The extra irony is that "Summertime" is a George Gershwin song ----- you know, that nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn, and he based it on a 19th century Ukrainian lullaby called "Ой ходить сон коло вікон." Soul is a state of mind, and those who have it magically appear anywhere, any time, to keep us sane and keep us fine.

One day when I was in high school, I was standing on the sidewalk along the school drive at lunchtime, when a car drove up and Bill Medley and Bo Diddly got out. They asked the way to the auditorium and gave an inpromptu performance for those of us lucky enough to be in the area at the right time, then they left. It's still hard to believe I witnessed that. A great memory.

I can picture it now. Two music legends, just hanging out one day, decided, "Let's jam! Wait! There's a SCHOOL nearby. Let's go there, and give a show to the kids! It'll be FUN!"
Just performing for the sheer love of music, and seeking out an audience to share it with, one fine day. Awwwww.

I sure appreciate that a young man such as you recognizes the unbelievable talent of The Righteous Brothers. Bobby Hatfield was the ice and Bill Medley was the fire. I fell in love to their music, had my heart broken and found solice in their music. “Summertime” is a famous ballad sung by many people. I think it came from “Porgy and Bess” a black musical.

You are, as am I, old. We know just how superior Bill and Bobby's music was to any other similar singers. Their b&w videos are timeless, as are the voices of either or as the best duo to ever sing. I was a DJ during their prime and became friends will Bill, after bobby's passing. His shows in Branson were outstanding, and three times as much when his son and daughter joined him.

Porgy and Bess was written by George and Ira Gershwin but had an all black cast. It was written in an operatic style but had spoken dialogue like a musical whereas in an opera everything is sung. These two destroy the old trope that white singers can't sing soul. So did another favorite of mine the English singer Dusty Springfield, who would be another great react for you.

Both of these guys had miraculous voices. When we first heard them in the late 60s and 70s, we were stunned by the cuts that we heard on AM radio. Bobby Hatfield is probably the most underrated (in pop culture) vocalist ever. Bill medley attempted a solo career that wasn't very successful. Bobby probably could have done it, but his image was so squeaky clean and collegiate, that it got in the way of his raw musical depth and virtuosity. They were popular when UD Sullivan was still editing out Elvis below the waist.

If you love the Righteous Brothers (and if you don't love them, you have no soul), and love how these white boys have so much soul, I recommend Buddy Holly and the Crickets, the first white band to play the Apollo.
They were booked, thanks to being heard on the radio. Then they arrived, and everyone was SHOCKED to see these white boys walk in (all very humble and respectful and SO HAPPY TO BE THERE), and there was some nervousness about them appearing on stage at a historically black theater.
Then, they started playing, and the crowd went wild with delight!
Buddy Holly had a short life and shorter career, but he CHANGED Rock and Roll, forever.
And speaking of looking out of place and SO HAPPY TO BE THERE, please watch Peter Hollens (featuring MatPat) performing the theme song to Game of Thrones. Peter plays most of the characters, and they all seem like they have seen some $h!%, while MatPat, playing Bran, is just happy as a puppy with a new little boy. Also, the song is GORGEOOUS. And the subtitles are hilarious. I recommend "watching" the video with your eyes closed, to hear the amazing music, entirely made by the human mouth and body, then watching it again, to see the visuals.
You have a new subscriber in me, sir! I LOVE watching your honest and heart-felt reactions. You listen to music with your WHOLE BODY, and I am HERE for it!

In 1965, there was a weekday daytime TV series on CBS entitled "Something Special". The Righteous Brothers were a guest on an episode of the show. "Summertime" was an album cut on their 1965 album, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling". The Righteous Brothers made frequent appearances on the 1960s ABC prime-time Rock music program, "Shindig". On that TV show, The Righteous Brothers teamed up with The Blossoms (an African-American female singing trio) to sing a cover of the Ray Charles hit song, "The Night Time (Is The Right Time)". All of the singers cut loose, and sing their hearts out on that song. The TV performance by The Righteous Brothers And The Blossoms is available for viewing here on UA-cam.

The ‘Brothers’ always put on a Vegas type show at their concerts rather than just sing. They were the first rock an roll act to headline in Las Vegas, whee they were brought in by Frank Sinatra and they played there off and on for their entire career. And yes, they started out with hard rock and roll which they sang for three years before they did their first ballad (You’ve Lost that Lovin Feeling). They were always an R&B duo at heart…. Try ‘I Just Wanna make Love to You”. Bill doing Delta blues….Ot “B Side Blues” for both of them….😁

Bobby Hatfield, my favorite singer was a Contra-Tenor. Check out Bobby singing "Summertime". Bobby singing "My Prayer" Bobby and Bill (Medley) together were amazing. Check them out on the Ed Sullivan Show, "You'll never walk alone"; The Andy Williams Show (Unchained Melody) They were on the "Shindig" TV show. Check out "Mix -Righteous Brothers Shindig appearances" They were together until early 70's, split for a while, Bill going solo and Bobby solo and singing with another guy. They got back together a few years later and performed until Bobby sadly passed away in Nov.2003, A few months before his passing, they were inducted into the R and R Hall of fame. Bill is still performing with Bucky Heard as the "Righteous Brothers" but no one, in my opinion, will ever top the wonderful and amazing Bobby Hatfield. Together Bob and Bill were magic. * They always sang LIVE. ***They were the opening act for the Beatles on their first tour of America until the boys signed on to the Shindig TV show. Sally

Summertime was originally from the play“ porgy and Bess”. You should watch that play I'm sure you could find it there's been TV productions of it. And it was originally a lullaby. The lullaby is what I sang to my kids when they were babies in the style of porgy and Bess. The jazz up version isn't my favorite but it definitely gives Bobby a chance to show off solo in something different than Unchained melody.

Such an amazing talent that we are lucky to come across once in a generation.
Another once in a generation talent is 16 years old Angelina Jordan from Norway. At the age of 6 and while travelling with her family in another country, she came across a shoeless girl who had a bathroom scale for people to weight themselves on in exchange for some coins. Angelina struck a conversation with that girl and without prompting from anyone in her family, she gave her shoes to the orphan girl. That evening she wrote about that encounter in her diary and vowed to always sing barefoot when doing that in public to remember that girl and to remind all of us about the many needy children around the world. 3 years later at the age of 9,she wrote and published a book about that encounter making her Norway’s youngest published author. She was interviewed on TV about her book during the week when it was released, but just before the interview she performed a short version of “Unchained Melody”. Here are the links to that interview and her performance. ua-cam.com/video/wPfMzMeBLbo/v-deo.html
    ua-cam.com/video/-cCLDY0CSZ8/v-deo.html
I would very much appreciate if you react to both of these videos together. She also performed Summertime on the finale of Norway Got Talent. ua-cam.com/video/443pBSpx5B4/v-deo.html
And later on with an orchestra. ua-cam.com/video/stwF4ti1tbc/v-deo.html
She will have a very positive impact on you.
Angelina’s fans who she calls her Angels, will flood your channel with subscriptions and comments.
Thank you and keep up the good work from a new subscriber.

Always loved this song & have been singing it since my teens (or 20s? Can’t remember) My mom, who came from the big band & jazz era), never mentioned the Righteous Brothers to me. Guess she forgot! This song has been covered beautifully by many different artists, in many different styles. Bobby’s voice is quite something isn’t it? Lol😅 thx for funny reaction

The Righteous Brothers were a little bit before my time but I heard them on the oldies but goodies stations. What I had not heard until UA-cam were these LIVE recordings. They are so much MORE than the album/radio versions! Wow! I did not realize how crazy Bobby's voice was! You gotta realize this was BEFORE it became trendy to do these runs with your voice (which people over do today). The tempo changes, voice technique - the smooth runs here are perfection! AND ALL LIVE, no enhancements.

Wait until you hear the Vinyl Album: "Porgy and Bess" by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald singing -- smooth as silk.
This music was written for the Broadway Musical: "Porgy and Bess", one of the saddest plays I have ever seen, much like a Tragic Opera.
(Ella Fitzgerald is on a You Tube Channel showing her sing the same song; at 68 years old. Posted June 21, 2010).

Back in the day, during the Summer, there were short lived "Variety Shows" that filled in for the networks. Otherwise, there would only be regular 13 week schedule shows shown again. What we called Re-runs. Year round, there was a "Movie of the Week", and other programs that we don't see done today since cable. I loved this version. I think my fav version of this song is still Janice Joplin (now we know where she got the idea), and Fantasia Barino did a great version on American Idol. Good post MMB. New Subscriber. God's blessing on your channel little brother.

Summertime was composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. Even today young people sing this today, and shockingly, have no clue who wrote it. "George who?" Sad commentary on the state if average people in our country have no clue of their cultural and popular musical heritage in Ellington, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Simon, Carole King, Holland Dozier and Holland, from any era. Of course the general media doesn't want you to know because it makes no money for them. The throwaway culture. The good thing is I see below many commenters do mention where this song came from....a brilliant enough song that it has been done by different generations and hasn't been forgotten. Musical education and knowledge makes one a well rounded person rather than a one dimensional, one genre slave to the cultural cash register. thanks to You Tube people are discovering music outside their own little world created for them by the corporate media plyalists.

A little history. I was raised up during their reign. I was and still
a huge fan of them, especially Bobby. I was devastated when he died.
Bobby passed away in a hotel room from cardiac arrest brought on by cocaine that was found in his system. Bill found him because he was late for a show. I listen to every reaction video about them. He was one of the greatest of all time. Pure blue eyed soul! I know he is in rock n roll heaven and they have a hell of a band. But I miss him!

    • @Aurora-tp3dy

You had to do it. News flash: he was going to have that heart attack anyway and soon, according to the medical examiner. 90%+ blockage in arteries. So tired of talk about that trace amount of cocaine.
He was an incredible singer and an incredible human being. Focus on that.
