4:12 I love people like David Carpenter who are just so excited about their subject matter that they literally can't keep still. His classes must be amazing.
Thanks for explaining the origins of the "hurst" suffix, it took me back to a quote from my youth: "In Elmhurst, at York and Roosevelt Roads, where you always save more money!"
William, Duke of Normandy - the Conqueror who was crowned William I, king of England, was my direct ancestor along with his beautiful petite wife Matilda, who was his queen. Their marriage was a true love match and William is known to have never had a mistress because of his love for her. which was unusual at the time.
I can't help but wondering if, in fact, the Viking raid in Yorkshire was a plot between them and William to draw Harold away, dividing his forces. The battle of Fulford on Sept. 20th, Stamford Bridge on the 25th, and then William landing on the 28th. This was no coincidence. Harold's army must have been supremely fatigued. He made a huge blunder by not succoring his forces before the final battle.
Because that marshy area was sea in 1066. The coast wasnt like today. William could land over there and found Harold at Crowhurst on a much steeper hill than Battle Abbey 15:25
I show no listings for Mr. Cameron's book, "1066 Malfosse Walk". It must've been self-published and of only specialized interest. There are multiple copies of the fictionalized account, "The Golden Warrior", however.
Wow..halfway through this first episode: a show about a medieval British topic, by a guy who could be his brother (based upon physical looks) and I'm just realizing that this is Dan _Snow_ and not Dan _Jones_ ...
The history of English royalty is quite confusing… it’s more French than English… more Nordic than French .. where’s the Anglo lines ? The Saxon ? And from which is York vs Tudor ? Lancaster vs plantegen… and English being Germanic while French was the language of the palaces and nobles … Vikings are the origin.. bottom line ? It’s so elusive evasive to comprehend totally .. with all its details!
French was the language of government's, states. Latin was the language of the churches. The Angles, saxons and jutes were germanic people not Brit. Anglo saxons were displaced by normans who were Norsemen and french. Most of the history of english royalty was of distant relatives, cousins and families killing each other using armies of ordinary people. Most royalty was inbred regardless of whether british spanish, german or Russian. They were all related.
U Brits sure have had yer fill of Scandinavians : First the Vikings, then da Normans Well, well at least us Swedes let England win da soccer match yesterday . But sorry lads, next time we won´t be so magnanimous...

The problem is that he got it wrong! It actually means 'wooded hill/heights' or 'wooded slope', and that's not from a Snow but from a Fairhurst!

He's my 24th great-grandfather on my father's side and 26th great-grandfather on my mother's side.

stop trying to relate with your oppressors.
Why do amateur historians insist on posting pompous pontifications to UA-cam videos...
My last name is Norman! I'm so proud to be part of this clan.
