  • Kia has recently introduced the latest addition to its lineup of award-winning SUVs, the 2023 Sportage PHEV. This model builds on the foundation laid by the Sportage HEV and offers outstanding efficiency with a 13.8 kWh battery and a target all-electric range of 32 miles. According to Sean Yun, the President and CEO of Kia America and Kia North America, the Sportage PHEV demonstrates Kia's commitment to electrified solutions and ultra-efficient powertrains, which are in high demand by their customers. The Sportage PHEV is a sophisticated package that is leading the way in Kia's Plan S strategy to achieve carbon neutrality.
As the oldest badge of the Kia brand, the Sportage has received its most significant change to date with the fifth generation, which was introduced in November 2021. Developed as part of Kia's new global brand transformation "Movement that inspires", the 2023 Sportage offers the most for today's savvy, adventurous, and environmentally conscious consumers.
The Sportage PHEV is complementing Kia's subcompact SUV lineup with two design-focused X-Line trims that come standard with all-wheel drive. The car is slated to go on sale in the third quarter of this year, with pricing to be announced closer to the on-sale date.
The 2023 Sportage PHEV is powered by a 177-hp 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, complemented by a 66.9 kW electric motor and a 13.8 kWh lithium polymer battery. It comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission with selectable drive modes and Hill Descent Brake Control. The car charges using a high-performance 7.2 kW on-board charger, and it takes approximately two hours to fully charge the battery when connected to a level 2 charger. The car's Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) combines hydraulic pressure generation and control functions, which results in a linear braking feel realized through electronic engine management.
The Sportage PHEV offers faster regenerative braking speeds than the competition, thanks to the IEB. The EPA fuel economy ratings for the Sportage PHEV will be announced closer to the vehicle's on-sale date. The Sportage PHEV chassis, based on the Sorento's "N3" platform, is made up of hot forged parts and ultra-high strength steel to improve average tensile strength and torsional stiffness. The car's sound-absorbing and insulating materials minimize road, wind, and engine noise.
The 2023 Sportage PHEV is one of the largest SUVs in its class, with 39.5 inches of best-in-class rear legroom and 34.5 cubic feet of cargo space. The car's spacious interior provides rear passengers with room to rest. Overall, the 2023 Sportage PHEV is an exciting addition to Kia's lineup, offering advanced technology and innovative features that meet the needs of today's drivers.
