- Who was the most famous Norman of all time? Without a doubt, it was William the Conqueror. But was he the most important?
In this episode we look not at William but at his aunt, Emma of Normandy, one of the most intriguing figures in Medieval history.

I'm not even five minutes in and I already know I'm going to love all this content! Thanks for doing what you do!
Very good research and especially, very good perspective. By looking at women, in some cases, like this one, it really clarifies some of the events that otherwise remain clouded.
I wonder what the negotiations were, what was negotiated and the contract that made the marriage between Emma and Knut possible.
Such an interesting video! Thank you so much!
Great job!
that's the problem with hereditary power you can end up with people like aethelred the unready who sounded like he was well out of his depth.
Emma was My 30th Great Aunt
William the conqueror is one of your cousins.
Well done, sir! I have subscribed. I found your channel because I watched Valhalla on Netflix and wondered “who is this Emma of Normandy”? And, “what might her family connections have to do with the later Norman Invasion”? It looks like I found a You Tube channel to teach me some very interesting history. Thank you.-- I’ll be back.
Oooo I found a new channel yay 👏
who is the real first norman king of england? sweyn forkbeard or cnut the great or william the conqueror?
Hi, great video. I am intrigued by her, do you know if she had descendants in the 12 or 13 Century England?
Well, her daughter Goda married Drogo of Mantes, count of Vexin, and had a son named Ralph the Timid who became Earl of Hereford. Apparently his descendants are the Sudeley family of Toddington in Gloucestershire! So probably!
Didn’t the Witan have a hand in saying who the next king was going to be?
You forgot Margaret Beaufort
Thank you.
This is thoughtful, and in depth enough to educate, and inspire viewers to learn more, without being preachy, or dry.
Of course the subject matter is naturally terrific, when told well.
And I'll ask it again. How, is her* story not a big budget film, or series?
* not to mention the rest of the Norman/English Queens (aka, the Early Queens), as you pointed out here. 👍
Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! Emma is such an interesting figure and so often overlooked. We totally agree that an early medieval queens series would be amazing. We'll definitely have to cover more of them in future videos as well!
I too am a Norman
