Wonderful singing and great energy---Held, a fine actor, has that kind of big baritone voice that is rare to here these days.
As for those who don't like it in English---this was billed for families at The Met during the holiday season. It was nice for it to be in English for the kids---and you can understand the diction here as well.
And when a show that is written in English is done in Germany, often times it is sung in German---especially musicals.

Yes, indeed. And they often sing Handel's Messiah auf Deutsch.

Find the old Met production of 1982 with Judith Blegan and Frederika von Stade. The best. Only drawback is that it's in English, but not a fatal one.

Gosh, I love this show. Every version, but this was my first - and by far the best produced of all of them.
I don't mind the English. It's a fun translation, and the voices are amazing, anyway. (which is what counts in my book).

This looks like it was a lovely production all around! And despite of being German and somewhat of a purist when it comes to opera in general, I don't mind the English libretto here at all. The translation is good, the music well matched, and Hansel and Gretel is meant to be a production for our youngest opera goers-anyway. Whatever helps to interest kids in opera is good for opera on the whole in my eyes.

BismarcksOtto just keep saying that to yourself. I enjoy your comment. I don't like it when some people say this is awful it needs to be sung in German the original language. The MET PRODUCTION did a very excellent job translating German to ENGLISH in the 1981 performance with Judith Blegan & Fredarica Von Stade. My daughter especially at the age of 4 thoroughly enjoyed. The witch was played by Rosalind Elias as of the Witch incredible job a must-see I had it on VHS wore it out to death. My daughter would watch it several times a month with her friends. A good opera for sleepovers with young girls or boys Etc it's available on DVD through a Deutsch gramophone I believe. Excuse my typos I use the microphone when I make a comment do with an autoimmune disease I will be okay my friend sincerely. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

My daughter and I love the translation, we love Christine and Alice, we love the witch, we love the cannibalism bit, we love the children's chorus.
Please, oh please can we have more? The sandman and the dewman, the Abendsegen, the angels?
Psst..this DVD is definitely going to be under the Christman tree

I highly recommend this marvellous production. Look, times have changed and there's more than one way to illustrate the story. (You know that if you've looked at a children's book in the last thirty years.) H&G are wonderfully played as children. They live in an instantly recognizable modern urban poverty. Angels don't fly down to them as they lay in an inert heap on stage. Rather, they actively dream a fantastic banquet, and we enter their dream! To me that has a magic of its own.

I agree. Nothing will replace the 1982 production in my heart, but this is an absolutely magical production.

@GregOpera this is one of the most intelligent modern interpretations of this opera... you, Greg, are tired.

Listen to the singers and you'll hear that she's baked into a loaf of bread (some translations say gingerbread, pretty much all involve her in a cake or bread, and I'm sure all involve her being eaten). The real fairy tale is no less morbid than this.

Foxy el Garabato not really. Look at the movies that are out today for children. Harry Potter Etc. When I was growing up as a young boy 1955 I was 4 years old and I saw Sleeping Beauty Cinderella Snow White Etc the evil woman or much worse than the witch and Hansel and Gretel. Way too graphic for a young person's eyes and ears but it was acceptable to watch in the 1950s and generations to come. Walt Disney produce great animated Fairy Tail stories with beautiful voices and acting by the animated humans Etc Snow White and the witch I gave her a poison apple so she would fall into a deep sleep because she was so considerate the most beautiful woman in the land. The witch was a queen with great Supernatural powers understand what I mean. You must enjoy the great Classics from the past. Because what children have now it's somewhat ugly and terrifying. I appreciate your comment because you said good but creepy. I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to say to you my friend. I am now 67 years old and so is my wife my daughter would have been 41 this October 14th 3:14 p.m. . She enjoyed the Timeless classics Snow White Cinderella Sleeping Beauty. She especially loved Hansel and Gretel for obvious reasons a Timeless classic at the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck. Have you Googled him. You will enjoy why he wrote this. Taken from original fairy tale Etc please excuse my typos I use the microphone when I make a comment due to an autoimmune disease I will be okay thank you my friend for listening sincerely Arnold Bourbon Amaral under USA where do you live?🇺🇸
