too.
too bad that line didnt make as much sense in the series. obedience does not come naturally to Poseidon and he does not like to be restrained. yet he surrenders to zeus. getting mixed signals there. and sure, you can argue that is just how much he cares for percy. but I just prefer book poseidon where percy couldn't even tell how Poseidon felt about him while he stood in front of him for the first time. that Poseidon was as the sea itself. mysterious and hard to read. truly pleasant on some days but a storm can stir in a moment's notice I also love the moment when percy stood before them in the book and said "lord?" and both zeus and poseidon responded with "yes?" if I remember correctly, percy meant zeus. and I love the idea of poseidon knowing percy meant zeus and still responded to his "lord?". now that is a show about how poseidon isn't obediant. be clear with to which lord you are talking to, or poseidon will automatically assume you mean him. even in another god's throne room
After seeing the final episode I'm kind of thinking they did the whole War part deadline differently because, they wanted Poseidon to surrender to show how much he cares for Percy. That he is willing to surrender a war to his brother to save his son.
exactly, that's what I thought and it gives the seriousness of the god's actions much more depth.. and personally I always wondered what would've happened if they didn't make the deadline. I think its a cool change
That, and to show Zeus being self centered enough to not accept a tie to his war, he has to win because he’s the “top god” and the rest of the gods stroke/navigate around his ego
26:44 THANK YOU!!! I really don't get how or why people say that, it is *maybe* a simple nod or *at best* a wink to fans, but if it was a love letter they missed the mark on that, the show is not what the franchise deserves
The line from percy about "why would i need that": I didn't understand it as "needing to learn to fight" but more as "needing to learn to fight people/demigods", as from percys perspective only monsters are a problem. This scene hints at the future of him, in which he fights a lot of demigods
Lol, what I realized is that Backbiter always had that power, or more so the book vaguely mentions Luke “Leaving through shadows” which what??. As for everything else, yee. It was pretty okay. 👍🏻
Thats because he used the labyrinth. Introducing teleportation powers, WILL create dozens of future plot holes, unless the power is hemmed in extremely.
It really seems like they swapped out Grover's confidence and competence. At this point in the books, Grover struggles with deep-rooted insecurity and trauma despite being just as if not more competent than Percy and Annabeth. He has to learn to trust himself over the course of the series. Hopefully, they'll correct this in future seasons.
But it didn't serve any plot relevance in the show, since they got to their destination at that point anyway, and did they even say they were traffickers in the show?.. Yeah, sure, it develops Grover's character as someone who is linked with nature, but uhhhh why is he in this quest again (I mean from the standpoint of bringing something to the table as a team member)?
@@zolove_he helped distract Medusa, he got and returned the pink poodle which helped them buy the tickets to the train, he caught Percy and annabeth from falling to their deaths after the tunnel of love, he tried to sacrifice himself to save Percy’s mom in the underworld, and he was constantly sniffing out monsters for Percy and annabeth (even though half the time they ignored him). Grover has little moments in the books that could be easily cut out, and was cut out of the show, but those are his moments and without them he’s kind of just there tagging along.
I feel like honest critique is important especially because the books meant so much to you. The books came out when I was a teen and I felt like a snob (I was obsessed with Greek mythology as a child) not reading them at the time because I thought the real myths would not have been represented well there. As an adult now I’ve come to understand that it was a way to introduce a generation to Greek mythology and I’m currently reading the books. If anything the series made me pick up the actual novels.
I'd just like to add this thing about Backbiter. In the book Luke actually did use Backbiter to slash a ripple open, very similar to what happened in the show. The book didn't explicitly say that was what Backbiter did but I think its implied
Backbiter in the book i feel like does have the ability to open portals as the book says "he slashed his sword in an arc and disappeared in a ripple of darkness" it just isnt outright explained that it us an ability of the sword
If they wanted to change Sally, I kind of wish they just adjusted her so instead of changing her dynamic with Gabe, they just shed a different light on it. Maybe talk more about how staying in an abusive, toxic relationship “for the kids” is not good or worth it. Maybe we see Sally justifying it to herself and Percy or maybe we see Sally notice the effects it’s having on Percy when she’s not around. For example, maybe one day a teacher at Percy’s school mentions to her how Percy after Sunday nights, (or whenever Gabe‘s poker nights are) Percy seems very angry, sad and aggressive at school, and we see that realization sadly that even though staying with Gabe is for Percy’s protection it is also hurting him very much so much. Seeing his mom work like a servant for someone that’s hurt her and the fact that he can’t do anything about it eats him up inside. This could build more to her kicking Gabe out or killing him depending on how they want to do it.
Or take the difficult yet rewarding stance that single mothers are a powerhouse in today’s society. If you’re not gonna do the character, right, don’t include the bad character in the first place. They highlight other childhood struggles throughout the series, why not this one?
Yeah, I feel like a lot of the issues like this are because it seems the show wasn’t given enough time to work with. I was expecting the show to be a bit longer, which would have given more time to show exactly how bad Gabe is.
I would have liked the fight more if the camera was looking at Ares from below to emphasise the fact that it's a child fighting a god. I would have also liked it more if it was shown earlier that Perecy + water buff beets luke (the best swordsmen in the past 300 years) in a fight. It would have been more believable that he could hold his own against an Ares who's holding back.
I love Hades from books for not being a villian but still having that scary/god of dead aura and in show he was like "Haha I'm just silly god of dead" and it was like taking away whole "charm" of books' Hades
I totally agree that taking away from Sally and the violence in general was detrimental to the validation of young kids relating to Percy because of the worst experiences he and other half bloods go through.
Between the first book and and until it was clear Percy did not want to work with Kronos, Kronos tried to get Percy to help him take down Olympus because he knew Percy would grow to be a very powerful Demigod
About the Percy's issue with learning how to swordfight: As I understood it, he didn’t get why he should learn dueling techniques - parrying, counterattacks, if all of his battles are going to be be against monsters that don’t use swords and don't fight honestly (prior to his expierience with Fury and Minotaur)
@@TheMythologyGuy1that made me wonder about the pit scorpion scene from the book. We know from the books that Kronos plans on using Percy for the prophecy to “make a decision to save or destroy Olympus”. Obviously he wants to destroy it, so he needs Percy alive. So why would Luke try to kill Percy in the first book? I just reread the series, and that was one small plot hole I noticed. Maybe I’m missing something but it’s curious.
i think annabeth might’ve followed them invisibly because luke said they were going to meet chiron in the woods, but annabeth could’ve spotted chiron still at the camp and gotten suspicious. that was just how i rationalized it right after i saw it
I heard about this one. Yes, the ending had a lot of praise. They actually did something right and it took so long to get there. Shame that the Zeus Actor passed away mind, but still. You know, they have a behind the scenes documentary coming out now to appeal to people and help people understand how things worked, what they did and how stuff happened. I am so glad that they managed to figure something out in the end. Season 2? apparently so
I think Kronos said Percy is important because of the great prophecy and believes him to be the half blood to bring Olympus doom which would open up an opportunity for him to easily take the throne so he needed Percy to survive so he can fulfill the prophecy
Percy on this series is a know-it-all. This series removes the experience of us finding out who or what they encounter, FOR THE FIRST TIME. Percy here is like, “Hey, you’re this” or “Hey, you’re that” right in the moment he encounters them.
@@maciedixon3983 "I just truly don’t care about this like some people do." Okay... Good for you, I guess... To me and almost everyone else it's like Rick and the writers of the TV series just didn't want to have *any* type of intrigue or mystery or suspense in the TV adaptation... The main trio just solve everything before it happens... In bouts of concentrated, tone-deaf impulsivity, season one of the TV series actually has the gall to have the main characters just constantly exposition dump all the info of what they're about to face before they do it... "Don't let the viewer figure things out, please...! Just tell them early on and right away and have the characters go, "Anyways..." or "Alright..."" It constantly blew my mind whenever season one of the TV series had the fortitude of a trouble-seeking 12-year-old who is simply incapable of not spoiling the plot for others... No sense of discovery, no tense moment, no danger whatsoever, and no moments where we, the viewers, get lost in this world because we already know *immediately* everything about who and what everything does in this universe... Season one of the TV series just completely skipped over the characters learning experiences throughout the story... The main trio pretty much knew how to just walk into a place and *immediately* know how to defeat a monster and their weaknesses like the Lotus Eaters and Procrustes... I watched Dominic Noble's Lost in Adaptation review of episode six of the TV series and I remember him making the analogy of, "This series is genuinely starting to feel like the second playthrough of an RPG where you know all the twists in advance and make very different decisions just to see what will happen," and if that isn't the perfect analogy of how the encounters with monsters played out in season one, then I don't know what is... The struggles and being able to put myself in the main trio's shoes were pretty much none existent in season one... As someone who enjoys "a coming of age hero's journey" story like this I didn't have the feeling of the main trio trying to get better at things and the sense of discovering things and letting us get lost in the world. Season one *completely* missed out on the feeling of this newbie that's just starting out in this fantasy world when I came to Percy's characterization and arc.
@@whattheworldneedsiscreativ6421 not reading all this. I just fundamentally disagree. But to each their own. If you really don’t like it, just don’t watch it.
I want to see the gods in their… MORE godly forms. In the book when Percy met them the gods were in their larger 15-20 ft forms, instead of their human forms. I hope to actually see that in the show.
That's not their godly form, their true appearance cannot be seen by humans n demigods. Btw, in th case of zeus he appears as a swirling pillar of fire n light surrounded by lightningbolts, hera is a supernova, babi n nekbeth are a giant black crowned vulture n a large silver baboon, seth is a fiery sandstorm w/ a black amoeba in th center, poseidon is briefly described as flashes of green energy n th plains of tartarus appear like reptilian skin w/ th trees like black insect hairs
A bit disappointed we didn’t get the scorpion scene at the end. It was a lot more subtle as opposed to a sword fight and we still could’ve gotten the Annabeth reaction to Luke and make her the one to bring Percy back to camp to save him. The book ending set Luke up as a more intelligent and conniving villain, I don’t feel we got that as much in the show.
The scorpion scene wouldn't make sense. Kronos needs Percy alive for the prophecy, Luke trying to kill him with it would go directly against his master's wishes. Wanting to recruit Percy but letting his anger get the better of him and attacking Percy with his sword is much more fitting
@@rickyzeitler7169 Easy fix for that (granted it'd take until the second season to bear fruit) is to have the scorpion scene, Kronos castigates Luke for it in one of Percy's dreams, and Luke alluding to the eventual revival of Thalia as a failsafe.
Thank you for being so sincere and eloquent you express yourself, makes me respect you even more! And yes,as someone who did not like the series your videos feel like a safe space to discuss it
1:04 I actually got sent your videos by my brother after we had a couple messages back and fourth sharing our thoughts on the show. I honestly very much am on the side of not liking it, despite the fact that I love Percy Jackson deeply. I even named my dog Perseus, with Percy being what we always called him. And I have tried with all my might each episode to like the show but it's been really hard. I've even been trying to watch and read other positive opinions in preparation for watching the series again to see if I can see it differently and at least have a good deal of appreciation for it, but honestly all I feel like doing is going back to read the books again lol You're definitely not alone in your distaste for the series, I was really hoping for a lot more. I'm starting to hold out hope that it'll be an awkward and lukewarm response to just the first season, and the following seasons will start to really do the shows potential justice. I'm gonna start looking at it as a "faithful reimagining" of sorts, and try to stay positive that way. Very happy to have found your channel through these reviews though btw, love it!
I agree! The last episode was better in my opinion, so if they just keep adjusting hopefully season 2 will be really good, because I honestly do want this show to be good
Thank you so much for doing this series. I couldn’t watch the series because of the lighting, I couldn’t see any of episode 1-3. So, thank you so much for being honest and being real
20:38 If memory serves, Kronos did indeed want Percy be his vessel if he joined him. Though I don't think it was necessarily restricted to Percy, I believe he just wanted/preferred one of the Big Three kids as a vessel before he settled on Luke.
Apparently all of us book readers forgot this, but Backbiter could open portals in the books too. Legit all of us were like "oh look interesting addition," but it's actually from the books.
my personal issues with this was 1) moving the fight to montauk 2) zeus' aggression 3) the scene with luke at the end 4) the pearl being a teleport anywhere device 5) cutting them flying and its significance
I was more so indifferent with this series but the finale had me a bit excited. R.I.P. Lance Reddick, who definitely was the right choice and I think David Harewood would be a good replacement for the role.
EXCUSE ME GROVER IDID HELP HE TAUGHT THEM THE GETTING ALONG SONG and also on a serious note he also helped Annabeth and Percy to get along in the Medusa episode, where he forced them to talk honestly to each other. He also figured out Ares was a culprit in the thievery of the lightning bolt, but in the long run of things that was more or less useless.
I think Annabeth following them makes sense cuz in the animal van episode, during the iris message luke says "how do you know" instead of "who is it?" When percy tells him "we know who the lighting thief is!" and you can see Annabeth is very puzzled when luke says that, plus i think she was not completely convinced by Luke's reasoning for not telling chiron about Clarisse.
The audible joy I got from the simple things like Ares bleeding gold/ichor and Annabeth having a different hairstyle at the end...it was all very good. Not perfect, and not necessarily a "deserved" finale considering the entire season, but a good finale!
Edit to add: Grover's only purpose in this show, I swear, was to have hooved feet...like he existed (in the show) so the winged-shoes would slip off of his hooved feet. They legitimately ruined his moments and purpose in the show by constantly undermining him, sending him away, or generally misusing him. Poor actor, honestly.
21:20 You gotta watch the post-post credits scene, my guy! They definitely address the Gabe drama and they definitely killed a toxic (ex-)boyfriend in a horrible way instead of, in the books, justifiably murdering a physically and emotionally abusive asshole...
@@redfyresasoiaf im really confused about your Grover point. What other important things did he do in the first book that I’m forgetting? I’m genuinely asking. Rick really didn’t even seem to know what to do with Grover himself until book 3

@@zolove_ In the show, Grover is there basically to have cloven hooves so the winged shoes come off easier than Percy's human feet would have allowed. We get some funny (and honestly not funny) banter from him here and there but he's mostly just in the background. Which is a shame, because I would have liked to see him useful. Yeah, in the books he doesn't do much for a while but at least he does ANYTHING (aside from, like I said, being a satyr) and he actually feels like Percy's friend the whole time. The entire 'trio' hardly feels like friends until way too late into the show, which is not helpful to Grover's or Annabeth's cause, haha
It's kind of funny that you said Lance Reddick would've been good as Charon because his character in John Wick was Charon. I don't know if you knew that.
You're saying that because all of you want an exact copy of the events in the books. The writers are not doing that because they have to work around the runtime that they are given. They also didn't opt for spectacle, they instead chose to focus on character drama.
But they’re doing what they can with the time they’re given. You should be directing all this to Disney. Half an hour is not enough to show what was in the books.
I love how you understand that people’s opinions can be different and you don’t hate on ppl who like the show. Unlike some ppl online I’m glad you can dislike the show and still respect ppl who like the show at the same time
Yea I agree there are way to many people who try to tell everyone else how cool and Different they are when they tell people that your dumb for liking something .
18:11 I think Percy already knew Luke was the Lightning Thief. Told Annabeth to just tail them, so he could safely confront Luke and see if his suspicion was right.
In the book he did teleport away with back biter And yeah for like four of the books Kronos constantly makes a point to luke how much better of a vessel Percy would make And in the after credit scene of the last episode Gabe does get turned to stone I think you missed that scene
In th 2nd n 3rd books he doesn't use this power cause he simply doesn't need it, their goals in these 2 books are different, while in th 4' he gives th sword to th telekines so that they can reforge it in its original form of a scythe to kronos, n in fact for th entire 5th book it's kronos who uses th former sword as his old scythe
@@Gradestar10 there are moments when Luke retreats normally when he could have teleported, Rick probably just didn’t want him teleporting all over the place, and only did it the first time for aesthetic which is completely fine
Fun fact; the actor of Poseidon is the same as John Robinson from the Lost in Space Netflix show, which is also a show where he plays the protective and strong father trope so he has the experience in that
I really hope the that this feedback is heard when filming season 2 as they now have a chance to get this show all the books adaptations if they do season 2 right and then hopefully we can get all the way to season 5
20:30 - Kronos didn't want Percy to be his vessel. He just sought to indoctrinate him into his ranks so that the hero of the great prophecy would be on his side, fighting Olympus. He only realized in hindsight after possessing Luke that Percy would've been a more convenient vessel, as Percy was willing to bathe in the river Styx with no hesitance, unlike Luke.
In an effort to make this comment succinct. I will say. I agree with your reviews greatly. The books are so, so, so good. It's only logical to state inaccuracy. Myself, I give this first season. 7/10.
One problem I can see with the new Backbiter thing is how it can affect the plot of books/seasons 2 and 4. What prevents him from creating a portal to and from the item in book 2 and then just drop it off at camp and then just use it to access a certain location rather than navigate the maze in book 4.
It is not new, it is from the books. And yeah It was weird and started a couple plot holes. Less so here, I think, since it seems like he needs a door frame or arch to activate it, unlike the book, where he just slash a gateway open.
@@justsomeoneabittired1273 It doesn't create plot holes. In th 2nd n 3rd books luke doesn't use it to enter th camp cause it's simply not necessary, in those books their goals are different, while in th 4th book he gives th sword to th telekines so that they can reforge it in its original form scythe for kronos, this is why they use th labyrinth to enter th camp, also cause no 1 in th camp knew hb th presence of an entrance to th labyrinth inside th forest, so luke would have had th surprise effect on his side
20:29 maybe they are hinting on the prophecy. Remember that at this point Percy is the only known living forbidden child (keyword known because Nico and his sister are being hidden on the lotus casino), so Kronos has plans for Percy to make the bad decision and bring doom to the Gods.
The sword does have portal powers in the books. It’s one sentence one line. But never gets brought up again after this. So it has portal powers in book one. But never after this which is kinda odd.

Been a fun ride watching you review this series. I give it a solid 7-8 out of 10. So you can tell I disagreed with you a lot. But your points are valid and I understand some of the gripes even if I didnt take as much of a negative as you did. Besides episode 6 because that was awful. I love Hades in the books and I hope it was more of an act in the episode we saw him in but who knows. Hades put up a front to get what he wanted is my personal headcannon, but his interactions with Nico (if we get to them) will be more important to me. I truly connected to Nico above all others and just want to see him done right. Also as 31 year old man myself it makes perfect sense to hold onto stuff from your childhood whoever said you shouldn’t makes no sense. Lets both just hope for some improvement in the next season! Beyond the cast, Riordan also touched on how features films may not have been the best medium to adapt Percy Jackson to begin with. Once boarding the new adaptation as an executive producer, Riordan fought to make the adaptation a small-screen series rather than another attempt at a film franchise. He noted, "My feeling was always that television was the better format for Percy, because it allows us a larger canvas to tell more of the story. And to be more faithful to the source material, which is what the fans of the books really would love to see.” With the new cast, Riordan feels that everyone involved is "perfect," even if they don't look exactly like how they might have been written in the original books. With Scobell, Riordan noted, "Did I care that his hair is a different color than what is described in the book? Not at all. He just felt like Percy.” With Simhadri's Grover, Riordan similarly added, "Does he look exactly like I describe him in the book? No. That doesn’t matter." "Leah impressed me from the moment I met her. She has that sort of steel that makes her a leader, but there’s a bit of vulnerability to her," the author went on to say about Jeffries. “Now, again, does she look like Annabeth looks in the books? No. Was that important to me? No. If anything, it was a massive benefit to broaden the cast in terms of representation.”

The series wasn't amazing, but I at least somewhat enjoyed each episode and really enjoyed at least three of them. It was a good show though, and I do hope they make a season 2, cause I have a feeling that they'll only get better as Ricks learns more about making TV shows.
Honestly the whole scene on Olympus gives me such strong mixed feelings. Because it was mostly good and enjoyable to watch, but also annoying, when I think about the book. Half the time I was like I love Percy, but I'm on Zeus's side. I don't agree with how they treat their kids, but on the other hand, my man is THE KING OF THE GODS and this twelve year old child comes to him with this attitude. I would've tried to smite him too. In the book since the moment he is told that his mother never brought him near a plane because she knew he didn't belong in the air as a child of Poseidon he is TERRIFIED of flying. Flying back after the quest to make it in time he panics with every little turbulence! He walks into the throne room, KNEELS IN FRONT OF HIS FATHER and immediately gets scolded by Zeus, because he is (once again) the king of the gods and Percy is scared. Then, at the end of the series after he's done so much (spoilers, I guess) - helped save the Camp, helped save/saved Artemis, fought of the attack of Manhattan and saved Olympus to pick a few - then he cares little enough/is brave enough and also tired enough to be like "hey, thanks for that offer, I actually wish for something else" and even makes them swear on the river Styx and it is such a great development that so earned. If the whole war was just so that we would have Poseidon surrender to show he truly cares for Percy and for Zeus to be smug about it, then I absolutely need the: "...and our thanks to Poseidon without whom it would've been difficult-" "Difficult?" "Impossible..." Now I just need Poseidon to rub it into Zeus's face even more, lol. And I think the Backbiter teleport thing is gonna come back as a problem, honestly, but maybe not. Other than that worry, it is a cool exit. I clearly needed to vent, man. Also, I don't know why, but the way Lance Reddick commands the room I could see him, well I thought of Kronos, but frankly I think he would be excellent as Atlas.
Percy as a forbidden kid has the potencel to raze Olimpis, like in the prophesy. So Kronos would rather team up with Percy than kil him and wait for the next forbidden kid.
I kind of liked the "I surrender" thing. It really shows how the war was always just about honor and dignity. It shows how fickle the gods are and gives the audience more understanding for Luke's position. Also, Poseidon saving Percy sets up Percy rejecting Luke's proposal.
I agree with what you said about Grover in show. He did not do much but I can argue that in first book Grover did not do much in book. Like if you honestly think about it the only thing he does to help in book is talk to animals. In book Percy and Annabeth kind of did all the hard stuff and that is fine since Percy is our main character we need him to do all hard stuff. I will give Grover credit in book that he distracted Medusa for a while until Percy took over. That was like the one badass thing he did in first book. I may be wrong so anyone can correct me
I hope rick sees what works amd what doesnt and with increase in budvet hopefully we can get a more accurate adaptation. Though i know this for certain season 2 will definitely be better than the movies based off the books.
I’m so glad that you and FriendlySpaceNinja have made videos openly disliking the show. I had reread the books for the first time since middle school a few months before the show came out and fell in love with them all over again so I was UNBELIEVABLY excited to see the show. I had my minor grievances with the first 2 episodes but I was still having a good time and fully hopeful that the rest of the season would be fantastic. Then episode 3 came out, and episode 4, and 5, and my enjoyment started to dwindle away. Episode 6 was the straw on the camel’s back for me. I remember I would check the episode discussions on the PJO subreddit after each one came out and after watching episode 6 I desperately needed to feel like I wasn’t just being a hater for no reason, but all of the top comments were nothing but praise (at first, critical comments did start coming later). As happy as I was that people were still getting enjoyment out of the show, a big part of me was just thinking “am I really the only one who HATES this???”. I was convinced that I was simply being too critical and that the books were too fresh on my mind, and SO MANY people were insisting that book accuracy didn’t matter so that made me feel even more in the wrong. Now, after watching all of your episode reviews, as well as FSN’s video reviewing the whole season, I don’t feel bad for not liking the show anymore. So thank you for providing a space to be a hater lol
I agree it’s definitely on the middle road for overall ratings. It had a big issue with setting up and answering mysteries. (People love mystery even if it isn’t blaitent). And Grover not being well utilized. I think the talk with ares could’ve set up him being the one most in tuned to the “myth” world in terms of discussion. Sad to see because I think I would really enjoy his character. (I really need to read the books sometime). I agree hades was the miss casted? Miss directed? And wasn’t written well, I was happy with the bare minimum but bah.
31:01 Hades has no grudge on Percy but Zeus Only 3 humans faced Hades ' wrath and deserved it - Pirithous , Tantalus and Sisyphus He was hiding his grudge for sake of hospitality Unlike his book counterpart, this version of Hades is friendlier and doesn't resort to threats when he meets Percy. Hades also doesn't go into a rant about his troubles with running the Underworld due to the number of souls there now are.- is only difference Nico appears in 3rd book not here The films will always be WORST because Hades is NOT EVIL - When they find the entrance to the Underworld, they pay Charon with drachmas and he takes them to the palace of Hades. They are attacked by hellhounds but Persephone saves them and takes them to Hades. When Percy tells them that he is not the lightning thief, Hades releases Sally and orders them to be fed to the souls and hellhounds causing Percy to drop his shield. A part of the shield opens, revealing the master bolt. Hades takes the bolt; however, he does not keep up his end of the bargain believing Percy had lied earlier, so Persephone knocks him out. They decide to take the bolt to Olympus but they only have three pearls, one for each person, so Grover decides to stay with Persephone, as he is Percy's protector.
I'd say the same, 5/10. The biggest problem that keeps me from enjoying this show most, I think, is the fact the books do exist, and I think do it much better. I get some of the changes and are interested in them. But a lot take away from the small moments that we enjoyed. Also, only 8 episodes?? This really should have been 12 I think. The reason you do shows is so you have more time to work with. But even with the time they had, there is a lot I think could be cut to give us a movie that would make a lot more sense and be more accurate.
20:40 it's when percy is fighting kronos, percy shows that he is stronger than luke and kronos laments that he should've waited for a better host (percy) but i think nico was also mentioned in passing during the labiranth tho that might have been about minos
This episode gave me a glimmer of hope though there were still faults. I think there are many valid criticisms of the show and glad you point them out.
20:35 I believe this is true. Because children of the big 3 are more powerful, and he wanted a more powerful vessel, but he was willing to take whatever he could get. But he wanted to use Percy.
23:20 People seem to forget the HUGE potential this franchise has, we shouldn't be searching for good things to say about it, it should be difficult to find something bad about it even. Yeah, it's a series adaptation, but believe me, it shouldn't be impossible to do especially with the help of the *author* of the book, there's no excuse for what we got as an adaptation, It's just meh when it should be awesome
This is super nitpicky and it's not really a problem, but I didn't understand why they would make backbiter a curved blade. The whole point is that it has two edges to kill mortals and mythical creatures, but how are you supposed to use the side that's on the inside curve?
@@tomhur1yeah that's true, though the edge wouldn't be sharp. It'd be like whacking them with a thin metal rod, but to be fair that's still pretty effective as a blunt weapon I guess.
I don't mind the missing the deadline plot point, I think it was done to show Percy's character and how he develops in this new environment/world. I guess they had to do it, as in the earlier episodes, they showed him wanting to go on the quest only to get Sally back than thinking about the bigger picture of a war starting. And by the end of the of the season, Percy does see the big picture.
(i reference the PJO/HOO books in a way that could be spoilery, you've been warned) I loved this episode and I am so genuinely upset that we KNOW the series could have all been great, there were like 3 eps total that were excellent! The scenes for this ep were very pretty and the fight was really fun and realistic because its the godsdamn God of War so sneaking up on him was a great way for Percy to win. Ares' personality is very accurate. Zeus was awesome and on par with what I expected (rip Lance Reddick), Poseidon was also great. I liked how casual his conversation with Percy was, idk I think I prefer him not apologizing to Percy for him being born, even if it changes a lot. I'm ok with the changes for the finale overall. The one change I'm most upset about is Gabe overall. They still had him turning to stone (also it was an after credits??). In the book it was such an awesome reveal that Sally killed all of the poker boys and sold them, mainly for satisfying revenge purposes because of how abusive they were or were abettors to abuse. The rest of the series would have been so so so fun if they matched how good this episode and episode 1 and 4 were, it wouldn't have been so disappointing. My main issue is that the changes they made seem small and insignificant but they will effect the rest of the series and will also domino effect to the Heros of Olympus series (Ares curse and Arai iykyk) as well which will suck, I think. Plus if they keep things kiddie, what on earth is gonna happen as things get worse? It's a pretty dark series with a lotta casual death dismemberment and fear. Unless they shoehorn the things they left out in the next series, which would feel clunky and awkward for those of us who've read the books and know how smoothly things should fit. The weirdest part of the kid vibes/Disney effect is: if a kid enjoys the tv series and wants to read the books, this show will give them and their parents a false expectation of what the series is. The show won't prepare them for what is actually in the books where Medusa gets beheaded and they kill Procrustes, and the rest of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and beyond. Like, what a way to fuck things up long term. (Edit: the conversation in Ancient Greek was awesome. They also had Greek letters as the floor number indicators on the Empire State Building elevator to Olympus. (Αα Ρρ Σσς Ττ Υυ Φφ Χχ) it was kinda weird they had the uppers and lowers there, and that they used mainly the last letters in the Greek alphabet, but it was a fun easter egg. Though it was extra weird they had Χχ as the last floor number and not Ωω. It would have been really fun and made more sense if Omega (Ωω) was the button to Olympus or something like that.)
Just found out there’s an end credit scene. I personally found it very unfitting considering how much they changed Gabe’s character. Dude was just a loser. He didn’t deserve to die in this version. It’s pretty messed up when you think about it.
It definitely isn't as warranted as the movie or book versions, makes you wonder why they watered his character down for this.
Lance died only about four to six weeks after shooting the episode.[1]
According to Dan Schotz, while preparing for his role as Zeus, Lance "just kept saying, "This book, it's Shakespearean!" He kept using the word "Shakespearean," and feeling that pressure of, "I'm in this high-end play - I need to deliver gravitas." He put a lot of pressure on himself even in the short time we had with him. He understood what he was a part of, and the importance of it. It says everything about him as an actor. He just brought it."[1]
Jon Steinberg stated that "we wanted Zeus to be someone who needs to be constantly convincing himself that everything is fine and under control.
I loved his portrayal of Zeus, he felt very intimidating and powerful. It’s sad we won’t get him for the later seasons 😔
Rest in Peace Zavala. I will miss you.

I agree that it was the PRESENCE of Lance Reddick that really made him work as Zeus for me.
Just the way he moved, postured, emoted with his face, and didn’t mix or waste words like the King of the Gods should.
Truly sucks we won’t see more of that now 😞

Body language and acting is what matters for a god, because they take so many different forms that personality is the only way to accurately identify a god.
If we saw a sudden flash when he's got a beard/today then, flash to his "modern/clean cut" suit and well groomed look. That suggests tge vanity of Zeus mirroring the modern times, but his presence was perfect.
Final question via Annabeth's Disney product plug - would you be excited to see Percy Jackson at a Disney theme park??

I agree with most of your grievances with this show, but I still enjoy it. I’ve also been keeping on top of news as far as a season 2 goes, and while nothing’s been greenlit, it sounds like the writers are trying to pace the season and expand on the characters better. Especially Grover, since he really needs it.
Edit: also, I watched the episode with my family, and when Percy got to the throne room, the first thing out of my sister’s mouth was “where’s the fishing chair?”
I agreed with her.
It’s in The Last Olympian, Percy’s in his first fight with Kronos since he bathed in the River Styx:
Kronos: “So…” He studied me, looking mildly annoyed. “You had the courage to visit the Styx. I had to pressure Luke in many ways to convince him. If only you had supplied my host body instead… But no matter. I am still more powerful. I am a TITAN.”
-The Last Olympian, page 191.
Grover is barely in book 2, at least until near the end. (and the very start)
I mean, they "could" give him more scenes, but that would deviate from the books again, at take time away from other characters.
The sea does not like to be restrained"
straight from the lightning thief. so why is he acting like that's a brand new line? it's honestly one of my favorite lines in the first book, and a huge point of characterization for percy.
I kinda wish Poseidon had looked a bit regretful when Percy asked if he dreamed about Sally- a nod to how he said he was sad to have had Percy lead the hard life of a hero in the book. We needed a hug too.
He probably forgot it
too bad that line didnt make as much sense in the series. obedience does not come naturally to Poseidon and he does not like to be restrained. yet he surrenders to zeus. getting mixed signals there. and sure, you can argue that is just how much he cares for percy. but I just prefer book poseidon where percy couldn't even tell how Poseidon felt about him while he stood in front of him for the first time. that Poseidon was as the sea itself. mysterious and hard to read. truly pleasant on some days but a storm can stir in a moment's notice
I also love the moment when percy stood before them in the book and said "lord?" and both zeus and poseidon responded with "yes?" if I remember correctly, percy meant zeus. and I love the idea of poseidon knowing percy meant zeus and still responded to his "lord?". now that is a show about how poseidon isn't obediant. be clear with to which lord you are talking to, or poseidon will automatically assume you mean him. even in another god's throne room
Trying to remember and doesn't it later come out he used the labyrinth?
Thats because he used the labyrinth.
Introducing teleportation powers, WILL create dozens of future plot holes, unless the power is hemmed in extremely.
he actual text from the book
"He slashed his sword in an arc and disappeared in a ripple of darkness."
So yea, that fits the show well enough
It really seems like they swapped out Grover's confidence and competence. At this point in the books, Grover struggles with deep-rooted insecurity and trauma despite being just as if not more competent than Percy and Annabeth. He has to learn to trust himself over the course of the series. Hopefully, they'll correct this in future seasons.

See I always figured since Kronos gave luke back biter, it just transported him to Kronos or mount Tam and that was its only ability.
I agree that would have been epic camera work and would have really shown the sheer insanity of the series and the fights Percy gets in.

Between the first book and and until it was clear Percy did not want to work with Kronos, Kronos tried to get Percy to help him take down Olympus because he knew Percy would grow to be a very powerful Demigod
About the Percy's issue with learning how to swordfight:
As I understood it, he didn’t get why he should learn dueling techniques - parrying, counterattacks, if all of his battles are going to be be against monsters that don’t use swords and don't fight honestly (prior to his expierience with Fury and Minotaur)
Percy was a part of Kronos plan because the great prophecy said a child of the big 3 would either save or destroy Olympus.

It constantly blew my mind whenever season one of the TV series had the fortitude of a trouble-seeking 12-year-old who is simply incapable of not spoiling the plot for others...

Hey The Mythology Guy, really love your videos! I’m glad I really wasn’t the only one who was a little mixed on this show.
The movies did it perfectly.
@@Gradestar10 that’s not really what I meant. I meant in their 15-20 foot still human forms.
So well put. It seems like nowadays people leave no room for criticism, especially when the ACTUAL AUTHOR is involved.
@@dustrose8101 I guess that would work, but I honestly preferred the sword fight
I've even been trying to watch and read other positive opinions in preparation for watching the series again to see if I can see it differently and at least have a good deal of appreciation for it, but honestly all I feel like doing is going back to read the books again lol
You're definitely not alone in your distaste for the series, I was really hoping for a lot more.
Couldn’t have said it better
I believe it's in TLO when they're fighting on the bridge, Kronos says he would have preferred Percy's body.
Apparently all of us book readers forgot this, but Backbiter could open portals in the books too. Legit all of us were like "oh look interesting addition," but it's actually from the books.
Honestly really appreciate that you speak your mind
I really liked your takes on the previous episodes and the movies so far keep up the great work man I’m happy I found your channel
my personal issues with this was
1) moving the fight to montauk
2) zeus' aggression
3) the scene with luke at the end
4) the pearl being a teleport anywhere device
5) cutting them flying and its significance
16:33 “Lukie- wh- why did I say “Lukie”?? What a weird thing to say…” this cracked me up so randomly lmaooo
The design of the under world really intrigued me and if they get so far I really wonder how it will look whene Nico revives Hazel.

Again, for season 2, the writers should definitely consider hiring this man for all the small details and affects..
Well, to plan them. I don't think he knows CGI, but can visualize what he expects.

When he asks “when am i gonna use this” i took it as him asking “why do i need to know how to fight humans, we’re monster fighters.”

And to be more faithful to the source material, which is what the fans of the books really would love to see.”
With the new cast, Riordan feels that everyone involved is "perfect," even if they don't look exactly like how they might have been written in the original books. With Scobell, Riordan noted, "Did I care that his hair is a different color than what is described in the book? Not at all. He just felt like Percy.” With Simhadri's Grover, Riordan similarly added, "Does he look exactly like I describe him in the book? No. That doesn’t matter."
"Leah impressed me from the moment I met her.
Annabeth is terrible.

I may be wrong so anyone can correct me
I miss Lance, cause he was in for at least two of my favorite franchises. In this series and in Destiny it makes me sad hes gone
6:23 I now remember this is his FIRST time in Olympus, I'm not sure if they explained how he even knows where to go and what to do
31:01 Hades has no grudge on Percy but Zeus
Only 3 humans faced Hades ' wrath and deserved it - Pirithous , Tantalus and Sisyphus
He was hiding his grudge for sake of hospitality
Unlike his book counterpart, this version of Hades is friendlier and doesn't resort to threats when he meets Percy. Hades also doesn't go into a rant about his troubles with running the Underworld due to the number of souls there now are.- is only difference
Nico appears in 3rd book not here
The films will always be WORST because Hades is NOT EVIL -
When they find the entrance to the Underworld, they pay Charon with drachmas and he takes them to the palace of Hades.
I thought with the Ares fight he was just messing with Percy but than he just stood around for like 10 seconds while Percy summoned the wave.
RIP Lance Reddick
Oh yeah I didn’t even think of that
I think it's intended to resemble the blade of a scythe, but yeah it doesn't really work.
I mean. Celestial Bronze passes through mortals, doesn't it? So hypothetically the bronze side passes through them only to be hit by the steel.
I liked it too.Fifth episode was my favorite.
I'd you look at the best and worst episodes, Rick has written the best episodes
The ones without him, worst
(i reference the PJO/HOO books in a way that could be spoilery, you've been warned)
I loved this episode and I am so genuinely upset that we KNOW the series could have all been great, there were like 3 eps total that were excellent!
